DT Aaron Donald

Any way this guy falls out of the first because of his size? This kid is a wrecking ball. Relentless. I actually think his size could be used to his advantage since he's so quick and powerful. Eat and breathes football. He's supposedly a very hard worker and lives in the gym. Everyone talks about Clowney and Watt lined up together, but what if Houston could get TB and Donald with their first two picks? That fixes two big holes. OL/ILB in the 3rd and 4th. The rest of the draft on defense. Sign me up.

A "rolling ball of knives", but some say at his size everyone would run right at(over) him in the NFL. Wish there were more like him, though. Really looking forward to seeing his workouts/game in Senior Bowl.

I wish him all the best in the NFL but I can't see him being successful at the next level with his size issues. NFL teams will either run right at him, negating any quickness he might have, or huge OG and OT who are just as quick as he is will man-handle him due to his lack of size. I'll be interested in seeing what his real size is at the Combine, because we all know colleges don't know how to use a scale or measuring tape.

He is my pick in 2nd rd in my mock. amazingly quick of the line, leads the nation in Tackles for Loss. The best possible replacement for the Ninja.

If you like Donald then you would probably also like Attaochu with the 3rd rd pick. However I think when the combine is over I would not be surprised to see that Donald is a likely a late 1st first and Attaochu could move up to the 2nd rd.

Good grief! He is Leon Lett with a brain and low center of gravity! His ability to "get skinny" and quickness will translate to NFL... If he can handle the physical punishment and not spend his career on the IR, he will be a stud, IMO.

That's what I'm thinking. He's got a knack for getting through. With the burst he has, being shorter and stouter can't be a bad thing. He's got tree trunks for legs. Looks solid, too. Well conditioned. How do you stop that constantly without getting a holding call?

I think Mitchel will be re-signed to replace Ninja so I would use second round elsewhere

I will vomit if that happens. Mitchell is horrible. Absolute trash. Yeh he's playing out of position but he shows NOTHING that indicates he will be any better with a change of position.

I am officially in love with Aaron Donald.

If the Texans don't draft Teddy Bridgewater at #1 or trade down, I would want to hear Aaron Donald's name... I don't care if he is listed #20 or #30 on Kiper and McShay's big board. That guy is going to be a perennial All-pro.

Someone is going to get a steal if he slides because of his size. He is plenty big! The only reason he's not over 300 lbs is because he's relatively short. It is clear to me, though, that his shortness is an asset. He is remarkably quick, with a very low center of gravity, incredible balance and footwork... He's an absolute stud, game-changer on defense that disrupts an offense in ways that they can't answer because of his incredible quickness ond ff the snap, ability to beat double teams, pursue, finish, and his proximity to the quarterback.

The only negative regarding his size are short arms... However, he's so skilled with his feet balance that his hands are secondary... He's like a DT version of Dwight Freeney (only he is great against the run also)... I compare him to Freeney because both developed their games around supposed weaknesses (height). Freeney's ability to dominate the great LT simply by being in an athletic position low to the ground was rare and LTs had no counter for it. I think this guy will be similarly disruptive in the interior. Teams can't simply double team him with C and G, because he's just is likely to beat both of them into the hole, or slither through the double team after initial contact.

Aaron Donald #1 on my board!! Though I would take Bridgewater if I was running the Texan draft... Of course, I would then attempt to trade up into position to grab Donald in the middle of the 1st. Donald and Watt on the same line together would be an utter joy to watch. I don't know if I would even bother to follow the ball with Houston on defense.

For some reason, visions of Okoye flashed into my head reading this... wasn't the hype from his supporters saying the same?

Most of Okoye's hype was due to his age. Because he was so young it was thought that his potential would be higher than the other guys at his position. I graded him as a mid 2nd rounder at best but the Texans fell for the hype, unfortunately.

Yeah I know

Okoye's body of work doesn't compare to Donald's... Donald's tape is incredible- even if the stats for their final season have some similarities.

I don't think they are comparable at all. I hated the Okoye pick. I think Donald will be a player.

Okoye is the perfect case study of why you don't draft potential with a first round pick. There was absolutely nothing about Okoye's on field college performance and stats that said Top 10 draft pick. Okoye was exactly the same person he was at 25 as he was at 19.

Because of his size made him not getting attention like the other prospects? He is damn quick and strong to me. He is projected to go in the 2nd rd? Doesn't he look more of 1st rounder prospect than 2nd rounder?

Reminds me of Earl Mitchell only quicker but not as strong.

I think we screwed up by playing Mitchell at the nose. In a 4-3 I'd slide him over as a 3 tech, especially if we let Antonio go.

While Arnold is impressive, I don't think he is the answer to the Texans defensive line. He's an undersized penetrator, the same guy the Texans have been playing at DT for years. Can he be better than Antonio, Mitchell, or even Crick? Probably. But how much?

For us, he's redundant. If we go to a 4-3, we need a nose. He's not a nose. In a traditional 3-4, he doesn't have a spot.

The Notebook: Aaron Donald, master of technique

Pitt's Aaron Donald may not be as well known as some of the other defensive prospects in this year's NFL Draft, but that's going to change real soon. Retired NFL defensive end Stephen White took a closer look at Donald, only to find a player who will make some team very happy it drafted him.
The subject of this breakdown is Aaron Donald, the defensive tackle out of Pitt. I watched him play against Florida State, Virginia, North Carolina, Miami and Bowling Green. Those games were the season opener, one game in the middle of the season and three games near the end, respectively.

After Donald's performance at the combine, I think the best compliment I can pay him in grading his play is that his film blows his combine performance away.

And that's saying something!...

Regardless of who we took #1 or in the first round...

He's 6'1, 290 so technically he doesn't fit what Romeo Crennel wants from his DE's but this guy is a pass-rushing demon. You get a NT to stick in between Donald and Watt and both of these guys can rush the passer. Who needs OLB's....

Donald blew up at the Senior Bowl and was a freak in his senior campaign. (28.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, 16 QB hurries, and 4 FF's.)

To throw out more numbers...

Here are some career stats for some other guys compared to Donald,

Clowney - 24 sacks, 47 TFL, 20 hurries, 9 FF's.
Ealy - 14 sacks, 27.5 TFL, 12 hurries, 4 FF's.
Crichton - 22.5 sacks, 51 TFL, 2 hurries, 10 FF's.
Donald - 29.5 sacks, 66 TFL, 43 hurries, 6 FF's. (43? Is this Madden?)

Those numbers are sick.

Who has the ball? The RB or the QB? Oh well, tackle both. :D

All these plays just flash at least a fraction of what we've seen from JJ. Relentless motor, effort, and just a pass-rushing thug.

I like him a lot. Crennel's been around for ever. If he's learned how to be an NFL coordinator, he should be able to find a way to use talent like this.

That the proverbial man against boys right there. Whoever runs that name to the podium is going to get what they pay for, and more!

Donald is off the board before 15 fellas. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes before 12.

He doesn't fit what Crennel has historically run so I don't think he's on our board, but he's going to make some defensive coordinator very happy.

If only he fit our scheme. Like Mayock would say, "I'd bang the table for this kid." :pissed:

Whoever drafts him is getting a double digit sack guy with plenty of TFL's. If Crennel could move around Clowney why couldn't he move around Donald?

Donald and Watt rushing from the DT positions 70% of plays? I actually like that more than Clowney and Watt rushing the QB. It's all about the TFL's and Watt+Donald do it best.

Agreed!

Aaron Donald is best college football player I watched this past season. HE IS, #1 on my draft board followed by Sammy Watkins. Donald was often double and triple teamed but unlike Clowney was still able to put up some respectable numbers.

Ok, I agree AD is an outstanding football player, and may go somewhere as early as 5-10. RC could find a place for him, if we move him around and even put him at LB some. He believe he did LB drills at his pro-day and supposedly was impressive. He's got the total package, just in a smaller box.

AD & J Matthews are two of the safest picks in this draft. How you select, based off lowest floor or highest ceiling is what ultimately defines a players draft grade.

According to Todd McShay, the Chicago Bears are targeting Aaron Donald with their first selection in the NFL draft. If Donald were to be taken before the Bears selected, there would be “panic” in the Bears war room. PANIC.

If anyone wants to select Aaron Donald, they will have to jump in front of the Bears in order to make that happen. The Bears have the 14th selection in the draft and have a good shot at taking Donald with that selection, but they are not doing a good job of hiding their hand.

Then
"I've seen the mock drafts, and I know the Steelers pick at 15. Most of these so called experts have me being drafted by the Bears at 14 and that's just not going to work out for me. If I'm drafted before 15 I won't be happy, but I won't hold out. I know exactly what I'll do because if it's good enough for the pretty boy quarterbacks, it's good enough for me. So make no mistake about it, I'll force a trade if the Bears draft me at 14."

But keep in mind, the second quote is from an April Fools piece.
:kitten:

Maybe we should fire Crennel and draft Donald & switch schemes...?

Dude is beastly disruptive. Goodnight, Cyril...

Beating up like that on a poor defenseless small light weight tackle..........the shame of this houligan.........he will be in jail before the Draft begins.:clown:

I really don't understand why people aren't talking about this guy in the top ten. What about all this talk about the combine and prodays don't matter and tape is everything? How can you watch his tape and not have him rated top ten? P.S. He had a very good pro day and combine.

Donald is an excellent football player. I'd like the Texans to acquire as many excellent football players as they can in this draft.

Because the consensus doesn't have him in the top ten and it's scary to go out on a limb with your own opinion because people will hurt your feelings if you're wrong...:kitten:

I'm with you. He's a top ten player.

I've been playing mock GM with First Pick and the computer can't get over his size or lack of it. I'm leaning Tuit myself because of his measurables for the NFL and his projection by NFL.com of an instant starter.

It's hard to know how to proceed when we don't know what OB and Crennel have in mind for the future.

The toughest thing about mocking for us this year is that we really have no clue what Crennel has in store for the defense.

Has there been anything official about what D the Texans will be using? I heard Crennel has run the 4-3 before... with that in mind, I would not have a problem taking Donald at 1.1 if a trade back is not possible.

well kinda...O'Brien said a base 3-4, but they expect to play in nickel 70% of the time and they will still use multiple fronts.
