2024 TRAINING CAMP DISCUSSION THREAD

Stupid justification comment when going after one's own teammate like that:

Texans defensive backs coach Dino Vasso spoke after practice with reporters, talking about Stingley’s tenacity.

"He’s a competitive kid," he said, via the Houston Chronicle. "He relishes the one-on-one moment, and I think that’s the biggest thing for a corner. You can’t teach that as a coach, and he has that inherently, so that’s a good trait to have."

What you appear to be overlooking, if cut after 2024 season with a designated post June 1st cut,
2025 dead ~9 m with $14 .2 m savings but ALL remaining GTD money escalates into 2026. Approx $12.2 million dead cap.

I discussed this in a thread somewhere during 2023 season. If Titus Howard cannot be a quality starter; we can use the cap space later this season or in 2025 which would be a huge advantage.

I find the spotrac information easier to read than over the cap.
Just click on year of contract you wish to move a player.
Which I think is fine and doesn't make him uncuttable next season, which is essentially my point.

Why is the national media picking up on the Stingley - Schultz scrap?
Because everyone is football starved and there's barely anything football related to discuss.

They love trying to act like practice scraps are more than what they are.

Sounds like RB JJ Taylor, at only 5’6”, does something notable at every practice. He’s been sounding like the Tank Dell of the RB’s. Quick, shifty and explosive. Not sure who on the D he’s been playing against but I want to see this guy in preseason.

Them actually celebrating Stingley’s cheap shot on Schultz doesn’t surprise me. Especially after all the ridiculous, sick, and flat out disgusting s*** that has taken place in society the past 3-4 years. Had he done that to say…Diggs, Collins, Dell, or Mixon the coaching staff would’ve been singing ima different tune. Stingley literally charged at Schultz while his back was towards him. That’s a p**** move!

Much ado about nothing. One week in, guys get tired of the same guys and tempers flare. Back in the day there were fights and scuffles near daily during two a days. It’s practically like the pillsbury dough boy out there now compared to the old school stuff we had 3 or 4 decades ago. As long as it’s not out of hand..move on. Sting showing some juice is a good thing - he just needs to redirect it a little bit. I’m sure coach talked to him. Relax and enjoy the show!

Back in the day, with very long 2-a-days (and many times more which we don't talk about), teams in TC only had their own teammates to direct their frustrations against.

Joint practices did not come to be until 13 years ago. But since then, their numbers have been quickly on the rise. This year only the Chiefs and Raiders have declined to schedule them. To try to compare frustration levels and intolerance back in the day and their almost unlimited work level...............with today's "Pillsbury dough boy" regimen................there is no excuse for not being able to contain oneself from trying to hurt one's own teammate, in lieu of waiting to "open up" against a joint practice or preseason game opponent. Historically there have been enough TC injuries, without unnecessarily adding to those numbers.

Next time Stingley or any other Texans player finds need to let out his frustration, here's a safer yet equally effective outlet.

This is called The Thorn Technique.

The sixth practice for the Houston Texans' 2024 training camp took place on Wednesday morning, and it looked and felt a whole lot like the practice the day before. Like Tuesday, the Texans were in full pads, and the fans filled all the bleacher seats. Like Tuesday, there was some heavy rain prior to practice, but the rain held off once 9 a.m. rolled around, and the team practiced amidst very moderate temperatures.

The offense had its moments, the defense had its moments, the highlights of which we will get to in a moment, but the big spectacle out at camp on Wednesday — our first skirmish of the preseason! Texan on Texan violence! Let's start there....

Tempers boil over
WIth a team that packs this much energy, with this many alpha males on a football field at the same time, it was bound to happen — on Wednesday, we got our first fight of the 2024 Texans training camp. It stemmed from a Stefon Diggs catch and run, where safety Jimmie Ward brought Diggs to the ground, which is a no-no in training camp. Some moderate hitting is okay, that's why there are pads on, but going to the ground augments the chances of injury exponentially. So the offense and defense pushed and shoved in a 20-headed scrum for about a minute. Once the two sides separated, then CB Derek Stingley went back in and gave TE Dalton Schultz a cheap shot from behind. It was quite the spectacle, and if I had to guess, other than the chances that Schultz could have been hurt by Stingley's negligence, DeMeco Ryans probably loved it! He enjoys appropriate chippy-ness!

This is about as good as I can do for video of the skirmish, as the media is not allowed to film anything after the first 20 minutes or so of practice. So we all rely on fan video!

Nick Caserio speaks on SportsRadio 610
The Texans EVP and General Manager, who's heading into his fourth season in that role, joined me and Seth Payne on SportsRadio 610. You can listen to the entire interview on our station's website, but here are a few highlights, with thanks to Texans content aggregator Houston Stressans for the assist:
Nick Caserio on Dameon Pierce:

“He was dealing with more that maybe people realize” in regards to last season

* Out from practice for a third straight day was RB Joe Mixon. This is allowing for some quality work for Dameon Pierce and the other young running backs, but I'd like to see Mixon out there. Also, not practicing was John Metchie (second straight day), Christian Harris (yet to practice this camp), and Laremy Tunsil (yet to practice, but working out on the side).

* The offense was a little inconsistent, but the good stuff was, man oh man, REALLY good. Nico Collins had a catch and run along the left sideline, where he shook a defender and likely would have gone for another 15 to 20 yards in a regular season game. Then, later in practice, C.J. Stroud threw an absolute drop in the bucket for about a 65 yard bomb for a touchdown to Collins. A reminder that Stroud is an elite arm talent.

* The offense worked on quite a bit in the run game, and one of the standouts was rookie RB Jahwar Jordan, the sixth round pick out of Louisville. He had a nice run up the middle for a big gain, and a couple nice outside stretch runs. I wouldn't mind seeing him mixed in higher up the depth chart for a few plays, especially with Mixon out.

* The play of the practice was a Derek Stingley interception of a Stroud deep ball to Tank Dell, where Dell and Stingley both went up for the ball, and Stingley wrestled it away, but before Dell fought with him on the ground for the ball for literally 20 to 30 seconds. You could see Caserio wanting to get in and break things up before two of his best (and most oft injured players last season) injured each other.

* Aside from those highlight plays, Will Anderson had a pass break up, Henry To'o To'o had a tackle for loss on a screen pass, Calen Bullock was showing up once again at safety, and Jeff Okudah kind of whacked veteran WR Robert Woods on a pass break up, a little too hard for a camp practice. In other words, it was lively out there on Wednesday.

And then I got high.

Seriously though, how many players have gotten hurt in these fights?
Last year's TC, I remember Commanders CB Danny Johnson tore his rotator cuff in a fight.

Jets LB I.K. Enemkpali broke Jets QB Geno Smith's jaw.

Raiders Romanowski then shattered TE Marcus Williams' left eye-socket with a punch, also causing other serious injuries including brain damage................never being able to play again.

Sure there have been others that I can't remember or that I don't know of.

People overreacting to a little scrapping as usual. Especially when it’s , never mind.

Very rarely are these guys hurt in camp fights and if they are hurt it rarely affects their status for the season.

I’m hearing juice around Jacob Phillips as well. Lance has him as more of a backup type, and I think that suits him on this team. I had him a longshot…but he may have a legit shot. His biggest issue has been health. He’s played pretty well when healthy. Sort of like Cashman.

Phillips is a talented LB “when healthy”. But he’s been more injury prone than even Cashman thus far in his career. He’ll be a solid LB3 or even a high end depth LB so long as he’s healthy.

He’s a similar player to Devin Singletary. Not sure he’ll be able to make the active roster here but i’m excited to see him this preseason.

Hopefully our defense becomes the new Legion of Boom! I started saving $150/week (since last month) for Super Bowl tickets and won’t touch the account until the Toros make it. I should be able to afford decent seats by then!

Hell, if I end up with a good amount of cash by then and wooz out I’ll just throw a badass party here at my ranch with catering and hire a great bartender I know to make some cocktails (whiskey sours, old fashioned, Paloma’s, etc…)

Ryans disagrees:

This wasn't that. Punk ass moves by Ward and Stingley. I'm not impressed.

Iron sharpens iron!

(Surprised this was left open to say, lol)
Finally, Demeco addresses.

According to Jon Harris the defense yesterday clearly won the day. From his camp reports so far Agim is having a solid camp. Either Harris doesn’t focus on the RB’s or they haven’t really stood out. Also it seems CJ really struggles with a wet ball.

Yep, DeMeco also mentioned it reminded him of the Jets game with the weather yesterday. Good opportunity for the offense to tighten things up playing in the rain this week.
