this is me as well. I like him but not going as high as he’s being projected. This guy saw no pressure, rarely threw into tight windows and has effectively 1 year of work under his belt. The competition he gave also wasn’t stellar. I think he’ll need at min a year on the bench to catch up to NFL speed. That’s not a guy you take #2 or 3 overall and he will most certainly be asked to come in day 1 and be the guy if he goes that high.
The talent is real. I worry about his injury history. I would pick him at 2. Gotta take a chance on a talent like this. Agreed about letting him sit for a yr.

Excellent! This fits in perfectly with not having a draft. It's like walking into a desert with only one water bottle, it's an adventure!

Bah, its all made in the same sweat shop in China with a different label sewn on......

.... this may actually be the best time for bargin racks. No new huge contracts, see what you can find cheap, see what you have in coaching staffs ability to coach up... etc.

Maybe you find a diamond or two.

I have to say that I never imagined that we would be this active in FA. How do y’all like the signings so far?
I like them. Plenty of potential and these guys coming in on short terms deals will be looking to "prove" their value either to Texans or potential teams in the next FA period.
So we will see these guys trying hard to boost their stocks.
Shaq Lawson, Justin Britt, Malik Collins and Andre Roberts are all likely starters.
Texans addressed key areas - the trenches on both sides of the ball.
Thumbs up for mine.

Hey man, I'm really happy about this so far. These small, unsung players on short deals to help fill out the team and change the culture. These guys are going to play hard to get another longer contract whether here or elsewhere.

It's a very, very positive thing. And I know it's a lot of it because money talks, but having all these guys come to us before free agency starts shows that maybe the dumb (bullshit, blown out of proportion) reputation we have doesn't precede us like we may think.

Good. Let's fix this ******* franchise. Hope it works out. I'm not a Caserio fan because **** New England but hopefully he keeps up because I like his first few weeks.

Also add Cannon on the oline, Mark Ingram in the backfield and Christian Kirksey and it is easy to see Caserio has done his homework.
FA was where Texans had to be aggressive as draft picks are much more unpredictable and we have a lot of holes on this roster.
Can't wait to see what else happens.

So the Texans go uber active signing a bunch of JAGs and that moves the excitement needle? I mean, I guess new faces will do that.

Andre Roberts - 33 year old KR/PR
Justin McCray - 19 starts in his 7 year career
Joe Thomas - mainly Special Teams, 14 starts-7 yrs
Kamu Grugier-Hill - ST, 17 starts-5 yrs
Christian Kirksey - 13.5 sacks in 7 years

Kirksey, Grugier-Hill and Thomas - 17 career sacks between them in 19 combined seasons

Terrence Brooks - ST, 3 starts in 7 years
Maliek Collins - 14.5 sacks in 5 years. Yes I realize he plays inside so those numbers aren't going to be high.
Shaq Lawson - 20.5 sacks in 5 years with 6.5 a season high. Not bad for a guy nicknamed "Sack Daddy" or "Sack-a-Shaq" </sarcasm>
Marcus Cannon - 9 year vet playing RG? RT?
Mark Ingram - 10 yr RB on the wrong side of 30.

Collins and Cannon may be the best of the bunch here, and that's not saying much.
If nothing else the Texans should be solid on Teams this season.

These guys are going to play hard to get another longer contract whether here or elsewhere.
Mercilus and VH3 plays hard too. Doesn't make them good.

According to PFR the Texans have signed Vincent Taylor DT from the Browns.

I liked him alot coming out of Oklahoma St. Big guy with some agility. DT rotation of Collins/Taylor/Hall/Blacklock. Somewhat still suspect but has some upside.

If healthy I think the Collins/Taylor/Kirksey/Cannon and although on the wrong side of 30 there's still some tread on the tires of Ingram signings will be upgrades. Gotta use the draft to find a couple of CB's, a developmental edge and a coverage LB. These are very good depth signings and that's something the defense was really lacking last yr.

I think with Britt/Cannon/Ingram the offense will look much better. Mainly because I think Campen is a big upgrade over Devlin. Roberts should upgrade the ST's.

From all this, I expect the Texans to be competitive in some games in 2021. Not that they'll win any games, just that they'll be competitive in some games. Which, by the way, is a step that has to take place for a team that allowed themselves to operate without a qualified GM for a few years and allowed apathy to seep throughout the organization.

If we're lucky 2021 will be the worse it's going to get and most of the guys you pointed out in your post are just temporary placeholders while the Texans organization tries to find themselves.

But yeah, excitement is certainly not a term I would use to describe this transitional squad.

I wish this thread could provide in depth unbiased reports on these players. Most are guys I've never heard of, but that doesn't mean much. Also, could it be stuck to top of posts so all new players were readily found and discussed in one place?

Also, GM & Co deserve props for doing SOMETHING/ANYTHING to improve (?) team, even if it's only depth etc..

Pretty much every player signed has a “welcome to Houston X” thread with them.

MARCH 15: HOUSTON TENDERS HALL: If someone wants to claim PJ Hall, they're going to have to give back to the Texans. The former Sam Houston product was assigned a $2.133 million restricted free agent tender.
Hall had a quality season under Anthony Weaver following struggles with the Raiders. He started nine of 10 games played and recorded 34 tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits.

MARCH 15: TEXANS ADD SPEED: It was clear the Texans wanted to upgrade their need at wide receiver and special teams. On Monday night they did both by adding former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Chris Moore. The two sides agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth $2 million.

MARCH 15: TEXANS ADD COVER GUY AT LB Although it seems like Houston doesn't need another linebacker, this could be another high-reward signing for the long-haul. The Texans agreed to terms with former Washington Football Team's Kevin Pierre-Louis. The deal is expected to be two-years worth up to $8 million
Additionally, Houston is reportedly adding receiver Chris Moore from the Ravens via a one-year deal.

MARCH 15: DEFENSIVE REBUILD CONTINUES Nick Caserio's remarkably busy day has continued well into the evening with former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Joe Thomas the latest to be signed. Caserio's theme of short-term, low risk-high reward contracts continued with Thomas signing a one-year $2 million deal.
Thomas made a little over $1 million in 2020 but he just doubled that in his one-year deal with the Houston Texans. He can start, back up and play special teams. ... and in Dallas?
Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith need to be better. And depending on what Sean Lee decides about retirement, that leaves the Cowboys with a clear need for a third linebacker.

MARCH 15: TEXANS BOLSTER INTERIOR OFFENSIVE LINE With the hope of keeping Deshaun Watson protected in 2021, the Texans have agreed to terms with guard Justin McCray. The former Packers and Falcons swing player will join on a two-year deal worth $4.5 million, including another $1 million in incentives. The news was first reported by NFL Network's Mike Garafolo

MARCH 15: BROOKS BUYS INTO TEXANS REBUILD Houston will be adding another versatile defender to the mix this offseason with the addition of Terrance Brooks. The former New England Patriots safety is expected to join on a one-year deal worth $2 million per his agent, Drew Rosenhaus

MARCH 15: MALIEK BACK TO TEXAS Old Cowboys friend defensive tackle Maliek Collins moves from the Raiders back to Texas. He’ll help the Texans with the switch to 4-3, which he succeeded in during his time with the Cowboys - except for a series of troublesome foot ailments.

MARCH 15: TEXANS ADD SPECIAL TEAMS ACE Houston continues to address their special teams needs with the addition of cornerback-special-teamer Tremon Smith. Smith, who played last season for the Colts is expected to sign a one-year deal with a maximum value of $1.13 million. The news was first reported by The Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson

MARCH 15: HOUSTON HAS A COVER BACKER The Texans could be set with their 4-3 linebacker formation following the signing of Kamu Grugier-Hill. Gugier-Hill is regarded as one of the best coverage linebackers in the NFL and was initially drafted by Nick Caserio in New England. He'll join Houston on a one-year deal worth $3.25 million.

MARCH 15: RETURN MAN FOUND The Texans will be adding another wide receiver to the room following the departure of Will Fuller. Houston and former Buffalo Bills return specialist Andre Roberts agree to a two-year deal worth $5.95 million.
So ... Kamu can cover. And hopefully, especially on special teams, Roberts will make it tough on coverage opponents.

MARCH 15: EXPECT MORE TRADES That's the word from NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport. That makes Houston both a buyer and a seller here ... and with $30 mil or so in cap room, a buyer on top of that, it is hoped/

No doubt. Roster filler is what it is. Not saying don’t make all of these moves. It’s absolutely needed to fill out the roster. And maybe, with the different coaching they have, they can coach a couple of these guys up to make a real difference. Of course, they’d then be tasked with trying to re-sign them next year. And even if they don’t, with all the 1 year deals, we’ll be doing this same thing next year anyway.

Me, I’m just not as excited as some seem to be simply because there’s new faces in the building. Picking out and posting a highlight of a great play player X made and saying look at the potential. I can pick out a great play Mercilus or Hargreaves made and say look at the potential too. At least I think I can find a great play Hargreaves made. There’s one out there somewhere, right?

I look at their overall body of work, and what we’ve done the last 24 hours, is sign a bunch of roster filler. Again, needed, but still just that.

I know it’s unusual to see this much activity for the Texans, so maybe that’s why the giddy meter is running a little high for some, and I really don’t mean to be a Debbie Downer. I’m just calling what I see. There’s not really anything going here with all these signings other than roster filler. And the fact that we should have a Teams unit that should be the best in the business.

Agree they are roster fillers but some have actual upside.
I particularly like the McKinney for Lawson trade - super smart. We needed a DE and we unloaded McKinneys contract.
Caserio seems pretty switched on regarding putting guys into positions they are likely to be better suited for.
These are moves that had to be made.
Looks to me we have a real GM again and it will be interesting to see what he does today and going forward.

This team IS in rebuild mode so you have to make incremental changes using available resources.
This team, if it retains Watson, could well have a winning season this year.
My biggest reason for this is I see a vastly improved oline coming out of it.
It will likely take several games to start gelling but dumping Devlin was a HUGE move that will release the shackles so to speak off this line.
This will have a flow on effect to all aspect of offensive play.
Of this I am very confident.

Not sure there's much to dissect here so far. A bunch of JAGS that aren't good enough to move the needle and aren't young enough to ponder their potential.

None will likely be around by the time if/when the Texans are ready to compete for playoff runs.

If any of these guys turns out to be a gem then Casserio gets a mental kudos though.

SnakeEyes

Under NRG
Van Noy.

1, he’s a pass rusher and we desperately need 1 of those now that JJ our only pass rush last year is gone.

2...he’s also a former Patriot.....just saying
And Brown if I'm not mistaken. Former Pat or not if a guy can play sign them. On a side note we don't have a Pat's HC. Meaning that what Nick C was talking about "put a player in a spot to do what they are good at" only works IF Culley and staff do it. It's very smart football if they do it. This isn't middle school when a 6' 120lb guy is a DE. It's the NFL and a 6' 120 player better be maybe a WR (just as an example of what Nick said)

That's kinda the point. If Caserio was rebuilding, we wouldn't possibly have a winning season even with Watson.

imo, we're spending too much money for this to be a rebuild

Meh, most of the acquisitions have been on the D as we are switching to a 4-3 so we had to spend some money.
Also, we did have some other holes and not enough draft capital to fill them.
Caserio is playing this like he is keeping Watson - we may yet lose him but better to be safe than sorry and making these moves early in FA gives you the best chance to obtain the better guys out there.
Losing Watson and not being prepared would mean you would be relying heavily on rookies to perform.

On paper, this team looks to have a better roster than the 2006 team already.
They may not have Kubiak calling play, but they have a better line coach and Lovie Smith is better than Richard Smith.

They don't have a David Carr's situation either if they just go ahead and trade Watson.

This team can be rebuilt faster than the 2005 team simply due to the draft picks the Texans can garner from the trade.
