2024 TRAINING CAMP DISCUSSION THREAD

Ross and Beck both failed their physicals yesterday.

This does not surprise me about Beck. He's not committed.

Last season his lack of preparation resulted in at least one boneheaded mistake every game. He'd be out of position, out of synch, running a wrong route, dropping a pass. Even his ST TD against the Jags happened because he mistakenly fielded the ball instead of blocking.

I was hoping he'd get it together this season because he is very athletic, but showing up out of shape when you had all offseason to prepare shows he hasn't matured at all.

Beck can easily be replaced by Brevin Jordan and fill in as Hback. He would add an dynamic to our offense that Beck never could or would.

Excited to hear that Kenyon Green is looking good in camp so far. I can’t think of a unit with a higher variance of possibility than the offensive line coming into the year. The Texans have a lot of resources tied up into the offensive line via money and draft picks. “If healthy” is a term that applies better to the offensive line than any other unit.

I think last year we saw the offensive line’s “floor” as a unit. Injuries wrecked the front but Slowik’s scheme and CJ’s advanced ability to handle a muddy pocket made them into a league average unit despite all the injuries. But “if healthy” they could be a top tier unit this season.

Blake Fisher will be a huge plus over Charlie Heck

Fisher was an important addition this offseason. Gives insurance at the OT position and if he shows the talent that got him drafted in round 2, he can give the team an option to cut ties with Howard if he doesn’t return to health.
Howard is locked in for at least the next two years by salary cap. Heck is gone if everyone healthy this year though

At this time of the year, everything regarding players coming off of injuries tends to be reported as unicorns and rainbows. :)

Seth Payne’s latest episode brought up the kickoff drills at practice yesterday. What I found particularly interesting was not that Tank Dell took reps as a returner. But Nico Collins also took reps.

I can’t wait to see what competitive advantage Frank Ross cooks up for the Texans with the new kickoff rules.

If the new kickoff rules open things up where there is a competitive advantage I don’t care who is returning the ball. Especially with the mouths to feed on offense. You want to get a guy like Tank more touches? Have him field kickoffs.
I'd rather see Dell lead block on the goal line than have him return kickoffs. I don't think there's anything more overblown this offseason than the new kickoff rules. It's only a matter of time (a month?) when teams go back to kicking the ball out of the end zone. Unless you can get a special teamer a shot at a guy like Tank Dell. Hopefully, Ryans does not let this happen.

I think it's a good thing that Ryans and Slowik come from San Faran. San Fran went deep into the playoffs several years that they were there. These coaches understand that teams will study them and they intimately know how to evolve their schemes year in and year out, as teams adapt. Similar to the Shannahan/Kubiak system of making running/passing plays look similar, Ryans and Slowik will make teams pay for preying on "tendencies" from similar formations from prior years. Very interested in seeing how these coaches work their craft in 2024.
