They were mediocre before him, but they didn’t have all the talent either. Fisher only really had Donald and Gurley. Goff was drafted the year McVay came on and through FA they subsequently added Cooks, Talib, Suh, Fowler, Peters, ....found CJ Anderson on his couch late when they needed him to fill in. All those guys were major contributors to the SB run & all were added just last year. Robert Woods and Whiteorth 2 other big contributor were brought in via FA in McVay’s 1st year as well.
And controlling the clock and picking your spots to be aggressive works just fine in the league today..it’s basically what the patriots have done for the last 20 years.
McVay tries to formation u to death and then uses the play action pass to strike deep. The plays themselves are the same. But as we saw here with Kubiak’s system over many years, that type of offense falls apart when your stud Rb is taken out of the game. The play action becomes less effective and your offense looks like trash. Gurley was already hurt in the SB, but Belichick made sure to take him completely out of the game with his defensive strategy and u saw what that offense became. 3 funky ass points. And for a supposed offensive boy wonder whose offense avg 30 ppg that shouldn’t have ever been possible.
You can’t sit up and say Goff isn’t all that good b/c he was one of the biggest reasons they got to the SB. Late in that NFCCG he was damn good...made some heads up throws when they needed it most and he outplayed Brees down the stretch.
