Awesome...Running Back with our 3rd...

just insurance for DD, incase he gets injured. Could be a good second option and give DD some rest...other than that idk.

I am going to have to do some research on this ... this is a headscratcher to say the least..

They liked Morency the best at their pick so they chose him. Remember they draft based on who they think is the BPA (aside from extreme situations like drafting another QB in the 1st).

WE have taken to many RB with our picks. Hollings, Wells, DD, now Morency. I'm disappointed that we didnt pick Wilkerson or Brown or Hawthorne or BLACKSTOCK. He would have been a gr8 value pick!

The Johnson pick wasn't terrible. I agree with you Wolverine. Maybe CC has something up his sleeve.

There has to be a limit to the BPA position. I guess our coaches feel a lot more secure about the offensive line than most people on this board. I just felt like Tuck was the obvious choice there...As apparently Seattle felt as well.

I wouldn't say that they feel comfortable with the status of the offensive line, but I think there were no OL prospects who grabbed their interest as an upgrade at this point.

maybe this is a hint that Tony Hollings might not be on the team come the start of the season.

Wow, was I wrong. I thought that the team was going to get a big back instead of DD ver.2

Wells can fill that role, if need be. He was far better than Stacey Mack was in that role, comparing year-to-year. More versatile and could be trusted to play well in situations requiring more than 2 feet of forward progress.

They had some nice things to say about Morency. He looks like the shifty type of runner who can make some things happen while DD catches a breather.

With this pick you can officially call the 2nd round pick of Hollings is a BUST.

Nothing shocking here. The consensus was they were going OL, WR, or RB in the 3rd. Remember that this OL class kinda sucks, and next years is supposed to be awesome.

FWIW this is what nfldraftblitz had on Morency at an early stage:

Morency is a very quick back who put up huge numbers for Oklahoma St. this past season. He has great vision and is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. He has good size and has the skills to be a good receiver. After spending four years in the Colorado Rockies organization, Morency switched back to football and put up impressive numbers in his short stay with the Cowboys. He showed flashes of his ability in 2003 playing behind Tatum Bell, but did not get his chance to start full time until this past season. He is a solid first round pick and could end up being the first back taken in April. Reminds You Of: Curtis Martin, New York Jets

Doesn't sound all that bad now, does it? Remember how much more balanced the offense was with DD? The talent level drops off dramatically after DD.

I don't think so at all. Hollings will make this team this year and contribute.

In a perfect world there are no busts....however, in reality not every player can eventually be a starter in this league, it's a guessing game. Besides, I think they took a bigger gamble than normal by taking Hollings and that in itself is not a bad thing. Sometimes you have to make gambles to hit the jackpot.

Maybe the bust pick was Wells. Then again, DD is the only really productive back our YOUNG franchise has drafted. I can see the coaches making this pick.

We just got the same sort of back as DD. That is not a bad thing, but passing on Blackstock, Hawthorne, Elton Brown and Jerome Mathis are just ****ing *****ic. I understand the BPA, but our defense is atrocious and our offense is aneimic due to lack of production. I like Morency, trust me I really do, but for our third round pick when players that could immediately provide much more help is just not sensible. I will just look at Blackstock, who has played in a similar defensive system and is known for rushing the QB(our largest problem) we pass on. He is pretty much like Peek except he is a true OLB in a 3-4 whereas Peek is more of an ILB in a 3-4. Ohh well there is always tomorrows picks.

if all else fails he can go play baseball for the Astros, since he has played for the Dodgers i believe.....mabye pitcher he couldnt do much worse than Duckworth...

Having seen this guy play, I say this is a good pickup. I was just thinking this morning, when I saw his name on a list of RB's in the draft it would be great if the Texans could get him. I know he gave UT fits a time or two. :thumbup

well someone in that group is not doing it. If DD is our starter, Hollings is the backup, then Morency will be wasting in the wind.

If Morency becomes a Starter and DD then become second, the Hollings is a bust.

Morency is good, but if we were going to take a RB I'd have preferred Fason. Guess DC didn't like his upright running style. Leaves him open for lots of hard hits.

I agree with Cadahnic, Morency is a good RB and I thought he did well at OSU, but he is very much the same type of RB as Davis and we have Wells as our big back and Hollings as the speedster so I'm not sure why we would pick a RB when we have some other needs to address.

We have passed up some really good players so far I think that could actually get some playing time this year. Travis Johnson will be switching in and out and Morency will at best be backup. We haven't got anyone that will make an impact.

If we have a good 2nd day I will feel better, but if they don't get a decent DE or OL I sure hope they are looking at some free agents.

Travis Johnson isn't too shabby.

What needs? not CB, not FS, not SS, not OLB, not DL now, not WR, not QB

maybe ILB, OL, TE and that's about it. Casserly thinks interior line is very deep in this draft; what TE would you have taken?; I still don't know if Zeke Moreno is on our team or not

i think that is why we traded down to get another pick next year. the LT alone are awsome next year and we might want to trade up to get one and that 3rd rounder could help with that. i like vernand and think that he has better speed than people give him credit for. i know he didn't run well at the miami pro day but he can break one if he has the chance.

I think when the Texans used this pick on him they were assuming the Raiders would be good since they were coming off a SuperBowl year. I doubt they would have used a 2nd round selection had they known it would have been such an early spot. Still, the Texans might keep all 4 backs on the roster.

(04-22) 16:22 PDT (AP) --

Not being included among the top three running backs in most mock drafts hasn't stopped Vernand Morency from being confident heading into the NFL draft.

Morency, who rushed for 1,474 yards as Oklahoma State earned a trip to the Alamo Bowl last season considers himself in the same category with the top-rated tailbacks heading into Saturday's draft.

"When people watch film, I know they're going to love my film," Morency said Friday in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "I know what kind of a running back I was. I could've easily been up with the top three running backs: Ronnie Brown, Cadillac Williams and Cedric Benson. Those guys are just publicized.

"I've got a great deal of respect for them. Don't get me wrong. But there's nothing they're doing that I can't do."

Morency averaged 6.8 yards per carry while racking up 918 yards rushing in his sophomore season backing up Tatum Bell — a second-round pick by the Denver Broncos last season. He averaged 5.8 yards last season.

The Florida native said before the Alamo Bowl that he planned to return for his senior season, but he signed with an agent on Jan. 3 — the same day Cowboys coach Les Miles left for LSU and was replaced by offensive coordinator Mike Gundy. He joined cornerback Darrent Williams and offensive lineman Sam Mayes as Oklahoma State's primary draft candidates.

"Whoever selects me is going to get a hell of a running back, a guy that's going to contribute right away," Morency said from Miami, his hometown. "I most definitely have a chip on my shoulder. They're going to have to pick their poison whether you want me on your team or you want to face me, and I don't think you want to face me."

Morency said he had talked to "basically" all of the 32 NFL teams, and met with many in person.

"Can't nobody sell yourself better than you," Morency said. "I had a chance to go face-to-face with the GMs and head coaches and tell them what I could do for their organization. I feel confident that I got my message across.

"Those guys are paying big money for key players, and I'm definitely one of them."

The 25-year-old had only eight receptions in his college career, which didn't begin until after he'd spent three years as an outfielder in the Colorado Rockies' organization. He said Oklahoma State chose not to use his receiving ability, but he's certain he'll be a strong runner, blocker and receiver in the NFL.

"I'm one of the most complete backs in this draft," he said.

Well at least he's confident. I was thinking Fason or Barber but Morency looks like a solid pick. Look what happened to Tennessee when Brown went down and Antowain Smith came in. They were a completely different team. Wells did a pretty decent job when he subbed in but if and when DD goes down this will look like a good pick. I hope he is like DD because he was one of the best backs in the league the second half of last year. It will push him to train even harder and keep the Texans from taking a deep breath every time they hand it off. I just hope Morency has half the burst of Tatum Bell that guy hits the hole and is gone. You have to figure he may be great value since this draft had so many backs a future pro bowler or two were bound to slip into lower rounds. If you were to ever find a jewel RB in the 3rd this was the year. :tiptoe:

I am less than thrilled about the first day of the draft. We had a shot to land Derrick Johnson from Texas to address our linebacker woes. We trade one spot too low to land him. Then we have a golden opportunity to get a PRO BOWL player in David Pollack from Georgia and we go with a guy with some issues in Travis Johnson. He's a good guy, but how can you pass on Pollack?

If the ridiculous theory that getting a running back with the third round pick is susbstantiated by the misguided rationale that Davis got hurt and so did Hollings and Wells is just ok, then why isn't Pollack a logical pick where you have a need at defensive end? Sears is not an every down end and neither is Peek. Pollack could have been a wonderful bookend to Babin.

Running back. It is a thin draft, so you waste a pick on a third string running back? These are the actions of a team who is just trying to add a piece here and there. The Patriots or the Eagles would do this. We can't afford to waste picks like this. Not when we have so MANY other needs. Of all of the possible picks at that slot, I would argue that the only picks that the Texans could have picked there that would have been WORSE would have been selecting a punter, kicker or a quarterback. There is no other position that is a worse pick than running back.

Chris Palmer and this bogus "run first" "pound the rock" mentality will get us nowhere. We do not have the horses up front to move people. We have a talented quarterback and one of the most talented receivers in the game and we don't throw the pill. Look at Detroit... They picked up a THIRD legit threat at wide receiver to go along with Kevin Jones. Which skill people would you rather have? Detroit's or ours? You don't pick up a running back. He's the same back as DD! What's the point?

So now we wait 41 picks to get another player. What are the chances of this player being a starter at one of our need positions? We need starters not backups!

Ugly. Disappointed. Confused.

D. J. doesn't fit our system...enough said.

Pollack would have to convert to an OLB in our system because he is not big enough to play DE in our System. IMHO, Pollack is just not a good fit for the Texans. If you didn't notice, the Texans play a 3/4 defense.

All of the sudden Derrick Johnson doesn't fit our 3-4 system?? Wow, before the draft he was a superstar, and now he's not good enough to fit our 3-4 system. The guy is 6-3, 243 pounds and ran a 4.65 at the combine. Lifted 21 times in his individual workout. Scored a 21 on the wonderlic. Sounds like an ILB to me.
Kansas City mu

I think that drafting a DT in the 1st round was more of a drastic measure than anything and goes against Casserlys wishy washy statements that we draft BPA. If Payne doesn't come along and Walker continues to not perform or is let go, then we have TJ. Thing is, this was mostly a weak DT draft and we reached a bit for one and passed up on a LB that DOES fit our system considering we are gutting the position and have never drafted an ILB to mature in.

He actually ran a 4.5.

What year was Pollack voted to the Pro Bowl? :hmmm:
