Moves before the Trade Deadline?

House of Pain

Wild Speculator
Anyone that has eyes and sight can see that the Texans really could use some help at OL (and maybe the secondary). I'm nauseated that I have to say the FREAKING OFFENSIVE LINE needs help when they they are paid more than the GDP of Tuvalu. I don't know about getting more help in the secondary, considering we will be getting some of the players back within the next couple weeks. I would have said that LB was an area that we could use someone, but it looks like our backup LBs are doing just fine.

As bad as the tackles have been, I don't think that we can move on from them just yet, and will have to gut it out for the rest of the season. Fisher has looked ok so I would be looking at some interior guys, hopefully that could play both LG and RG. They're probably going to move on from Kenyon Green after this year, so maybe they pick someone up at the deadline (and extend them...because that's what the Texans do...for no reason).

What player(s) would you want them to realistically to acquire?

Acquiring actual starter o-line help that's actually, you know, helpful seems pretty rare at this time of year.

Usually that's an end of season type thing. I'm thinking if we want o-line improvement it's going to have to come from within. Whether that be schematic adjustments, coaching adjustments, or personnel.

DeMeco said everything is on the table. You could play Kendrick Green at LG, Patterson at C, Fisher at RT or some variation. Basically someone screws up every snap, not always the same guy. To send a message I would sit one of their asses this week. If Scruggs cannot get the communication down or protection schemes right, maybe try Patterson first. Also, maybe just run and 3 step drop until Nico is back

To get real help on the OL this time of year you need a miracle. Someone needs to be willing to part with a real asset so it’s going to cost a lot. If the plan is to try and draft a starter that pick might be gone in such a trade. I keep thinking of the year Kubiak went after both Charles Spencer and Eric Winston in the late second round. That kind of move I’d like to see happen again. Go get some real linemen please. Trade for one now though? Nearly impossible.

That's what I would suggest, as well. To start with. Insert Patterson at C and kick Scruggs over to LG. One, it may help settle the line down. Two, it sends a message to everyone that there will be accountability henceforth.

The problem to me looks post snap and it's why I feel coaching is such a major culprit.

It feels like the predetermine who is blocking who (which is fine and how it's done everywhere) but there's zero post snap adjustment. It's why loops and stunts seem to fool Green and Scruggs so bad because they just seem to chase whoever they thought their initial block was supposed to be. Late shifts, loading the line of scrimmage and stunts seem to put them into a blender and they can't think on their toes at all.

I'd rather just put Pattersson at LG but yeah Green is way too often just losing out there in pass pro. He's been decent run blocking at times though.

I read Nate Davis may be available. I don’t know what kind of system blocker he is but I hear he’s good at run blocking.

We should trade for Christian Gonzales

Of course, that's not happening. But what about the other Patriot CB, Jonathan Jones? He's on an expiring contract and unlikely to re-sign with New England. I don't need PFF to tell me Jones is not having a good season. But moving to a contender may invigorate the vet. The Texans aren't certain when Lassiter will return and another CB is needed, anyway. Caserio knows Jones well, so it's something to consider.

I’m sure Caserio will be buying if there’s a deal to be made. I like the call raiding the Pats CB cupboard but I think they are happy with who they have on defense. With how they performed against Love at home I trust DeMeco will field a competent unit week in week out as long as Stingley, Hunter and Anderson are suiting up. Those three are the “indispensables”.

Offensively help is needed. Not sure who would be willing to part with a starting caliber OL but if there’s one to be had that’s the deal to make.

Otherwise this roster is set and it’s up to the coaches to make best use of the groceries Caserio assembled.

Might take it a step further…..I’d give Broeker or Green and Fisher a shot at manning the right side. Howard moves to swing tackle.

LT- Tunsil
LG- Scruggs
OC- Patterson
RG- Broeker or Green
RT- Fisher

LG to RT would be represented by Penn State, ND, Ole Miss or A&M, and ND. What do these schools have in common? They have dominant running schemes and recruit the nasty OL to fill their trenches. I’d really like to see how this starting unit could help Mixon and the run game.

It’s a shame Tunsil didn’t live up to his run blocking assessment from the NFL Combine. He was seen as a nasty blocker in screen situations b/c he could go find LB’ers to hit at the second level after clearing the first level. Only drawback I read….they considered him a finesse run blocker.

Not necessarily, if the Browns blow things up as rumored Bitonio might be available.

Unfortunately, those three you mentioned didn't excel Sunday. Neither did Dell or Autry.
Both of the last two should be game ready.

OL reinforcements ain’t coming folks.not from the outside anyway.

If I made 1 change on the o-line, Kenyon Green is outta here. I’m sitting here re-watching the game now, his feet are just terrible. He’s too slow with his feet to pick up LBs on blitzes and/or d-line coming off twists, and he’s too weak to hold up at the POA with D-linemen straight up. Jeffrey Simmons is gonna have a field day with him.

Most of the inside pressure on CJ is coming off his gap.

First thing I would do is go back to last seasons playbook. We had so many different offensive linemen lineups do to injuries, they actually played better.

Second thing I would do is scrap that crazy ash bunch formation.

I would move Scruggs to LG and Start Patterson at Center.

I would be looking for another vertical threat type receiver. Right now Tank just doesn’t have the explosion.

Finally bring in another CB or put King out there. Murray needs to go.

Wonder if a guy like Bo Melton could be available at the deadline. He's got the speed to stretch defenses vertically. I was really hoping Caserio would draft him and his brother for that matter.

I watched it again and came away with the same conclusion.

I keep on reading the issue is Green. Then it’s Scruggs. Sometimes Mason. Then Howard. And Tunsil underperforming.

I don’t think there is one easy solution. They all need to get their collective **** together.

What scares me is the fact Texans could be one concussion away from QB purgatory again

I just happened to listen to a brief segment of KILT tonight. Seth Payne talks to Clint Stoerner. Said he had an image in his mind. Had to rewatch the game to see if there was any evidence of his theory. He called the show to affirm. Idea hit him sometime today. He said the line had a virus .... and they got it from their leader. I watch the line too much. I've quit watching it - 1) I get angry 2) I miss too much of the game. Payne said they were all taking their cues from Tunsil (he dogs it) - goes through the motions to get in his guy's way a little, but no serious contact .... he's making so much money, he constantly thinking "longevity"! The rest of the linemen follow his lead .... they're doggin' it too ! Payne (Cornell Graduate), says it's like they've all got the flu ! You know how in bowling, the ball hits the pocket perfectly, and all the pins are in the air at the same time .... football lines occasionally resemble that .... or used to. When they do, you usually see a back run for 50 yards. I don't remember the last time I've seen a defensive front - blown back by us ! Demeco said he was going to get it fixed by next week .... he's gonna tell'em "Okay guys .... quit GoldBrickin' .... or that's what they used to tell us !

I don't know if it's a Tunsil thing, but this has been a Texans thing for a long while. Since BO'b dismantled Kubiak's line anyway. I've been wondering if it's an NFL thing since I don't see people running folks over in the run game. I can't remember it standing out anyway. But they get in front of someone & wait for that person to make contact with them.

So the OL issues are all Tunsil's fault.

He's playing to extend his longevity? Hey, Clint, why was he playing in the playoffs on a knee that needed surgery or is currently playing on a bum ankle if he's looking to extend his career longevity. Could the issues really be that the OL is just flat out dumb? Clint should be able to recognize dumb when he gets up and looks in the mirror in the morning.

Do you see him .... or the rest of the line .... kickin' ass and takin' names .... does their play excite you .... does it look like they're giving 100 % .... I don't. I see guys playing way less than 100% ? I would like to see them knock somebody's head off .... figuratively, of course.

I see a bunch of players too worried about getting a penalty called on them that they would rather not even block an opponent.

I look at it this way - are you guys a bunch of pansies? Content to see other guys owning your ass? Laffing inwardly at you?
That Dline looking at you are just human beings like you.
You should be able to win your fair share of snaps.

What I see is a bunch of young guys that haven't played much NFL football that are very confused about how to pickup stunts. This will make them look like what you're describing.

BTW, also Kenyon has been flat out bad and Scruggs is having major issues with the ol calls. Another reason the ol has been looking so bad.

I also want to note that Tunsil and Howard played little in camp, if at all. The communication between the tackles and guards is important in regards to how to react to stunts and shifts. The work was never done.

Wait a minute.

Are you talking the camp activities with pads or without?

Because my mind is spinning right now thinking that these organized team activities before the season starts actually matter for some vets. Or all of them?

I'm talking about training camp and preseason. Tunsil missed all of it because of an ankle injury. Howard was coming off major knee surgery, and had a few practices in camp before shutting down. There were no snaps to develop chemistry with these guys. It's showing now when the games count. I was very concerned about Howard during the offseason. I should have been just as concerned with Tunsil.

Howard missed all of the mini camps due to rehabbing his knee. I doubt Tunsil participated in any on field activities as well during these camps.

I was watching that Pitt v. Jets game Sunday night. Late in the game, they were discussing Mike Tomlin. They relayed a story that they practice harder than most teams, with long two hour practices each Friday and it's not just a walk-thru. It's more physical in nature. And that Tomlin told them there are some FA's that won't sign here because our practices are tougher and more physical than most teams.

Would Tunsil sign there? Not a chance. Also it's borne out in the way the Steelers play. Every freaking year, Tomlin has a tough-minded, disciplined unit with fewer than average mental errors and cheap penalities. With crap for QB and crap for online, his teams always manage to be above 500.

Tomlin takes no **** from anyone and doesn't play favorites. IMHO, he's easily a top 5 HC in the NFL and remains in that category. DeMeco should be taking notes.

I remember one of his LB’s got penalized for a scuffle. Tomlin got in his face and asked how does it benefits the team. He didn’t wait until the game was over, he corrected his player right then and there.

All 32 NFL teams have to abide by these NFL practice rules.

The Steelers have to abide by the rules and all practices are filmed and subject to audit. If the Steelers use some of their14 padded practices on Fridays, then more power to them. Otherwise, I call BS. Not sure how Tomlin is able to see how other teams practice to make that claim.

Sorry, just had to keep it real. Wouldn't surprise me if Collinsworth pulled this story out of his arse.

Honestly I'm not as pessimistic as some with the team and don't want them throwing around heavy draft capital for non star players.

I'd throw the moon and sun at Dexter Lawrence but I'm not convinced NYG would actually trade him.

Overall if a cheap vet is available for secondary help that's probably the only route I'd go and cheap goes for draft capital price and cap hit.

How does Dexter Lawrence's name come up? He's in the first year of a 4 year extension and balling out. Not going anywhere.

Did you Hear the story Collinsworth related to the audience? He said some FA’s wouldn’t sign there, and that that was just fine with Tomlinson because they want guys that like to be pushed hard. And he specifically talked about vets. They don’t do the vet treatment in Pittsburgh. Vet or rookie - your going to work and be coached hard. I think it’s utterly ridiculous to give vets days off as long as they are healthy.

You can say it’s made up. But then be ready to tell me why the Steelers haven’t had a losing season since 2003. If you think about it, that’s an amazing record of excellence. Why then? Magic water? Cuter cheerleaders?

I totally buy the story Collinsworth told 100%.

Thank you. I was being sarcastic.

Still good information.

I read your recount of the story. And unless the Steelers are in pads on Fridays, they are not more "physical" than the other teams. They aren't blocking and tackling in shirts and shorts. Do they practice at a faster tempo? Maybe. Maybe not. How would Tomlin know unless he was at the other 31 Friday practices?

Again, sorry. I don't take announcers BS broadcast filler as gospel. Never have.

Yep. Also… Not buying the refusal on the part of FA’s on how practices are run. Especially at a championship organization. FA’s -are- going to want to play in the playoffs. Super bowls bring tons of accolades and money to them.

Pittsburgh was one of Brandon Aiyuk's preferred trade destinations.

Tunsil's 4th year in the NFL and he made the Pro Bowl. He knew he was in line for a big payday especially with the draft picks we gave up. One thing Tunsil is not and that is dumb when it comes to getting those contracts.

Probably just because NYG are bad and look like they need a rebuild.

In actuality you're right and he's not available and all they really need is a QB (best of luck getting one though) and then tune it up from there.

I believe Bryce Young and Will Levis will be available this offseason. How many 6th round picks do the Giants have?
If I'm the Giants (or Cleveland, or possum holler), I'm calling Detroit to ask about the availability of Hendon Hooker. He looks like he's fully recovered from his injury & he played well enough in the preseason to win the back-up role to Goff. But the way Goff is playing, I doubt Hooker will be getting much PT anytime soon. Hooker would be worth making a run at & a far better option than the two you mentioned (in jest, I'm sure. lol).

I’m sure many folks might remember me talking up and mocking Hooker to the Texans.

I like Hooker, but what would the Texans have to give up to obtain his services via trade?

I don’t think the Lions would have any desire to trade Hooker. Hooker could move on to a potential starting gig in 2 more seasons…..unless the Lions get an offer they can’t refuse.
