Houston Texans: Cade Stover

Really enjoyed watching Cade Stover play FB this past game. He’s a nasty blocker. The more guys like him we have, the more 200 yard rushing games there will be!

what did you think of his analysis?

I'm watching around the 3:52 mark & he's talking about the RT missing a block. Do you think he missed his block? How about Scruggs, did he miss his block?

It’s an interesting question, by moving to the 2nd level and occupying the next man through the hole, the RT leaves one man over at the line.

It looks as if it’s Mixon’s responsibility to make that one man miss with his cut and then has space to run into on the second level, allowing him to run all the way up to the safety. If Howard makes the block he is stated to have ‘missed’ at the line, the LB comes in and meets Mixon at or near the line to give only a short gain.

yeah.

I'm not pretending to know, just trying to reconcile what I saw with what I've been told about zone blocking. Our blockers aren't picking out a man to block, they're looking at a spot, getting to that spot & blocking the guy that "crosses his face."

That guy Tytus "missed" is lined up on Tytus, but at the snap he moves to Howard's right where Howard moves to the left.

By contrast the guy lined up on Scruggs left crosses Scruggs that guy should have been blocked by Scruggs. I'm not picking on Scruggs just using him as an example since you can see them in the same frame.

There is another play later where Tytus tries to engage a LB at the 2nd level then gets juked... So I see problems with Tytus, just not there at 3:52 on that block.

Yeah, i’m not going to pretend to know OL assignments on a given play. Especially in the ZBS. There was plenty to pick apart about Tytus week 1. I moreso posted the video to highlight Cade Stover’s week 1 usage as a run blocking weapon at the FB position.

Very excited about how the team will use him going forward.

I was surprised Brooks didn’t get any burn at FB. They put Dalton in as FB several times. Interesting, hmmm I wonder why?

I saw somewhere that all 15 of Stover’s snaps were running plays, I’m sure I recall seeing Brevin Jordan lining up at FB, also.

I can understand them having the rookie prepared to play well in a very limited role and giving other parts of the offense to more experienced players. Obviously from what we’ve seen of Schultz he isn’t as willing of a blocker as Cade is, but maybe he has more versatility to do other things from the same personnel group.

I could see the offense having very different identities week to week.

Completely unrelated but CJ averaged just 1.6 air yards to Diggs whilst they sent Collins and Tank deep a fair amount. There is a lot of chance for different players to feature in different ways each week. And for Brooks to see the field as full back, and indeed for Stover to be in for more of the playbook. Won’t get away with signalling that you will only run with him on the field for long.

More experience and harder for the defense to make calls and put personnel

When Brooks comes out on the field with another RB it's pretty obvious Brooks is lining up at FB and you can then load the box or do whatever you want on defense because you know where the offensive pieces will be.

If Schultz comes onto the field the opposition has no idea where he'll be lining up. There's nothing being tipped and it makes it harder to matchup for the defense. Do you put out your nickle formation, your base, do you load the box, do you drop coverages?

There was a guy on YouTube showing a bunch of Stovers reps. It wasn’t all of them…so take with a grain of salt, but the ones he did show…just wow. Stover was a stud. I thought he was in real time, but there is so much going on it’s sometimes hard to iso on a lead blocker, but man Stover was a man among boys. He took on the DE multiple times and more then held his own. And he came with a physical presence that was close to amazing for a guy that the scouts said needed a lot of work on blocking and was more of a pass catcher,

Let me assure those scouts - they are 100% wrong. Now with Schultz likely out, it’s time to see what he can do in the passing game, and make him a well rounded chess piece. He has a chance to be special guys.

I think it was said that Schultz will likely play on Sunday. Despite CnD not liking it.
