Andrew Luck, shoulder surgery

Cnnnd posted this earlier in this thread http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...-the-price-for-letting-andrew-luck-play-hurt/

Probably expresses the Doc's views. Just guessing.

:coffee:
I've posted here on such short-sightedness for years. Playing through non-structural injuries not uncommonly extend them to structural injuries. Playing through structural injuries virtually always extends the degree of injury, and can make a significant negative prognosis impact upon the injury when it is finally properly addressed. And the aforementioned scenarios do not even take into account additional compensatory injuries that can result from being short-sighted.

Colts target training camp for Andrew Luck
May 11, 2018, 9:52 AM EDT

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. Actually, you have heard this one before. And you’re about to hear it again.

The Colts are targeting a training-camp return from quarterback Andrew Luck from his shoulder injury.

Last year, the Colts seemed to be resigned to the possibility that Luck may not be ready to participate in training camp as the offseason program concluded. It was regarded as a surprise at the time, and some regarded our effort to read between the lines as #clickbait and/or #fakenews. Obviously, it was neither. (For a change.)

This year, the target continues to be training camp.

“[The] timeline’s good,” Colts G.M. Chris Ballard said during a recent visit to PFT Live. “You know, he’s actually not even throwing a football. He’s doing everything we’re asking him to do. He’s got a program specifically laid out that puts his timeline to be back at training camp. He didn’t want to skip a step. I don’t know if he skipped a step last year, but I think he felt the pressure of coming back. Not rushing; I don’t want to say rushing. But, you know, he felt the pressure of coming back. And he couldn’t get back right. This year, whenever he sat down with me in early January he said, ‘Look, I don’t want to skip a step. I want to do this the right way.’ And he’s doing that. He looks the best I’ve seen him. His body’s in great shape. His arm feels really good. He’s just taking it step by step. We’re looking at training camp as our target date right now.”

Plenty of people won’t believe this, given the history of statements from the Colts that have ended up being not believable. Does Ballard have concerns that there’s so much doubt about the veracity of the team’s statements about Luck? THE REST OF THE STORY

I don't remember what Luck looked like pre-injury anymore. It feels like an eternity since he's played.

Colts quarterback Andrew Luck is still rehabing his throwing shoulder from the surgery he had in January 2017 on a torn right labrum, and general manager Chris Ballard told Pro Football Talk that the three-time Pro Bowler should be ready for training camp.

Ballard said Luck has still not thrown a regular-sized football and he understands people questioning the quarterback's road to recovery, according to Pro Football Talk.

Say what ? "Not thrown a regular-sized football", now how bizarre is that ? Well just what-sized football is the boy throwing ?

Odd thing is I can pull a bow. Letting one down hurts.

Lol, we're getting old, I feel it every birthday..just had one 2 days ago.

My shoulder is F'd up too. I think I have a tear in my rotator cuff. Hurts all the time, but hurts like hell when I try to lift anything or lift my arm above my head.

I'm stubborn though, so I've been tolerating it. I'm not a good patient at all.

I had shoulder surgery in 2005. Partially torn rotator cuff and bone spurs under the tendon. WORST freakin pain I've ever experienced. Slept in a recliner for 4 weeks. Couldn't brush my teeth. Just completely worthless for about 5 weeks. And I've got a pretty high tolerance for pain.
Avoid surgery if you can.

How was the shoulder after the surgery though, because I'm getting tired of the nagging pain and loss of upwards strength. I can deal with pain, I just had to go through chemo. (Cancer free..but they told me that the first time..reason why I decided to take the chemo this time)

What is the shoulder like post operation and recovery?

That's great news, congrats man !

After rehab and time the shoulder was fine. I'm an avid golfer and back then I was still playing lots of softball. So I had lots of concerns going in to the surgery. Will the shoulder be the same? Will I be able to throw a ball? Swing a club? etc. Surgery was in Feb., I was back out on the course in late August. I just had a scope though, probably different with having to get cut open. The rehab was a pain. Lots of it really. Once I started back into my routine the shoulder was fine. Of course, sore as crap the first few times out, but nothing out of the ordinary.

I'm starting to experience some of the same feeling in the same shoulder now. Surgery was 2005, so father time and probably some arthritis setting in.

Congrats on being cancer free! I'm 20 years free, in 10 days.

Mine feels like Snap Crackle Pops. Ex-wife is "it hurts when you roll." "It's crunchy." That's a technical term I think.

You have described my right shoulder since last July when I injured it....walking a couple of dogs my daughter was watching. I'm a right side sleeper so sleep has been fairly interrupted for almost a year. I'm finally getting an MRI on Friday after many visits to the Dr and Physical Therapy. I was asking for an MRI right away but they wanted to follow procedure first. I work out daily and deal with the pain....it sucks b/c certain exercises make me feel as though there's a hot knife being pushed into my shoulder. My wife keeps telling me it's a Frozen Shoulder. She went through that mess for almost 5 years between both shoulders. I'm going to keep up my personal rehab regiment until the Dr tells me otherwise. By the way, go Texans!

Tell me how that MRI goes please, I'm curious. :)

I had a complete rotator cuff tear while attempting unassisted human flight. As Ron White would say, I flew all the way to the accident site, using my right arm as landing gear. I had a mini-open anchorless repair that feels more or less completely normal after 5 years.

Oliver Luck: Andrew is “fine”
June 5, 2018, 12:42 PM EDT

Named the first XFL Commissioner on Tuesday, former NFL (and West Virginia University) quarterback Oliver Luck is making the media rounds. In a 20-minute conversation with PFT, which will debut later today in the #PFTPM podcast, Oliver Luck was asked about his son, Colts quarterback Andrew Luck.

Asked how Andrew is doing, Oliver said he would provide a one-word answer: “Fine.”

And perhaps all that that implies.

I reacted by saying “fine” could be taken in several different ways, and then I asked how surprised Oliver Luck is that Andrew hasn’t been able to play in the 17 months since supposedly routine shoulder surgery. Oliver made it clear that he’s not willing or able to discuss the situation.

Yeah, that sounds like fine means "critical" to me. LoL!

Luck threw what was reported as his first using an NFL football. What I have been able to ascertain is that it was a collegiate football (but same specs:))..............and basically straight to one target while in a relatively stationary position........and no further than 10 yds.

Yup, and looked to be pretty low velocity also. At least he is finally chucking the " duke".

Honestly, the biggest takeaway/part of this video for me: When Luck catches the ball 1-handed. Zero hesitancy or concern. If he wasn’t fully confident, he would nor could ever do that. The move is fully reactionary and not measured. Good for 12, and good for the #NFL. #colts

The catch Orlovsky was speaking of:

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/video/andrew-luck-throws-at-minicamp/

..................Just shut up Dan, if he could not lift his arm to shoulder level (his elbow never even reach the shoulder level) for a powder puff throw like that after all this time, he would need to retire right on the spot.

It's funny how many reports of Luck throwing a football now makes it a point to highlight that the ball is a college football, not an NFL football. Some sources emphasize that these are smaller than NFL balls, making you believe it is significant. For anyone interested, the differences between the 2 balls are negligible (within the ranges of tolerance).:

The football used in NCAA contest can be slightly smaller than the Balls used in the NFL. The balls used in the NCAA also have 2 white stripes.

The NFL Rule :

The Ball must be a “Wilson,” hand selected, bearing the signature of the Commissioner
of the league,...
The ball shall be made up of an inflated (12 1/2 to 13 1/2 pounds) rubber bladder enclosed
in a pebble grained, leather case (natural tan color) without corrugations of any kind.
It shall have the form of a prolate spheroid and the size and weight shall be: long axis,
11 to 11 1/4 inches; long circumference, 28 to 28 1/2 inches; short circumference, 21
to 21 1/4 inches; weight, 14 to 15 ounces.

The NCAA Rule:

The ball shall meet the following specifications:
a. New or nearly new. (A nearly new ball is a ball that has not been altered and retains the properties and qualities of a new ball.)
b. Cover consisting of four panels of pebble-grained leather without corrugations other than seams.
c. One set of eight equally spaced lacings.
d. Natural tan color.
e. Two 1-inch white stripes that are three to three and one-quarter inches from the end of the ball and located only on the two panels adjacent to the laces.
f. Conforms to maximum and minimum dimensions and shape indicated in the accompanying diagram.
g. Inflated to the pressure of 12-1/2 to 13-1/2 pounds per square inch(psi).
h. Weight of 14 to 15 ounces. The short circumference is 20 3/4" to 21 1/4"
The long circumference is 27 3/4" to 28 1/2". The long axis is 10 7/8 to 11 7/16.

It was actually a high school football
not sure if that really makes a big diff

Reports are all over. NCAA college ball.
I initially heard it was a high school ball on ESPN's NFL Live (they were getting their info from their Colts rep on the scene) and then I found that link from the local Indy paper

we all know how one media outlet gets it wrong and the rest just repeat it.

But like Doc said, he wasn't really throwing hard or far or that often.

So no big whoop, unless you're a Colts fan.

According to this site, it doesn't really matter... weight difference maybe
Weight is the same with both balls

Again, HS, college and NFL football specs are essentially all within the same tolerances. It isn't until you get to youth footballs that the size decreases (as does the weight......12.8 oz.).

.

Bottom line, for me anyway, goes to what Doc said; he didn't throw long, didn't throw much, probably didn't throw too hard.

For Andrew Luck, It All Re-Starts Here

By Albert Breer
June 18, 2018

It received less attention than the dog-and-pony show with the smaller football on Tuesday, but on Wednesday, Colts quarterback Andrew Luck threw an actual NFL football. In front of everyone. Media included. And I’m told he did it again on Friday, while working out without cameras and reporters around to recount every one of his paces.

This is how Luck is going to have it for the next few months, and no one needs to apologize for the scrutiny. He’s a generational talent who carried the Colts—with a roster gutted to start the post-Peyton Manning era—to the playoffs in 2012, a playoff win in ’13 and a trip to the AFC championship game in ’14. He’s the NFL’s closest player to a LeBron James-level prospect this decade. And he was well on his way to realizing his potential like James has before he messed up his shoulder in 2015, and made it worse by playing through the injury for almost two years.

So yes, the attention is justified—Luck returning to the practice field and throwing was easily the biggest story coming out of NFL minicamps this week. And that’s where we’re going to start this week’s MMQB. We’ll get to why there are more holdouts this year, we’ll talk to Packers coach Mike McCarthy about his different handling of minicamp, and new Carolina OC Norv Turner about working with Cam Newton, and we’ll bounce around the league to find some guys who built up steam this spring and will hit training camp with a running start.

But let’s dive into Luck. Here’s four things I know…

1. Luck is deeper into his rehab without a major hiccup than he has been at any point since the initial procedure in January 2017. Last year he never got past the five-and-a-half month mark. One difference: He’s been more deliberate with his return to health this time around.

2. He’s pulled out all the stops, including going to Los Angeles to work with a mechanics coach and traveling all the way to Amsterdam for treatment, seeking alternative ways to train. Listening to the QB talk makes it sound like he found something that works for him.

3. The upper reaches of the Colts brass privately have heard the tone we all did publicly last week, which is different from what Luck’s tone had been previously. The quarterback admitted he was lying to himself last year. And while he knows that getting back to throwing on a more regular basis will lead to soreness, he’s confident it will be just that—soreness, rather than pain. “The pain is gone, and it’s going to stay that way,” he said to reporters at minicamp. “My body doesn’t revolt, in a sense, to new things I ask.”

4. Luck’s injury is being handled like any other injury would be in the spring and summer—with the utmost care, given the acknowledgement that no one is playing a real game this weekend ... or will for another dozen weekends. To that end, I’m told the plan is to give Luck days off in training camp, and monitor reps to simulate what his regular-season regimen will be, so he’ll be conditioned for Week 1 when he gets there.

Here‘s the flip side: Luck hasn’t done anything in any sort of team setting (11-on-11, etc.) yet—in front of media or not—besides stretching and the QB/center exchange, and that leaves just the six weeks between the start of training camp and the opener for him to re-acclimate. There hasn’t been a breakthrough moment or even much talk internally of where Luck stands physically for the staff to chew on—instead, just a call for patience.

And last year, there were no fewer than four setbacks along the way, based on what the team was saying. The Colts said he’d be ready for camp, but he wasn’t. Then they said he’d be ready for Week 1, but he wasn’t. Then they kept him off the PUP list, implying they believed he would play within the season’s first six weeks, and he didn’t. And then after the team had him throwing in October, he was shut down.

THE REST OF THE STORY

The media are trying to say that Luck will have a true test Saturday against...............Saturday "will test his progress against one of the game’s top corners, new 49er Richard Sherman"...............who will just now be coming back from an Achilles rupture suffered last Nov.:kitten:

you were expecting an accurate assessment from the 'marketing dept.'...?
Did you expect this from NFLN?
"This Saturday... Andrew 'hasn't-thrown-a-pass-over-20-yds-all-preseason' Luck battles Richard "we-aren't-sure-he-can-run-anymore" Sherman. Tune in and see if either one of these guys can be a shell of what they used to be!"
:spit:

Watching the Colts game at the same as ours, so haven't seen 100% of the snaps, but I haven't seen Luck throw a pass more than 10 yards yet.

Luck is now dealing with a foot injury..........of course, the Colts say it is "minor." It occurred when he was sacked. This is the last thing that Luck needs to protect himself from re-injuring his shoulder. With his Ol, being able to run for his life this season will be a necessity...........therefore, healthy feet to carry him from danger will be a must.:chef:

Luck has completed only 2 of 9 passes 10 yds or longer.

*************************************************************************************

Concerns with Luck
The Colts are now 1-2 and somehow exceeding expectations: they had chances to beat the Bengals in Week 1, manhandled the Redskins on the road in Week 2 and hung tight with the Eagles in Week 3. But there are some red flags relating to the quarterback.

First, there's the matter of Andrew Luck not stretching the field at all. Here's his Next Gen Stats passing map from Week 3:

screen-shot-2018-09-23-at-9-36-28-pm.png

via NFL.com
Combine it with his throws in Weeks 1 and 2 and Luck now has a total of two completed passes more than 20 yards down the field this season. The Colts offense isn't asking him to stretch the field a ton -- Frank Reich's offense is clearly predicated on getting the ball out quick, and Luck should thank him for that. He only has eight attempts of more than 20 yards or more on the season.

Asked after the game if he was bothered by Brissett coming in, Luck said "no," because, via The Athletic's Stephen Holder, he thinks Brissett is stronger.

"Jacoby has a stronger arm than I do," Luck said. "It's sort of what I see in practice. And obviously coach Reich thinks that as well. I'll keep working on getting my arm to where maybe it can make an 80-yard throw from the minus-30 [yard line]. But I have no qualms with that decision."

This is a refreshing level of honesty from a quarterback in a league that does not value honesty. Luck admitted he didn't even know if he could make that throw before his surgery.

I'm sure this is going to become a "thing," even though I don't think it should be. Here's what Andrew Luck said re: Jacoby Brissett being asked to attempt the Hail Mary throw: pic.twitter.com/E3iv4SMgzL

— Stephen Holder (@HolderStephen) September 23, 2018
As someone who is holding a "Luck leads the league in passing yards" ticket and hoping it hits (30-1), this is very concerning. But here's a hot take: this was a smart move by Reich. Luck spent the offseason and preseason on a very strict and programmed strength plan building his arm back up. Going out and attempting an extremely low percentage throw -- that literally any strong human with a knowledge of how to hold a football could make -- does not make a ton of sense.

The Colts have someone coaching their team more concerned with keeping their quarterback healthy for the long haul than trying to steal an early season victory. That's a net win for the Colts.
