Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

He's my guy. Take him at the eighteen and don't look back. He covers CB this season and moves to free Safty down the line. We'll have a shot at ten and six if they draft him.

He looks like a natural corner to me. No reason to switch him to safety.

I don't think we reach for him at 18, and we won't be able to get him at the 81.

Same goes for Dunta. Dunta is a natural cornerback, I don't understand why people want him to move.

I don't consider Daunta to be a "natural" CB, as he gives too much space and seems to have somewhat stiff hips to be classified as a "natural".

However, on topic, Cromartie is similar in many ways to the Cromartie of the Chargers. Though they share no family ties, they are both physical freaks in terms of CB's. They both have great size and have production on the field. I don't know if I would take Cromartie at 18, as he isn't a day 1 starter IMO, but he is a guy who will surprise early. Cromartie needs time to develop, and at 18, we are looking for an instant starter. Also, I don't think his value is as high as McKelvin, Talib, or Cason. However, I would take him over guys like King or Dribble.

I think he is up there with Flowers, Porter, and Thomas in value. I'd take him before a guy like Tribble or King as well. Cromartie from the Chargers was pretty raw when he came out too but 3 years later we see what's happened. Having said that I will repeat something that YTF said and that is we are looking for a starter with our first pick.

They are cousins actually.

This is true, and I think the Chargers' Cromartie does nothing but enhance the value of the Tennessee State's Cromartie. However, when the first Cromartie came out of Florida State, he had previously shown he could perform at the highest level of college football to an exceptional degree, and the only thing that was holding him back were questions and concerns about his knee. The Cromartie from Tenn St. has questions about competition, but both possess similar attributes, and are considered "raw" but they are/were both deemed to have tremendous upside in comparison to other CB's in the draft.

one of the pay sites I subscribe to already has him upgraded to round one. with cb being primary position & FS as back-up.

regardless his body type reminds me of Jacoby Jones but even thinner. one hard NFL sized hit & :boxing: @ this point he is a high reward, high risk pick better left for a team that can survive without his services for extended periods of time until he can build up his body. the Texans need sure fire starting material that can hold up over the course of an NFL season.

Yeah, I've seen him listed in the 1st on a site or two as well, but in terms of his percieved value to the Texans, it should be lower than other teams for the exact reasons we both mention. We can't draft a project in the first to develop him. I would love to draft him as I think he will turn out to be a very good CB, but his value is over-inflating itself to the point where he is no longer of proper value to us.

Do I seriously have to give reputation to everybody on the site before I could give it to somebody else twice?

Anyways, I think a lot of the CB's like McKelvin, and Cromartie are going to get hyped too much that they might be gone by the time we pick.

I was really hoping McKelvin was going to stay kind of mediocre so we could nab him later in the draft, but it seems that just won't happen.

Anyways, I like the idea of having Cromartie on our team, but not for the price of our first round pick, because I think he would get abused and crushed egotistically if we picked him and made him start right away. I think he would need a bit of development so that his confidence will remain intact, but I do think he could be a monster.

I don't actually think McKelvin's stock will stay as high as it is right now. I don't think he will show top end speed at the combine, and the same with strength. His size will be played out as we near the draft as well.

These were my exact feelings towards Fred Bennett early this last season. Everyone was calling for him just b/c he couldn't be worse than Faggins. Hard to tell what woulda happened but I think the staff was wise letting him get used to the league for a few games...

Cromartie might be a guy that doesn't perform almost at all his first year.

what in the world is Mel Kiper thinking he had Aqib Talib in the top 10 on his mock draft on ESPN.

Dude, Talib is a top player.

how dare he make an educated guess on a subject he knows plenty about considering a player that's one of the best at his position to enter this year's draft. how dare he!

last yr was only his second actually.. looks like he suffers from 'travis johnson syndrome' :shades:

on second thought, maybe you knew that and just phrased it a different way:thinking:

When your front line corner is a forth round pick from last year...and you got Faggins and Von hutchinson as your two major back ups....I don't see it as a "Reach". We'll be damned lucky to have a shot at him. The fact that he could put on few more ponuds on his frame, with his ball skills, make him a nice guy to groom at FS. I'm hopefull that Robinson will eventually make it back. In '09 if all three are healthy...what are you going to do with the odd man out ? Me I put my best four on the field. Just me though . You may have been taught differently ?

I'm on board there Pete . We have a clamoring for a RB , OLB and and LT yet we are desperate for a CB .

You act like the nickel back isn't important. If we are going to beat the Colts consistantly, we are going to have to have 3 solid corners. How do you think San Diego beat them? Well, that's not the only reason obviously, but it certainly helped.

I just dont understand why you would draft a small school corner who people think may need some time getting used to the speed of the NFL, and then change his position. That sounds like a project pick if I have ever heard of one. If we draft a corner in the first round, he needs to be able to play CORNER immediately.

What's the plan anyway? Have him play corner the first year and then move him to FS? Or have him play FS from the start? I just don't understand it. If you have him play corner from the start, he is going to need time to get used to the speed of the NFL. That's all well and fine, except that we need a starter from day 1. Then your going to move him to FS the second year. He is going to need time to learn how to play FS and will probably not play the first bit of the season, or if he does, he is going to be learning a whole new position ON FIELD. If you put him at FS from the beginning, then we didn't fulfill our cornerback need and we have a backup 1st round FS to sit behind Will Demps, who could have a pro bowl year next year.

Safety and corner are two different positions. I know they are both in the secondary, but they require two different types of players. Just putting a few more pounds on his frame is not going to cut it. I'm not saying that he can't play safety in the NFL, because I really have no idea if he can or not, I am saying that there is alot more to moving a guy from corner to safety than just adding a few pounds. Coming up and tackling from the corner position is different than coming up and tackling from the safety position. Not only does it take more of a toll on your body, but the angles you take are very different.

And who do I think is the odd man out? None of them. You keep all three of them. Why get rid of any of them when you have the Colts in your division, and the Patriots in your conference. Two teams that destroy people with their passing game. Your going to have this problem no matter what corner you draft. Drafting a CB just because he could have the physical aspects of a FS in the first round just seems like a "reach".

Ah no. The difference, the only differences is that you expect your safties to be able to enforce the run support better than the lighter weight CBs. In this case however.... we have one guy, Bennit and if we're lucky, another guy IN DRC who posesses the frame to move into the FS position. Another difference between the CB and the FS....is the ablity to flip the hips turn and run, and the ablity to drop their but and jump the route because of superior foot quickness. In this case DRC poses this. Bennit does not...yet. If Dante does come back....they will groom either Bennit or DRC if we draft him, to be the future FS. Their bodies are long enough, they tackle well enough, that they will have easy transition into the poition. Put your best four on the feild. And either Bennit or DRC are alredy faster, quicker, than anything we currently have on the roster at the saftey position.

Currently at the 180's both are too light. I expect both of these players to put on adequate weight in the next two off seasons. At 205 to 195 they would be proto typical, not aberations.

The prime example of this is of course, Ronnie Lott. Who began his career as a CB and then was moved in to the saftey slot. He was a good CB. He made the HOF as a Safty. How ironic would it have been if they pigeoned holed the guy and told him you are only a CB ? You can not move to safty.

I humbly stand to disagree with your prespective on CBs and FSs.

The Texans are currently loaded with SS types. Their best FS is Hutchinson...he is an adaquate, blue collar DB.
DRC has the chance to be a very special player. He could plug the hole at Cb and with luck make the wieght to move to the FS slot. Eighteen year old guy , I expect him to put on some weight the next couple of years.

There are so many more differences in the assignments of a safety and a corner than enforcing the run.

The part that I have bolded here is something that corners need more than safeties. It's the corner that has to backpedal and turn his hips and start running with the receiver, or drop his butt and stop himself so he can change directions. Bennett most definately possesses this skill. One of his INTs this year was solely his ability to stop his backpedal, drop his butt, and jump the route.

What makes you think DRC can tackle well enough to be a safety? Did you see him make 3 tackles in the senior bowl? Is that it? I just dont understand where this confidence for this man's tackling ability has come from. It's one thing to stop your backpedal and come up and tackle a WR on a screen play, or on a slant route. It's another thing to come 15 yards off, full speed, and lay your shoulder into a NFL running back's chest. Two totally different kinds of tackling. DRC looked to be able to tackle from the cornerback position, keep his outside contain, and wrap up, yet I have seen nothing that tells me that he can tackle at the FS spot in the NFL.

The Texans are currently loded with SS types. Their best Fs is Hutchinson...he is an adaquate, blue collar DB.

Do you mean Von Hutchins? And Will Demps has played 3 times as well as Hutchins played, Demps is our best FS by far. He should easily be the starter for next year no questions asked. He did nothing but make plays when he played and started. After Dunta went down it was DEMPS and Bennett that brought the secondary together.

FYI If I where to do another Mock Draft (waiting until after the combine) with current information I would project Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie going #24 to the Titans. hometown, local product does well story fills Pac-Man hole giving them three decent young cb's with the option to really shutdown the secondary if they keep Jones or move him for another need like Chad Johnson (heard rumor last night coming home on the radio that Chad wants to be traded, but Titans not on his list, but thats where VY would come in).

Anyway this would give Cromartie some developmental time, a good situation for him @ CB.

I like that prediction.

Griffin seems more of a natural SS to me?

This was all I heard last year when I told you guys that he could play both FS AND CB in the NFL (which he has) & all I ever got back was that he should be a SS (which he hasnt been). Everybody said I was wrong, but nobody would tell me why.

In what way is that his more natural position? Just because he played there at Texas or what?

The guy is a very skinny 202 lbs & runs between 4.40 & 4.45.

Has very good hips & incredible instincts. Very good centerfielder.

I honestly never followed him much because I didn't like him in college, but he seemed to play back on his feet too much as well as being slower to the ball than ideal. He seems like he would be better suited to play in the box more than deep center field.

I always thought he was a damn good centerfielder. Clutch player.

how do y'all feel about this latest Mock Draft http://walterfootball.com/draft2008.php

Duane Brown could be tempting in the 4th also... I like this mock for the Texans overall but would prob. go with Brown.

1. D. Rodgers-Cromartie CB (or Rashard Mendenhall?)
3. T. Choice- RB (or Patrick Lee?)
4. D. Brown- LT

If this is how it started out...I'd look for OLB and Guard help in the 5th/6th/7th. In one round I might throw in a chance on a secondary player or WR that could be a steal- who knows. I'm looking forward to Gibbs' evaluation of these later round OL guys he wants to teach up.

dropped link on the Cromartie thread because of his selection by the Texans. did not really look @ the 3rd/4th rd. picks who address needs but are they fits for this teams future direction?

already posted on my Texans Mock Draft taking Roy Schuening, G, Oregon State as the #1 option with 3rd rd. pick & I see no reason whatsoever to change that pick, unless a player who fits our system & grades out higher is available like Ray Rice.

Roy is an ideal fit for zbs. he is a Gibbs type of player, technique, diciplined, quick in space, smart & hard working. love his game & would give the OL a real shot converting to a more true Gibbs style of zbs. Still need to address Center position & you can do that with Mike Pollack, Arizona State in the 4th. of the Centers @ the Senior Bowl he was most impressive, did not get pushed around & seemed able to dictate direction @ the point of contact, moving well with solid base & good footwork/hands.

You're probbly correct about your gaurd. And I would never bang an o-line pick...however if thirty two teams are foolish enough to pass on Collins some of them twice...I think it would be ad nauseam dereliction not to select the lad.

I'm hoping the RG is already on the roster. Agreed though, he is high end gaurd
prospect.
