You can find every position anywhere in the draft. Just like you can find value in a rb early, just like every other position.
The 'new rules' for rb's have become pretty silly.
Running backs can still be difference makers. Difference makers should be drafted asap when identified. It's that simple.

Are there any stats available as to how many RB's with Jacobs college production who not only went in RD1 but carried their NFL offenses to success behind questionable OL's?

As I stated earlier in the thread, drafting a RB in the first is zero issue if the guy is elite. The guys you name were all elite prospects.
Jacobs is not. He's a good RB, but not in the same stratosphere as the guys you name.
I agree he's not quite on their level. He's a full notch below in fact, simply because they're so good.
Those guys were also all top-10 picks, which is not the question here with Jacobs. It's a notch below.
But I also don't think 'elite' is necessary. Very good/talented with seemingly very smoothly translatable traits, afaic, is qualifier enough.

Emmitt Smith fell with your post. He was too slow, too small. That was in an era that valued RBs more.
Elite is a cop out. Is he more talented than the folks being elevated for need. Absolutely yes.

McGary tested in 82nd percentile at the Combine and was a top performer in the 3-cone and the 40.
Little tested in the 31st percentile and was near the bottom in the 40 and short shuttle.

If he was then he wouldn't have split carries with 2 other guys.
Saban had no issue using past stud RB's as bellcows but curiously did not do the same with Jacobs.

I brought up your age only because your literally a case study done in classes. Older generations who are slow to adapt to information and technology changes. Same type of people said Analytics couldn't work in baseball... Then they said analytics couldn't possibly work in basketball.. Now they say it in football.. Analytics and using data to achieve the slightest advantage is now in every sport. You know there are still people who argue the corner 3 point shot isn't the best shot in basketball or that the shift in baseball isn't optimal?
Really there isn't any type of Analytic or data for a RB v a LT or QB? Hmm... I guess all the teams who value QB's, Defensive ends, OT and CB over the Running back position are just doing it for the heck of it...:vincepalm:

Sean Bunting. I could be wrong, but it seems that the drop in talent is less between our 1st and 2nd round picks than between the 2nd and 3rd round picks at CB. For that reason, I'm hoping we address CB in the 2nd round next week as the options at this stage are starting to have holes in their game that need to be schemed around. I don't see getting the secondary help we need in the 5th round so that's where I'm looking in the 3rd for this mock.

You want to wait til the 3rd to address CB? In this mock, Tytus Howard and Max Sharping are still on the board on the 3rd and I think it's realistic that one or both will be there next week. These 2 are closer in talent to Little and McGary than what Long/Isiah Johnson/Layne/Dean are to Julian Love, no?

What are you talking about? Predict 64?? I said "There is a reason why RB's are devalued across the league.. They have the shortest shelf life and the average Running backs career is approximately 2.5 years(Wall Street Journal) and you can find them anywhere in the draft for minimal loss."
I could point to data like from 2003-2010 there were 25 RB picked in the first round, and from 2011-2018 There were 12 RB's picked in the first round.
I could point to data from 1999 to 2014 RB's taken in the 1st round have the fewest starts (8.4) of any other position group drafted in the 1st round.
I could point out that in that same period, only 61% of Running back picked in the first round made it to 50 games started. The lowest of of any position group..
I could point out that from 2000-2016 only 35% of all-Pro RB's were drafted in the 1st round. The lowest of any position...
I could point to RB's getting paid less then every other position except TE and Safety.
I could show you the data on how NFL teams are passing more and running less because its a more optimal approach analytically.
I could tell you all the Brilliant minds who attend the Sloan and how they all say the same thing I've been stating on the RB position, the speach from Daryl Morey on the changing of the RB value. Have you been to the conference?? I could point to all the teams and the new investments they've made in Analytics.
I could do all of these things, but you will still see things through your preconceived notions and I have better things to do then educate you. I'm sure your as correct on this as you were on Richard Sherman blazing 40 time.

Sean Bunting and Isaiah Johnson are both tempting because of the potential, but Long has produced and is a top-tier athlete. May not have the ideal size, but that's why he's available in the 3rd round. If he were 6'1 he'd be a lock for the top-20.

Measuables had him on the bench watching. We drafted Drew Henson and his 12 NFL completions & got someone to pay for his measurables beating out Brady
We got a 3rd off stupid. And we drafted one of those 'you can find them in any round' RBs, Vernand Morency. Remember him from lore of the NFL, great RBs, tales of great teams?

Surprising the number of good DBs still on the board. Tough pick here. JoeJuan Williams is intriguing, could be Richard Sherman or out of the league in 3 years. David Long is probably the safest pick, not likely to ever be a pro bowler but is consistent and will see the field.
My pick is for Amani Hooker - Safety - Iowa
I would rather land a CB but Hooker is way to high on my list to pass up here. Could be a surprise and sneak into the late first early second round. Proved he was more than just effort and instincts with a very athletic showing at the combine.

I just think Little and McGary would solve the OT issues which have plagued this team for the last 2 yrs for the nest 10 yrs.
If the draft fell this way, yes. Unless you told me Scharping will be there at 86. Howard will be long gone before 86 in the real draft.
I've got faith that one of Long (My favorite) Johnson, Dean, Bunting will be there at 86. Love/Layne will probably be gone.
It's very tempting to add a guy like Boykin in Rd. 3 and load up on offense if the draft fell this way. But I really like the Rd.3 CB's.

hahaha, You conveniently left out that the 3 Running backs taken in the Top 5 that year were all busts... Oh and who had the most impact and value? That's right its a 3rd round pick RB named Frank Gore... Darren Sproles, Marion Barber and Brandon Jacobs all better value in every way then Your 1st round RB.
