GS27 2017 Texans Mock - V1

gs27

Veteran
1st mock here on TexansTalk.

Round 1: Adoree Jackson - CB - USC - 5'-11", 185 lbs

Electric special teams player and playmaker at corner. Struggles with route recognition and press coverage which is why he will fall out of the top 15 picks. He can run with any receiver and is a threat to make a play on any ball thrown his way. Jackson can be a shut down man coverage corner against the trend of smaller speedy receivers entering the league.

Round 2: Billy Price - OG - Ohio State - 6'-4", 315 lbs

Current projections have Price lasting till the later part of round 2 or early round 3. IMO Price has been the only exceptional lineman for the Buckeyes, even outplaying highly touted Pat Efflein. Price is extremely powerfull and a fundamental technician. Price is the best guard I have seen coming out since Kevin Zeitler, whom he should draw many comparisons to.

Round 3: Chris Wormley - DT/DE - Michigan - 6'-4", 303 lbs

Rare ability to both split gaps or move the line of scrimmage. Prototypical 3-4 DE would allow Clowney to move back to OLB. 18 career sacks, 33 career TFL. Captain and recipient of many character, effort and academic recognitions at Michigan.

Round 4: Adam Bisnowaty - OT - Pittsburgh - 6'-6", 305 lbs

Many projections are of Bisnowaty lasting till late on day 3 or even being undrafted, but I'm not buying it. Bisnowaty is my favorite tackle in the draft so I will plug in him here anticipating Walterfootball.com and others are getting misinformation. Bisnowaty has a strong punch, rarely makes a mistake, and has very light feet. I am not impressed with any of the tackles projected to go in the 1st 3 rounds, but if Bisnowaty moves up through the process I will likely adjust to mock him where required, since OT is our greatest need IMO.

Round 5: Anthony Walker - ILB - Northwestern - 6'-1", 235 lbs

Poor mans Luke Kuechly. Doesn't have Kuechly's length but like Kuechly, Walker has a history playing defensive back and has filled out the stat sheet at Northwestern. 269 tackles, 38 TFLs, 7.5 sacks and 4 Ints in his 3 seasons. Pat Fitzgerald has called Walker the best linebacker that he has been around, including himself! At the very least, Walker would be a great special teamer and 3rd down backer for the Texans.

Round 6: Quin Blanding - SS/FS - Virginia - 6'-2", 215 lbs

Great instincts, fundamental tackler, decent ball skills, 358 tackles in 3 years

Round 7: Elijah Hood - RB - North Carolina - 6'-0", 220 lbs

Power back with great speed but limited elusiveness. High character, former eagle scout.

Let the newbie have it :roast:

Hey GS, I like every player you have listed. I usually do .... but .... in our current situation, I think it would be most beneficial to focus on needs. Prioritizing our selections based on team weaknesses, as glaring as they are, makes sense to me. William of Ockham believed that "the simpler answer was usually the better one". My IQ steers me in that direction. Facts to consider .... 1) we rank very close to last in the league in offense .... 2) we are very close to, if not in - the top 10 in defense .... and this has been achieved, without the services of the man who is the very heart of this team, and may go down as the most valuable defensive player .... ever ! Last season, despite the fact we had one of the top 4 wide receivers in the NFL, followed by Shorts, Strong and Mumphrey, (the last two, still wet behind the ears), we spent 3 of our first 4 picks on wide receivers, each with concerns !! Pardon me. I sometimes wonder if I might possibly have concerns with their draft philosophy ....surely not ! The more I study your picks, the more I like them. I would replace Adoree Jackson, (as much as I adore him), with Ryan Ramczyk. We literally don't have a right tackle. At 6'6'' and 315, extremely athletic, strong, and smart - per his fellow linemen, I think he and Billy Price, (stronger than 9 yards of spring onions), would make a right side to be proud of !! Of course, I would expect to see Ramczyk slide to the left, when Duane retires. I love Bisnowaty at #4. He and Mancz for depth, would be outstanding. I might get a little weak in the knees if Conor McDermott blew up the combine. I fear that Elijah Hood will go around 4th or 5th round. However, James Conner might still be there, and he's got a heart as big as JJ ! I love watching North Carolina. Trubisky may go as early as #1. Two other Tarheels I really like are Jon Heck - an aggressive right tackle who plays full out on every snap, and Barry Switzer, natural and highly productive slot receiver in the mold of Welker. I must stop. Sorry for the rambling. God, I love the draft !

Well done!

Solid picks through & through addressing Texan needs.

Really prefer going with a top FS prospect over another (Kevin Johnson) speedster CB. Marcus Williams would be #1 rated if available followed by Budda Baker. Wouldn't be having this conversation if Texans took Marcus Peters who slipped two spots after Texans took Kevin, but stable of corner pretty decent, safety position more dire need & MW or BB would be day one starter.

Billy Price would be a great pick. Probably win RG starting spot in rotation.

If you want Wormley as much as I do, need to take him with that 2nd pick. He'll be off the board by 3rd rd. Wanted a 3 tech DE/DT last year didn't get one then Watt out. Not a good combo but here we are, need my elevate this pick.

Great 4th rd. selection. Someone to groom as swing then starter for Brown retirement/injury's.

Walker is undersized but that's what you get later rounds, big thing is his motor & football IQ. Like pick.

Can choose between your RB here or another CB last two rounds. BPA.
