Basics yes but details no. How/when the signing bonus is paid out, various performance bonuses, offset language etc. all needs to be negotiated. If you were right all of these guys would sign within a few weeks of being drafted. There’s a reason why Young signed the day prior to reporting.
That's why you and I are posting on the forum of a mediocre NFL team and not sports agents.

Exactly. The point isn't that Young signed before Stroud. It's that Young's signing bonus is paid upfront. They will now negotiate off Young's contract structure.
And that is why normally the 1.1 pick would be the last to sign

#2 pick last year & the #3 pick this year should be his only concern.
Granted it’s not his fault the Panthers scheduled their camp a week ahead of Houston’s. I get that. No reason for him to sign before camp. At the same time, absofreakinpositively no reason for him to wait until the last minute.
You guys aren’t worried about the agent wagging the dog, but this is the first Stroud/Mulugheta interaction with our team. Not looking good. Again, absofreakinpositively no good reason other than to demonstrate a vulgar display of power.

He should make sure his contract is in line with last year's #2, possibly better & in line with #3 this year, definitely better.
#1 deserves a privilege #2 does not. #2 deserves a privilege #3 does not. #3 deserves a privilege #4 does not. #4 deserves a privilege #5 does not. #5 deserves a privilege #6 does not. #6 deserves a privilege #7 does not... etc...
It's #1's job to make sure he gets his privilege.

The dollar amounts are set per pick slot. #2 will get more that #3, less than #1, and more than 2022 #2. That's non-negotiable. How the signing bonus is paid out (not the amount of the bonus) is negotiable. The amount of guaranteed money the teams have to pay a player that is waived and picked up is negotiable. The actual money on the contract is set.

So, if you are selling your house and a prospective buyer comes in with a bid lower than the listing price. You tell the buyer that the house next door went for this amount and the house across the street sold for this amount and you priced it based on the trends in your neighborhood. It's okay when the buyer responds with, "what's that got to do with the price of tea in China"?

The fact that the other 2 qbs mention being signed already and their TC dates either start today or tomorrow should play some factor in viewing this...would I like him signed already? Of course, but until he misses TC days Im not going to worry about it.

Money isn't the issue. The question is how the money is paid out. Some people believe if the #1 pick gets his bonus up front a few days from signing, the #2 pick should be able to say, if the #1 pick got it, I should.

What surprises me is that WA Jr. signed so early...not typical for anyone in top 5 to sign before all the others are done...nothing to do with Stroud.

Sheds a little light on a subject not discussed or talked about very often....but in the article it talks about the bonus being spread out over 5yrs which used to be the norm...now you have teams paying it out all at once in a lump sum...so Im assuming that the numbers that effect the cap are different in a situation where the bonus isnt amortized over the life of the contract....correct or did I read that wrong???Leigh Steinberg: Explaining the NFL system of rookie contracts

You read it wrong.
The bonuses are spread out for the cap over the life of the contract regardless of a lump sum or payment installations.
Or, as Lucky just pointed out, you read it wrong.

It does say the signing bonus cap hit is spread out over the 4 years, but how it is paid is negotiated. the Owners want to spread payments out and the players want it paid up front. As has been discussed extensively in this forum recently. It also talks about the offsets and why they are a point of negotiation.
