Any way we can keep Wells?

Rookie
Well, if we do draft Bush (which is I think the most likely scenario right now IMO), I'd hate to see Wells leave. He's been really great for us and it would be nice to keep him. We could move him to fullback can't we?

We can drop Hollings. Wells is depth at both HB and FB..as well as a big special teams contributor.. if we can keep him, we will. Id say we would even keep him over Morency if we had to make the decision. Luckily we dont.

If they weren't ignorant and extended DD last offseason, I'd keep Wells and cut DD.

Kinda odd how CC said that they waited on Carr's extension because there was no rush on it (on 610 around week 10-11), yet they had DD under contract and extended him.

Wells, Norris and Morency are the only backs we have that should be in the NFL.

Unless Wells gets a very good offer from another team I think he'll be back. His work ethic and special teams play has gained the respect of teammates and even the old coaches. The new coaches should be able to see his contributions as well.

I like players who show that they can get better. I like players who can develop other facets of the game to make themselves more valuable to the team. He counted 662k against the cap last year. I think a 10-15% raise is the right thing to do in the event we make it work from a cap perspective. Hollings will count 699k against the cap in 2006, this will be what Wells' team should be worried about. Norris in my opinion is going no where.

Wells will be back and Kubiak will move him to fullback. Wells does not like this because he wants to make TB money. I believe the Texans will pay him low level TB money and move him to FB. Kubiak's offense utilizes the FB in the run and pass very well, once Wells gets acquainted with the offense I think he will like it because he will have more opportunities to contribute than he had last season.

Agreed, I'd keep Davis, Wells, Morency, and Norris and drop Hollings.

Wells is cheap right now and would be a cheap re-sign, assuming he is not pursued too much in the FA (since I believe he is going to be a FA this year).

We have a lot of RBs, but he is a hard worker and I wouldn't mind him coming back.

I think all the things we like about Wells will get him signed somewhere else. Last year his market wasn't good but considering all he does now, and how serviceable he's been he should catch on somewhere else.

Davis, Wells, Morency...Why do we need another RB?

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. But you may consider changing your signature if that's the way you feel.

this is either the funniest sarcastic joke on the board, or the most ignorant one I have read this year. :stirpot:

Wells isn't good enough to hold DD's jock strap. DD was signed because he is well worth the money and as a 4th round pick was well underpaid for a starting RB. Wells lost the starting job and has been steadily sinking into the abyss of non-contributor since. I laugh at the 'Wells is a great special team player also'. Having watching him in person he is neither great nor even above average on special teams.

Wells is a FA now and you don't see many teams, including the Texans, rushing to sign him for a reason, IMHO. That would be because he is quite simply average to below average, depending on what position you put him at.

DD was a 4th round pick. I think Wells is a good back who does not have the shiftiness of DD. However, Wells is almost always health, whereas, DD will generally miss at least 4 games a year.

Look for Wells to be resigned to a 3-4 year deal worth about 2.5-3.5M all told. That is including signing bonuses. With this type of deal we can allocate so that his cap hit is not much more than what it is now and he will still be making more cash. He will sign it to stay here and no one will just open up the checkbook for him at RB.

You all know we are going to take Bush #1,so that means we will probably shop DD,expect Hollings to be cut or be put on practice Squad, and as far as Wells or Norris I think it will come down to who is the best blocker and who can pick up the BLITZ!!!What do ya"ll think of picking up TO for a 3rd RD pick, maybe he learned his lesson and can be a positive force.:spy:

i don't know if wells would even want to re-sign with us...if we really are pursueing reggie bush like the papers say what reason is there for him to re-sign with us when teams like the packers, saints, cards, raiders, 49ers, steelers, and eagles will all be in the market for a strong power back with some decent speed

Man, you post here every once in a while and the things you say seem to come from the bizarro universe. Just in case, I just want to make sure you knew that Wells wore number 32, not 25.

Are you with us now? Now, go back and watch your tapes, and then tell me what a rotten player Jonathan Wells is. I can't wait.

That is certainly one opinion. I've been told the opposite by players that strap it on and run down the field with him. They want him out there. He brings a competitive fire to the game that fans here seem to want, but dismiss it if it isn't in the player of their choice.

They've also stated that they would rather have Wells in on the plays the RBs are supposed to pass block, because he would either hit the guy hard or miss completely because he goes full speed. They prefer a clean miss to a half-hearted attempt, which has a tendancy to mess up the o-lineman as much as the rusher.

Good points. I was actually hoping we would sign Lorenzo Neal in the offseason because he is a great blocker. Hardly touches the ball, but that's not what he's paid to do. He makes other backs look good (Tomlinson last year). I think Wells could fill this position, and I wonder what it would be like to put Wells in front of DD/RB.

what does this have to do with special teams? Wells is a decent blocker, and your right, it is either a good hit or a very clean miss. Don't know why ANYONE would want a blocker that can't block consistantly but you can listen to all those inside sources all you supposedly have that disagree with that thought, I guess.

uh, who said anything about watching a tape, rafterticket? I was talking about watching him in person, and specifically watching Wells, on purpose to try and see why people are touting his special teams playing. Those times are the one when I have noticed on returns when he is the left side of the wedge for Mathis. Watch the tapes yourself, not sure they show it actually on TV film, but 7 times out of 10 he will miss blocking ANYONE at all. Which is where my impression of him being a special team non-contributor comes from. How in the world can you be part of the blocking wedge and not engage anyone at all and still be considered a GOOD special teams player?

I don't post here as much as I used to, but read this board almost daily. Occasionally I do get in the mood to upgrade some of the more *****ic posts on this board with real football knowledge and my opinions. So I impart some of my wisdom on the board.

But just so you know rafterticket, I have been on this board since its existance. I was on the board that existed before it, and the one before it even. In short I have been on the official sites MB before the team even had a uniform or helmet picked out. So don't get the wrong impression that I am new here or just came onboard this site.

1) Just adding to the discussion

2) I will, thanks. I too am just "adding my wisdom to the board" as you say. As far as supposed sources, anyone here can believe me or not. It doesn't matter to me. I know that some knowledgeable people on this board credit my posts after consideration of things I've said in the past; it's with them in mind that I post.

Dude I am sorry to disagree with you but Wells is a special teams stud. McClain did a piece earlier this year where Marciano stated that Wells is the best special teams player he has ever coached. As he is also at every game and is the special teams coach (the only unit to have some degree of success this past season) I think his opinion is more valuable than most on this board. Wells is also the Texans best pass blocker at the TB position. This is not saying much considering DD could not block someone if his life depended on it.

I like Wells, but I don't necessarily believe that he is a "must have" player. Very few people are re-signed solely based on ST performance. And if he's not a consistent blocker at FB, we truly need someone that can pick up a blitz on a regular basis.

I agree to a certain extent there Double Barrel. I mean.. we could live without Wells.. but he is a safety net that sure is nice to have.

When we need an RB, he is always healthy..and is good enough that our running game doesnt fizzle. When we dont need him at RB.. he is a good backup at FB as well.. and an extra weapon there if we choose to use it.

When we dont need him at either of those spots.. he excels on special teams.

he is the kind of depth that you REALLY want to keep. Players like him are the backbone of a winning team.
