CJ Stroud year 2

What would be informative is, how well did the "other" qbs perform while the eventual starter sat?

By some accounts, Stroud and Mills have not separated themselves during TC. If Mills were to start and perform well, how difficult would it be on the coaching staff to make a change without reason? Would we have a qb controversy and how would this affect the team? No, perhaps better to just start Stroud from the start and play him, win or lose. As at least one poster has stated, wins don't matter. This year.

Why do you have to have a reason to switch? “Because I am the coach and I say so” is sufficient enough.

What was the reason Alex Smith was benched for Mahomes?

I think people don’t want to see Mills start because they are worried that he will actually be good and give Stroud a run for his money.

Who is worried that Mills is gonna outplay anyone lmfao come on did we watch the same guy last year

I've made the same point and people think I'm crazy. I think he'd be well served by opening as the backup or even #3 for anywhere from 1 - 4 games and then throw him to the wolves. Do I think it will happen? Nope. He's trending toward starting but I'm with you. Taking the pressure off, even for a short time might do him some longer-term good.

We also watched the coaches and the talent on the field. People are beating their meat thinking about Tank Dell and we aren’t to believe Mills wouldn’t do better with him, a new offensive coach and receivers who aren’t like Cooks who was going through the motions the second half of the year?

We saw a kid come in as a rookie and look better under David Culley and Caserio on a headset to then regress under Lovie and Pep the following year.

Did we watch the same team last year?

You won't sell merch if he sucks.

I'll trust Coach Ryans to make the right decision for the player and the team. I doubt he gives a crap about merch sales, and I do not believe for a second that management has a say on when he plays.
Well then, I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

The Texans are a marketing firm with a football division. What's changed IYO?

The coaching staff probably would love there to be a true QB competition. It's not gonna happen per Hannah.

I saw a guy get benched for Kyle Allen, I saw a 2nd year QB who couldn't put together a good game. Didn't have a good supporting cast but it's your second year that's not showing enough.

I doubt it. According to DeMeco, only he and Caserio knew they were taking CJ. To say otherwise is to say that DeMeco is a liar and I don't believe that to be the case.
Not according to what's been said here by some very reputable posters. I've heard the same myself.

LOL
No, I can't speak for others but I don't want to see Mills start because he sucks.

There's a former Ohio State assistant coach that has his own podcast and after every game he does a video wherein he gives an analysis, breakdown, and grade for every play and every player. He uses game film from behind the line of scrimmage rather than the sideline views that we fans are usually watching. To say that his videos are illuminating is a massive understatement.

Do the Texans have anybody that makes such videos? It would certainly be interesting to have their take on Mills and everybody else.

Whether I like it or not the Texans are on the Stroud train ride. Lets get this show on the road.

I want to see CJ play and help Houston to win it all but only if he's ready. If CJ struggles then Houston needs to slow up and put the other guys in until and unless CJ is able to get the job done. I don't want Houston unnecessarily losing winnable games because CJ isn't ready.

No argument there but at some point the excuses have to run out.

But for Mills first two seasons....the Texans were more than adept at providing all the excuses needed. He was probably very close to being the best rookie QB drafted by the end of the season in 2021. Change the staff, insert an ultra conservative and damm near a 100% predictable offense, with a shady OL, and lackluster receiving group who couldn't get open....and what was everyone expecting? Year 2, Mills developed a very bad habit of throwing to the sideline off his back foot far too often.....which is a byproduct of having Mills OC in his lap by the time he got the snap in his hands.

As for your point.....the excuses run out when a better team is finally on the field. This is exactly the reason, I wouldn't hesitate to give Stroud sideline duty until a veteran QB puts this new offense through the paces, and Howard is back at RT. Set the table to give Stroud the best opportunity for success.

Davis Mills 10-22 for 94 yards against Miami's backups (yes he was playing with backups too). I had hopes for the kid, but to keep hoping for more than a backup appears wrong. Neither the stats or my eyes say anything great is coming from him. Ride CJ if he is close to ready and the OL will protect him, he has far more traits then Mills, and CK is not the future

From what I've gleaned the Texans had a terrible season for a variety of reasons that went well beyond Davis Mills.
Mills was a big part of the problem as well. Dude was widely inconsistent. He started off overthrowing his receivers, couldn’t hit on those out patterns. Once he attempted to make corrections he started throwing at his receivers feet. Now he did have some oh wow throws on a rope and in tight windows. Beautiful throws, just wasn’t doing it on a rate of consistency.

Agree.

Still, the point (for me) is not that Mills is better, or could be better, but that the team needs to be better.

There was a lot of optimism for Mills when we drafted him. But he came to a very bad situation. Three OCs/HCs in three years. Building the whole team for lack of talent. It's really not the ideal situation, even though other teams have had success in the same situation.

For me, I'd start Case because of his experience. Get the team right, then start CJ.

If the Texans coaches are confident that we'll run for over 100 yards a game as a team, & hold opposing teams under 26 ppg, then by all means start the rookie, the team is good enough. I'm not confident we'll be close. But I don't see what they see.

6 games in, if we're not close I'm going to criticize the coaches for starting Cj, they should have known better.

far as I know, we're still learning to block & tackle. That's no place for a rookie QB to develop.

Well not videos but we have a former NFL QB who drinks Coors, farts, belches and pontificates.

All I know is what DeMeco said. If Hannah made the pick, then why would DeMeco say otherwise rather than simply remain quiet about it?
Because not everyone is on TT with our secret sauces..er sources. Knowing that, Demeco should and is taking the responsibility.

I'm fine with this but I'm also fine with starting a guy day one. They're both strategies. You can point to examples where they each worked and examples where they both failed.

I suspect that they're going with the starting CJ from day one strategy.

I'm kinda wishy-washy on this topic, on who to start.

Right now, Case is supposedly injured; he didn't even suit up for the Dolphins game. Like you, I think he's our best chance to win games.

I also agree with people who think that Mills would be better with this team than he was with last year's team. However, I think he's got some serious consistency flaws in his game and some issues with processing speed and decision making. His accuracy is inconsistent. At this point, I see him as a mid-grade backup with the potential to improve. I don't want him starting over CJ. I'd rather CJ get real-life experience. With all that said, I want to go into the season with 3 QBs, and I like the three we have as a group.

Although I disagree with this post, I certainly think there can be a case to be made for your opinion.
