Hard Knocks: Houston Texans 2015

I thought the "accuracy" issue with Mallett was on deep balls which he did not attempt in this game?

His issue with the long balls was supposed to be his "touch", right? Hoyer's supposed to have better touch on his deep balls, probably a more catchable ball, while Mallett puts it on more of a rope? The accuracy stuff was with the shorter routes, I thought.

He had a bit of a feature part on Hard Knocks episode 2 and it was very critical of him, highlighting dropped passes.

Great episode, much better than last week. I like the focus on the training camp practices and game situations. Last week had a lot of useless fluff that I really don't care about.

Anyone know why they had the safety and CB double-teaming that one SF receiver (I think it was Wright)? Seemed like overkill to me.
In preseason, it's as likely to be about practicing communication as the opponent.

I actually thought the play was intentionally sent in to see if Ryan Mallett would have the smarts to change it fast on the go. Tom Brady does it all the time in New England. A preseason game you can afford to challenge your players mentally as well. Another funny part was the penalty called on Mallett pre-snap, and O'Brien shouted out that only two quarterbacks can do that. I assume he was referring to Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.
I thought the call was in reaction to the defense because no one was lining up in the middle. I think the distance might have been further than initially thought leading it to be considered a bad call by OB. But I'm sure they worked out the details off camera.

It's the sort of thing that Brady does when it's close enough. Like you said, I think they (Godsey + Mallett) misjudged how far he had to go.

Getting these sorts of bumps worked out in preseason is great, as long as they do get worked out.

When I saw that happen in the game, I just closed my eyes and hoped that he (Mallett) hadn't taken it upon himself to do that thinking he was being tricksy and sly. That's the sort of thing that could lose the QB battle.

That was my initial thought when I saw it live. Very relieved to see that's not the way it went down.

If it had worked, it would be considered brilliant tactics and not a mistake to be worked out. Even if the call was based on bad information.

A couple more thoughts on the episode:

Kind of sad to see AJ's pic taken down and replaced with Hopkins. Once AJ does retire, we have to make amends. There is no way around it.

Speaking of Hopkins, the whole small dog bag thing was a bit...yeah. More power to him. As long as he's catching passes and scoring TDs I don't care what he does off the field; European bad included.

My only problem with the Man Bag is that it insinuates being European makes it OK. If men want to carry purses, then just get over the history and admit it is a PURSE that you're MAN ENOUGH to carry.

Just call it "active man's gear like Indian Jones"

Works for me. I harken back to the days when saddle bags and powder horns were used for such purposes, so I never understood the feminization of the tools used to carry things in an efficient manner. I'm personally a fan of the cargo pants and think it should be incorporated into all manner of clothing. Of course, I also like pockets on shirts and pocket protectors too.

I was really surprised by how poorly Strong has been playing. I never read about that in the camp reports. It's been all rainbows and unicorns.

Having never watched Hard Knocks before this season I don't really know how good they are about creating story lines vs reporting story lines but my gut tells me that he (or pretty much any of the players they focus on) is neither doing as poorly nor as well as we're being shown. It looked to me like they spun that like he was really struggling in camp and then scored a touchdown and had a break through moment during the game just in a nick of time. It feels contrived to me.

They're almost all going to have bad days and good days. Hard Knocks is just there to fit them into an entertaining narrative for ratings.

The guy from NFL films mentioned this on the radio yesterday. They have 350 hours of film and sometimes they find it difficult to find good clips they can piece together to make a good story.

He said most of the stuff was training camp stuff that would be boring to the general audience. We in Houston might want to see it, but the rest of the nation might not want to.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if Hopkins was serious about the whole Euro man-purse and tiny doggy thing ot not? If he was, it was kinda... I didn't really want to know that about him.

Why Strong is neither exceptionally fast or quick in and out of his breaks. He was able to be physically dominant in college. He cant do that in the NFL where DB's where big boy pants. What has really surprised me is how poor his hands have been in TC.

He has some ability and hopefully his game will improve. But as of right now his game isn't translating well. The best thing for Strong would be to get a minor injury, go on IR and learn how to become a professional WR.

Loved the episode.

I liked the Charles James bit. I also found it interesting that blue was planning dance moves before getting into the end zone. Lesson learned I hope.

I like seeing how OB talks to jj watt. Challenges him during practice. Liked seeing clowney. I liked seeing OB tell mallet that if he gets a fucked up call to not just run it like a mindless drone.

I like seeing the player interactions during practice and games.

I liked the episode, too. You brought up a lot of things that I would mention. My son got a kick out of seeing J.J. get challenged by O'Brien. I told him even superstar players are still just players at the end of the day. They have bosses, too, and I think J.J.'s positive attitude about it is a great example for young athletes.

I'd love to hang out for breakfast at Wilfork's house when J.J. shows up. Sounds like Vince's wife knows how to cook up a mean breakfast, and I could listen to those two guys chat all day.

That seems odd. You would think that NFL films (and HBO in particular) would want to show stuff that would be interesting to the general audience, and not care too much what Houston would want to see.

But there has to be someone higher up in the production department that's got some kind of a weird foot fetish. I could do without watching Wilfork scraping his feet. Maybe it was the players sitting around watching him do it was the story, but jeez.

350 hours a week of filming, and that was the best they could do? I get the feeling a lot of it ends up on O'Brien's cutting room floor. Just going from past Hard Knocks, where other teams learned the featured team's tendencies, I've been keeping an eye out for that sort of thing, and so far, I haven't seen anything so far that other teams can take advantage of. So far at least.

Good. I hope they keep it that way. :)

In previous seasons, there always seemed to be a lot more of the coaches talking together in their offices, a lot more of guys making fun of each other in their positional meetings, a lot more of guys talking about guys on other teams.

What OB said about looking up at the camera, asking if someone was recording, and then walking out if they said "yes", I think that had more than a couple of grains of truth to it. I think the lack of storylines here partially comes from OB's attempt to control information flow.

I would not be surprised if there is a room at NRG that coaches and GM go to for the real talks. O'Brien is going along with this to make his boss happy, but between his editorial control and lack of desire to say much in front of the camera in his own office, it is clear that he's only tolerating all of it.

And I really liked that O'Brien did not censor himself. F'ck yeah. :thumbup

Scraping feet, man purses and he-man cussing from "warrior" football players and MB posters. Lord please let the next three weeks pass quickly. Amen

What I'm enjoying the most about Hard Knocks, is that this season, when we watch the preseason games, on Tuesday, we see a Hard Knocks perspective on those games. For instance, "the 7 attempts to get it in the end zone", and Mallet's attempted sneak on 3rd and 6.

When we watch the Broncos game, we're gonna be watching, almost subconsciously, for Hard Knocks moments, and see if they make it on the show.

If anything, after everything is said and done, it just makes the preseason just a little bit less boring.

I was really hoping to see Kourtnei Brown's sacks and Ankrah's safety.

Yes, all the Spaniards pointed at me and laughed until I got one.

It's quite stylish, actually. Prada.

Mine is big enough to hold my laptop. It's how I justify "satchel".

But damned if you don't have to carry an umbrella and jacket everywhere you go in this country. Even in summer.

3rd and 4.

Otherwise agree with your post.

In the video O'Brien says 3rd and 3 doesn't he?

I have been guilty of this my whole career because I always have a laptop and other computer related stuff in my bag. But it has a handle like a briefcase, as well as backpack straps, and a single strap like a purse so I had all three options. I hate lap dogs so there would never be one of those in my bag. Anyone got any photos of Hopkins in college because he seems to be getting his fashion cue's from Foster who is quirky for lack of a better term.

Yeah but the commentator during the game said 4 and that's what nfl.com has.

I've always had a soft leather briefcase with a shoulder strap. Lot more convenient than a normal one although a few people have called it a man purse.

I think that is DeAndre's style.

I'd love for the NFL and HBO to just say "forget the current format" and just do another Hard Knocks featuring the Houston Texans next year as well. We're the hottest team in the league. The entire country loves us. Let's do it again!

They did the Jets two years in a row. So it's not out of the realm of possibility.

OB is not Rex Ryan, though, and doing HK two years in a row could push him to a tri-state killing spree.

The entire country loves JJ Watt (All species of the female origin) anyways, big difference.

Only the Cowboys and the Bengals have been on HK twice, not in consecutive years. After the Jets did HK in 2010, we had the lock out before the 2011 season, so no team was on Hard Knocks, but they did a review of prior seasons special.

Wow. Why did I remember the Jets being on in consecutive years? Bizarre. My bad.

You can't make it walk and you can't board it. It's a show dog. It gets upset.

I have an aunt and uncle who showed miniature schnauzers for 20 years (60s-70s). Their dogs weren't primadonnas.

Weird combination of hobbies - desert motorcycle racing and showing schnauzers. The dogs went with them to the desert.
