Carson Wentz, My #1 QB going into 2015 college season

Two years ago about this time I was saying that Blake Bortles would be a first rd draft pick and wouldn't be surprised if he was the first QB selected. Many disagreed, one they were saying Bortles would return to school and two, if he did declare he would be a day 2 or 3 draft pick. At this stage in the process Carson Wentz is better than Blake Bortles.

I don't think this damages his draft status much. The injury's not going to diminish his skills, there's a fair amount of tape on him, and he should still be back in plenty of time for poke 'n prod season.

Ryan Leaf's broken wrist caused him accuracy issues. One time he would throw a beaufiful ball. The next time he would sail a ball over a WR's head for a pick. Hope the same doesn't happen to Wentz.

I admit I'm going off of assumption, just hearing broken bone in his hand that this is just a metacarpal and he'll be fine when it heals. Wouldn't be the first time I've assumed wrong though, certainly hope not this time.

I believe that's engaging in some wishful thinking. If he is a first rd pick before breaking his hand he will be a first rd after breaking his hand. I still wouldn't be surprised if he was the first QB taken in the draft. To Wentz advantage he now has a 2 month advantage to prepare for the draft.
 
Sure, in a what if scenario I'd love to get him as an UDFA. That's value.

But I don't think a simple broken bone in his hand, assuming that's all it is, is gonna be a draft killer for the kid.
 
People say this or that & something different often occures. Still think Texans have to go BPA in first & hope Wentz is there in 2nd. If they really love this kid they could always move up to get him, or trade back & add more options.
 
Seeing this thread makes me ask the OP, how did that Bortles crush work out for you?

Why should I by the Wentz koolaid, with that the product history?

Not just Bortles, but Tajh Boyd & Bret Hundley. Just three years ago, we were impressed with what we saw & thought both of them (& several others I'm sure) were worthy of a first round grade.

Then we saw something else, something we didn't like & the guy is nigh undraftable.

With three months left in the season, we're not going to get the chance to see that something from Wentz. Maybe it's not there. Who knows?

Who in their right mind was getting behind Tajh Boyd?

And what's wrong with Hundley? I still think he can play. Preseason is just preseason, but his only one so far was outstanding.

As for Wentz, I think he's already showed something. There's adequate tape on him and plenty of time for him to shine further in workouts.
 
I was not a big fan of Bortles. But the book is still out on him.

I like Wentz though. Not sure if I'd take him in the Top Ten (not ruling it out, just saying at this juncture I'm not sure).

Only reason I'm not 100% all in is because I haven't seen all his games yet, and the competition he played.

But if I'm just looking at him and the skills he brings to the table, I think he has top 10 ability.

Before his last season we had several draftniks looking at getting Boyd with a late first round pick. Hundley as well.

There was plenty of film on both of them as well, but there final seasons weren't as impressive as some would like & they fell out of the first round.

We're not going to see Wentz play with the added scrutiny of a possible first round pick, without the increased anxiety of the draft...

Mettenberger was thought to be a 2nd rounder. He was never very mobile to begin with. A blown ACL should have had no affect on his game. But he was out of the picture about this time & "the process" elevated Derek Carr & Jimmy Garoppolo.

From what I saw Sunday the Jags have a better QB than the Texans even with Bortles doing his best Peyton Manning impression. I was highly impressed with the number of times that Bortles escaped pressure and extended the play. How many times did Watt have Bortles in his crosshairs only for Bortles to escape? He did the same thing to Clowney when UCF played USC. The INT to end the half was a credit to Bouye who bumped Julius Thomas to the outside and didn't let him come inside.

Unfortunately for Bortles he doesn't have a very good supporting cast, some of the worst in the league, OLine, Pass Pro, running game. On top of that the Jags are one of the youngest teams in the league and also dealing with a lot of injuries. Making things worse is Gus Bradley is proving to be another not so good head coach and could be fired this year. For Bortles that would mean three offensive coordinators, three different offenses, in three years. That said I expect Wentz to be better than Bortles but imagine Wentz would have the same problems in Jacksonville that Bortles is having today.

Last Word: The term "Players Coach" has become a dirty word for me.

Mettenberger falling in the draft had little to do with his injury. It had more to do with the character red flags because of his arrest and expulsion from Georgia and then him failing a drug test at the Combine.

& he made some damn good prime time throws. I was more impressed with Bortles Sunday than ever before. The INTs he threw weren't stupid throws imo, they were trying to get someone to make a play. Unfortunately for him, the great Andre Hal was a better play maker than his guy.

But to say he was better than our guy... not that day he wasn't. In time, maybe. If the Jags build a better team around him, get him involved in the offensive planning... maybe.

On the end of half INT Thomas was bumped outside. On the pick six Thomas stopped running and sat down, Bortles was expecting him to continue his route. Don't know who was at fault, communication failure. Thomas first yr as a Jag and first game as a full time time starter. Definite miscommunication there.

Definitely a huge determining factor in outcome considering 1st game with Bortles after 2 full seasons with Manning. He was injured though most of the preseason as well I believe so this was pretty much their first true game action together.

For a big guy, he has 0 pop on his balls. He looks like randy johnson but throws like tim Wakefield.

Clearly we disagree, I see him making more BIG time NFL throws than any other college QB in 2015. In fact from what I've seen Wentz can make all the throws he will need in the NFL. A lot real actual NFL scouts also disagree with you also. Up until Carson got hurt he had more NFL scouts going to his games than any other QB.

What NFL Scouts are saying
“First time I saw Carson was his junior year and my first thought was why the heck is he here? Why isn't he at Ohio State or Alabama? But credit the Bison coaches for seeing something and developing him. I like the arm talent, the size obviously stands out and he's shown the ability to think on his feet and make the spontaneous decision. You see a lot of traits that says he can start in our league” – AFC North scout

Q: What would you consider your best strength as a quarterback?
A: Hard to say just one. I can make all the throws. My mental side is a strength as far as understanding defense schemes and our playbook. I'm able to change plays when needed. I think that sets me apart.

My Conmments: One important thing for me in my evaluation of Carson Wentz is since he was a Junior in High School he has consistently gotten better and progressed each and every year with the exception of this year due to his injuries, high ankle sprain, broke a bone in his wrist.

To which I disagree. Wentz is a 5th year Senior, has much experience than Bortles had at this time who came out early as a Junior. Wentz is also a better athlete. While I wish your projection was true, I still contend that Wentz will be a first rd pick and not surprised if he's the first QB drafted.
 
Wentz has my attention. You have to look @ him & specificly QB position different. First off, everybody needs to understand there will be developmental time. Worst thing. In the world for 99% of QB prospects is to throw them to the wolves too early. Second, it's not as much what a specific grade a prospect has in the moment it's what he develops into 3-5 years from now. Last but not least are what tools does he have? Obvious ones are arm strength, accuracy, leadership & intelligence. But with nature of NFL, QB's are dropping like flies, so it really helps if you add in athletic mobility in the equation. I realize Wentz is out with a broken wrist, but he feels good about returning for Senior Bowl & Combine. Freak accidents happen which is why you need depth. But he is a player to covet for his position because his toolbox is loaded & clearly trumps from a talent standpoint what Texans have ever had @ position.

You're dreaming if you think this fan base is gonna wait 3-5 years for any qb to develop & if that's what you project this guy's development curve to be, then he'll be destined to fail..Way too long imo anyway. You usually know what a guy's gonna be by the end of year 2 if he's been consistently playing...3 years is the absolute max allowing for the occasional late developer like say Drew Brees.

That is & always will be a problem for fanbase to resolve own personal issues. Luckily or not, that's why paid professionals oversee the process, lol :barman:
