Antwuan Molden

Nice find!:goodpost:

Someone rep this man, I must spread rep......

Good to hear that he has that instinct to look back for the ball. Too many times, specifically Faggins, I'm like turn around for the ball!

Yep...

Also looks like he moves very well and has good feet...I don't know how physical he is, but he's a big guy so I'm expecting him to be able to deliver some blows...

thats one big, composed CB. I'm not sure that he was not rated higher than Aqib Talib on the Texans draft board. great 3rd rd. pick.

time will only tell but Antwaun Molden may be remembered as the best 3rd rd. pick in Texans history to date

Duane Brown.....reach?......perhaps, but only a slight reach. And if he turns into a starter for the long term nobody will remember.

Andwaun Molden......STEAL!

Steve Slaton.......STEAL!

Xavier Adibi......STEAL!

Frank Okam.....STEAL!

You heard it here first: This will turn out to be the best draft the Texans have had to date.

Dang ... I do like the zeal .

Just my opinion, by I think we have two star CB's in the making with Bennett and Molden. I'm heartened by how much passion Dunta is putting into his rehab, but a man's reach usually exceeds his grasp and I don't see him ever being a shutdown corner again. However, his fearless tackling skills will serve him well has a slot cornerback. Thus the framework has been laid for a championship secondary.

The Texans are quietly, methodically building a championship-caliber defense. The D-Line is nearly stacked. They could use a bookend to Mario--- but from Mario to Amobi to Travis Johnson/Frank Okam, you've got the makings of a vaunted line.

With Ryans and Adibi anchoring the linebacking squad, this team is maybe one piece away from suffocating. Add a marauding, blitzing weakside linebacker or another chaos-maker opposite Mario and you've got a Super Bowl contender.

Staying clear of injuries is always a challenge, but without injuries this defense is ready to contend for a playoff spot.

Have I gone off the deep end? Anyone want to argue with me? I've been guilty of being a homer in the past and letting my enthusiasm cloud my perception, but I don't think anything I've said here is fantasy....

I'm not ready to give Moulden a liberal future just yet. I want to see how he responds to a WR actually putting his hands on Moulden. Small time colleges aren't exactly what I would call solid opposition for a man being primed to dominate in the NFL. I don't know. I sure like what I see of him. I sure do!

But let's see how he reacts first.

Absolutely right. Molden hasn't played a down in the NFL yet and already I'm calling him a shutdown corner. There's my homerism showing. But isn't it nice that the Texans already have a track record of taking a 4th round corner and turning him into a high quality starter in a very short period of time. But with all the enthusiasm regarding our new draft picks, our new free agents, and our new addition of a legendary offensive line coach (Gibbs) it's somehow been forgotten that we have a former winning NFL head coach---who previously won 5 Super Bowl rings with the 49ers---now coaching our defensive backfield. I'm talking about Ray Rhodes, of course. What nature bestowed on Molden with size and speed is what top-tier corners like D-Rob would kill for. Now all he has to do is listen to his coaches and play.

Valid point. I think we'll see some flashes from Molden this year while he's slowly worked into the lineup, but I expect a big jump from year 1 to year 2 similar to my thinking on Jacoby's progress.

Hope you're right about Jacoby. I think pre-season was too easy for him he might have lost a lot of confidence when he found out it really wasn't going to be that easy. Hopefully he'll work hard and get get into a comfort zone of consistent production. All the receivers should be required to follow Andre Johnson around and copy everything he does....

If DRob wasnt injured, Id be tempted to try Molden at free safety. He has the size, strength, and speed for it...

I'd be happier seeing just the opposite. I think Molden's size, strength, and speed are what every defensive coordinator dreams about when he dreams of perfect corners. Meanwhile, I've seen some excellent free safeties with D-Rob's size, speed, and headhunter mentality.

that could work too... We definitely should have our best defensive backs on the field as much as possible, and DRob or Molden would probably be an upgrade at FS.

I knew he had all the measuable but was actually suprised to here LZ mention today he actullay outperformed DRC in all tests at the combine except the 40 and ran only a few tenths of a second slower in the 40. SOunds like a gem that just got overlooked by others due to the size of his college and the fact he did not play in the senior bowl.

I don't know about that..........that 2006 draft was pretty good.

Mario Williams
DeMeco Ryans
Charles Spencer (shame he got hurt, this draft would be untouchable if he didn't)
Eric Winston
and
Owen Daniels.

^ THAT was one hellava draft.

Don't forget Wali Lundy

211lbs and ran a 4.45. wooow.

The kid looks special, not just a workout warrior. I expect him to contribute early, about in the 2nd quarter of the seasons(4-8 games in the season, when I expect him to start or impact games.)

Plus the 7th round pick that was traded for Kevin Walters, our current #2 wideout.

Moral of the story being that we are starting to get our drafts right and getting quality depth and strength of talent.

Long may the strong draft classes continue.

I'd rather keep Dunta, Bennett and Molden at CB. Molden is unproven but at worse I think he will be a good nickel.

FS is likely going to be stacked next year - Ellison, Mays, Pegues, Moore and Rolle. That's a mighty deep well. A ballhawk center fielder would help tremendously though and most of those guys could naturally fill that role.

That wasn't true. Cromartie was ahead of Molden in every category other than bench press & 20 yard shuttle. But, they were in the same ballpark in just about everything.

40 yard Sprint - DRC (4.33) - AM (4.39)
Bench Press - DRC (18) - AM (23)*
Vertical Jump - DRC (38.5")* - AM (37.5)
Broad Jump - DRC (10'11")* - AM (10'9")
3 Cone - DRC (6.74)* - AM (6.85)
20 Yard Shuttle - DRC (?) - AM (4.14)
60 Yard Shuttle - DRC (11.06)* - AM (11.33)

* indicates top performance for position

very similar prospects and they both have the same questions marks....'cept that we don't have to pay near as much of our cap for Molden. I'm really starting to like this pick....well, at least till I see him play. :pirate:

Right. I wasn't crazy about the Texans taking Cromartie in the 1st. Though talented, he was a risky pick that high. Taking a similar talent, with similar experience, in Molden in the 3rd was not as risky. I think we will look back on this draft and be pretty happy it fell the way it did.

Not to sound like an ass but this concerned me:

Kidney - DRC (1) - AM (2)*

I pretty much feel like Vinny and Lucky. DRC was too risky for my tastes. More than once in other threads, I said he was my last choice out of anyone mentioned at #18. I saw one "expert" say that his play never came close to living up to his measuarables. I don't generally like taking workout warriors in rd 1.

Granted, Brown fits that description somewhat, and is not an ultra safe pick either, but I think DRC's floor is lower than Brown's, and if I am going to take a chance at swinging for the fences, I would rather do it with a LT than a CB. JMO.

Well said.

Interesting to check back at this interview from February from the Texans. The Texans seemed to be trying to temper expectations.

Basically, John McClain said that the Texans were going to pick CB first because the secondary was a dire need. Then Jon Hoke does this interview on TexansTV right after talking about the combine:

Brooke Bentley: Were there any other defensive backs that stood out or you felt like had memorable performances at the Combine?

Jon Hoke: I thought a young man from Iowa, (Charles) Godfrey, had a very good workout. I thought he had an impressive workout. There was a young man from Eastern Kentucky, I think (Antwaun) Molden is his name; he had an impressive workout. You look at (Josh) Barrett from Arizona State, a safety who looked very good. You know, there’s a list of guys that you could go on and on about, but I think there were guys that really helped themselves with the Combine workout.

Brooke Bentley: Well, of course, with Dunta Robinson recovering from two surgeries, the Texans would love to draft someone in the first round, but let’s say we draft someone in the third or fourth. Do you think that this talent is deep enough that we would get someone good in the third or fourth round?

Jon Hoke: I think the talent is deep enough. I think there’s guys that have pieces; they may not be a whole yet. Probably similar to Fred Bennett, who had a lot of pieces that you liked, and if you could ever get it all together that you could probably have a very good football player. And I think there’s guys like this in this draft down in the third round, down in the fourth round, that have some pieces and have some things that you like as a football player that if they could ever get it all together and you could get them all coached the right way and taught the right way, then I think you can get a lot of upside from some of those guys down there.

So basically, right after McClain says CB has to be first, Hoke gets on TexansTV and says nice things about the guys that are expected to go high, but also says that good cornerbacks can be found lower in this particular draft.

As an aside, it is interesting to see that in the first three years of Kubiak, the Texans have valued the lines the highest as being semi-worth the first round money (not that many rookies can actually be worth their money).

Especially because our time with Alex Gibbs is likely going to be of limited duration due to Gibbs' age.

Richard Smith mentioned that Molden beat Cromartie in 6 of 7 track meets while in college. That to me is more impressive than the combine numbers, that shows me he can outperform Cromartie in a competitive atmosphere instead of just against a stopwatch.

What I found most intersting about the video profile is when he was asked about his best attribute he didn't see it as a chance to boast about his playing ability but to promote his character as a good teammate.

Another Texan you want to root for.

And he has great taste in music... Lupe Fiasco.

Damn you LZ, damn you and your faulty information!

What I find interesting is Smith finds small college prospects (not that they have panned out yet ) like Molden and Jacoby who are speed guys ... WR/DB .

CC on the other hand picked guys like Wand OL and Babin OLB out of small schools . I wonder if a speed guy has a better chance of making the jump than a front seven player ?

Nope it is drafting the right players for the right system. It is also about coaching the players you draft up and having the ability to teach them and of course the players have to want to learn. There are a lot of small school players at other positions who succeed with other teams, it just did not happen with the Texans because of the dingle berries who were coaching them and the turd drafting the wrong players.

Those "speed" guys are usually guys that were talented enough to play D-1A ball, but they were undersized coming out of high school because their bodies hadn't developed all the way.

Thus, they weren't recruited the way they should have been.

Yes but the combine numbers were very simular to two who went higher and are going to be paid a heck of a lot more. Never seen him play but if he has it between the ears and the jump isn't too big for him, he should transition nicely. All he has to do is hold the fort for nine games, If Robinson is going to make it back in '09 at all.

He will get beat. He is a rookie and everyone will go after him...every game.

Does anyone know how comparable Molden is to Fred Bennett out of college?

very similar, big cb's, smooth in transition & not afraid to lay a hat in run support. of the two Molden is projected slightly higher so thats good news because Bennett proved last year he belongs in this league. Ourlads rating service supports this thesis giving Bennett a 7.75 grade. Antwaun Molden gets a 7.84 has better long speed with slightly bigger frame. both can play press corner :)
