Game 7...For The Division Lead...Jacksonville Jaguars!

What it Means to go without Shareece Wright

The Texans cornerback group is a mess and now with Wright planning to miss Sunday’s game, this is the 4th cornerback this season who will miss at least one game. Aaron Colvin (ankle) has been out since injuring his left ankle in overtime against the Indianapolis Colts while Kevin Johnson (concussion) and Kayvon Webster (quad) are both on the injured reserve.

Now, with Wright’s injury, the Texans will use their most experienced tandem with Johnathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson at cornerback while Tyrann Mathieu and Justin Reid will take over the safety spots. That leaves veterans Johnson Bademosi and Mike Tyson to possibly fill in for defensive packages when the Jaguars want to put 3+ wide receivers on the field.

What Having Ryan Griffin Unavailable Means

The Texans most experienced tight end’s absence is a bigger blow than most will realize. Without Ryan Griffin on the field, the Texans will get more athletic, with rookies Jordan Thomas and Jordan Akins receiving most of the snaps at the position, but the run game could be an even bigger issue now. The team will more than likely want to keep their tight ends inline to give them a chance to help out blocking in the run game but the bigger problem is that Thomas has been inconsistent run-blocking and Akins is not asked to do that blocking role.

In situations like this when the Texans have injuries at the tight end position, coach Bill O’Brien has used offensive lineman (tackle eligibles) to take over those spots to help pass protect and in the run game. That means Martinas Rankin or David Sharpe could be called on to help on Sunday at that spot.

What it Could Mean without Zach Fulton

The Texans have had nice returns with free agent offensive guards Senio Kelemete and Zach Fulton and the possibility of Fulton missing the game on Sunday is not optimal. Fulton has played every snap at right guard this season and has been solid in all facets of his game. Last week against the Buffalo Bills, it was clear Fulton’s ankle was not right as he gave up some pressures and couldn’t get the push he usually does at the line of scrimmage.

If Fulton misses on Sunday, expect Greg Mancz to be the right guard, the 6th different offensive line combination of the season for the team.

In a game where protecting Deshaun Watson is at a premium, no Fulton and the absence of Griffin does not come at the best time for the Texans.

One thing I can't agree with is that Ryan Griffin doesn't offer much in the role of a run blocker........and he has been responsible for Watson getting killed in too many plays that he wa supposedly pass blocking.

IIRC Mancz at guard last season didn't look so good. Hope this works. Some think Rankin should play inside. I'm interested in seeing if that's correct. Hopefully Keke and our RBs chew up ground over the middle. Hope Hyde doesn't go nuts in his first game for J'ville. Maybe Rankin gets time as tackle eligible or super tackle. We get two TDs from TOs and Watson does not have any TOs. Ok I'll stop now.

corrected 'yes' to TDs.

This would be the perfect opportunity to bump Kelemete over to RG and let the OJT begin for Rankin as the new and future LG. I would give this 4 games with Rankin at LG and Fulton at RG.....if Martin is still not playing up to par, then I'd put Mancz in and see if he can re-capture his 2016 performance with better OG's in place. That could go a long way towards setting the table for the interior of this OL going into 2019. If the team can at least accomplish finding answers for the interior of the OL, it would also help the rookie OT's in progressing much quicker. It would be magical if O'Brien could unclench his head from his arse and start the Jordan's the rest of the way so they also have a better chance at becoming assets in 2019.

O'Brien and Gaine need to realize the time is now for this team to start setting its chess pieces for 2019.

Mancz has not been what he was expected to be because of the knee injury that got him on IR Nov 2016. Since then, his performance has noticeably been lacking. This year, they felt that Martin could come back strong from his 2nd high ankle sprain/fracture surgery. As would be expected, he has not. Mancz's short 1 year contract extension in April was to give us some reserve on the OL that was difficult to otherwise accomplish this year. They were hoping for him to return to 2016 pre-injury status. However, his performance through the offseason was not much more promising than that of 2017. If the Texans after preseason believed that Mancz was anything but a stop gap, he would have been allotted a greater role in the OL by now.

If you're referring to Sunday's game against the Texans, I don't see a chance in H$ll with the short turn around time from reporting to the Jags to the game Sunday that Hyde will be playing. Cross that off of your list of concerns.

So let me get this, the Texans OL/CB's are going to be worse than normal? I didn't think that would be possible. God I hope Watson can come out of this season with no career altering injuries.

From the Chronicle......John McClain:

Texans' keys to victory

1. The pass protectors have to do a better job of keeping the Jaguars' pass rushers away from quarterback Deshaun Watson.

2. Watson has thrown at least one interception in a league-high eight consecutive games. It's time for the streak to end.

3. The defense has to shut down the run and get after quarterback Blake Bortles, forcing him into another poor performance.

Jaguars' keys to victory

1. Find ways to use the running game to keep Blake Bortles out of obvious passing situations that put more pressure on him.

2. Give Bortles time to throw like he had last season when he threw four touchdown passes against the Texans with no interceptions.

3. Shut down the Texans' running backs, get shots on Deshaun Watson when he takes off and runs, force him to pass and tee off on him.

BoB doesn't scheme them to victory , they have won despite him.

Yet in some thread I think it was Pat Starr that said BOB schemed up a RZ play that would've been a TD if Thomas wouldn't have run the wrong route putting 2 players in the same area.

With that said, BOB isn't near as good as Kubiak at scheming guys ope. Kubiak was great at that. He learned from the master. Walsh

We were spoiled by that offense …. with a noodle armed club footed QB. Imagine that offense with a quality QB ?!

I would definitely be ok with this as Fulton just ruled out
Houston Texans C/G Zach Fulton will not travel with the team to Jacksonville and has been downgraded to OUT for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars.

If your inner three can do their jobs, you can help the OTs.

yeah I'm thinking Jags wasted a 5th round pick which helps Texans

I can't handle losing to the jags, the flip side is winning and keeping Obrien. My brain is conflicted. I just hope the ball can start to come out quicker and Obrien can eventually get a glass stomach so he can coach with his head up his ass. Go Texans!

Most likely outcome. Seems like a given to me.

I think it will come closer to resembling wk 1 last year than the vikings game

Lots of crow to be served today... I'll take my helping now

Gotta hope that somehow Miller/Blue have a career day and Bortles out Bortles his normal

Thankfully he did just that... And Miller did come up with a big game

Hopkins did the same thing against the Bills in a play that lead to a strip sack. He misread the defense as zone, and sat down in the flat where Thomas was running his route, and would've been open except Hopkins and his guy were there. Watson didn't have enough time to find another receiver before the pressure got home
