Hmm.. compensatory picks

So.. if we dont resign Payne.. or Bradford.. what kind of compensatory picks do you think they will get us?

Compensatory draft picks are awarded by the league based on the net loss of free agents during the free agent period. The picks are usually round 4-7 and a team can receive a maximum of four.

Compensatory picks are received from the signing team when someone signs away one of your RFAs that you have already tendered.

If Payne and Bradford are not re-signed and that loss is not offset by new free agent signings, then the NFL top secret formula kicks in and determines what draft picks the Texans will get in return.

Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.

if your concern is 2005 then nothing. The 2005 is based on the links that AJ has posted. The Texans would have to lose more free agents than they signed in 2005. Then in 2006 the way too difficult formula for would apply for Payne and Bradford.

So to answer your question, yes the Texans could receive compensatory picks if they lose guys like Payne, Banks, Simmons, or Bradford. They would receive the picks (or picks) at the bottom of rounds 3-7 in 2006. But, if the Texans sign FA's this offseason that would be deemed greater than the guys they lost by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors, then no compensatory picks.

I doubt the Texans will receive compensatory picks this season because they signed Robaire Smith, Todd Wade, & Mark Bruener and only lost Steve Foley & Greg Randall (not sure if he counts). The Texans could receive compensation in this years draft if teams sign tendered RFAs during the FA period and the Texans do not match the offer. Then the signing team would owe the Texans a draft choice based on the amount the Texans tendered. If the Texans offer a RFA the minimum tender, they would receive a draft choice based on the round the RFA was drafted. There are two higher tenders where the signing team would owe either a 1st round pick, or a 1st & a 3rd. Here are the guys I believe will be RFAs if not re-signed by the Texans prior to the start of the FA period (March 2nd), and the compensation that would be due if given the minimum tender.

Jonathan Wells (4th Round)
Petey Faggins (5th Round)
Jarrod Baxter (5th Round)
Milford Brown (6th Round)
Matt Murphy (7th Round)
Quincy Monk (7th Round)
Troy Evans (undrafted, no compensation)

Faggins would be the key guy for the Texans to re-sign. Petey would be very attractive to a team with only a 5th round pick as compensation. And the Texans probably won't offer Faggins a tender (around $1.5 million) which would require a 1st round pick.

nevermind lol

I think for 2005 Greg Comella was technically our FA as was Steve Martin, so that should put us a 3 and 3. Your idea about Greg randall is correct as he was signed and release. Once release even if resigned by another team the guy no longer is a help to us.

hell.. in that case.. we better get something for steve foley damn it :)

thanks for all the info guys.. wasnt aware it was that indepth.
