I think the line play has played into this as well. If Carr was more creative/instinctive/experienced it might not show the lines weaknesses as much, but the fact is he's still a 3rd year guy thats never had a good, consistent line in front of him.

Of course, Drew Brees was in an even more dismal situation last season, so these guys can turn it around. It would be nice if the Chargers would clone Ladainian for us. A strong, consistent, breakaway threat running game would do amazing things for this offense. I've liked Davis and he's looked better the past few games (of course, he's like a magnet in this offense) but if the right player is there, I think we should go for him.
 
I don't want to pick apart Carr's game here, but the arguments that we are having here about Carr is not bringing in a veteran to challenge him but is he going to be a mediocore, good or very good QB. All our arguments assume he is an NFL quality QB. The same can't be said for Harrington.
 
wow not that long ago (beginning of season, Texans vs Lions as a matter of fact) the future seemed bright for Harrington & the Lions, they were headed in the right direction, then lost IT whatever IT is. The Texans on ther other hand seemed to oscillate back & forth from a consistant, prepared & focused winning team to a inconsistant, penalty plaqued, underachieving losing team. Is it fair to blame both teams lack of consistant exacution on the QB? Probably not. Both Carr & Harrington were considered to be cream of the crop prospects when drafted, Carr has more raw skills, a quicker release, better footwork & speed. But exactly what they are knocking Harrington for (his intangibles) are his strengths, which include leadership, competitivness and faith.

the Lions have no one to blame but themselves for selecting Joey as the 3rd pick in 2002. he could very well be a winning QB in the right system without such unrealistic expectations in the NFL, now it seems its just not going to be in Detorit :bag: .
 
just the fact they having this conversation is not good for Joey. You could make an arguemnt that his total package of skill players maybe better than Carrs even though he has not had Rogers for any length of on field time. He also has had decent protection from him O-line. For those who are claiming that 3 years is not enough time to judge, Harrington maybe another of those guys who three years is all you get.

even those of us who don't know if Carr is a consistent top 10 QB don't have many questions about his intagibles/leadership skills. Even though the Texans declared Carr over Harrington pretty early, i do remember plenty of guys who thought that that was a mistake. Does not look so now.
 
One huge reason folks may feel more comfortable judging Harrington this early is that his jersey has remained very clean through his three years. Harrington has only been sacked 50 times in 3 years v. 140 times in 3 years for Carr.
 
I still contend that Harrington will eventually pan out and become a legitimate NFL QB. I did not say he'd be trying to write a Hall of Fame speech in the future so please take that into account.

Look at Carr and Harrington and you see two guys who are having to overcome a different set of "complications" on their way to being what people expected them to be when they were drafted.

In Carr's case I think it's easy to see "the problem". He suffers from a consistent lack of protection and that's affected his game. On the plus side he's been in the same system for all three years he's spent in the league. Consistency is huge in developing a QB (unless it's consistently getting sacked). Carr clearly is not the same player when you can smack the snot out of him and that's going to be the way people attack the Texans until they can protect him.

Harrington probably should have sat his first season (hindsight being so easy) and changing coaches/systems once already hasn't helped him at all. If the Lions stink again next year and this leads to another regime change then Joey's going to get even worse. He turned out to be the guy who needed to grow some more before getting the reigns and he isn't getting that opportunity in Detroit.

If the Lions get stupid and cut him he's going to go somewhere else, learn the system behind someone else, and make the Lions look like *****s all over again.
 
I agree. Harrington needs to be in the same system for a few years before he can be judged.

They need to give him some more time.
 
On a national board that I read and post on regularly, the Lion fans accuse Harrington of the same dump down thing that we do Carr. About the only difference is that if he feels the slightest pressure he dumps down. They think that he does not have the toughness to stand in there or the athletic ability to sidestep/escape so he throws short prematurely and falsely keeps his sack totals down.

Harrington has been in pretty much the same system. Joey's 1st head coach, Marty Mornhinweg, was Mariucci's offensive coordinator from '97 - '00 prior to coming to Detroit. The next 2 years, Harrington's been with Mooch. This just looks like a situation where both parties would be better off without each other.
 
On Franchise Mode, I chose to pick up the AZ Cardinals from purgatory, and with the Lions cutting Harrington after "my first year in franchise mode", I picked up Harrington and teamed him with Boldin and Fitz. Now he is a having a Drew Brees like revival. We also beat the Texans @ Reliant Stadium in my fictional franchise mode.
 
on Franchise mode in Madden i have made Rohan Davey a multiple probowler, and had an MVP year with Doug Flutie.

It really means nothing. just who you choose to get the majority of the snaps and if you win the games and they play well in those games.
 
ESPN report on Harrington.

Kind of an interesting report out of Detroit. You kind of wonder if there is some fire where there is smoke. Like so many things today, let it happen and then comment. Harrington has to wonder what the truth really is in a case like this, particularly in light of what happened at the games........
 
Joey Harrington did great at the University of Oregon where he had Jeff Tedford as a coach. The Lions front office might want to entice Tedford to be the OC for their team, but I seriously doubt that Jeff would take the job.
