2020 UDFAs

An UDFA rookie that hasn't played a down of NFL football over a 3 yr starter in the NFL?

Give me the guy that's already played in the NFL.
Understood but I'm talking about getting him on the roster now to develop and be ready to take over in a year not for starting Day 1. I know the term "develop" is not something used much if at all in relation to Mike Develin and the OL.

Texans have signed UDFA wide receiver Tyler Simmons; Georgia, 6'-0"/201 lbs/4.4 forty; to a 3 year contract, $75,000 guaranteed, including a $25,000 signing bonus and $50,000 of his first year guaranteed.

Seems the Texans began pursuing him right after their final selection in the 6th round. Will be competing with DeAndre Carter as the return specialist. Last year at Georgia he returned 9 punts for 143 yds, averaging 15.9 yds.

The write-up makes it sound like he has a pretty good chance of making the team. Practice squad at a minimum.

Good read.

Looks like a good return guy. Hopefully he's not a fumbler.

He only returned 9 punts, so he obviously wasn't his teams main PR. Georgia was dying for one of the WR's to step up last yr after all of their WR's graduated. Obviously this guy didn't step up. A true frosh (Pickens and a a transfer Cager were the Bulldogs main WR's. This guy might make the PS. The expanded rosters might help him though.

ILB Jan Johnson signed a 3 year, $2,290,000 contract with the Houston Texans, including a $5,000 signing bonus, $15,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $763,333. In 2020, Johnson will earn a base salary of $610,000 and a signing bonus of $5,000, while carrying a cap hit of $611,666 and a dead cap value of $15,000.

WOW isn't that quite a bit for a UDFA?

Undrafted free agency is a little bit like college recruiting, Snead adds: Pay the five-star players, then fill out the remaining needs with the three-star players. Or, Snead adds, as former Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips used to say: “Pay the good players.”

The unusual circumstances of this year’s pre-draft process created some additional challenges in identifying who those players are, particularly for the small-school prospects who were not invited to the NFL combine or Senior Bowl and did not get to work out in front of NFL evaluators due to the cancellation of most Pro Days. But every team is in the same boat, having to rely on film, Zoom calls and the work scouts did last fall to make their evaluations. Perhaps as a result there could be more hidden gems this year, talented players who flew under the radar and didn’t get drafted, adding to both the intrigue and anxiety for this year’s undrafted free agent frenzy.

“It’ll be certainly a challenge,” Veach said. “I can sit here and talk to you ‘til the cows come home about how great [our] plan is, and I’m sure it’ll be chaotic and crazy. But it’ll certainly be a story for years to come for all draft rooms and how it all went down.”
