NOTWITHSTANDING THE ABOVE INJURIES, WITH OT MCGARY AND G SCHWEITZER HAVING BEEN LIMITED IN PRACTICE ALL WEEK EXCEPT MCGARY TODAY IN WALK-THROUGH, THE FALCONS OLINE IS SOMETHING LESS THAN HEALTHY

ALTHOUGH DT GRADY JARRETT WAS A FULL GO DURING THE WALK-THROUGH PRACTICE, HE HAS BEEN LIMITED EARLIER THIS WEEK BECAUSE OF THIS HYPEREXTENDED ELBOW. THE WEEK BEFORE THAT, HE EITHER DID NOT PRACTICE OR WAS LIMITED DUE TO A TURF TOE (WHICH ACTUALLY OCCURRED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE WEEK 3 GAME). IN WEEKS 1 AND 2, HE HAD A SACK IN EACH GAME ALONG WITH A FORCED FUMBLE IN WEEK 1...........IN WEEKS 3 AND 4, HE HAD NONE...........COINCIDING WITH HIS INJURY STATUS. HOPEFULLY, FOR WATSON'S SAKE, JARRET WILL NOT BE HIS FULL SELF ON SUNDAY

Surprise! :kitten:

Aaron Wilson‏@AaronWilson_NFL 39m39 minutes ago
Texans wide receiver Kenny Stills is not expected to play against the Falcons due to his hamstring and ankle injuries was extremely limited in practice all week and was questionable on the injury report. Look for Keke Coutee to be more involved in the offense.

It's his hamstring that's keeping him out, as it should.

Doc everyone on The Longhorns’ OL wear braces on both knees. Do those help? Should the NFL do same? Thnx.
The only thing that these braces have been shown to be possible helpful in is in protecting from MCL injuries. Some college teams mandate their use for linemen on both side of the line............and sometimes only in practice. NFL teams don't because they add ~1-2 lbs of weight and restrict speed, strength, movement and are generally uncomfortable.........and players don't typically like the trade off. As far as I can remember, the only NFL team that ever mandated their use in linemen was the Bills per coach Chan Gailey back around 2010.........that policy was quickly ditched.

The protective evidence of these braces are very questionable and are mostly based on very old studies and very poorly structured newer studies.

Colleges Swear by Football Knee Braces. Not All Players and Experts Do.

They are itchy. They are awkward. They are cumbersome and largely unattractive and, when used over a long period of time, can develop what has been generously described as “a disgusting crust.” Also, they frequently smell as bad as an unventilated horse stall, and it is debatable whether they work as intended.

“Yeah, but other than that, we love them,” Ross Pierschbacher, an offensive lineman for Alabama’s football team, said on Saturday. (He was kidding.)

All of the Alabama linemen take part in what is known as prophylactic bracing. So do most of the linemen for Clemson, which will face Alabama here in the national championship game on Monday night. So do the big men at Louisiana State. And at Florida. And at Ohio State. Michigan made a rule about bracing just this past season. And, lest it seem like a top-tier-only phenomenon, the behemoths at North Texas do it, too.

a systematic review of all studies on whether knee braces prevent injury in 2008 and concluded that the issue was not so clear-cut. The methodology of the studies was flawed in many cases, the review found, and several studies even indicated that wearing braces might increase — not decrease — the risk of knee injury.

With a custom pair of braces costing upward of $1,000, the amount of money a program spends on outfitting all of its “high-risk” players — generally seen as linemen, some tight ends and some linebackers — is significant. Yet in a copycat sport, the lack of a medical consensus has not stopped the movement from spreading.

“There was actually a similar systematic review done more recently by a different group, and they came up with the same answer,” Pietrosimone said in an interview. “In some ways, it has become like taping ankles. Just about everyone wraps tape on players’ ankles prophylactically, and there is, in reality, very little evidence to support doing that.”

Such trends are not uncommon in sports: The use of kinesio tape increased exponentially after the 2012 Olympics, when many beach volleyball players were seen using it, and Michael Phelps helped popularize the ancient Chinese healing practice of cupping during the 2016 Rio Games.

Prophylactic bracing among college linemen, however, is hardly a fad. Danny Poole, who is Clemson’s director of sports medicine and has been at the university for more than three decades, estimated that he began endorsing the practice 15 years ago. (Clemson also requires players to have either tape or a brace on their ankles.) Poole said he was largely indifferent to skepticism that might appear in academic journals, preferring a more direct evaluation.

“I’m not a big, huge studies guy,” Poole said. “I like to hear from the players. And the first time you hear, ‘That brace saved me today,’ you know it’s doing something.”

In interviews with several players, coaches and trainers here for the national championship game, many cited instances when they had found a brace bent from a heavy blow and said they shuddered to think what might have happened to the knees inside those braces if there had been no protection. Yet four of the six players could also recall instances when they, or a teammate, had sustained a serious injury despite wearing a brace.

strongly encourage players to wear braces, but many college players cannot wait to reach the professional level so they can shed their team-imposed restraints.

Most notable among this group is Cam Robinson, Alabama’s top lineman, a juniorwho has been coy about whether he will leave the university and declare himself eligible for the N.F.L. draft this spring. Asked about knee braces on Saturday, Robinson remained careful not to tip his hand about his plans, but he was abundantly clear about a particular decision he had already made.

“Whenever it happens,” he said, “I won’t be wearing those things anymore.”

Thanks. Great info. Gray area it seems medically? I mean there are those that still want their old helmets too, lol. It would seem if the NFL mandated their use on the OL it could give a DE an unfair advantage so I guess they will just stay in the college ranks.

A braceless Cam Robinson tore his ACL last yr. Anybody know if he's wearing a brace this yr?

Is Robinson wearing one this yr?

I notice that Alabama/Oklahoma/UT OL all where braces and haven't suffered any ACL on their OL in the last few yrs. A personal observation not from a study.

Again, braces have never shown a hint of protecting against any knee injuries except MAYBE MCL injuries. Many if not most college linemen wear braces.

But, even more importantly to your question............college injury reporting is abyssmal..............many leave you with little information about the true nature of the injury.............."undisclosed," "knee," "out indefinitely," "out for the season"...........many times never to be given any additional information about again or ever to be heard from again..............ACLs are generously distributed throughout those classifications. Just think of how many players as opposed to NFL rosters make up all of these college teams when you contemplate your statement that there have been no ACL injuries on the OL of Alabama, Oklahoma, UT................

My son was saved from an ACL injury in High School and College by knee braces. Both braces broke during both incidents, but he knee was not damaged at all. For High School and College, I think braces should be MANDATORY for Offensive and Defensive Linemen.

I am glad your son avoided knee injury, but it is unlikely it protected him from an ACL. The reason being is that the knee braces are hinged to flex and and extend..........they are not made to take major stress of hyperextension or ACL tear. On the other hand, they are not made to move side to side.......the common mechanism of injury for an MCL tear. Knee braces, if they are going to break usually do so from side impact at the front support (ala Flaco) if anything allowing forward movement of the knee (encouraging an ACL) or side impact to the hinge mechanism..........protecting a player from severe MCL tear.

What can we expect from Tyreek Hill coming off the broken clavicle? What should we expect his season to look like? Does the clavicle affect a player like the lisfranc?

Justin Reid isn't on the report with his shoulder issue. That's strange. I thought it was a recurring separation issue. Is it possible that he's actually healed? What do you think CNd?

He's not healed. Once there is more than one subluxation/dislocation, the ligaments and labrum are damaged to some extent. Pain is not necessarily the limiting factor in the player being able to play or being placed on the Injury Report..........instability is. The more the number of these shoulder traumas, the more the chance that braces/harnesses cannot fully support/compensate for the amount of instability...........and the less functional the player becomes..........it's not IF.......it's WHEN.

So it's still an issue. Why isn't he on the injury report with it? Will he possibly have to have surgery to repair it?

Stills and QT allowed to rest but Reed and Omenihu with apparently more dangerous injuries continue to play.

idonno:
Technically Stills is not being "rested".......he is being limited (as he should be due to his hamstring) to essentially straight gingerly running with some gentle curved routes. QT is not being rested. Reed just needs to avoid using his shoulder as a battering ram and arm tackling when tackling in practice (and in games). Omenihu should be Ok by now. Since he played through most of the game in which he was injured in early, and then was limited the entire next week in practice and missed the next week's game but then returned healthy...............tells me he had a grade I MCL and essentially 1-2 weeks of "rest" which he had was sufficient.

My understanding is Tyreek Hill will play Sunday. He had a full practice today.

I heard on Sports Radio 610 on the Payne and Pendergast show this morning when they were talking to a sports beat writer from Kansas City that Tyreek Hill is questionable and most likely won't play. He may have been a full participant in practice, but that doesn't definitively mean that he will play. He is still having trouble with his shoulder. He was, after all, on the injury report for it. The Chiefs are playing it safe with him. They'd rather have him for ther long haul then risk him for one game.

THE CHIEFS ARE PLAYING AROUND WITH THE INJURY REPORT..............THEY ORIGINALLY (AS I POSTED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON) HAD HIM LISTED ON THEIR OFFICIAL INJURY REPORT AS "LIMITED PARTICIPATION"..............YESTERDAY EVENING, THEY MIRACULOUSLY CHANGED IT TO "FULL PARTICIPATION." THIS MORNING, THIS NFL.COM ARTICLE WAS JUST RELEASED.

'Optimism' Tyreek Hill will be cleared play vs. Texans

The Kansas City Chiefs receiver, who has been out since suffering a clavicle injury in Week 1, has been a limited participant in practice the past two days.

******************

At essentially a little over 4 weeks since the injury, a scan will only legitimately tell you the proper relocation of the sternoclavicular joint..............it will not insure the strength of that joint. If Hill sustains another severe impact to his shoulder and the clavicle again dislocates posteriorly but deeper into the underlying structures, he may not be as fortunate as he was the first time..........in fact, he could be facing a life-threatening situation. I'd hope the Chiefs in this case could make a more intelligent decision than Hill.

As per my previous post:

WR TYREEK HILL [SHOULDER]...........SUSTAINED EARLY SEPT............NOT REAL A SHOULDER INJURY............THE INJURY WAS CAUSED BY DIRECT TRAUMA TO THE SHOULDER BUT WAS ACTUALLY A RARE INJURY INVOLVING SUBLUXATION/DISLOCATION OF THE MEDIAL (INNER) BORDER OF THE CLAVICLE (COLLAR BONE) THAT ATTACHES TO THE STERNUM (BREAST PLATE).............SUCH A SUBLUXATION/DISLOCATION OF THE CLAVICLE CAN OCCUR OUTWARDLY /ANTERIOR OR INWARDLY/POSTERIOR (AS OCCURRED WITH HILL)...........INWARD DISLOCATION CAN BE LIFE-THREATENING IF IT RUPTURES/TEARS ANY OF THE UNDERLYING VITAL STRUCTURES, WHICH WAS NOT THE CASE WITH HILL..........INWARD DISLOCATION WAS MINIMAL AND DID NOT REQUIRE SURGERY FOR REDUCTION (IT WAS PERFORMED IN CLOSED FASHION).................

THESE INJURIES SHOULD REQUIRE AT LEAST 6 WEEKS BEFORE RETURN TO EVEN FULL PRACTICE ESPECIALLY ANY CONTACT AND THE JOINT WILL NOT BE CLOSE TO BE REGAINING FULL STRENGTH PRIOR TO 12 WEEKS............HOW THE CHIEFS TREAT HILL I CANNOT TELL YOU..................AS FAR AS THE LONG TERM PROGNOSIS BEYOND THIS SEASON, EXCEPT FOR POTENTIAL LATER PAINFUL ARTHRITIS AT THE STERNALCLAVICULAR JOINT, THIS INJURY SHOULD NOT AFFECT HILL'S PLAY
