Free Agent Signings

Redskins sign David Patten
LINK

Ashburn, VA (Sports Network) - The Washington Redskins took a step towards shoring up their unsettled receiving corps Thursday, as the club signed free- agent David Patten. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Patten spent the last four seasons with the world champion New England Patriots and was a key part of the club's three Super Bowl wins during that span. The eight-year veteran started 11 of New England's 16 games in 2004 and hauled in 44 passes for 800 yards and a career-best seven touchdowns.

The 30-year-old Patten set personal-bests with 61 catches and 824 yards for the Patriots in 2002 and had 51 receptions for 749 yards the previous season.

New England Acquires CB Starks From Arizona

March 3, 2005

By SportsTicker

TEMPE, Arizona (Ticker) - The New England Patriots bolstered their depleted cornerback corps Thursday when the two-time defending Super Bowl champions acquired Duane Starks from the Arizona Cardinals for a 2005 third-round pick.

The 30-year-old Starks was plagued by injuries after signing a free-agent contract with the Cardinals prior to the 2002 season. He was limited to 10 games in 2002 and tore his ACL in a 2003 preseason game, an injury that forced him to miss the entire campaign.

Last season, Starks had 58 tackles and three interceptions in 15 games, including eight starts.

Hit by several injuries at the cornerback position during their title run in 2004, the Patriots were forced to start several untested players. They recently waived Pro Bowler Ty Law, who missed the last three months of the season after breaking his foot at Pittsburgh on October 31.

As part of the trade, the teams also swapped fifth-round picks.

I guess Trotter learned the hard way (Redskins) that he is best suited for the Eagle's system. I think he made a smart move.

Well that was an upgrade for the Browns, Romeo seems to be taking that team in the right direction so far...

not sure if reported, saw kelly holcomb signed with buffalo, at 4 yr./6.5 mil. odd, i thought they were going to give jp losman the starting job.

from espn.com:

The Cleveland Browns will have to look elsewhere for a starting quarterback. The Buffalo Bills, on the other hand, now have an experienced backup passer capable of competing for the starting job.

The Bills on Friday evening reached a contract agreement with unrestricted free agent Kelly Holcomb, who rebuffed persistent attempts by the Browns to retain him, and possibly give him the starting job. Holcomb, 31, will sign a four-year, $6.6 million contract that includes a $2 million signing bonus.

"LAKE FOREST, Ill. (March 7, 2005) -- The Chicago Bears signed right tackle Fred Miller, agreeing to a five-year deal with the 32-year-old veteran who hasn't missed a start since 1998.

The 6-foot-7, 320-pound Miller was a cut by the Tennessee Titans last month so he wouldn't count $9.32 million against the cap in 2005.

The signing of Miller will allow the Bears to move John Tait from right tackle to left tackle."

Their '05 line. Talk about a star studded line.

LT John Tait
LG Ruben Brown
C Olin Kreutz
RG Rex Tucker
RT Fred Miller

DC, not being a smart mouth here, but does this have anything to do with the Texans? Wasn't sure if there was some connection here?

NEVERMIND DC. . . I JUST REALIZED I WASN'T IN THE BULL PEN....I THOUGHT I WAS!

Star studded?

Tait - A good RT who struggled at LT with KC.
Brown - One time pro bowl guard who's living on his rep.
Kreutz - Pretty good, but not a top 5 center.
Tucker - Been on IR the last 3 seasons.
Miller - Big reason why McNair was punished so often last year.

If I'm Rex Grossman, I'm taking out an extra insurance policy.

from espn.com

Unrestricted offensive guard Cosey Coleman, a five-year veteran who had played his entire career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, reached a contract agreement with the Browns, ESPN.com has learned.

Coleman becomes the second guard to join the Browns in free agency in less than a week. The team signed former New England starter Joe Andruzzi to a four-year, $9 million contract last week. The refurbishing of the interior of the line is not surprising, given that new Browns general manager Phil Savage recently used the term "dire straits" to refer to the situation.

A former University of Tennessee standout, and a second-round pick in the 2000 draft, Coleman agreed to a two-year contract that, with incentives, can be worth up to $3 million. It includes a signing bonus of $500,000. Coleman, 26, visited with Cleveland officials over the weekend and then met Monday with representatives of the Green Bay Packers.

In five seasons, Coleman started in 63 games and appeared in 71 contests overall. Most of his playing time was at right guard.

We should have tried to sign Coleman for that price.

What yall think the Vikings got now, since trading moss with all that cap space, improved defense, now they need to get Mike Williams..

The Jags MB is reporting David Boston signed with the 49'ers, sorry I do not have a link. Nevermind what I said, the Jags MB was wrong...

FALSE ALARM ON BOSTON

A league source tells us that the 49ers have not signed -- and do not intend to sign -- free-agent receiver David Boston.

The story that Boston is heading to San Fran appears on 49ersnews.com. When the link was sent to us by e-mail this afternoon, we inadvertently deemed it to be a link to the team's official site.

It wasn't. And, officially, there will be no Boston in San Fran.

Various newspapers recently have reported that Boston is talking to and/or planning to meet with the 49ers. However, we've learned that there's simply no interest on the team's part at this time.

The Ravens agreed in principle with right guard Keydrick Vincent on a three-year contract Thursday night, coming to terms with their third starter in free agency.

The deal is pending a physical, which could be administered as early as Friday. Terms of the agreement were not available.

A 6-foot-5, 325-pound veteran, Vincent started the entire regular season and playoffs for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season.

He was widely considered the second-best guard available behind Rick DeMulling. Vincent, 26, has 27 starts in four seasons.

The Ravens were looking to upgrade from Bennie Anderson, a four-year starter at right guard.

Vincent joins receiver Derrick Mason and cornerback Samari Rolle as the Ravens' acquisitions this month.

I don't have a link, but the Chiefs signed SS Sammy Knight. He played the last couple of years with the dolphins and with the saints before that, he is also a former 2 or 3 time pro bowler.

That sounds reasonable. If Quincy was gettin the job done, they wouldnt go after a guy like Jay.

I wish I could remember where I heard they probably wouldn't ask him back but I cannot. I think about all they asked him to do was to hand the ball off but yea he did fine.

I've got to think that if Quincy gets his life straightened out that he'll have a job somewhere in the NFL or in the CFL. There always seems to be a place for an experienced QB.

Patriots | Dwight Agrees to One-Year Deal - from www.KFFL.com
Fri, 11 Mar 2005 10:40:30 -0800

USAToday.com reports the New England Patriots have agreed to a one-year deal with free agent WR Tim Dwight (Chargers). Financial terms were undisclosed.

Travis Taylor signs with Vikings, does this mean they pass on WR in first round? He's a pencil in at #3, if they drafted a WR he'd be ahead of Taylor, which would put Taylor at #4, and Im sure he got some descent money. Thoughts?

I think you'll still see them look for WR if Edwards or Williams falls to them. Burleson is arguably their best WR on the roster with the departure of Moss so they still need a big stud WR. Both Williams and Edwards fill that need.

Stockar should be a good pickup...the team is still a shambly imitation of a pro football franchise...but good pickup :hmmm:

you kidding right? South Beach, babes, warm weather, no income tax.

Only if he realizes his potential. He has never been impressive in Det, that is why they let him walk.

KIRKLAND, Wash. (AP) - Seattle signed cornerback Kelly Herndon on Friday after the Denver Broncos failed to match an offer sheet to the restricted free agent. The Seahawks also added veteran receiver Joe Jurevicius.

Seattle signed Herndon to the offer last Thursday, and the Broncos had a week to match. Though they declined, the Seahawks won't give up a draft choice because Herndon joined the Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2001.
Herndon played 45 games, starting 27, after signing with Denver in 2001. An undrafted free agent in 1999 who spent time in camp with San Francisco and the New York Giants, he signed a multiyear contract with Seattle.

Jurevicius, a seven-year veteran who signed a one-year deal, had 27 catches for 333 yards and two touchdowns last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played in 10 games, making three starts.

just an observation- while looking at the free agent market I was struck by the fact the average age was around 32 years old. live by the sword, die by the sword, man thats tough to be facing closure to something you enjoy and excell at then by your early thirties your services are no longer needed. just something for us a fans to think about when we view the modern day professional athlete, especially our Houston Texans football players. I assume most of them have familys they need to support and if their smart a second buisness or job to fall back on when their playing days are finished. its not all glory now is it :hmmm:
