2019 NFL Draft 1st Round discussion

Howard would have been gone for sure. Funny, his film reminded me a little of Jason Peters, think he can develop into one of those monster space eating LT’s, funny that Philly trades up for a more finesse LT in Dillard, but that’s just me.
I agree. I like Howard, just think we could have traded back a little and still got him, but I am sure they panicked when Dillard got picked. I do think Howard needs to stick to the right side.

That makes sense. Howard and Little were the only guys left with LT potential. Howard wasn't getting to #54 and Gaine wasn't dealing picks. Have to get by with Davenport or Kalil in 2019, and hope Howard will be ready to roll in 2020.
Ready to roll with a different QB after Watson injured. Great ******* plan Gaines/BOB

The more I read about Tuytus, the more I’m digging this pick. Held up well in Senior Bowl, very good pass blocker. He has as much potential as anyone.

I'm with those who think we could have dropped back and still gotten Tytus Howard, picking the best CB at 23 or another OL. I'm not impressed, but not many liked Duane Brown when he gets as selected, either. Or the JJ Watt pick when it first happened, either.

Well I hope they get Isabella or Sanders. I like what I saw from both of them.
We need much more to go for either of those in round two imo. Just a thought guys, we are now in range CLark got for Seattle and Raiders still possible at 27

F*** this organization. We didn’t have one person in that war room with enough balls to stand up and say this is ridiculously bad value and optics for the franchise?

I don't see how that explanation makes sense. You take your 2nd-round-rated OL in the 1st round to be assured you can take another 2nd-round-rated player in the actual 2nd round?

Just trade back and get an extra 2nd-round pick (or 2) from someone. You know, just mail it in for 2019. Who TF needs 1st-round talent?

Everyone here hating the pick makes me like it more. Reminds me of the Watt pick when this board freaked out and trashed the pick immediately.

Watt was actually considered a blue chip prospect though..

This dude was just sitting on his couch surprised more than we were that he went in the first round.

Why does BOB always have to be the smartest guy in the room? You've got two Olineman clearly more ready, and from major programs. Instead, you go small school guy with high upside...but lower floor.

I can see passing on Taylor if there are medical red flags. But Ford? I don't get passing on Ford for Howard. Howard is the better athlete, granted, but Ford is just nasty and is a day one starter at either RG or RT. Give me the big school nasty guy over the "athlete". Wrong way to go Gaine. Wrong way to go.

We'll see, but BOB and our vaunted oline coach that can't seem to coach up anyone better have this guy ready to go early in the season to start - legitimately start not because he's the only option.

Damn you Philly!
DAMN YOU BOB

Well I like Howard just not here..so as Tytus is considered a down the road starter it has to mean Davenport starts LT as I thought with Howard to aim for 2020. Standig did have Howard @ 42 to Bengals but as they got Jonah maybe Howard better than I thought. SHeesh if we just had an oline coach. He only benched 21 and hasn't played right side since HS. At least we can control him for five years. I still think at least one more OLineman coming.

He played 10 games last season at RT.

Tomorrow, we need to hit two of the following - CB, G, T (yes another one!), S, DL/Edge or RB.

Stop being smartest guy in the room, and draft players who aren't projects! Projects are 4th rd down.

If he's better than Spencer this is a win.

I loved Spencer.
I did too. But he was a bonafide LT...............mean mutha

I had Howard as a potential target in rd 2, but this is a round too early imho

Imagine you had a trade in place to go get Dillard at 8, but your HC has a better idea. Says Dillard will be there at 23, so you wait.

You're getting antsy, Minnesota takes a Center. Seattle calls, offers you dibs. You hold your water, pass. Green bay takes the spot & takes a Safety. You let out a huge sigh.

Baltimore calls, let you know they're getting a lot of calls. You don't believe them, you don't take the bait. Eagles take your guy.

Now that HC is mad you. Why didn't you trade up & get your guy at 8? The name calling starts. You give as good as you get. Then he says, "You're always a dollar short."

"Just like..... Rick

Cal tries to stop him. Devlin starts making loud noises, but you hear it. "Smith."

What are you going to do? Wait at 54 for the 50th best player in the draft? No. That's not how we do in H-Town. We'll show him.

"If you think missing on Dillard was bad, watch this? " You don't ask for permission. You don't seek consensus. You scribble the name on your card. Don't show it to anyone. You nonchalantly, but smuggly turn in your pick.

No they took their best OT on their board who most likely would not be there in round two. If that is their board I'm okay with it; now they have two years imo to make him a LT. Draft isn't over yet.

This is what happens when you have a stubborn SOB that thinks he is a genius. My chin looks better than yours

Well, there were teams wanting to trade up. We could have taken the deal the Colts got

I hope he works out but damn seems like a guy they could’ve waited for later. Why not take the bpa or drop back to get more picks. I hope I’m wrong about Seth wand part deux and he becomes a good tackle.

I don't see Devlin making any noises. A bad pick takes the pressure off his poor development skills. He can always hide behind the GM/HC's poor decisions.

RT #58 at the senior bowl. I'm w/holding judgment on whether this was a reach or not because I didn't study him at all. Here he shows very good reach blocking and getting to the 2nd level in the run game and excellent pass pro. Not sure what isn't to like other than seeming to be a reach according to the expectations set by 'draft experts'.

I'm wondering if OB and Gaine panicked when the guy they wanted was grabbed at 22. It sure looks like they weren't ready for that, so jumped on the guy they were targeting for round 2. I also wonder how long it will take before they think more clearly about what else they could have done at 23. Tytus Howard may prove to be a good choice over the long run, but right now it feels like they reached.

Maybe I'm over-reacting. I should just wait and see what Brother Devlin can do with Brother Howard. Tytus may not be the best the Texans could have done at 23, but I'm sure they could have done much worse. Tytus Howard should prove to be a good player over time.

Trade back and get easily. Fuming stupid.

LolComparing this got a watt. Watt was a great pic only idiots didn’t like him. This is a fken joke.

FK that. You get you a starter at 23 or you trade down. This as stupid. PERIOD

How do you define bad pick? Do you think he lacks the ability/talent to play LT?

Looked pretty good in the Senior Bowl. If he does that well for us, it's a pretty fair pick.

or maybe they stuck to their board didn't panic as they think Howard brings as much as Dillard especially when it would cost to got get him and Texan need every pick. We get caught up in what we think is a players skill set.

This is less about the Texans making a bad pick and more about the Texans not getting a steal. Dillard should have been off the board much earlier. While Gaine was waiting for the draft board to speak to him, Howie Roseman was speaking to Eric DeCosta. Remember that article about how Roseman was going to trade down and accumulate more picks? Nope, went and got his franchise LT instead. Now, he gets a LT for 5 years at a late 1st round rookie contract price. He's a GM that gets it.

just heard from a reliable source that they wanted howard in the 2nd rd. texans didnt want to take a chance and get jumped again so they took him with their first pick. this guaranteed they get the 2nd rder they wanted.

You know how to avoid getting jumped.
