I like the defensive moves.
Gipson- solid starting safety who is locked up for 3 years and $7.5 million cap hit. Not as dynamic as Matthieu but he's a lot cheaper.
Roby- had a down year, but he believes he can be a star and signed a one year "prove it" deal similar to what Matthieu did. He'll be motivated and Crennel can hopefully maximize his talent. Only bad thing is if he plays awesome he'll look for a big payday like Matthieu got.
Boddy-Calhoun- Solid depth who can play corner, slot or safety as a backup. Can also be the primary nickel corner and will compete with Colvin fro time in the slot. Signed just for 1 year, $900k.
Angelo Blackson- not a probowler but provides the size Crennel wants and at least average production. Only $4 per year for 3 years.
They are also all young and don't have injury concerns like some other signings (kalil, seantrel) or huge flaws (TEs who can't block or RBs who can't run).
Now they just need to figure out the Clowney situation.
If I felt the Texans didn’t care about winning it all, there wouldn’t be a chance I would give them the effort of one keystroke. I’m really not sure why you, TK and many others even bother with them.
Shopping at Walmart.
They will figure out the Clowney thing all right. Tag him and try to trade him or tag him, keep him next yr then try to trade him. Either way Clowney isn't lomg for Houston.
Otherwise they would have to pay Clowney and we know that's unlikely to happen.
Belichick shops at walmart. You surround your stars with these guys. You don't pay star money for average players (Trent Brown, saffold, etc)
Belichick is an anomaly.
And likely oline coach.Yup. People always point to what the Pat's do/did and forget about the part where they have the best coach, Qb, and maybe tight end of all time.

Scarnecchia is a legend.
Duplicate post.Don't know enough about him to call him a legend. I know Devlin is not.

Almost all the playoff teams spent light in free agency.
I agree. But, I truly believe that O’Brien believes he has improved (In that warped little mind of his) due to the team finally breaking out of the 9-7 plateau. Truth is, he has NOT improved! I hope from all the time he has spent “looking in the mirror” something has finally clicked, although I’m not holding my breath.I really wish it were as simple as that. But truth is we aren't those teams. Nothing like them.
BO'b says it starts with him. That he needs to get better. I hope he's honest enough to realize he hasn't gotten better over the last 5 years.
& that's not being negative. That's the only way we'll become true contenders under BO'b.
Then stop using them as an example when it suits you.
Almost all the playoff teams spent light in free agency.
Not to mention Brady has deliberately taken lesser contracts to keep their cap competitive.
any sort of consistent winning is an NFL anomaly...around 25 of the teams in the NFL are "same mediocre dog different fleas" ...there are a handful in true suck and a handful with true goodness...most of the league is wheel spinning in some manner.
Yep, and the Texans have the 2nd most cap space and a QB on a rookie deal.
this franchise is dormant like herpes.
True, but do you want to use that as an excuse and keep on doing the things that lump you in with the other 75% of the teams, or do you want to try to put the best team possible on the field?
They have to factor in reality as well. You could have a prick like Swearinger or a Stud like Brooks... if O'Brien doesn't want to coach them, he's not going to coach them no matter how much money you spend (Oz).yes, but we know what moves constitute the best team possible? I know which ones are aggressive and interesting versus measured, conservative and predictable. My hope is the Texans have a better idea which move(s) lead to that best possible team over which ones I agree with or excite me.

The Rams?
The Eagles?
The Saints?
They've all made moves in trades/FA to better there teams. You telling me as of today the Texans are better/more talented team than they were at the end of the yr?
Yes they all spent light.i can share the Albert breer article again.
And as far as personnel, the problem isn't spending money, it's evaluation. The defense is quite good and has been for awhile.
I mean, obrien is spending $10m on seantrel and kalil, two dudes who haven't been healthy in years and sucked even when healthy

Houston announced it has signed tackle Seantrel Henderson to a one-year extension. The deal is worth a max value of $4.5 million, a source told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
The former Pro Bowl selection has a $2.25 million signing bonus and a $3.25 million base salary.
Now where I went to school they thought us $2.25 + $3.25 is $5.5M not $7.5M.
According to traditional grammar, a is the correct indefinite article preceding a pronounced h. I particularly hate the TV-journalist's error of saying "an historic...". BTW, I help define the rules of English grammar. Not according to traditional grammar.
Kalil gets another $125k for every game he is active, so possibly another $2 mil.
The Texans dont spend $$$$ in FA.
They're all about the draft.
Next offseason when they have the most cap space in the NFL and a guy like Ingram comes along dont expect them to sign him. It's not the Texans worthy way. But hey, they're on their way to the cap savings AFCCG so I guess fans should buy in to they are doing every thing they can to put the best product on the field possible.

Didn't they spend a little to bring in Lamar Miller?
I'd sign Ingram and let Miller go in a heartbeat
So let's just not use tackles at all?
They do have the 2nd most unused cap space in the NFL.
They didn't spend their cap last yr and everybody said they're going to roll it over and spend it this yr. Wonder what that crowd is thinking now. Maybe they will continue to roll it over until 2030.
I liked re-signing Henderson at 1.4
Kalil at 7.5 not so much.
Find better ones without paying $26 million for average production (Trent brown) which would handicap the team. I know it's hard but that's the job. If O'Brien can't do it (and it's obvious he can't build an offense with limites resources which is what the salary cap and draft do) then it's time to move on.
It's only been five years dude. Give it time. Three more years & we'll know what he can & can't do.
Miller was signed to a 4 year $26 mil ($6.5 mil/yr) contract, so yes. They'd clear $6.2 mil in cap by cutting him.
What steelb leaves out of his 'Texans have 2nd most cap' squawks is the Colts have by far the most. Yet somehow they improved a ton last season, including OL, and are now the team to beat.
Why do you think the Colts passed them? Could it be that they traded down and got Nelson and two 2nds. Meanwhile the Texans were picking in the 3rd rd.
You gotta use your cap space to catch back up.
Also when you add in Luck was better than Watson last yr, it is what it is.
It's like a bean counter is running the org, which Olsen probably is doing behind the scenes
Another year of Watts career wasted and another rookie contract year of Watson gone. Cap is going to tighten ounce Watson gets new deal. We are filling in the Grand Canyon with a 5 gallon bucket.Maybe I'm wrong, but I didn't see this being a strong year for OT free agents. We went after the best, but he chose to go somewhere else. We can't force someone to sign with us. We signed a guy on a prove it deal. If he turns out to suck, he won't make the team, and won't cost us much. If he makes the team, hopefully it will be because he proved himself.
As far as the rest of the OT free agents this year, are any of them really any better than every one of the OT's playing in the AAF? Maybe the Texans have their eye on one or more of the OT's playing in the AAF. That goes for RB's too.
I haven't been able to watch all of the AAF games, so I don't know if there are any good prospects there, but let's be honest, there wasn't much in free agency that I wanted to break the bank for.
Me either - just goinDon't know enough about him to call him a legend. I know Devlin is not.
Sadly, JJ's career might be over by the time Watson needs to be paid. Or soon after at least.Another year of Watts career wasted and another rookie contract year of Watson gone. Cap is going to tighten ounce Watson gets new deal. We will filling in the Grand Canyon with a 5 gallon bucket.
The Texans have 4 picks in the 1st 3 rounds. They can do the same, draft. Exact opposite of spending multiple picks to get 1 guy.
Luck only played better than Watson at the tail end of the season, particularly the playoff game. Better coaching will be hard to catch up on.
How did we ever get into cap hell with bean counters running this organization?
