It's Time to Think Draft / Plans for 2009

I'm a texans fan... The past few week have led me to believe were not making any progress this season. So as of 11/16/08 im declaring our season OFICALLY OVER/DEAD. We really need to make some major moves:

Our Defensive coordinator has to GO, we need someone in there thats young with new strategies. Cuz we all know that everyone is tired of the texans lining up our corners 1 on 1 and getting toasted week after week. I liked what i saw in Adibi today vs he colts in his first ever start i think our likebacking core needs one more playmaker we can adress that via FA.

Ahman Green as much as i liked him when he was in GB plain and simple he doesn't have anything left in the tank and he knew that before he signed that Free Agent Contract 2 years ago. Anthony Weaver well I really dont have much to say about you other than... GET OFF THE TEAM YOUR TERRIBLE.

I wanna see dunta robinson next year I think he will be much improved coming off that knee injury. Molden, Bennet, and Reeves are all works in progress so im not giving up on them yet.

OUR DRAFT NEED TO GO LIKE THIS:

round 1)DE/Saftey (potential 1 picks:S Taylor Mays, DE Michael Johnson,S William Moore, DE Greg Selvie Orakpo is overreated to me
round 2)Saftey/Corner
round 3)OLB
round 4)Guard/Center
round 5)WR

Well tell me what you think...

I see an April draft very heavy on Defense. I would not be surprised if the first 3 of 4 picks are on defense.

Well, I think we all agree that the DC has to go. Personally, I think we need a QB. Schaub might be coachable, and he might stay on the field and perform like we know he can, but I'd feel better if they took a QB int he 2nd or 3rd round and started grooming him.

We need a CB or three. We need a safety, maybe two. We need an OLB, maybe two. We need a DT. We need a DE. We need a RG. We need a C.

How many is that so far?

Orakpo is overrated to me

The guy is 6' 4" , 265 pounds....long arms , big hands, and stays on the feid until he is barfing up body parts. When he hits the field his team mates get sky high just for the fact that he is on the field. The guy is a natural leader. Yeah you're correct the guy is real shaky.

We will draft a project, all pundits will laugh, Mel will say this is why Houston lives in the cellar in the AFC South, the fans will bitc&. blah, blah, blah

It will be a good draft for it. Shaping up to be heavy in DE/LB.

Now if we can get someone to call the D that has a working knowledge of defensive strategy.

I'm sorry Orakpo was invisible at that Texas Tech game. Personally Im more sold on Michael Johnson out of Georgia Tech

He was doing great until he got hurt. Orakpo getting hurt single-handedly lost the game for UT

Michael Johnson has done nothing in college at all. His numbers are terrible and he is a weight room guy, not a football player

Sometimes you can't measure a defensive player's impact by looking at the box score.

He was THE ONLY Texas player that was putting consistent pressure on Harrell.

Funny how you say that Orakpo is overrated at the same time you list Johnson as one of the guys you want.

I can see our DC leaving.

1st round- I can't see us going safety unless we trade down. If we stay in the top 10 where we'll be picking, CB Vontae Davis could be a great pick.

2nd round- I think one of the top safeties may fall or a highly rated linebacker. If Brandon Spikes slips to the 2nd round, I'd like us to look at him.

3rd round- maybe a safety like the Chung guy from Oregon or Pegues from Miss. St.

All excellent players.

I would love it.

I say we draft another offensive lineman. It's hard to win with constant pressure on the QB.

We are #11 in scoring offense at 23.6

We are #30 in scoring defense at 28.7

Not saying we can't draft an o-lineman.

But our main priority should be defense.

If you like missed tackles you should love Adibi. Otherwise, I'm not really sure what you liked about him.

What are you talking about? I heard Adibis name more times today than I have heard Greewoods name all year. Im not sure what you were expecting but hey it was his first real start at this level and he was very active and around the ball alot more than any OLB this team has had in awhile.

My draft:

Round 1: Aaron Curry, LB Wake Forest. I'd plug in Aaron Curry at my SLB spot. Diles would be my backup SLB. I'd have Bentley and Adibi splitting reps at WLB.

Round 2: Emanuel Cook, SS South Carolina. 5'10" 212 Versatile safety. Makes plays all over the field. Can blitz, can cover, can tackle. Better than any safety we have ever had.

Round 3: James Davis, RB Clemson. Can work between the tackles and has speed.

Round 4: Sergio Render, RG Virginia Tech. 6'3" 308. Was on the freshman and sophomore All-American teams last two years. Has been playing well this season.

Round 5: Cullen Harper, QB Clemson. 6'4" 220. 2991 yards 27 TDs and only 6 INTs last year. This year he has 2075 yards 10 TDs 12 INTs. This year hasn't been very good, but he is worth taking a shot on at the top of the 5th.

Round 6 and 7: Go for DT, DE, or a Punter. Need to replace Turk.

Dissagree! Our main priority should be to fix both lines by taking the best big uglys available to us whether theyre on the OL or the DL. This organizations biggest flaw was not taking care of this right of the bat. It should of been the #1 priority and stayed the #1 priority until it was taken care of. Name me one team taht has ever won anything with an average OL or DL. They both have to be good or one has to dominate its side enough to cover for weaker sides deficeincies.

Our OL is average at best. I dont care about stats. I care about performance at critical times of the game. Thats how an offense needs to be judged. How well they play when its most important. We get physically pushed around when we cant afford too. Thats not coaching thats being out talented. To become what we all want us to become we need to keep building both lines until they become our strength and our identity. Until this happens we will be right were we are right now.

Stienkular, Munchak, Mathews How many OL did the Oilers draft in the first round? They fixed their OL and they were contendars for years.

He had a ton of missed tackles. The fact that Greenwood is a bad player is irrelevent to the fact that Adibi missed too many tackles.

I would like an upgrade at corner-back, linebacker, safety, defensive end, running back and possibly guard/center.

I want a new defensive coordinator, because I feel that even if we had the Titans players our game plan would make them crappy.

R1: I would love Rey or Mays from USC, but with Reeves and Faggins getting starts this year, we need to invest in another corner-back. Malcolm Jenkins gets the nod as the best corner prospect in the draft. This way we can cut Faggins and still have Jenkins, Robinson, Reeves, and Molden.

R2: Best safety on the board. Myron Rolle, Florida State, William Moore, Missouri, Derek Pegues, Mississippi State.

R3: C.J. Gable, RB, USC. 6'1" 202 pounds, and another quick back with some size. Im sure we can find a bruiser to pair Gable and Slaton up with. Taylor and Green are done in Houston.

R4: Brandon Graham, Michigan. Sack machine with Michigan and should shoot up draft charts by draft time.

R5: Center/Guard that works in our scheme. Max Unger, Oregon. At 6'5" and 300 pounds he can help up front and can play in the ZBS.

R6: BPA

R7: BPA

Pretty good:

I would rather have Curry than Maualuga. Mays is a beast. I think Vontae Davis is the best CB in this draft.

R2: Best safety on the board. Myron Rolle, Florida State, William Moore, Missouri, Derek Pegues, Mississippi State.

All good player worthy of selection in that area. I like it.

R3: C.J. Gable, RB, USC. 6'1" 202 pounds, and another quick back with some size. Im sure we can find a bruiser to pair Gable and Slaton up with. Taylor and Green are done in Houston.

I would take Shonn Greene here if he is still there. I think Slaton plus a big back would be sufficient.

R4: Brandon Graham, Michigan. Sack machine with Michigan and should shoot up draft charts by draft time.

That sure would be lovely. I don't think Graham is still around in the 4th though.

R5: Center/Guard that works in our scheme. Max Unger, Oregon. At 6'5" and 300 pounds he can help up front and can play in the ZBS.

Agree with the position, but Unger won't still be around.

A lot of ACC players in there...

I like picks 1,2, and 4.

If we go running back I want a bruiser to pair with Slaton.

Not sold on Harper. If we go QB in the 5th I'm thinking Bomar (if he is still around) or Nathan Brown from Central Arkansas.

Well, my flavor of the month looks like this:

RD1: DL - I'm specifically looking at a few guys who have the elite size and/or talent. My short list of guys includes Cody, Orakpo, Selvie. End. Why take a DL here instead of a LB or a S? Because the gap in talent from #1 at DL to #4 at DL is noticeable, while the gap from #1 LB/S is much smaller to the #4. Think of this as there simply being more talent at the LB/S positions this year, specifically LB. Now, I figure us to have a top 15 pick, meaning that we can take one of the elite DL prospects (Cody is my favorite for our team) and then withOUT trading up/down/all around, we can still land a very solid NFL starter level guy like a Moore/Spikes/Mays/Cushing/Chung/Witherspoon/Curry. Those are just the LB/S guys who have a good chance to fall as of now, and you have to figure that at least one or two from that group will slide to our second pick. Stupid teams will take guys like Michael Johnson and let a Brandon Spikes slide. It happens, we benefit if we are smart (like with Ryans).

RD2: LB - As I showed earlier, it will be MUCH easier to fill this hole with a top tier talent than the DL. Also, a lot of times we will see guys like good athleticism and elite level instincts falls. Again, some teams are stupid. We can benefit. This is where I grab my top rated LB or S if he grades out higher. It's a win-win because of the depth at those positions compared to where those positions usually go in drafts.

This is as far down as I'm willing to think at this moment. I would be fine with a RB/OG/CB/C/S. Just look at some of the talent that could be there potentially: Unger, James Davis, Alphonso Smith, Chung, Luigis. This is just a quick hit list.

Just my two cents for now.

Any idea how this draft is stacking up talent wise to some of the recent drafts? Looks like its a pretty nice one all around to me and should improve if a lot of juniors declare like they are rumored to.

The top is heavy again, like usual, but there isn't as much "elite" level talent or guys who are "can't miss" (AD and Calvin Johnson). There isn't the hype with this draft (VY and Bush). It is deep draft at a majority of positions until the 2/3 rounds. A lot of NFL starters will come from this draft (profit right?). It's a very good draft if you aren't looking for a high media guy something similar to past drafts. (Some juniors change things: Tebow, JDB, Cody)

Like I said IMO youre expecting too much. After not playing real football since last year did you eexpect him to just come in and play perfect? The fact that they called his name so much shows that he at least was around the ball alot. Thats a positive sign at this stage for him. Once he adjusts hell be fine. By the end of the year we'll be reading an article in the Chron about how the coaches wish they had played him sooner. You just watch.

JDB? You mean Mark Sanchez?

I watch alot of ACC football, more than any other conference, obviously because my Noles play in the ACC. I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the better players in the league. I don't know any other conference like I know the ACC.

I want a bruiser too, but I think James Davis is a fantastic talent and could be a steal similar to Steve Slaton. The guy has 44 rushing TDs for his career at Clemson. That's pretty big time. ACC has been loaded with defensive talent over those years. His partner CJ Spiller will be a higher pick than him if he choses to come out, but I think Davis is the real workhorse. He already understands the little things about the position of RB through his extensive experience. Mainly what I am talking about is running in between the tackles. Something that Slaton is getting better and better at as the weeks move along. Plus the guy has real speed on the field, no slower than a 4.5 and probably will run a 4.4. I just hope he is there in the 3rd.

I'm not sold on Harper either, he is really a hit or miss guy. I feel like Clemson has suffered from poor offensive coaching the last 3 or 4 years, and that Harper has alot of potential.

By the end of the year we'll be reading an article in the Chron about how the coaches wish they had played him sooner. You just watch.

I agree with this, but I was high on Adibi since the first time I saw him play. I thought he would be one of the better LBs in last year's class. Still do. Same way I feel about freshman LB from Miami Sean Spence right now. You can just tell the guy is going to be a big time player.

What do you guys think about B.J. Raji out of Boston College. This guy is 6'1 323 and can really move around. I think he would be a nice compliment to Okoye in the middle. Too bad he will almost certainly be a first round pick. If we had a shot at him at the top of the second I would be ecstatic.

Raji is a well rounded player.

A big guy with power and bulk, but quick enought to make some noise as a pass rusher too.

I like him a lot.

Well we're certainly bleeding right now on the inside of our defense. Another DL guy I like is the San Jose kid, Jarron Gilbert . I know clady is off that line now. But the San Jose State kid just whipped thier Boise St. butts, Every down he was in there for four quarters. Be a nice day two pick.

I was thinking depending on how the 9ers coaching staff shakes out....Orakpo would be a perfect fit for them. Their o-line is certainly a high priorty for them....Orakpo played the rover position at Texas a few seasons back. I think he could stand up...Willis in the middle and Orakpo standing up and putting his knuckes on the ground in passing situations....that'd be hard to pass on. I thought a few months ago we'd have a shot at hm in the second if we moved up. I don't think that's true anymore. I don't think he'll make it out of the top five.

lol

I'm expecting too much out of our starting linebacker by expecting him to tackle a runningback when he gets to him? Really?

He might turn out to be a good player, but so long as we are content with fielding CBs who can stay with guys but not defend the pass and LBs who can get to guys but not bring them down, we are stuck watching team put 30+ on us every Sunday.

LOL is right. Could you over simplify it anymore? It was his first real playing time since college and the guy makes 13 tackles (twice as much as any other player that day) Against one of the hardest to defend offenses in the NFL. If you are unhappy with that then yes, you were expecting too much!

Look at how many tackles Diles missed his first few games. Sorry but not many players come right in and play perfect. Yes he missed a couple of tackles but he also showed that he reads, reacts and gets to the ball in a hurry. That is a great sign. But hey if you want to dwell on the negatives of his play despite there being so many positives then have at it.

I like James Davis a lot. I think he would be a good RB to pair with Slaton. Spiller reminds me a lot more of Slaton than Davis does. Davis/Slaton combo would be great.

I would prefer Shonn Greene/Slaton but we might have to use a 2nd to get him.

Wow. I didn't realize he had 14 tackles. That does look really promising.

I'm not putting in a huge thought about it just yet, but off the top of my head just thinking right now I'd like this.

1st round - DE opposite of Mario.
2nd and 3rd round - Safety and a Corner.
4th round - Chase Daniel if he is still available.

That's all I've got so far. Come closer to draft time in 2009 I'll have a way better idea, and definitely be in more detail.

You sure did turn that argument around on a dime. Adibi played a hell of a game on Sunday.

I watched the game and didn't look at the stat sheet.

My impression from the game was the our run defense is pathetic, and Adibi was a major culprit in that, missing several tackles in the backfield. Still, he did have a nice stop in the backfield against the Ravens, and I didn't realize he had racked up so many tackles against the Colts.

I would prefer Shonn Greene/Slaton but we might have to use a 2nd to get him.

Greene would be good, but I also like Rashad Jennings from Liberty. He is about the same size and should have a good 40 time for a man his size. He actually transferred from Pitt to Liberty for family health issues. He can carry the rock and we could have a real Thunder and Lightening Running system.

Michael Johnson is looking very impressive right now for Georgia Tech. I know there are a mixed bag of opinions about him but he definitely has the talent. If Orakpo is not there for our pick and we decide to go DE I think this guy would be a menace opposite Mario.

He is doing something I've never seen him do before. Usually when he gets blocked he just stops moving. Tonight he is putting his hands up and getting in the passing lanes.

That INT was thrown right at his face mask. Don't mean to take anything away from him though.

If the QB throws the ball at your face, catch it and take it for six. He did.

Yeah I actually liked the play where the Miami tackle was called for the face mask against him better but he is making a nice impact this game on quite a few plays.

I think the best player on Georgia Tech's team is Jonathan Dwyer.

He is a sophomore and plays FB in their triple option.

He is getting over 6.5 yards per carry this season, has over 1000 yards, and has almost 10 TDs this year.

Already has over 100 in this one.

we could steal dwyer in later rounds he is a pounder in that option offense, but once again on national tv Michael Johnson doesn't dissapoint he is so physical, has to be double teamed constantly, i dont see many end with his versatility & non stop motor, and a pick 6 at DE tonight? SICK... :trophy:

Georgia Tech has 350 rushing yards with more than 20 minutes left to play.

We could see over 450-500 tonight. Poor Miami has no clue how to stop it.

They are gettin 11 yards PER CARRY!

Georgia Tech wins 41-23 and it wasn't even that close. They took out all their starters when it was 41-10.

472 yards rushing on 8.4 yards per carry. Wow.

Dwyer didn't play in the second half but still had 128 and 2 TDs rushing.
