It's Time to Think Draft / Plans for 2009

I like Johnson, and I like Orakpo. I favor the Longhorn because of strength of schedule.

The way I see it for next year's draft, the Texans need a DT and a DE bad. The question is where to put your money/draft pick. Right now, the Texans can't stop the run, and they can't stop the pass. Another hotshot DE, though, I think is the missing peg. To have a second monster on the line would give the Texans a damn good pass rush. They may still be susceptible to the run, but I think it will take an upgrade combo of linebacker and DT to improve against the run.

So all I have so far is:

1st: Orakpo/Johnson
2nd: DT/LB
3rd: QB (Harrell?)
4th: RB

I'm not seeing anything to make me really think the RB answer is out there. If the right QB is there in any round but the first, then I say take him. At this point, neither Schaub nor Rosenfels can seem like "the answer." It'd behoove the Texans to develop another QB while taking a defensive lineman that can really help them out.
 
My ideal draft at this point would go something like:

1st round: DE Brian Orakpo Texas
I am not a UT guy so no bias here but this guy is a beast.

2nd round: SS Patrick Chung Oregon
Gives us a guy that can be a force vs the run and provide very nice range and pass coverage for a SS. Would compliment Eugene Wilson well I believe and gives us at least 1 guy that we can bank on at the safety position in general.

After this its really a crapshoot but I'll throw out a couple positions I would like to go after and maybe a few possible prospects at those positions.

At least 1 large DT ala Okam last year regardless if Okam starts playing well. We need to develop some size at DT and getting another fatty works for me. Later in the draft I would look for a guy like Ron Brace out of BC.

A big back to compliment Slaton and pretty much do what Ahman is doing this year. Arian Foster isn't huge and Tennessee has been a dissapointment but that guy could be had at a relative bargain.

Perhaps as early as the third I would look to an athletic interior offensive lineman with some decent size. No names here for you.

Lastly, I wouldn't mind spending a 5/6 or 7 on a nice punting prospect to replace Turk. I know we have a lot of holes on this team but if we find a keeper its worth it.

As for the rest of the off season, in FA it would be nice to be able to grab 1 stud like a Haynesworth/Suggs/Dansby but I don't see it happening. Instead I would like us to grab a veteran DT with some size to compete with or outright replace Travis Johnson. TJ can stick around as a back up/rotation guy but there are only so many snaps to go around. Weaver and Greenwood are gone as well as Ahman. Faggins is not resigned and we look for a fifth CB that can be a big factor for us on ST like Molden has been this year or Harry Williams was going to be. If we could find some interior linemen with some athleticism and decent size I bring em in to at least compete with Brisiel and Myers but not breaking the bank there. Richard Smith gets fired and we bring in Sean Mcdermott from Philly to install a nice fire-zone defense.

He had like 3 or 4 batted passes, at least.

I've been raised a Tech fan, but don't get to see them much since I live here in Houston. But, the few games I've seen from him this season have been fantastic. I don't know if the talk about him taking off plays is legit or something that is parroted and snowballs into something bigger than the truth, but everytime I see him he is fantastic.

But, I don't think he is even the best DE on the team. Derrick Morgan had a quiet game tonight, but I think over the next couple of years he is going to develop into a premiere DE.

1. Terrence Cody or Brian Orakpo
2. Cushing, Selvie, Spikes (one will be there)
3. Jeff Byers C/G USC
4. Jeremiah Johnson, RB Oregon
5. Clay Mathews DE/OLB USC
 
I dont want anybody from UT. More times than not, they underachieve. We need OLB's and secondary. Witha fat **** sprinkled in to help stop the run. Okam isnt it.

No, but I'd hate to sit around and wait for a guy who:
1. Dropped to the fifth round because he was notoriously lazy and unambitious
2. Has been said (by Kubiak) to be "a long, long way away"
3. Has historically underachieved

Me too ... I'll take either Cody or Raji in the 1st and my highest rated DE or OLB in round two ..... as much as I would like Orakpo to be a Texan I think a solid guy in the middle who can collapse a pocket will do more for this defense against both the run and pass.

Just wanted to see why you thought that. Those are good reasons.

My first choice would be Orakpo. Then Curry. I also like Vontae Davis but I don't think we will go CB in the first.

But I'm not apposed to Cody at all. Whatever helps the team the most.

That would be a very good draft.

We would be very lucky if the draft fell that way.

That way we could sign a couple of FA CB's & fill most of the holes

We need to need to solidify the middle of our OL/ DL & upgrade Greenwood
& Diles OLB spot.

He is getting over 6.5 yards per carry this season, has over 1000 yards, and has almost 10 TDs this year.

We don't have to get a DE in the first 2 or 3 rounds.

A good 5th+ round prospect is 6-1 260 lb senior DE Neefy Moffett 52 tackles 21 TFL, 8.5 sacks, and 4 FFs. Intercepted a pass this season and returned it for a touchdown.

Here's my take on why thats flawed thinking:

Another DE gets you pressure from the edge , another long path to the QB like we see from MW on a consistant basis. Give MW and Bulman who has played pretty well since getting a chance a shorter path by collapsing the middle of the pocket and cutting off angles giving the QB fewer lanes of escape. A stud in the center of the line makes it much more difficult to double the guy's on the outside.

It is also a step in getting better against the run , OLB / DE can be addressed in the next two picks.


Actually a great DT may remove the need for picking another DE allowing those picks to be used at OLB , SS and the interior OL at C and RG .... all four of which need serious attention.
 
Not to really disagree or anything, but I'm reminded of some large DTs we had in the 3-4 a few years ago who could break through the line with some regularity, but couldn't run fast enough to catch a QB if their lives depended on it.

Personally, I think our secondary is the biggest problem by far and that we can't get to the QB in .8 seconds anyway, but that's just me.

Maybe we should go after a guy like Elvis Dumervil: a proven pass rusher with concerns that make him drop a couple rounds

Thats an idea , I just dont know who that guy is in the upcoming draft .... tho there always seem to be a couple that fall to the mid rounds.

I did a mock in 06 with Dumervil going to the Texans .... I'll see if I can scrounge it up and see where I had him going and how close it was to the actual pick of #126. The Texans took Owen Daniels at #98 in that draft , would you trade OD of Elvis ?! .

No doubt OD was a good pick in the 4th round .... but to get 21 sacks in the first two seasons out of a pick even lower is fantastic .... Tho this year Dumervil's stats are down .... I'd probably have to stick with OD as well.

I did a search for that mock and cant locate it , I found one in which Beerlover mentions him as a possibility in round 2 along with a few others.

I agree he was impressive Sat. If he played with that kind of effert all the time I would love him opposite Mario.
