Brian Gaine Fired

If this was really about Dillard it would be hilarious:

"If we really like a player and we have conviction on this player, like we know we have a consensus that the scouting staff and the coaching staff like this player, we have a vision, we know where this guy is going to fit, let's go get him," O'Brien said recently in a season ticket holder conference call. "So if we feel like we're going to lose him, let's trade up and go get him."

"I don't know if that's been done a lot around here before," O'Brien said. "But I give Rick credit, he did it. He did it twice, and we were able to get some good players. Again, those guys need to go out and play now. But we feel good about where they are."

My only gripe about Gaine is that he did not maneuver in the draft to maximize value of selections in the 2 drafts where he was GM. The Patriots, Seahawks and Ravens are masters at this. Packers with their new GM have aggressively manipulated the board last two drafts as well.

They will move up and down the board identifying talent and capitalizing based on where their board ranks the talent. Gaine stayed put and took who he thought was best selection at each slot in the draft. Whereas I would’ve preferred more aggression acquiring more picks in current/future draft. I still think Gaine did a good job while here and this negative is not nearly as bad as say consistently whiffing on mid round picks/high priced FAs.

From a draftnik perspective this is spot on. You just can’t foresee or count on a Trent Williams popping up in the market month after draft. So he was committed to improving the OL and I’m not going to hate him or fire him for that.

This move is more about O’Brian/Crennel tightening the leash around Cal McNairs neck.

My only gripe about Gaine is that he did not maneuver in the draft to maximize value of selections in the 2 drafts where he was GM.

He also didn't maximize free agency to lessen the burden of having to hit all homers in the draft. This is in no way saying they have to sign all the top FA to a bazillion dollars, but there are moves that can be made where you're not putting all of your eggs in one basket and not killing your cap.

He would say, "I told you so". Then he would remind you that no self respecting Head Coach or General Manager is going to come to Houston and subject themself to the Circus at Kirby that is masquerading as a boardroom. The Kirby boardroom/circus is career killer. Then he would tell you that the best hope for the Texans is a sibling rivalry uprising in the next 3 to 4 years and they will demand their fair share of the Houston Texans pie (cash they can spend) and the team will be sold. Then hope that the new owner is much better at winning than they are at meddling. In closing he would say, until then this conundrum will likely to go from bad to worse.

In his IMHO, he would say Gaines is gone because after the Texans got a good look at Tytus Howard and they realized he was another Louis Nix III pick, only worse because it was a 1 instead of a 3. He would also point out that if you watched Howard's Combine workout you can see and hear coaches running every drill say faster, faster, hurry up, you're to slow.
I’m about to hurl at the possibility of Howard being another Louis Nix level bust. Welcome back my man. Appreciate the perspective you give.

It's called a sports blog for a reason. Bwhahaha you're going to always get several different type of reaction.

And stop it, we don't have enough data to say he was on his way to becoming a great GM.

Not at all. You omitted the first part of the sentence. It's kinda relevant to what I was saying.

I didn’t address it because no it’s not relevant to the point. You think Howard deserves a chance. How is that relevant to someone deciding Howard is hopeless after less than a month. Unless you mean the part about being advised in which case that’s even worse.

There are only two people Gaine not taking the advise of would have led to his firing, BoB and Cal. If it’s Cal then we have Jerry Jones 2.0 and I can move Baltimore from my number 2 team to my number 1 because I hate owners that hire people and then don’t let them do their jobs.

Even scarier is if it’s BoB, you know the guy who felt that a Mallet, Hoyer and Savage has what it took to be starters at the most important position. The guy that thinks Miller can be a power RB or that Devlin can build an O line.

Oh yeah, this will end well.

We can speculate all day but if everyone else was in agreement in that warroom that Dillard is the better prospect then it absolutely has something to do with it.
Please notice I didn't single out one individual.
The last paragraph - well, I'll allow that you like me and anyone else is welcome to their opinions.

I just remembered that after the draft, Gaine fired national scout Frantzy Jourdain. Jourdain had been with the Patriots for 13 years prior to joining the Texans in 2016. Was this the cause of the friction between O'Brien and Gaine, or just the results of the offseason, in general?

Nix was injury prone and had work ethic issues. You don't like Howard because you think a small school tackle is not good. I hate to tell ya, Talent is Talent. If you have it, then it doesn't matter the school you go to. It is about putting in the work....

But does O'Brien believe in Howard's talent? Howard was kicked inside to LG not long into minicamp. That should have been a signal that a problem was brewing.

Nix was considered a 1st round talent and due to risk fell to the 3rd. You take gambles, sometimes you lose. People beotch & moan about being aggressive and then want to hindsight it. The decision is what it is while you're holding the dice not after the roll.

31 other teams had him figured out. He had more red flags than a Moscow May Day parade.

Some opinions from Pat Star that I hope are correct.

@PatDStat
Over the years I have had fans, readers, listeners and on-lookers have vocal opinions on the #Texans sitting back and being okay with the status quo. It is clear that Cal McNair is not okay with the status quo. Many will point at OB pulling the trigger to get Gaine gone.

@PatDStat
If anything Cal McNair has realized that the #Texans more than likely have not moved the needle that much in their two most important position groups of need. Offensive line and secondary coming into this season. That was Gaine’s primary job during the off-season, not OBs.

@PatDStat
There were plenty of resources available for Gaine to make moves to help both position groups and he stood pat. Add in McNair feels there is no reason that Jadeveon Clowney should not have a new deal with all the available cap room for the team to get a deal done.

@PatDStat
This comes down to Cal McNair not liking the direction the Texans were headed from a plan of action standpoint. Resources were not maximized and Cal had seen enough.

(In response to Gaine being respected on personnel decisions but not other GM duties)

@PatDStat
Gaine interview for multiple GM jobs being passed over before. Then he landed the Texans one in which he was not even the top candidate. Most of the candidates they wanted were still in the playoffs and requests were denied.

Something like that would be egregious and grounds for termination if BGs eye for talent and judge of character was that bad.

I get Cal not being happy with Gaine's trip to the grocery store. But someone had to put the idea in his head that dinner could not be cooked with the ingredients at hand. That someone had to be O'Brien.

If this really does have to do with friction between BOB and Gaine and Cal is enamored enough with BOB to give him that much control, this organization could be in big trouble. On the field, BOB has a lot of room for improvement. Off the field (talent evaluation) he's much worse at. Dude needs to recognize his weaknesses and give up control in the areas he's not strong in. Really, really hoping that BOB's not the reason behind this firing.

32 teams passed in the 1st & 2nd. You have no idea how far he would have slid. Duane Brown was a "reach" that would have been taken with the next pick.

Trading up is saying this is a steal. No way Brown was going to last much longer. Second round pick for sure. I’ve seen Nix slotted as low as 6-7 and even later due to health concerns. His biggest red flag to me were the questions about his motivation...like Sam Montgomery.

This is such dumb spin.

Obrien is signing off on all the moves.

And if they want to get a deal done with Clowney they can just pay him what he's asking. As if Gaine isn't collaborating with owner and head coach on that.

I get Cal not being happy with Gaine's trip to the grocery store. But someone had to put the idea in his head that dinner could not be cooked with the ingredients at hand. That someone had to be O'Brien.

No one had to put that idea in his head. Cal is just as capable of forming his own opinion as O'Brien or people on this message board.

It's possible. And it's possible he's not. We have no way of knowing this right now. It's simply a suspicion.

Suspicion is not evidence. It's a psychological mechanism to prepare for a specific outcome when you don't have the necessary facts. Emphasis on the "don't have the facts."

What are you looking for? A video of Cal and O'Brien discussing the firing? O'Brien calling a presser and proclaiming "Yep, it was me. I'm the GM killa. Let that be a lesson to the next SOB that takes the job."?

Are you being serious or just feeling contrarian? Psychological mechanism? Really?

It's crazy enough firing a GM after FA and the draft. Absolutely insane to fire the HC.

I would feel better if it was Cal doing this on his own and putting O'Brien on notice but I think he's doing what O'Brien wants. Doesn't make sense to give O'Brien one last year to prove himself then handcuff him without his GM.

Now O'Brien gets another year or two at least with a new GM.

Who knows if Cal turns on O'Brien after a disappointing season? Maybe the next GM is better at parlor politics than Bill (Please don't call him Butt Chin)? This may or may not work. But, it ain't normal.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of GM wants to come into this situation.

But if we do get a real GM like Caserio, he could push out O'Brien.

Looks like you choose to ignore the fact that Obrien moved most of the linemen around.

Gonna be interesting when the other shoe falls on this story.

Can only imagine what this board will look like if the godfather is coming back. :choke::gun:

"Mechanism" because it's often knee-jerk. Much like assuming all counter arguments to be irrational.

Cal knew which players were on the market. He understands the team's needs. He had made clear what the offseason objectives were. Does he need a coach to be his GM evaluator?

I don't doubt O'Brien has influence in the decision. That's called consensus, and it's expected.

But it's funny how everyone on this message board has the confidence and free will to hammer out daily "Fire so-and-so!" and when it happens, we must assume the owner of the team doesn't posses that same confidence and free will. He must be under someone else's influence.

This may be the first time I've been accused of contrarianism for saying "It's possible you're right."

Maybe he hates all the linemen Gaine brought in?

Sounds pretty rational. Like all the other June GM firings that go on.

I'm thinking Cal is the Mad King and O'Brien is Little Finger.
