Injury Thread

Jeff Allen and his injury have been released from the Texans with an injury settlement.

I've emphasized that besides his position change, the 2017 season has been a catastrophic injury year for him. At the beginning of the year, he sustained a high ankle sprain........an injury that he never got over. He then suffered a compensatory knee injury the 1st week of Nov, which was overshadowed by a significant hand injury in the 2nd week in Nov........again injuries that followed him and affected the remainder of his season. If that wasn't enough, he suffered a significant concussion mid Dec...........an injury that kept him from participating in any football activities until the end of the season...........an injury that deflected the still ongoing effects of all the other 3 injuries. The injury settlement mostly resulted from the long-term high ankle sprain.

In early 2016, he also dealt with a long-term severe calf tear which affected the entire season and led to a compensatory knee issue shortly after the initial tear. Two significant concussions topped the 2016 season, 1 in OCT, 1 in Dec. A significant high ankle sprain, compensatory to his season-long calf tear issue, occurred the beginning of Jan 2017. At the end of the 2016 season, he underwent a "minor" ankle surgery, which obviously did not positively affect his high ankle condition or his performance in 2017.

Clowney as I've posted numerous times should not be played at DE because of the markedly increased stresses on his knees that is required to come out of a 3 point stance. Although not reported, he assuredly has hip problems (86% of sports hernia patients.......and he had bilateral sports hernia repairs). He not only has his microfracture knee to worry about, his other knee has already required surgery. He's had increasing problems with his left foot and right ankle. This is a pattern of cascading lower joint deteriorations. He's running out of joints to effectively compensate his previous injuries.

Watt will have problems at DE, constantly banging against big bodies. He now also needs to be concerned about his knee coming out of the 3 point (no doubt, despite not being emphasized, with a tibial plateau fracture, he has undoubtedly sustained meniscus and articular cartilage damage). Finally, to be effective as either a DE or an OLB, he needs to be able to swim, twist and go low and come up (low pad level) against strong resistance, not to mention wrapping and tackling............all maneuvers requiring a strong, healthy core.

I am not very confident in either player "lasting" on the field, when in order to avoid all the stresses hazardous to their conditions, they may be left with the only safer option of "bull rushing"...............and hoping not to encounter significant resistance on the way.

They both have huge injury risk. Just curious what you would do with them as GM and what you would do as head coach.

If the natural history of these two players plays out as would be realistically expected (no crystal balls here), there are no real great options to be had as HC.......but would play them off the line and taking routes with the least possible contact/resistance. As GM, the task is equally difficult...........but I would be thinking of finding them a place on another team with as much value in return as possible.

don't y'all do it....

I mean it is pretty obvious.. He fell and tried to break his fall with his arm, the basic laws of physics did the rest. Hell, even Jax from M.K. wouldn't be able to break that fall!

Phew! I apologize!

I hope he gets well soon. :)

He actually sustained 4 fractures involving his shoulder, which required a shoulder replacement. It all started when he stubbed his big toe and tripped.........also fracturing it and now finding himself in a boot.

Let's just be realistic about it. Our rosy predictions assume there will be no key injuries, and we all know there will be. Until the team hires a competent medical staff to deal with those injuries, we are going nowhere.

Players and coaches, trainers also have to be honest with the medical staff. This isn't always the case, especially with the players

Not that you can blame them all that much when it's their livelihood at stake

I still think it was incredibly stupid as hell to let Watt go back into that game against the chiefs, especially in a blowout.. Sometimes you have to protect the player from himself.

Looks like Watt is trying to stay optimistic, but more realistic than many.

J.J. Watt laughs off report that he crushed Texans’ conditioning test
July 24, 2018, 3:03 PM EDT

Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt stays in good shape in the offseason. And he also understands that being in good shape in July is no guarantee of staying healthy in September, October, November and December.

Watt scoffed at an ESPN report about his conditioning test, making light of it on Twitter after Adam Schefter tweeted that Chris Mortensen said Watt crushed the test and was ready to play a full season.

“lol was Mort hiding out in the bushes yesterday morning?! I feel phenomenal, but let’s focus on playing a full practice first. One day at a time boys,” Watt wrote.

Anyone who has checked out Watt’s Instagram knows that he’s been hitting the weights hard this offseason, but the more important question for Watt is whether he can stay healthy after playing in just five games last year and only three games the year before. Only time will tell if Watt is ready to play a full season.

Doc, what's the time table on McClain's return? Should I draft him in my 'washed up journalist' league? Or should I wait and get him on the waiver wire?

Tweet from @JamesPalmerTV: #Texans have placed the following players on Active/Physically Unable to Perform list: D’Onta Foreman, Jermaine Kelly Jr, Martinis Rankin, Jevoni Robinson.

So Clowney, Watt and Watson all not listed and appear to be good to go. Good sign.

From Chris Mortensen on SiriusXM...
O’Brien told Mort that JJ crushed the conditioning test. Watts knows he’s at a point where need/wants to play 16+ games this year so they will be smart with him in practice. But he’s in unbelievable shape.

Watson is coming along well, he still has footwork issues to iron out among other things. He’s a full go for camp, he will participate in 11-on-11s but nobody will be allowed to touch Watson. Don’t expect to see rookie DL in there when #4 is in for team. Anybody who touches him gets his walking papers(/s).

“We need a little bit more time to determine if he will be ready for the season.” Brian Gaine on D’Onta Foreman being placed on the active/PUP list. #Texans

Foreman will not be ready for the regular season. If they try to release him for then, he will look like it. i would put money on that. Foreman's entire future at this point in time is not one I would put any money on.

Note the careful wording of "the long-term medical outlook...is encouraging" and "he's expected to make a full recovery from his ruptured Achilles tendon." Of course, a full recovery is an expectation for most anyone suffering such an injury. However, nowhere are they making prognostications of his long-term football outlook (or short-term for that matter).

Texans unsure if D'Onta Foreman will be ready for start of season

By Aaron Wilson, Houston Chronicle

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. -- The long-term medical outlook for Texans running back D'Onta Foreman is encouraging as he's expected to make a full recovery from his ruptured Achilles tendon.

Whether the former University of Texas standout is ready for the start of the regular season remains up in the air. That isn't a significant change for the Texas City native who is on the active physically unable to perform list. Considering that Foreman got hurt in late November against the Arizona Cardinals while scoring a touchdown and the severity of the injury, this is a normal amount of recovery time.

"Work in progress right now, recovering from this injury," Texans general manager Brian Gaine said as the AFC South franchise arrived at The Greenbrier for training camp. "We need a little bit more time to determine if he's going to be ready for the season. We're not there at that stage. We think he's getting better. He's improving, but time will tell whether he's available to us when we kick off."

Bill O'Brien said not concerned about Jadeveon Clowney knee just easing him back into full activity getting him back into football shape 'He'll be ready to go' said he doesnt anticipate him in full pads Saturday Clowney primarily worked on side today

This is SEVEN MONTHS out of "simple clean up knee scope".....and not in enough football shape to participate in a controlled padded practice? It was not a simple scope clean up.

"simple clean up" = simply cleaning up the jagged pieces of cartilage fragments from the smooth, bruised bone.

Someone will give him that big money contract. How many times can the Texans tag him? It’s going to get expensive and knowing our organization, when they decide to sign him it may be too late as other contracts are probably gonna be coming up.

I'm perfectly happy with the Texans franchise tagging him for 2 years and letting him walk. I like this move, from a team standpoint. I feel for JDC because he's worked his butt off to stay on the field.

A player can be tagged 3 times.......indeed, it can become expensive. But in Clowney's case, I strongly believe that this season will make Clowney's future with the Texans clear cut.

It sucks knowing that he may ultimately have to walk on to another team, but it is what it is. He’s been great the past two seasons, but I know that his medical records indicate that them knees are a liability. Hopefully we can get to the big dance while we have a beast like him with us. Clowney is one BAD MAN shutting down the run.

When healthy. He can't stop the run from the tub.

Does anyone know what happened to the rookie 7th round CB Jermaine Kelly? Put on PUP list to start camp but don’t remember reading anything about him being injured.

No one is saying officially, but in the 2nd game of his 2014 season, he suffered a very severe high ankle sprain fracture requiring surgery and putting him out for the rest of the season. Since then, he has continued having issues with the ankle.

Texans see value in WR Sammie Coates

August 1, 2018 Updated: August 1, 2018 3:39pm

The former Pittsburgh Steelers third-round draft pick from Auburn is also adept at special teams.

Coates has made several tough catches so far at training camp

“Good work ethic, good speed, good size," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "(Can) help us, hopefully, on special teams and then does some decent stuff on offense. He’s done a good job. He’s done a good job.”

**************************************************************************************

Coates has always had dropsy problems dating back to college. But his recent string of injuries/surgeries has got to be concerning. His problems began in week 5 2016 when he sustained what was reported as a severely fractured left index finger and hand laceration for which he refused surgery and instead was treated with a large club cast. In fact, he stained not 1, but 2 fractured fingers (the 2nd fracture being of the left ring finger). Although he returned to play in week 6 following these injuries, he virtually dropped every pass that targeted him the remainder of that season. It also didn't help that he sustained a hamstring tear the 3rd week in Dec. which left him crippled through the Jan 2017 playoffs.

2017 did not start off any better than where he left off in 2016. He finally gave up the ghost and underwent repair of both fractured fingers along with significant associated tendon damage.

Screen_Shot_2017_05_31_at_10.32.46_AM.0.png

Within a month of these repairs, he underwent surgical repair of a "sports hernia"......and injury which was not previously reported, but was said to have contributed to his poor play in 2016. He missed OTAs and just as he was preparing to return for TC, he underwent a knee scope. He wasn't activated from the PUP/active list until mid August and his appearance in late preseason was enough for the Steelers to say enough is enough.......this led to a trade with the Browns (Coates and a 2019 seventh-round pick from the Steelers in exchange for a 2018 sixth-round pick), after he dropped a critical pass in the EZ. Coates continued to drop all of his passes in his debut with the Browns. The next week, he sustained another hamstring tear. Following this, the Browns used Coates extremely infrequently the remainder of the season, with him being inactive in some games. As things turned out, the Browns had seen enough and waived him this past March.

Now we get glowing reports from the beginning of TC..............

It's football, people get hurt. I don't know many football players who have never had a injury before. The guy never missed a single game in his college career.
As I've posted before, I very much like Coutee, although I have some understandable reservations. In 38 games in college, he accumulated 159 receptions. He played through his injuries, mostly soft tissue injuries. Specifically, soft tissue injuries have a well-established natural history of becoming recurrent, cumulative and progressive...........with transition from college to the NFL, opportunity/risk for such injuries increase for obvious factors..........a concentrated pool of player speed and player mass. This does not even account for his transition from an "out route" receiver in college to an empirically high injury risk slot receiver in the NFL.

Sounds like Watt has missed a couple of days in a row for practice. Being cautious or is he having set backs?

J.J. Watt said he’ll be back for next season, but doesn’t know if he’ll be back on the field by OTAs. “I don’t know the answer to that one,” Watt said. “I’m just taking it one day at a time. That’s all I can do.”

Now, because of the type of incision that was utilized, that we know for sure that Watt underwent an open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of his fracture, and not an arthroscopic assisted internal fixation (ARIF), we have some additional facts to suggest his rate of return and time of return.

According to a very recent systematic (multi-study) review of this subject...........Return to sport following tibial plateau fractures: A systematic review..........published in the July 2017 volume of The World Journal of Orthopedics............he return rate to sport for the total cohort of these fractures was 70%. For the conservatively-managed fractures (not requiring surgery), the return rate was 100%. For the surgically-managed fractures, the return rate was 70%. For fractures managed with ORIF, the return rate was 60%. For fractures managed with ARIF, the return rate was 83%. For fractures managed with FRAME (external fixation) was 52%. The recorded return time was 6.9 mo (median), from a study reporting on ORIF.

It is now 10 months since his surgery...........over 3 months longer than the median return to play.

This is excellent information on Tibial Plateau fractures. And I couldn't remember exactly how far out JJ was, 10 months is a good amount of time. Wonder if this increases his 60% chance to come back

Mercilus sustained an "undisclosed injury" several days ago, and has not practiced since. Don't expect to see him out there Thursday. Of course, it's not considered serious.

We've heard virtually nothing about Watt during practices, except for PR statements. Don't be surprised if you don't see him out there Thursday either.
