2019 Texans free agency

Dodged a bullet with no deal with Brown. One hit wonder .. should send a commission check to Tom Brady as should Solder and any other OL that comes out of NE. Tyrann didnt take the offer I would offer the same money to Landon Collins .. Earl Thomas is coming off broken leg and he's also a free safety .. Reid is our FS of the future and he did not look good when asked to play the strong side so I would pass on the huge payday and positional obstacles of Thomas.

Crossing fingers for Leveon Bell .. would be the best back and interestingly the most similar back to Arian Foster we've had since Bobby Feeno was cut. Pay the man Brian.

Stay the course .. get your OT in the draft and plug him in day 1 to grow with Watson.

Good deals in keeping Blackson, Scarlett, Fairbairn - quality depth and value.

Still early .. RIP to my F5 key.

I actually hope they blow their wad on Bell then he has to run behind the crap OL, then I cant wait to see all of the BOB hate. You know what, he will deserve the criticism he gets because of not fixing the OL.

Good God Steel you are acting like the Texans just told Brady to take a hike. Brown had one good season and it was with the aforementioned Brady. Pretty sure Brady could win with a girl scout troop as his Oline. Of course with the Pats Oline coach that would be a pretty mean troop so there's that as well. Raiders way over paid for a guy that has not proven himself outside of NE and you can't judge a player based on how they do there. Unless they suck there and then its safe to say they will really suck elsewhere.
I see many are writing TB off - I wouldn't do that just yet after all, he had to learn some good things under their coaches.

I'm not writing him off, I wouldn't have minded if he had come here just not at the price tag the Raiders got him at. Do I think he's a good player, yes, do I think he deserves to be the highest paid guard OT in the history of the NFL, that's I'm not so sure on and I'm glad we're not the ones paying to find out.

I predict Derek Carr will have more tears than the mother of the bride

We're going to find out.

Signing the Brown's definitely signals that the Raiders are going to do what it takes to have a solid team when they get to Vegas.

Sad thing is, can you imagine if the Texans did the same thing? Some orgs take chances, some count their $$$$.

Texans defensive lineman Christian Covington is expected to hit free agency. Canada native and former sixth-round draft pick from Rice has played his entire career in Houston since high school. Should have healthy market after career-high 3 1/2 sacks last season.

Told you it's been the Obrien regime the whole time. OL and offense won't get fixed until he's gone

Obrien is HAPPY with Davenport and seantrel as his tackles.

We will see after the draft but I'm beginning to agree with you.

I guess I was just being optimistic and the more things change the more they remain the same.

BTW, I would rather them re-sign KJax than Bradley F'n Roby.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/03/11/report-texans-re-sign-angelo-blackson/

most because this is "news"

Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports that the team has re-signed Blackson to a three-year deal. The deal has a reported value of $12 million.

[/QUOTE

  • Angelo Blackson, DE (Texans): Three years, $12MM. $3.5MM guaranteed. Salaries of $2MM (guaranteed), $3.5MM, and $3.5MM. $1.5MM 2019 roster bonus. $31,250 per game 46-man roster bonus. Twitter link via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

When the Raiders are really good in 2 yrs when they get to Vegas I want you to remember the moves they've made this offseason and then I dont want you wondering why the Texans have fallen behind them.

Remember this post in particular and respond to me then.

Mayock/Gruden > Gaine/BOB it crtainly appears that way and it didn't have to be this way. Watch Mayock add 3 young defensive studs in the best defensive draft this decade and a great young OG like Lindstrom.

You may be correct.

But man...I want to give you a pacifier right now. Free agency JUST started. If they get a good tackle from the draft (my hope is Dillard) I'll be okay with letting Trent Brown go.

The offseason is less than 2 hours old. Can we at least wait until 3 hours before we all do a mass suicide?

4 Texans resigned on new contracts today -

Heath
Fairburn
Scarlett
Blackson

Texans didn't tender RFA DE Joel Heath, per source, but did re-sign him to a one-year deal worth less than $2.025 million original round tender

According to the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, the Texans submitted a $3.1 million tender for the former UCLA Bruin placekicker.

In addition to signing Blackson to a new deal, the Texans also issued a $2.025 million tender for restricted free agent linebacker Brennan Scarlett, per Wilson. He was an effective contributor throughout the season but ultimately landed on Injured Reserve in early December after suffering an ankle injury. He was viewed as one of the best linebackers/special team options in the NFL by Pro Football Focus and earned an 89.9 overall grade despite missing four games.

I'm sorry I just need to check a few things, be right back.....

Yep, sky is still a smokey blue in Houston, grass is mostly green, cows still do not have wings and I am not a millionaire, so whatever world I've fallen into where SteelB is now calling for Gaine and BoB's heads it can't be to different from the one I just left. Seriously it was one player at way to high a price tag and now you are saying that everything is doom and gloom again. So is Gaine the new Rick Smith and to blame for everything? Also, no I won't remember this post in two years, Hell I doubt I'll remember it in two days, just not that important to me.

It's not about Brown

It's about what other teams are doing and what the Texans are not doing. The Texans will never be anything more than slightly mediocre with a draft only/cheap fa strategy. We've seen this crap for yrs and I was hoping things had changed but obviously I was wrong. What good is cap space if you only use it on 2nd tier fa's?

Oh crap, there are four things I have come to accept in life:

1) The inevitably of death.
2) The inevitably of taxes
3) Politicians will all lie, no matter the party.
4) Steelb will be optimistic about OB and his optimism makes me hope he is right, even though I disagree with him and remain the ever pessimist.

When Steelb is at risk of pulling out the pink soap....... you know we are screwed

LOL

Love ya man,

I wish I could like this post more than once.

It's not about Brown as I've said in another post.

It's about that it appears that Cal/Cletus learned well from his daddy.

No suicide here

We've seen this sh!t for yrs, it is what it is.

I guess I was hoping for change down on Kirby.

i'm going to have a craft beer.

FA doesn't even officially start until Wednesday. I'm pretty tough on this regime, especially the coaching side, but I won't make a final assessment until FA and the draft play out. Certainly, I would give it a week or two and let this FA period play out. I mean right now, it's like condemning someone to death row because they have a gun in the car and they are sitting in front of a bank.

yes, and BOB and Gaine both told us that they prefer to re-sign there own over free agents except a the very bottom of the roster...doing what they said they would do so far.

I hope they pay with their jobs and Watson suffers the consequences of their inactions.

Think about it steel - Texans are going after Cajuste in a trade back!
They have already told us Henderson is their RT and they need a Lefty, and Cajuste will likely be there in the late 1st.
If Cajuste is off the board, they can still take Little.

Trent Brown sign huge deal with Raiders
I dunno maybe Brown was a young man who was impressed by the glitz and excitement and glamour of living and working in Las Vegas ?
Or maybe it was all about the benjamins and this was the best deal he was offered including what GM Gaine was willing to pay for his services ?
Just like last year when we eventually learned that another former Pats LT, Nate Soldier, passed on the Texans offer for non monetary considerations, we will get the details on this missed opportunity sooner or later.
So now it looks like it's on to plan B, the Draft, as the only option remaining to solve our Oline problem at LT if it's to be solved in 2019 ?

Its not hard to figure out, Raiders made him the highest paid Oline in the history of the NFL with over half of it guaranteed money. He already has a ring so he would have been stupid not to take that deal unless someone beat the Raiders offer of the moon by offering the moon and the sun. Nothing complex about it.

I would say that what they did was re-sign some of the backend of the roster. Which is fine. It doesn't preclude bringing in rookies, UDFAs, or street free agents to challenge them.

To get back to Trent Brown non-signing, it seems like the Texans are going out of their way to announce their disinterest. There were a lot of reports that suggested they were interested. Not necessarily $66 million interested. Maybe the lesson in this is to be like the Patriots and not like the Raiders. Find an undervalued OT and make an offer to a team that's looking to upgrade. It won't surprise me in the least if the Pats try the same thing this offseason. It's what they do. Can the Texans do the same thing? I don't know, but it's something I hope they are considering.

The difference is Solder was older, Brown is a young, very good 25 yr old LT that the Texans typically dont want to spend $$$$ on. Like I said nothing hs changed and the comes directly from the top. Cal learned well from that cheap old bastard. Count your gold Cal and may your team always suck balls.

I wonder what the red flags were.

Daryl Williams and Ja’Waun james both more proven than Trent Brown last offseason coming off his torn labrum. Both RTs but if we can get one of them and maybe Rodger Saffold then i’ll feel pretty good going into the draft.

Sounds like Rankin is thought to slot in at LG this season but i’d feel better bringing Saffold in and having a competition/loser is quality depth scenario. Rankin’s draft standing does not mean he should be handed a starting job when there’s an opportunity to get better.

Throw in a RB like Tevin Coleman and I think this is a Brian Gaine esque free agent haul. I’ll wait and see how the dominoes fall before I throw a fit :)

Man if this is par for the course on signing F/A this season suddenly 70 million isn't looking like much cap space. Kind of makes me glad the Texans are sitting out this overpaying insanity.

I know, but I'm afraid TheKDog is correct and they're content with Davenport/Henderson.
