2024 TRAINING CAMP DISCUSSION THREAD

CJ definitely plays poorly in rain. That’s becoming clear and may be his Achilles heel. Hopefully, given time he will get better at it.

Related to RB’s I’ve consumed a ton of data from those there. Bottom line, I hear a lot of good things. Mixon has a relatively minor injury and that’s giving DP a chance to take the lead and he looks great. Dare is Dare. Not a great back, but they love his ST contributions so he likely makes the team.

That’s 3 right there. It’s not a guarantee they keep a 4th but I’m betting they do. Cam Akers is a vet with major injury history. British Brooks has looked good. Same with JJ Taylor. Opposite body types. Both of these guys are recent UDFA’s. One or both could make the PS but 53 is unlikely.

That leaves Akers and 6th round Rooke Jawhar Jordan. I’ve also heard good things about Jordan. I think the 4th spot comes down to Akers or Jordan and considering injury history and the draft investment, I think they go with the young buck Jordan…assuming they keep 4.

Thnx. I have an odd style following camp news. I really don’t get excited about individual plays on any given day. Instead I put more weight on any player whose name keeps popping up most days but I haven’t seen that with any of our RB group yet. I have at about every other position however.

According to Jon Harris the defense yesterday clearly won the day. From his camp reports so far Agim is having a solid camp. Either Harris doesn’t focus on the RB’s or they haven’t really stood out. Also it seems CJ really struggles with a wet ball.
I remember talking to Warren Moon about this while treating his roommate. He said that in the rain QBs tend to change what they shouldn't and not change what they should. They tend to try to grip the ball stronger than they usually would............and that that would affect accuracy. They also tend to hold the ball classically with the fingers without the use of the palm.................this gives less security. He said that it is best to go against the norms and have the ball rest on the fingers AND the palm, not cock back much and use the wrist more to flick and actually push the ball forward.

He also said shorter quick throws were more advantageous...................because the DBs would have disadvantageous rain problems of their own with quick direction changes and stops.

Sigh, so many responses..
So little time

Any news from todays camp? Best thing so far is no major injuries. A few guys with some minor issues but knock on wood…so far so good.

Interesting note on the WRs from the article:
WIDE RECEIVER

LOCKS: Nico Collins, Tank Dell, Stefon Diggs
NEAR LOCKS: John Metchie
OTHERS: Noah Brown, Robert Woods, Ben Skowronek, Xavier Hutchinson, Steven Sims

Typically, a team carries five, maybe six receivers. If the Texans roll with six, which I think they will, I would guess that Collins, Dell, Diggs, Metchie, and Brown, if all healthy, make the team, and that multiple guys out of Woods, Skowronek (who they traded for), Hutchinson (who showed promise as a rookie in 2023), and Sims (their best return guy) will be on the street. Deep group.

Stroud's foot was not stepped..........he stepped on someone's foot. When he was examined in the Blue tent, his foot and ankle was wrapped. I will feel better when the 48 hr peak swelling period is come and gone and Stroud is still OK.

Is Laremy Tunsil declining? Not according to this outlet

While some think Laremy Tunsil is done as an elite left tackle, NFL.com doesn't agree.

Jul 26, 2024

Laremy Tunsil has been everything the Houston Texans had hoped for and more. A four-time Pro Bowler, the 29-year-old left tackle has done a stupendous job blocking the blindside of every quarterback who's come on the team since Tunsil's arrival in 2019. Now, on the verge of 30, Tunsil is looking at a career that has him competing for the title of "best linemen in Texans history" and possibly a Hall of Fame jacket on his current trajectory.

Yet, it's worth noting that his play declined in 2023 just a tad. It may be due to mounting injuries that he tried to play through, after all, he did miss three games. It may also be due to a decline in his abilities as he ages and pushes through injuries that sap him of key attributes. It's unclear if his brief decline in 2023 was a brief moment in time or something to be worried about shortly.

For those who believe Tunsil has a lot left in the tank, you're not the only one. The folks at the NFL Network ranked Tunsil at No. 71 in the NFL. He's still seen as a Pro Bowl-caliber player and one of the better left tackles in the league. Considering his play in 2023 wasn't what we're used to, we can understand why some would feel that Tunsil stepped back.

We're not so sure that's the case going forward, however. Tunsil has shown himself to be a quality player over the years and considering a lot of tackles play well into their 30s without letting up, we're not so quick to believe that Tunsil is declining either. We think he's still one of the better tackles in the league, and with an entire offseason under his belt free from injuries, he may be able to show his elite-level skillset once again.

I have not read or heard of anyone thinking Tunsil is on the decline. I think he will be able to finish out his contract as a pro bowl candidate each year barring injury.

Aaron Wilson reported that will Anderson did not report for practice today. Supposedly no sign of injury.

Jon Harris said CJ finished practice after his foot injury. Even made some nice throws. He also was raving about Cam’s size and power. He also said Stingley may be having the best camp of any Texan. Juice doing some good stuff also.

After thinking about it and hearing Pep Hamilton talk about his experience with the new kick off return, I'm fine with having starters on kick off return. Even under the old rule I wasn't against the occasional starter being out there especially if they were capable of making big plays on special teams.

But now under the new rules I'm even more onboard with it because of the big play potential that's there. I agree with what someone said earlier in that it could be looked at as the first offensive play of the series.

And even if teams start kicking the ball out of the endzone and conceding giving the other team the ball on the 30, then no harm no foul anyways as whatever starter is out there wouldn't be involved in any action anyways. But the only ways teams will concede giving the ball up on the 30 is if the risk is not worth the reward...And having someone dangerous back returning kicks is one way to have them believe kicking the ball in the "return zone" is not worth it.

Probably only me but I think a starting DB, WR or RB would be more risk-to-reward significant at their position compared to returning.

Seems way too early to say CJ plays poorly in the rain lol. We have seen what 1 training camp practice and 1 game in the rain. The game being a game where he was playing one of the best defenses in the NFL with Noah Brown and Robert Woods (2023 version) as his top targets

Now my earlier comment notwithstanding have not heard much at all about CJ this camp. Will have to ask one of the Texans content creators on Twitter who go everyday what they think

We also have the “Deiter” incident to note.

Interesting note from John Harris, it seems they are trying Nick Broeker out at tackle in camp. Not sure if it’s a full time move or just cross training, but if he can show to be competent at OG/OT then he stands a better chance of making the team. He was added after preseason last year and stayed at RG, the one position where the starter played every game on the OL. Interested to see Broeker this preseason.

9. Admittedly, I wasn't exactly sure how Nick Broeker would fare out at tackle after spending most of last year penciled in as a guard, but he's held up much better than I expected. He did well to answer the inside counter move of DE Ali Gaye and slow down the former LSU pass rusher.

2. DT Khalil Davis does a great job getting on a guard's edge and really jetting upfield when he does. OG Kenyon Green did a solid job sliding vertically to keep Davis from turning back into the QB. On the second rep, though, Davis was able to slide under Green's outside arm and get to the quarterback on his second rush.

[This is what my concern has been with Green...................he can vertically contain his man face on,, but his left shoulder is compromised in handling the rush from the outside (his left), and his meniscus injuries further compromise his lateral movements to contain the rush.]

5. I don't know if y'all have seen OT Tytus Howard this summer but dude is put together about as well as I've seen any of the Texans OL in the past decade. When I tell you that Hunter was able to lift Tytus off the ground with his bull rush, believe me when i say that was SOME KIND OF IMPRESSIVE. Those two have gone AT IT this camp and Hunter has hit Tytus with some wicked stuff from his bag of tricks, but Hunter hasn't really gone much to that bull rush. But he did on that one rep and it showed how his pure power complements his large bag of pass rush tricks really well.

[This is only one of my concerns regarding Howard...................his "body transformation" with weight loss from 322 lbs to 315 lbs..............weight loss accompanied by strength loss.]

I don’t think the team keeps both Okudah/Henderson. Especially with Lassiter apparently having already beaten out both for that starting outside CB job opposite Stingley. I wouldn’t be surprised if a less heralded guy like Kris Boyd, who has played primarily ST as a backup CB makes the team over one of them. Boyd has similar measurables and has proven to be a core ST player with the Vikings.

Especially Henderson since he appears to have been injured and unable to participate in camp much. Can’t make the club from the tub.

Okudah has played very little ST in his NFL career. 6 snaps total!

The most Henderson has played is 23% of snaps one season in Carolina.

Boyd has played over 50% of ST snaps for the teams he’s been on in all but one season (43% but he was a spot starter on defense that season). He played over 70% ST snaps in two of his four seasons with the Vikings.

Damn. WR4 “At best” is not a great endorsement. “At worst” would’ve been a hell of an endorsement. Oh well. We’ll see if he makes him eat his words.
Which of Diggs, Collins or Tank would you put below Metchie? I am hoping he earns his contract the next two years and that will please me.

He’s basically talking about how deep this team is at that position. Diggs, Collins, Tank and then Metchie or a few others. Brown and Hutchinson could be mentioned at that 4th spot as well.

As if a tattoo doesn’t already have enough ink. I believe I would have added a couple more chapters to the book before I would ink the author.
It wouldn't be tattooed on top of the marker from the signature.

The artist would make a stencil of the ink from the marker then make the tattoo on top of that.

I certainly agree with your second sentence though.
