Kubiak's Scheme

Here is a brief breakdown of the basic scheme the Broncos used against the Patriots.

It seems as if Kubiak heavily favors a two back set with a TE on the right side (i.e., classic pro-style formation). They rarely line up in the i-formation, rather the FB is normally offset to the left side. The Broncos went to 3 WR sets no more than for 10-15 plays. The TE, FB, and Center are all very important. Additionally, the Broncos often run against the grain, which would bode well for both Reggie Bush and DD.

We need an upgrade at the TE position, or hope Joppru can finally survive injury. Additionally, we need an athletic center (not McKinney - move him to left guard with a restructured deal). I would also like to see Wells moved to FB. The Denver scheme gives 5+ handoffs to the FB position each game as well as several passes. He could move to TB as a change of pace. I know he wants to be a fulltime TB, but even at FB in this scheme he would get more consistent chances than the last several years.

They may go to 3WR sets a couple times more depending on the defense they face. They do enjoy the weak side off-set base formation and it is the primary call out of it. At TE we can get a young athletic pass catcher/decent run blocker in FA(Teyo Johnson) and Moran Noriss at FB is a good fit, he can catch well enough and I honestly dont know if Wells is ballsy enough to play FB enough for people not to spot a trend in switching them. I would like to see Wells used more like Mike Anderson this year, not as the number 1, but the number 2 who really gets to pound it out. One thing to add is that DD should not have as many injury problems due to the fact that they believe in sharing the load. Bentley, Hodgon, or Mangold would be nice fits for the center position. Bentley and Mangold really are terrors when they pull and play with a really nasty nature. That is what I want out of my Center a guy like Mawae just upset that you lined up opposite him.

Good post.

I want LeCharles Bentley.

I think Hogdon will be moved to guard because he is not quite as atheltic as I would like at center in the zone blocking scheme, but has more than good enough feet to be an effective guard.

Scheme or no scheme the one thing I picked up from Kubiak was that he isn't going to sit on a lead, he is going to try and win the game by moving the ball up field. I think Carr can exceed with all the rollouts.

I would like to see Bentley in a Texans uniform also

Great post - real football talk!
I could ruin it with "Vince Young Day is now a National Recognized Holiday... Go Vince" but I'm not.. thanks for the info bd and cad.. I think Kubiak will be great here and I can't wait for next season.

The thing I was most impressed with in their play calling was the mixing of pass/run calls on 1st and 2nd down, along with the way they where not at all afraid to take their chances down the field in non obvious big play downs (2nd short, 3rd in long)

It seems like they mix up there routes on the boot alot better than Pendry/Palmer did. Texans like the 5 yard drag across the field from the outside guy giving David an easy outlet and an easier throw. The broncos attacked the middle and had much more variety in the PA rollout game. Jake even went to the middle of the field a little bit, which i cant remeber Carr doing.

yes, it does seem like the only time we ever use the middle is the drag route to AJ, which is ussually effective. however, the only deep post i ever remeber us using this season was to AJ against Jags, which went for a TD. other then that, we just stick to dump-offs and outs..yay...

Another thing I saw in the Denver game was a roll-out to the left. That happened at least a few times. I remember only one time, off the top of my head, where Carr rolled out to his left, and we ended up getting a TD (Indy, game 1 I think). I think Kubiak is a little more creative in that aspect of the game.

pendry showed his genuis after not going back to the deep post after the texans scored on two long plays to AJ and either Bradford or Gaff (been studying all nite...well just a little bit, but I'm sure some you remeber how that goes).

Of course protection cures all...its hard to throw a deep post into the middle of a cover-2 when you can't get protection. Thats we constantly saw the texans try the 3 yard hitch and other uber short routes tryin to get under a DB who who playin the flat

Sorry, Charlie, but Kubiak was not calling the plays, MS was. See NFL films, HBO's Inside the NFL, etc. Maybe K does sometimes but he sure wasn't calling them last weekend.

Nice link. I missed it the first time.

I like how he discusses analyzing what their players do well and playing to their strengths. The best coaches do that.

As for the tight end position, though I am interested in an upgrade, I also wonder how existing personnel would work in a new scheme. To put 2005 in context, I just want to make the following observations:

1. In 2005, there was all sorts of noise about figuring out ways to get the ball in AJs hands more. Some of the short stuff that would usually go to a TE seems to me they were trying to force to AJ (a lot of the predictable swing pass) or a delayed dump off to DD.

2. Especially with the drastic protection issues and Oline injuries and personnel rotating door, the TE was being kept in a lot to block.

3. IIRC, Marcellus Rivers was looking better near the end of the season. Hard to tell if that is better play or just a way easier schedule at the end of the year.

As for Wells at FB, I am non-fond of that. Moran Norris is much better there, and Wells is better for a change of pace RB and depth. He is nice on ST too.

It's been covered many times... Kubiak calls the plays down to Shanahan and he relays them to the QB. I believe that he would also take the opportunity to change the plays if he sees fit. However, Shanahan has said that Kubiak calls the plays but they both go over the gameplan (which is put together by Kubiak). Shanny also apparently gives Plummer tips and suggestions while giving him the plays (makes sense).

I will try to find links, but I am sure that there are many covering this topic on other threads in this forum...

Read the post above and also the link to the story where Shanahan says Kubiak calls the plays.

I wonder if you'd have the huevos to tell Shanahan in his face he's a liar and the NFL show guys are right. That he does in fact call the plays as the NFL analyst have said and what he said about Kubiak calling the plays is all bull.

speaking of Wells... he has improved alot as a HB over the last few seasons.. and im wondering if it is possible that he might be capable of more with better coaching as well.

Do you think his lack of "real" power running... e.g. running through people.. is just the way Wells runs..or could he be taught to do a better job at it by a better coach? I find it hard to beleive that a guy of his size and athletic ability would not find it easy to adopt a more powerful running style.

Just a thought.

One of the things that I noted was that he believes that there are multiple way to win. In my mind, it means that he is not going to come in here and force the Texans into being the Broncos when the parts don't fit for that.

Yeah, I noticed that too. That it isn't all the flavor of the week kinda coaching.

I also like how he tried to prop his players up. And found ways to bring up their positives and show confidence in them.

Our team needs a confidence and swagger injection. :redtowel:
