2023 TEXANS DRAFT DISCUSSION

Nope watched him play after losing his side kicks to NFL. Like Carter, unimpressive but unlike Carter not injured. As with Richardson he rides the combine wave.
He has consistently ranked in the top 20 on most draft boards for months.
That's an awful lot of scouting talent weight right there.

I don't see him?
I think Rakim took the pic.

At this point I can hardly give two f’ers to care. This team is the biggest downer in history. They could kill the mood like Rosanne walking into your secret liaison when the photo was a French model. Right now too pissed to care.

If you’re referring to them losing that 5th round draft pick, I share the sentiment. Trying to get excited about this f’cked up team makes me ill.

Ironically, most if not all of my simulated mocks ended with the 5th round because I felt like I could still get a good player in the 5th round. It's all a conspiracy against me. First the IRS, now the NFL.
Glad it's you!I thought it was me.

But as you know a lot of those boards are just copying what other people have posted without even watching the players. Let's see how Bresee does as the draft gets closer.

I am waiting for us to lose a first round pick for a tampering charge. 😒

Do they get MRI's at the combine? They have so many players coming through there that they can't do anything more than a rudimentary check.
Those that have a history of surgery and some of those with recent injury are given MRIs...........if they do not have a recent one taken by their own physician. Most players do not undergo an MRI.

One thing they have considered only in the last 2 years is a whole body scan for measurements such as height, wing span, hand size, etc.). But as far as I know this has not be installed. The scanner would essentially be a modified airport scanner..............................much less intrusive and embarrassing.

Another scanner that has only been discussed in bypass called the Hologic DXA body composition scanner is what the Combine really needs in order to get detailed body composition information The whole body scan only takes 113 seconds and therefore one machine could easily do 319 players in less than 10 hours:

Horizon® DXA system

No thanks. He had a better running back than Tyrod Taylor did and he still couldn’t hit receivers that were open. No thanks.
How’d he all of a sudden get inaccurate?

He’s accurate his whole life except in 2022. How’s that happen?

As Allen progressed as a passer, I thought we would see him run less. That hasn't happened. He's a freak, I get that. But the Bills need to find another option in their running game. What Allen is doing is not sustainable.
Same thing I thought with Andrew Luck. Didn’t make sense to me. Luck had a very high football IQ, he could throw the ball accurately & win from the pocket, he knew how to play the game.

But he’d rather play rugby instead of throw the ball away.

Luck played most of his career with bad Olines. Luck tried to overcome the Colts philosophy in not investing in the Oline.

I would like to see a pic of one of our 300 plus 6’6” players in that goofy chair pod, lol. Can they even get in it, it may be bigger than it looks in pic I guess or maybe they are prepping the room to draft Young

As much as some remain unconcerned regarding Young's build, no one is really talking about a most important stat. What shouldn't be ignored in light of his obvious lack of bulk, was that he has been sacked 53 times in the past two seasons. Every sack in the NFL is a significant risk for injury. In college, he had a great Oline, so why wouldn't that bring up to some extent the subject of "pocket awareness"?

Bryce has a chip on his shoulder with super star mentality. Can’t remember if I’ve ever seen him slide, surely he has? Will have to learn basic survival skills next level.

Stroud is the only one I can remember who is a polished slider. Levis is more like Big Ben was, just absorbs punishments. Richardson will just flat run you over.

Unfortunately, that chip is on his throwing shoulder.

Draft the best QB at No. 2. Draft the best WR at No. 12.

Every other move at the top of the draft is being too cool for school IMO.
Controlling the line of scrimmage is paramount to winning. It's old school and new school. There's nothing cute about that strategy. That said, if this year's class of quarterbacks and wide receivers were on par with some of the better classes in recent years, I'd be more inclined to draft them 1.2 and 1.12.

I focused on athleticism in this mock draft, relying on the coaching staff to coach players up. I traded Tunsil and Cooks. I drafted Tunsil's replacement, but I'm relying on Metchie coming in and taking Cooks spot. I drafted heavily on the defensive side of the ball, thinking that side has the most holes. The Texans would have plenty of opportunities to coach them up. I did get the top tackle and center in the draft, a good compliment to Pierce, and a big-bodied WR. 23 total draft picks. Gotta be a draft record. Helped the salary cap out tremendously.
Both sides of the ball should be much faster with this draft. Let whichever vet the Texans sign and Mills take the lumps behind the rookie LT and C. I would sit Richardson, only playing him in garbage time.

I can’t do a proper mock until FA shakes itself out, but I don’t see a first round tackle when we have those guys in place. And no I’m not moving our RT inside. He did relatively well at RT last year, leave him alone. And if I am the Texans I look for a good vet C in FA. FYI there is a mock thread elsewhere on this board. Personally, I’d prefer to see mocks there and leave this thread to discussion, debate, news, rumor, etc related to the Texans draft.

That’s an oldie. I think I said that after Lovie gave his middle finger on the way out the door and suddenly grew a big set of balls that had not dropped all season. To me, that’s a way bigger Fubar than losing this 5th. Not that I am happy over it, but in terms of degree of pissed, this barely registers compared to giving up 1.1.

Seems pretty obvious at this point that if Young is there at 2 he’s going to be our pick
Agree.
The only reason I can see Texans moving up to #1 is if they want to make sure they don't get jumped by someone else who definitely targeted him.

It almost looked as though Howard was even better when he lined up next to Tunsil last season.

I would draft RT- Darnell Wright (Tennessee) immediately to fill the void. I believe Wright could be an instant gratification pick from Day1.

I’d also draft OC- Michael-Schmitz (Minnesota) to plug the biggest need on the OL.

Shift Green over to RG could be the right move for his second year.

One thing I’d be completely sure of…..the left side of the OL would be a QB’s best friend while the right side could become the running games best friend.

The Texans have enough premium draft capital to get that RD5 pick back and much more in the process.

For those who won't or can't click through:
  • Texans are interested in signing Garoppolo to let the rookie QB sit and learn
  • Texans' primary free agent targets are expect to be in the interior offensive and defensive line markets
  • Specific names mentioned are Sheldon Rankins (DT, Jets), Jake Brendel (C, 49ers), and David Onyemata (DT, Saints)
  • Jimmie Ward is not coming to Houston
  • Brandin Cooks still wants out
  • Texans will not be in on Lamar Jackson
  • Texans are not interested in Anthony Richardson, but like both Bryce Young and CJ Stroud

Thanks for the breakdown. I use Tapatalk and the app has been really clunky lately. They have done it on purpose so that you have to pay for a subscription. I use to get images of tweets and now it’s just links. The app sucks now.

It looks like with those moves the Texans could turn a corner and real competitive this upcoming season.

We saw how that went in 2002 & 2003. Worked out great for the WR (except his career numbers are lower than if he went to another team). The QB? Not so much.

Nice review. The only thing is that Wilson is not as "embedded" as he would want to make you think. When is the last time he ever broke any major news? I am hearing that the Texans at least at this time are not even sure that they will be taking a QB at 1:2.

[On a side note, someone should pay for Wilson to take a Carnegie course in public speaking and presentation. He is absolutely unlisternable. Meanwhile, he would be better off staying away from interviews and sticking to writing.]

Gotta remember when in January he reported that Ryans wasn’t going to even be interviewing here because he wasn’t interested…

Has anyone noticed how slow the 40 times for the top receivers were at the Combine? I had been thinking Cooks might not be tradable before the draft, but with the slow times, maybe there will be some interest. Otherwise, any later trade would not benefit the Texans until 2024, which might mean we could get a second. Could we get a second in this year's draft?

Still no comment on Young's shoulder, whether he is working out or whether he is doing physical therapy.

It'll be interesting how we do in free agency. Legal tampering begins Monday.

Can understand DeMeco being interested in Jimmie G. Gives us the best chance of winning this season. But what kind of contract?

Not really? Smith-Njigba and Johnston didn't run 40's, but the other top guys looked to be in the 4.4s.

I think teams that may be interested in Cooks are looking for veteran help, anyway. Cooks has lost some speed himself. But it's his contract and antics that have soured teams on him.

Jimmy G won because he had a good team around him. He won't have that here, at least not in '23. Not to mention the fact that Shanny wants no part of him.

This guys plan is the The Jimmy G Plan
Step 1 sign Jimmy G
Step 2 trade back
Step 3 draft players draft picks
Step 4 Get a Hooker
My thought is that he eliminated Young CJ Levis Anthony from the scene but the Hooker step not so sure? Texans do need to draft a QB rookie tho.

Dumb plan.

I find it pretty amusing how those out there who don't think much of the top of this QB class would rather pass on those guys and settle for guys further down the line.
