Houston Texans: Cade Stover

What spot would I rather address? Anything excluding te. To include punter and the people who give players water during commercial breaks.

You never hand anyone 100% control of a team... but CJ has played a major role in turning this organization around.... he has earned the right to have a level of input.

IMO if the guy has the potential, ehy wouldn't you pursue a guy that has history and your QB wants if it doesnt cost you an arm and a leg?

We arent talking about a second or third string rookie that has to ride the bench. You're talking about a QB rookie that broke records and IF you want him to be the face of your organization, allow that face to have a voice. Doesn't mean you do everything that voice says.

I mean.....coach, gm, and front office have turned over a lot in twenty years. Caserio/Ryans regime isn't the Casserly/Capers regime.. I just find comparing any of this to Bennie frickin' Joppru to be really strange. They were in love with the Iowa tight end LaPorta last year and would've taken him at 33 if they hadn't done the Anderson trade. LaPorta is an absolute stud and would've been well worth the pick. That makes me think they have an idea when it comes to tight end and what they're looking for. Stover has been one of the better tight ends in the nation the past couple years, is very athletic, and has played with CJ for multiple seasons already. They get that in the 4th round. What is not to like??? I don't get it??? Schultz and Stover could be a really nice duo at the position.

Your justifying a te pick today on a move that was "speculated" a year ago for a franchise with a 20+ year history of missing the position? In a league with a history of missing? Say again?
 
Sorry. I get confused easy. Please type slower. I'm getting bashed for not trusting any te pick when in fact the focus should be on you to sale. You wanna know why I don't like the pick? Check our draft history. Check any team's draft history. 29 out of 32 teams will likely prove my point. 2 years from now we'll be wasting another pick on some shot in the dark replacement for this guy. And the same folks will be there telling me it's the next gronk.

Way to frame my argument in the worst way possible with zero charity or nuance whatsoever. You're not worth arguing with. You're obsessed with tying this current regime to every other regime the Texans have had. Stover is a very good te prospect who they were able to get in the 4th round and I'll be rooting like hell for him. The more weapons for Stroud...the better.

Sure. I just hope it's more so just positive input situation and not a "I'm the one who controls ****" situation, which is what my worry has been considering this guy's agent.

What does what the Texans have done in their past under previous regimes have to do with this one???????? You can't even use Jordan and Quitoriano because Slowik et al have a completely different set of eyes than those who came prior. What does Cade Stover have to do with guys drafted before him? I get it, bro. You have tight end derangement syndrome. It's going to be OKAY. Just have a slice of key lime pie like I am right now and the pain melts away.

I dont understand the joppru reference. He was pretty dang good at michigan and worthy of a 2nd round pick with his background.

Then severe groin injury his first season here, then reinjured it 2nd season, then tore his ACL. A bust yes in terms of drafting and production but Not like the guy was on the field

There are busts all the time..I separate it.


Travis Johnson was a bust because he couldn't play
. joppru was bust based on couldn't play based on injury


Anyway as far as this kid. Time will tell hopefully he is depth and pushes the starters and becomes one. Because injuries happen

Well that concern I get. I want a QB with input, I want an org that wants to keep him happy but I dont want to ever see anyone run unchecked in this organization again like black hole chin.

I just separate the regimes. I ultimately understand why you cannot. I also separate the players and have really liked Stover over his time in college. I watched him a lot when i was looking at Stroud's tape prior to the '23 draft. I also like the Ohio State wr Egbuka a good amount who will most likely be a first rounder in next year's draft. I could see them looking hard at him depending on what happens with Diggs/Collins and depending on where Egbuka falls.

Well the last good TE we had was OD..running Shanny scheme. Guess what scheme we run now lol.

At the end of the day, none of the TE’s we picked up in the past had the pedigree this kid has. He’s depth now, but by 2025 he’ll be the starter. Feel confident Schultz won’t be around after this year.

I trust his input on players a hell of a lot more than Jeff Bagwell's.. that's for sure.
 
I love debating picks, but you have to bring it. Give me some meat, some analysis. Why doesn’t he fit, what about him doesn’t work in the scheme, what specific player would have been a better fit, etc etc.

Give me something…anything besides look at some guy we drafted over 20 years ago who was always injured so we can never draft a guy at that position again. In fact, let’s just be the only team in the NFL with no TE on the roster. I don’t know a damn thing about the player but that’s my argument. Pathetic. Myopic. Ignorant. And that’s putting it extremely kindly, and with that, I’m done with that particular individual.

I don’t agree with that analysis. They just signed him to an extension. Stover will be TE #2 and give them flexibility in packages without as much of a tell. This TE room was not good after Schultz. No reason to dump Schultz anytime soon imho.

I see Brevin as #3, but really, I’d like to see him assume the Beck role as a FB/H-back type, with flexibility to cover the traditional TE role if injury or happenstance occurs. Quinton Torentino (when not directing) is the big bodied in-line TE who can help on the blocking side in short yardage. There’s your TE group folks. Good group. Two do it all guys, and two specialist types.

I agree with your Schultz take. The Slowik/Shanahn/Kubiak offensive tree places a high level of importance on the tight end. That’s why they added Schultz last offseason and gave him a raise to stay.

The cupboard was looking bare past Schultz however… so they got a guy in Stover who does a pretty dang good Schultz impression to upgrade the TE room. Great pick at a position of need.

I think the Bagwell thing is overplayed. Crane and some in the front office had loved Abreu since they finished 2nd in the blind bidding for him after he defected from Cuba several years ago. He was one of the key targets to fill 1b even before Click was fired. Most of his batted-ball metrics were still really good even though his homers had dropped to 15. The guy has just fallen off of a cliff due to his body breaking down on him. That's always a major risk when you sign older players. They were in win now mode and said screw it. Crane is the ultimate decision maker and deserves damn near all of the blame for what has happened with the organization. He has begun to meddle more and more post 2020 and the scandal. Maybe this season will wake him up.

I understand your trepidation over this selection. We don't have to recount the previous horrors that were the Texans TE picks since Owen Daniels left. But, I've got good news. Our long wait is over. Finally, a Houston Texans TE draft pick we can believe in! Look at the facts.

Both Daniels and Stover played in the Big 10.

Both Cade and Owen have 4 letter names. With two vowels and two consonants each.

Cade's college number was 8. Owen Daniels college number was 11. Transpose the 8 over the first 1 in 11 and you get 81. Owen Daniels number with the Texans.

Transpose 8 over the second 1 in 11 and you get 18. The number of years between the drafting of Daniels and Stover.

Add 81 + 8 + 11. It's 100, of course. Divide that 100 by 10 (the name of their college conference) and you get 10. A perfect score.

Everything lines up. The facts and numbers are undeniable. Cade Stover is the Chosen TE.

Yes, the team is making smart plans for the future instead of making desperate grabs.

Lassiter has a strong chance to start this year. If he needs more seasoning, he can come off the bench for a year.

Bullock likely sits and learns from Ward for a year before taking over as starter.

Fisher likely sits for a year but eventually takes over for Howard.

Stover provides a quality backup for Schultz and will eventually take over for him.

The 6th and 7th rounders have potential to be quality depth pieces and spot starters. Hill and Jordan, in particular, provide interesting versatility in addition to great ST potential.

This is smart team building.

He's a Daniels type TE except he's a better blocker.

A good blocking TE is really needed to help improve run game.

Owen was a 4th round rookie.. Lucky forgot about that. 😁. Productive potential game altering Tes usually flash their potential early on regardless of what round they're taken in. That's why it's such a hard position to draft. They are the ultimate tweener on the field.. A lot are moved to the position late or barely played football at all. But when you find a good one it opens up the entire offense and is well worth the wait.
