Just curious what people think.
Im not specifying season or career. Just guys you don't think were that good and won.

I'm just trying to get a general sense of the worst caliber of qb we can win a Super Bowl with.
I think comparing 49 years of Super Bowls to our own situation is difficult, because of how the game has changed.
So to answer your real question, the floor is Flacco/Eli. Maybe Brad Johnson with a truly dominate defense and run game.
Dilfer has to be the poster boy.
Brad Johnson although he had his best season by far.
People argue Eli and Flacco on career but they got theirs by playing elite post season.
Some call Wilson a game manager albeit an elite one.
Mark Rypien although again he had by far his best season.
Doug Williams and his aberrant partial season.
Jim McMahon
It's just for discussion purposes. Not everyone will agree. Personally I can take a qb in that era for what they were. Numbers might not be the same and game has changed, but bad qb's are bad qb's in their era.
I was more interested in the history because I didntvreally start watching football until after the oilers lost to the bills that one time everyone wants to forget about.
I'll be thirty this year. Texans are really the only pro football team I've ever followed closely.
I'm curious about bad or mediocre qb's to have won it all. Just wanted to hear different opinions if anyone has some names.
Brad Johnson
Trent Dilfer
Doug Williams
phill simms
Jim McMahon
Len Dawson (KC)
Joe flacco
ELi won 2 so u can say hes not a fluke and a good QB

another name I'm not familiar with.
Len Dawson.
Thanks for the list.

ELi won 2 so u can say hes not a fluke and a good QB also . Mark Rypien won 2 so u can say he was pretty good
also Ken Stabler from the raiders but i heard he played for the oilers 2 and he was a great raider nickname the snake so hw can u hate on him LOL
Fair enough.
In that case, in that case Cak pretty well nailed it.
Though I'd include Joe Namath as well. He was more hype than greatness.
Namath. Interesting.
always thought he was considered a top tier qb.
Based on some of the names and reminders here I'm starting to rethink my position that schaub couldn't have won it.
I know a lot of the names are old timers. Just thinking.
What about Bradshaw? Was he a good qb?
Mark Rypien won 2 so u can say he was pretty good
Bradshaw was confusing. He wasn't that great generally but he was mind-bogglingly disgustingly clutch. He'd pull some dumb backyard football stunt and Swann or Stallworth would save his ass.
but then again TJ came in and beat Cincy and ATL games I don't we could have won if matt was playing
Didn't a Giants backup win a SB in the early 90s?
Dilfer has to be the poster boy.

Simms and Dawson didn't get into HOF because of 1 SB
I was thinking maybe Simms, but no way Dawson deserves on a list of mediocre
Check your data, Phil Simms isn't in the Hall.

my bad, I confused his "one more pass to Lawrence Taylor being at HOF ceremony instead of his jersey retirement ceremony
linkNot every quarterback that wins a Super Bowl (or several) is the reason their team won. These guys arent even close.
Damn forgot about him...Yeah you could slide him in anywhere in my list.Dilfer, McMahon, and Namath are automatic to me. Plunkett makes sense as well.
I struggle after that. There's a handful of guys that could fill out the other spots. Not a huge Bradshaw fan but he won so damn many of them. I've always seen Eli as incredibly overrated but he also has a good track record in the playoffs.
Johnson was actually a big part of his team's success the year they won it, but he only had two good years in his entire career. If you think Johnson should be on there then you probably feel the same about Morrall. I think their careers were similar.
Rypien was only average during his time as a starter.
I think I'd go:
1. Dilfer
2. McMahon
3. Namath
4. Plunkett
5. Johnson
6. Rypien
7. Morrall
No biggie.
For comparison purposes, here's a list from FanSided.
link
1 - Joe Namath
2 - Trent Dilfer
3 - Jim McMahon
4 - Jim Plunkett
5 - Brad Johnson
6 - Terry Bradshaw (I agree that Bradshaw rode the defense during the first 2, but he stepped up and helped earn the the 2nd two)
7 - Earl Morrall
8 - Mark Rypien
9 - Ben Roethisberger
10- Eli Manning
I'm not going to count Earl Morrall or Jim Plunkett or Jeff Hostetler because they "came off the bench" to win their SBs. Non-starting guys get a pass in my book. You should be happy they don't completely screw the pooch; so for them to get you to the playoffs and the SB and win it, sh!t thats icing, whipped cream, cherry, and sprinkles.
That was their list, here's mine; in no particular order:
Mark Rypien/Doug Williams (tie) - One good year then disappeared
Jim McMahon - One has to wonder that, with Sweetness and that dominating D, if he had been a top flight QB how many SBs would they have won?
Trent Dilfer - No brainer. The year after the Ravens won the SB with him, they let him walk.
Terry Bradshaw - early on he kinda sucked but I think he grew into being a solid QB around the 3rd SB
Ben Roethlisberger - Like Bradshaw, he got his first ring on the back of a strong D and the running game. But he earned the last one by outdueling Kurt Warner
Brad Johnson - see Dilfer, Trent

3. Earl Morral Beat the Cowboys after Unitas got knocked out.
Dilfer wasn't the starter. Tony Banks started the first 8 games.
Those washington teams were about the power run game & you can go ahead and lump all of Washington's qb's in this category during that period. which is why i put Thiesman on my list. Somehow this guy has gotten a pass like he was really good in the NFL and he wasn't. The year they won the SB with him at the helm he had a 2009 Schaub-esque year passing the ball. Up to that point in his career, he hadn't really done anything except throw more INT's than TD's. He was also pretty much garbage in the playoffs too.
In addition to the above list, I'll add Tom Brady. Much like Big Ben, he went on to be a great QB (very good in Ben's case), but his first season and first SB were pedestrian at best.
People argue Eli and Flacco on career but they got theirs by playing elite post season.
And Flacco, LOL .. we all saw first hand how good he was the last time he showed up at NRG.
Brady's first Super Bowl MVP?
I understand where you're coming from, but without Brady marching the offense down the field with 1:21 on the clock and no time outs, Vinatieri never gets a chance to kick that field goal.
Brady's numbers were not phenomenal, but he was clutch. And that's why he won the SB MVP.
Big Ben's SB was his second year in the league as a starting QB. Brady, on the other, hand, started that season as a backup and never expected to see much playing time behind Bledsoe.
...after the refs awarded a fumble recovery to the Colts with no Colts around and a Cowboy holding the ball.
There's a ridiculous standard. There isn't a QB who's ever played the game who didn't have bad games. He was 275 ypg, 11 TDs, 0 INTs, 120+ QB rating good in the playoffs to win the SB.
He's not an elite QB. Far from it. He's only as good as his OL, and that year, his OL was elite, not him.
