You can’t have your cake and eat it too.
Well, if this is actually true. I can see the NFL stepping in. And working something like: If Watson goes to jail and will not be playing for (lets say 18 months). The Texans have to give the Dolphins an early 2nd and 3rd and pay "X" % of his contact for that period. However, due to the cap the % they have to pay is broken up over a few seasons.

@CloakNNNdagger do you have any information about this deal? Is it possible or is it just more talking heads? I know Glazer, for what his report is worth, said something about keeping an eye on the Texans to move Watson by the deadline. I know if anyone knows how much if any of this is fact you probably will.

I'm worried that if the off-season comes around, interested teams may want to call the Texans bluff. This year the Texans can hold fast because his salary is $10.5M, but in 2022 it jumps to $35M. The Texans' ownership do not want him on the team (IMO) nor does he want to be here, if teams low ball do you think the Texans will keep him on the bench next year if his legal issues are not resolved?
Yep. It's a game of chicken. At some point, someone is going to blink. As a Texans fan, I assume it'll be our franchise ultimately getting the short straw. I'm just conditioned to be cynical at this point, I guess. lol

McClain was on the search committee, he should know.
Yep, one of the "committees", at least.

There was the so-called ad hoc committee that included Tony Dungy, who denied any official connection and said he had a conversation with Cal. And Cal being Cal, he blathered and misrepresented that conversation as some sort of endorsement. I'd imagine it was the same for the other members of that ad hoc committee, especially considering Andre Johnson's ultimate public statement.

At least McClain was with the group that is actually employed by the Texans. No doubt he's being used as a tool, but at least it's a somewhat useful tool that has a clear connection to the front office.

McClain has a long history of not knowing and presenting it as fact. He hasn't had credibility since the oilers. I don't give his opinion much weight (pun intended.)

Whip cream for dinner? @Double Barrel is easily the best poster on this site.
Thanks for the kind words, man, but really it's y'all that makes this place tick. I just screen out the massive spam attempts and offer a little snark from time to time for levity.

His performance isn't relevant to our conversation. It's the action the nfl takes or doesn't when he's back in the spot light. He isn't in the spotlight here. He would be starting after a trade and the nfl would be forced in someway to respond.

Do you think they want a potential sexual predator as the face of the league?

They'll act to save face for the league. That is not speculation.
I thought Mike Vick would never work in the league again after being found guilty.

Obviously, I was completely wrong and the NFL's corporate marketing partners worked overtime to rehab his image.

I figure the same will be extended to Watson once the dust settles. The league has a way of smoke screening its very talented players, especially the ones still in their prime.

It's just a matter of time.

They made a big stank over some dogs, so we can best believe they will make a stank over some women.
True, but I never ever heard anyone disparaging the dogs or accusing them of extortion like we've already seen with Watson's accusers.

Animals are most likely elevated higher than women in this regard, simply because everyone perceives animals as victims. I never heard/read anyone defending Vick outside of the culture he grew up in, but otherwise he was rightfully vilified.

Watson already has an army of sycophants making threats toward his alleged victims. And I have absolutely no doubt that whatever fanbase gets him on their team will circle the wagons and make all kinds of ruckus to defend him regardless of the outcomes of his trials.

Sports fans tend to have short and very selective memories sometimes.

Could have sworn Cal mentioned Papavitch & Jimmy Johnson
He did, but they were probably just telephone conversations like he had with Dungy.

Why would the NFL step in if a team is willing to pull the trigger knowing what could possibly happen? That's on them and the NFL shouldn't have to come in and save them.

I agree. But, this is uncharted water. In most cases the player is playing or on the CEL. With Watson so many people are saying he did things and demanding a trade. The Texans likely want him gone so they don't have the problem and get some great picks. However, nothing official is going to happen until 2022 if I understand correctly. Meaning he can play, but had covid not happened he would have been in hearings by now. It comes down to it could be a long time before the verdict. So a team wants to cover their own butt. Houston could wait, but to move on they have to move him. If the trade partners want security... that is why I think the NFL may step in. In order to get the prenup fair.

Sorry, but round and round it goes, and everyone has got to get into the act.............of contributing nothing to what really is going to happen. [BTW, the Texans would be less than wise to take Tua with a hip that has only so many miles to go........unless they would be able to find another less wiser team that would be ready to take Tua immediately off their hands for more value.]

I am hearing Miami is a go for 2 1st round, a 2nd, Tua and 2 3rd picks and a prenuptial for any legal problems. And the sticking point is that prenuptial. Because, no team has ever written something that will give some type of pick package back if a player goes to jail.

I heard this on "Turned up for Watt" podcast from Monday.
If I were Caserio…..the moment they table their prenuptial request is the moment I would stand up and tell them they can go duck themselves. You want Watson for this season and I’ll take all the risk thereafter….right? Okay, let’s say I you some protection so you’d have Watson for this season and maybe thereafter…..your cost will be CB-Howard and LG- Eichenberg today. Include your 2022 RD2 pick and I’ll include Scharping or Howard in the deal. If Watson goes to jail….you still have Tua plus Scharping or Howard to fill your LG vacancy. If Watson is found innocent, then the package of picks (4) would be spread out over the 2022 and 2023 draft….which includes RD1’s in both and maybe a RD3.

Because there is a chance WD40’s situation isn’t resolved before the next draft I suspect a prenup would be conditional picke. EX: The 1st for 2023 turns into a 3-4 if he goes to jail. Or something to that effect.

What needs to kept in mind is that depositions will be wrapped up in February or March. At this point the legal process can move forward with increased speed. Don't know when Watson's new contract kicks in or how it is paid out, but the 2022 offseason and minicamp could be impacted. But during this period trials could begin. It is at this point in the proceedings that a suspension would become more likely. If or when Watson is suspended, then the Texans would be off the hook financially.

The Texans really wouldn't be in a quandary until the start of the 2022 season if the legal process hasn't become clear.

But what if he only spends a year or less in jail then comes back and plays for 10 years at pro bowl level? This has to be taken into account.

What would be neat is if the Texans could simply rent Watson's services for this year. Then next year when things become more clear, proceed with a trade.

I’m sure a scenario like you described is part of why a deal hasn’t been done. Not everyday you get a franchise QB as (allegedly) criminally perverted as WD40.

That’s why I mentioned players only and maybe a 2022 RD2 in exchange for an additional player. Picks could be on the table or off the table completely depending on a guilty or innocent verdict. Bottom line, the Dolphins would be renting Watson for however long he gets to play. In either scenario….the Dolphins got Watson for the remainder of this season and maybe a majority or all of the 2022 season before a decision is rendered. As for Goodell, his position could be that Watson plays until a verdict is rendered….which may be all the Dolphins need to execute the trade.

In my scenario, I’d be perfectly fine if the trade yielded:

2021
Texans Get:
CB- Howard
LG- Eichenberg
RD2 Pick

Dolphins Get:
QB- Watson
LG- Howard or Scharping

2022 / No Decision or Guilty or Innocent
No Decision:
RD2

Guilty:
Nothing for Watson

Innocent:

2023

So now you're going to skin Watson............that'll certainly up his value! :foottap:
Only way I agree to a Miami prenup in trade for Watson….give me CB- Howard and LG- Eichenberg in the trade. If Miami needs a LG to fill the hole in their OL….I’d include their choice of Howard or Scharping in return of a 2022 RD2 pick. Over course the RD2 is part of the immediate compensation for Watson.

Miami gets to rent Watson for this season and some or all of the 2022 season or until a final verdict is announced. The big bump in the road would come down to Goodell stepping in and letting both teams know that Watson can take the field until a verdict (guilty) is announced. Of course, if he’s innocent that’ll kick in the back-end of this trade….the agreed upon draft picks.

This risk is now spread out equally.

You really believe that Goodell is going to let Watson see the field for any team before the civil, local criminal and federal investigations and cases are thoroughly resolved??

Maybe, I can interest someone in buying my river front home.

Has nothing to do with what I can determine and everything to do with Goodell. Goodell has made no announcements to date….so both teams could approach him with their trade and let him decide if he’s going to make a call before a court hearing or verdict has been announced.

He’s never, publicly or behind closed doors (that I know of), warned the Texans about starting Watson. My guess, the Texans have moved on from Watson after his trade demands, refusal to play another down for the team, and his current legal situation.

First of all, the Texans will not put Watson out there for so many reasons, the least of which he goes out there and fakes an injury or better yet suffers a significant injury. Trying to trade an injured player who suffers an ACL-level injury, who has unresolved multi civil suits, who is under criminal grand jury investigation, who has the FBI involved, who is looking at very least a long suspension, or even an "indefinite" suspension or "indefinite" leave of absence on the Commissioner's Exempt List.

But if the Texans try to field him.............

I understand that DW4 will not play another down for the Texans. I get all of that. That doesn't preclude the fact that he could. If that threat would invoke being put on the CEL I don't understand why that isn't already the case.

That’s one theory. My theory is that it is the NFL forcing the Texans and the leagues hand in this matter.I’m willing to accept either theory but somebody needs to come up with a reason why the trade matter is stone cold dead in the NFL right now. I believe the forced trade issue is a big deal in the league offices. It could blow the parity issue to pieces it would seem.

I think you're right. I mean be it the NFL or just an agreement between the two teams. I don’t see how a team is going to give us say 2 1st round picks and multiple players and picks...without a fall back in their favor. And sadly they would hold the power. "We give you all of this for our franchise QB. But, if he did go to jail we want 75% of what we gave you back." Seems like that would be what a team would do. If I were a teams GM I would need that or better to do the deal now. 2yrs about isn't too long for them to wait if they don't get a sweet prenuptial in the deal. Or worse, they give us a few picks like a 1st and 3rd. But, if he goes to jail...they owe nothing. And we have to give them a 2nd (a perfect middle between 1st and 3rd round picks).

I think it hasn't happened because it is so unprecedented. A star player accused of a crime has. But, I don't recall a player accused of multiple crimes of sexual misconduct (20+) ever happening. So the NFL is waiting for some more information so that when they do something it is not a mess like Ray Rice. And they have to be certain that they make the penalty fit the crime. Which if they do something is likely to be big

Well yeah, I totally agree with you. But these are different issues. In the meantime is the NFL also stonewalling any possible trade Scenario? I say this because even though the prudent thing for any GM would be to wait to see what DW’s disposition is I dont believe all owners or GM’s would use proper discretion. Hell DW sure didn’t. Just makes me theorize that Goodell may be orchestrating how this will play out so the DW style trade demands don’t take root.

Exactly. I don’t know of any, ever. So, as I said in the previous post, the NFL can't afford to screw up with this one. They could wait till he is in court room and then nail him. I kinda have a feeling it will be almost incentive based in a way. If only the civil suits are guilty, he only gets say 6 games. If they are all guilty including the criminal charges, he gets a year...he could get more. Heck, he could be banned from the NFL if every case is a guilty verdict. Now, if found innocent I think he should still be fined or suspended based on his conduct. As I don't know of any other players who have use social media for massages from random women. That's asking for trouble as his PR team warned him about and he ignored them. So, miss 2 games and a stiff fine for if nothing else misconduct and the NFL having to spend an unknown amount for their investigation.

Edit: If rumors are true perhaps Hopkins is going to be hit with charges. Some are saying he was who showed Watson how to do it

Michael Vick?
Make note of the NFL's delay in acting on Vick's actions.

@Texansballer74 has part of the explanation. The other part is that Watson has not been placed in a position of actually playing in a game. If that were to change, he would find himself immediately on the CEL. If a trade were even allowed by the League, at the first sign that the receiving team would try to play him, he would immediately find himself on the CEL.

I'm not going to go into all previous issues, but Michael Vick was busted upon a search warrant on April 25, 2007............he was not suspended until August 24, at which time he finally admitted to all of his involvement in the dog fighting business.
Having originally pleaded not guilty to federal charges in July 2007, he was planning to play for the Eagles, but that was never a scenario that the NFL had to deal with, since he didn't play in the preason and the Eagles' first game was not until Sept.

IIRC it didn't work out terribly well for the Falcons either. I believe a judge ruled that Vick could keep all of his signing bonus from the contract he had signed a few years earlier. I believe Goodell suspended him indefinitely after he pleaded guilty.

Just a point that a player from Miami has to be part of the trade to match Watson's salary base 10 million dollars - 3 paid thru game 5 . That seems still best to be Xavier Howard. If he were included as part of the post you quoted I would take that without any risk aversion steps. I would also tell the Dolphins that they will have full access to Watson for 2021 which would get them at minimum in my opinion to a playoff berth and possibly deeper. That in itself is worth a lot of risk.
We should not forget that the legal experts here have said that the earliest Watson will probably go on trial if indicted is 2023 which indicates to me a good portion if not all of 2022 he could be eligible to play; again that's if he is indicted.

To clarify Miami only has SF round 1, their own round 2 and two round 3s as of now for 2022. That plus both 2023 round ones would be my goal but would settle for the highest although both should be at end of round one and why I think Ross will go for it. Howard has to be part to match DW as Miami has only ~ $2m space now. A restructure of someone could also manage that but I don't see who. I've stated before that Miami wants to move Howard due future debate over his contract.

Just curious but what would speed up the trial process in 2022? My understanding is that in most trials the defendant's attorney tries to slow the process down. Others here have said that 2023 looks more likely to be a trial date set. Are you anticipating clearing of the massive backup at courts over the next year?

In my scenario, I’d be perfectly fine if the trade yielded:

2021
Texans Get:
CB- Howard
LG- Eichenberg
RD2 Pick

Dolphins Get:
QB- Watson
LG- Howard or Scharping

2022 / No Decision or Guilty or Innocent
No Decision:
RD2

Guilty:
Nothing for Watson
RD2

Innocent:
2022
RD1
RD2
2023
RD1 (2)

2023 / Guilty or Innocent
Guilty:
Nothing for Watson

Innocent:
2023
RD1
RD2
RD3
2024
RD1
RD2
2025
RD1
Isn't a rented item usually higher than one that is purchased? If 2021 seems to be games that Watson could play why wouldn't the cost be higher for that season and then the risk aversion take place in 2022 or 2023?

Has nothing to do with what I can determine and everything to do with Goodell. Goodell has made no announcements to date….so both teams could approach him with their trade and let him decide if he’s going to make a call before a court hearing or verdict has been announced.

He’s never, publicly or behind closed doors (that I know of), warned the Texans about starting Watson. My guess, the Texans have moved on from Watson after his trade demands, refusal to play another down for the team, and his current legal situation.
Goodell was sitting in Stephen Ross's box last game.

Many around here think he'd be put on CEL the moment anyone tries to play him. IMO, it's just speculation, but a lot of people treat that as a foregone conclusion.
Many of those same ones said Goodell would put Watson on CEL if he appeared at training camp iirc.

I understand that DW4 will not play another down for the Texans. I get all of that. That doesn't preclude the fact that he could. If that threat would invoke being put on the CEL I don't understand why that isn't already the case.
What benefit comes with Watson being on the CEL other than the team being able to add a 53rd person to the roster?
