DW4 staying or going?

On May 1st 2021 DeShawn Watson will be:

  • Total voters
    53
I still believe this dust up between Watson and the Texans started with Easterby. I base this off of what Watson said in his last presser after his and the rest of the Texans ended, when he stated that there were people walking around the organization flaunting power that he didn't think they should have. The target of his frustration widened to include Cal when Watson came to understand (as we all did) that Jack was here to stay.
DW4 is the QB of the Texans and he's been pretty good at it. So good, that he was rewarded with a helluva contract extension. There are $156M reasons JE absolutely poses no threat to DW4 nor wields any power over him. Does he think he can justify who should have power within the organization? His thought process bothers me slightly but I'm chalking it up to lack of maturity (being young). He signed that contract and was all in before the season. A season that was marred by the pandemic, the firing of the HC and ended 4-12. He should be embracing the change (GM and coaching staff) and lead this team on the field vs what is transpiring. Let office/management staff do whatever their responsibilities are and he concentrate on maintaining himself as a high caliber NFL QB. Spend his energy motivating the players on the team to put in the extra work to be the best they can be, that's where he should be wielding the greatest influence. My honest belief is that it's about losing and not being confident that things can/will change (W-L). JE or the GM hiring is just the smokescreen being used, IMO.

Probably if we just stuck with the "facts of the case" this would make sense.

Watson repeatedly stated he loved playing for Bill O'Brien.
Hopkins traded.
Watson signs new contract.
Bill O'Brien fired.
Watson tells the media at his season ending press conference that he felt the season was "dysfunctional" for team. He mentions the team needs a "cultural change" and "structure". He also said "there's too many people (in the organization) thinking they have all this power." Who was he talking about? https://www.houstontexans.com/video/deshaun-watson-press-conference-1-4-2021
Texans hire Nick Caserio, a well-known long time friend of JE.

There's a lot to left to speculate on. Only the players themselves know how the season was for them behind closed doors. But it's not hard to figure out it wasn't a cohesive environment when routinely players would complain about other players to the media. That's not good and JJ Watt couldn't wait to get out of that locker room.

I'm not going after Watson with both barrels blazing like some, although I have been a bit frustrated at Watson. But I don't know how bad it was and is in that organization. I believe it's a highly dysfunctional environment, just based upon the turnover and the things some of the players have said. NFL franchises are no different than any other organization in that when the culture goes sour, employees start looking for the exits.

The players sucked last yr and need to be gone If your post is true. ( Which I think is likely to be the case.) The reason the Texans sucked last year wasn't because of culture. It was because in the beginning of the year they played teams that were much better than they were and lost games. After the BOB firing the players took on an every man for himself attitude.

It's Caserio's job to clean up the mess. DW4 was part of that culture and mess.

My thoughts exactly. Cal was about as natural as Biden while reading the prompter. Wish the press had the power to demand a presser with Easterby, before players come to spring training. If not, he'll probably pull out his pipe and lead them down to Jonestown !

Liked for the Jonestown reference.

I don't know. I can't say someone should feel a certain way about someone or something. Bottom line is, none of us can crawl up inside Watson's head and tell him how he should feel. I know that I would feel incredibly enthusiastic playing football for a living and getting paid all that dough. But I'm not Deshaun Watson. I haven't lived his life, experienced all that he has. I've lived my life and had my own experiences. Not to mention I'm 53 year old pudgy white dude, not some 25/26 year old world class athlete.

All that said, I've also written that if I was the Texans I'd make him play out his contract or force him to retire. Even though my feelings towards Watson has moderated some, I haven't changed my mind about that. Yeah Deshaun, I don't know how you feel about us or how you view your career path but your options are limited. You either honor your contract or go try minor league baseball...or whatever. But we're not trading you just to appease you and your agents ego. Stay and play, or go home.

Now this is some top of the line stuff. Agree with you on this one.

Watson's culture was trying to win games with inferior NFL coaches and a team lacking in talent. Watson got 4 wins and definitely set the table for a few more.

So you're once again taking the opportunity to toss your disdain for Watson into this as well. Let's seperate this issue.....Watson played his arse off last season and managed to drag a team deserving of 1-2 wins to 4 wins and the defense leaving a few wins on the field. I had complete hope at season's end that the team would somehow make a few solid picks in the draft as the team prepared for the 2022 draft. Watson screwed the pooch when he pulled this stunt and began acting like a pissed-off HS girl with nothing but revenge in her heart. With that, I'll put Watson's positives from last season and deal with the cards being dealt today. Watson needs to be removed from the team...completely!!! I don't want him being forced to sit b/c that's as good as the cancer being right there in the lock room daily. Caserio must begin entertaining offers for Watson's services and be prepared to move him before him before or at the beginning of the draft. His 2020 results on the field will be what the right team is looking at....not to mention he's a 25 year old "Franchise QB1" who's under contract for the next 6 seasons.

I dont care about locker room cancer since DW4 will be sitting out the 1st 10 games. Then when he came back I would suspend him for conduct detrimental to the team. (They will find a reason.) Unless Caserio gets a deal he cant refuse.

This sounds good in theory, but what does the CBA say about suspending a player coming off sitting out 10 games? Would Watson and his agent view it as punitive and go to the league office, union or arbitration? Has any team in NFL history suspend a player after sitting out?

Conduct Detrimental to the Team pertains to off-the-field behavior..

Actually if you read the CBA and NFL definition it’s very loose. This is from 2018 but it was best I could find.

“It is a privilege to be part of the National Football League. Everyone who is part of the league must refrain from “conduct detrimental to the integrity of and public confidence in” the NFL. This includes owners, coaches, players, other team employees, game officials, and employees of the league office, NFL Films, NFL Network, or any other NFL business.

Conduct by anyone in the league that is illegal, violent, dangerous, or irresponsible puts innocent victims at risk, damages the reputation of others in the game, and undercuts public respect and support for the NFL. We must endeavor at all times to be people of high character; we must show respect for others inside and outside our workplace; and we must strive to conduct ourselves in ways that favorably reflect on ourselves, our teams, the communities we represent, and the NFL.”

A good lawyer could argue that Watson sitting out hurts the Texans ability to sell tickets and be a competitive team. I’m sure an actual lawyer could word it better and come up with other things but you get the idea.

A good lawyer could make a great correlation out of those cryptic tweets he’s been making in the last 4 months. In which are directed at his employer and is causing negative press as well as a bad image to their brand.

Lol of course they’re doing that to themselves as well.

I do know there's conduct detrimental to the team language in the contract. I dont know if this scenario has been played out before. I do remember something happened with TO.

Tweets are another example of detrimental to the team off field conduct.
IF that's the case, wouldn't DW4 counter with Cal's judgment has been detrimental to the team? Exhibit A-C, look who he promoted to GM and football ops after 51-7. Look at the Hopkins trade. Hell, he even gave a 25 year old from Clemson input into hiring management. Who does that? LOL.

Hmm...all the more reason to support the fan lawsuit idea I kinda like.

I could've swore I heard ait was RD1. Thanks for the correction. Middle of selling a house n VA, remodeling the house in Atscocita (while in CA) and having cataract surgery yesterday. Not exactly been able to follow everything like I enjoy doing.

So, guess Miami could still be in play for Watson.

No worries.. they swapped 7th rounders this year for next year, that's all.

No GM is gonna pay a 1st round pick just to attempt polishing a turd like Wilson.

Chris Simms is hearing a trade with the Dolphins.
I dunno do the "Phins have any outstanding-to-elite caliber talent on the defensive side of the ball that they could offer along with their high Draft picks to entice the Texans into making a trade ?

True but a company can’t sue itself. Wonder if fans can?

The Seahawks left Russel Wilson out of their annual season ticket advertisement this year because they don't want someone suing them for misleading information in case he's traded.

Maybe this is why dw hasn't explained his side of the standoff?

That's my first thought, as well. He's using proxies, which may or may not be reliable sources of information.

Then why the cryptic tweets?

Plausible deniability.

Chris Simms is hearing a trade with the Dolphins.

Chris Simms, by his own admission, has taken too many hits to the head. He's hearing voices that might not exist. Plus, this stuff generates attention for click-bait culture. It's very low hanging fruit right now.

If the Chris Simms report mentioned here is the one I read it just said that the Dolphins were really willing to go all in with a huge trade offer. Something that's been mentioned by other people for weeks.

Wow I am so hurt. I thought you had read my several suggestions that dolphins are willing to trade cornerback Xavian Howard. He had 10 interceptions in 2020 and 7 in 2018. He did have a comparatively down year in between with an injury that he has recovered from. His issue is he signed a new contract if I remember correctly 2 years ago and saw Corner free agent Byron Jones come in & get a monster deal. Dolphins allegedly do not want to reopen Howard's contract. Sound familiar?

So Sorry BB ! I do read most of your posts because I know you have some informative insights on player value.
I'll need to go back and check out this one.
Truth I was wondering about the comparison between the 'Phins Christian Wilkins vs the Jets Quinton Williams, because it occurs to me if
NC decides to pull the trigger on a trade with the Jets or the 'Phins he should push to have either of those two young stud downlineman as part of the package.
What do you think ?

I am pushing for 1.2 from Jets so as mentioned earlier I want Q. I don't take credit for bringing him to MB in trade as another beat me to it. I did say I wanted LT Mekhi Becton also. Keep in mind that I think at 1.3 Dolphins leaves us out of mix for QB unless another trade {down} [SF 49rs?] brings us one. I would take Tre Lance.

Best trades for 'elite top 3-5 QB' Deshaun Watson:

1.2 + 1.23 + 2.34 + Q Williams + Becton + 2022 round one

1.3 + 1.18 + 2.35 + 2.50 + Tua + CB Howard plus 2022 round one and round two

*Q Williams 3rd pick round one 2019 6'3 300 23 YOA Alabama 2023 5th year option
2020 : 47 tackles 8 sacks 2 forced fumbles 14 QB hits = could be our new JJ Watt.
cost: Jets eat $11 million dead and Texans pay him $.850; .965 next two seasons.

Christian Wilkins 13th pick round one 2019 6'4" 315 Clemson 2023 5th year option
2020: 5 passes defended 1 forced fumble with recovery 47 tackles 4 FL 3 QB hits
cost : Miami eats $4.6 m dead Texans pay $1.9m and 2.6 next two seasons.

You're not going to get that much for DW4.

You would essentially be taking all of the NYJ good players and their draft picks for DW4. Douglas isn't going to do that.

I could see a deal involving Howard getting done with the Dolphins. Overall I think some are going to be disappointed in the return for DW4. I could see the equivalent of three 1sts and a player for DW4 at most.

Yea being a cancer in the 2021 locker room full of dead bodies will mean little. I would only move him for the deluxe peanut package. 3-4 1sts and a player.

Yep. Simms had no insider info. He's merely regurgitating the speculation and rumors that we've all read about ad nauseam for weeks.

It's the seemingly braindead media cow just chewing its cud again. :cow:

Media keeps talking about it because this is the biggest NFL story in the last several years. The problem is that its also the slowest developing NFL story in the last several years. Even IF Caserio trades Watson it won't be before the draft and until then he is going to keep repeating that Watson is not on the trade block. Watson is not going to do anything or say anything until then either to see if he gets traded. Then if Caserio doesn't trade him for whatever reason the next big event won't be till the start of training camps in, what, August. So basically the media is trying to win the Daytona 500 but the car they are wanting to use is a Prius.

For those around here that just want something to be done and for us to move on settle in because its going to be a long off season.

Excellent in capturing the situation as it stands. And the hopeful me, wants to wake up and whatever trade is going to happen is allover everywhere or the very unlikely (Watson has a press conference saying oops I forgot my job is to play NFL QB).

In short, I just want it over.

If you want the best deal waiting until just before the draft to make a trade is the prudent thing to do.

Yep. Ultimately, I want what's best for the Houston Texans, regardless of how long it takes (not that I have much confidence that they will do much with the draft picks, but that's a different conversation).

My mentality is prepared for the long game, even if that means Watson doesn't get traded until 2022. I'll be a Texans fan for longer than Watson will even be in the league, so hopefully Caserio is fully in control and whatever the Texans decide to do is part of his overall agenda to rebuild this team. I don't want his decisions hampered by some delusions of the halfwit owner, his goofy sidekick, or what other owners (and media) want the Texans to do.

Caserio should have two giant middle fingers up to everyone, including Watson. He's here for the long haul, so I'd expect that the current lack of activity is just part of his grand plan.
