Funny.

Lance Z has earned credibility over the years. I'm glad he's the guy telling me the sky is not falling.

But my frustration is with the situation and the perfect draft scenario getting flushed by the Eagles and their inbred fans.

As far as Gaine's decision on the pick, he did what he had to do. If no other prospects have the physicality to be a pro LT, then Gaine shouldn't screw around. It's easy to say "Trade back, get him in round 2," but that invites another opportunity to get screwed again. And how do we know there was a favorable trade partner or offer?

Sometimes the risk is greater than the reward and you play the hand you're dealt.

I was unaware as were most of medical info that seemed to pop up last day or two IIRC. I liked Taylor but only as a right tackle and why I thought he would go JAGS. I have Max Scharping rated just behind Taylor for RT and way ahead of him at LT. I also have Scharping tied with Cody Ford at RT but thought Ford will play RG. Scharping is still not out of it for Houston IMO as he can play OT/OG both sides. I would have taken Scharping over Howard but neither at 23.

He's kinda out of context , I don't think any of us think he's a bad player , just that they could have gotten better value at the pick than a guy ranked between 58-91 with the 23rd pick , especially when no corners or WR's had been taken & you have a gaping hole at one of those and minor need for the other …. and if you are afraid he's gone by 54/55 move back up and get him …. Unless of course you feel like this guy is gonna be the second coming of Bruce Matthews or Willie Roaf and you just cant take that chance , then by all means take him #23.

Yeah , maybe this project turns into a solid player , that doesn't change the fact that the Texans didn't get "Value" at the pick. They reached and reached FAR. Could have taken the #1 WR or #1 CB off the board and gotten this guy at pick 54 / 55 or later.

One Path to the Draft, @BuckyBrooks had Darnell Savage as a guy sneaking into the 1st and I had Tytus Howard. This isn’t totally shocking at all.

From the Senior Bowl footage I watched of him, he locked his man down every time. The one thing I did notice from that game is when the QB leaves the pocket, and starts scrambling, Howard lets his man go. He doesn't continue the play to the whistle. That could be a problem with Watson as QB since he leaves the pocket so often. I believe it's a fixable problem though. Overall, from what I've seen, he looks like he could be a better choice than the guy (whom I shall not name) that went the pick before. Even though he is still pretty raw, he was still one of the best OT options in this draft.

No I saw and guess I should clarify when I said LZ believes his own tea leaves. I meant he thinks his evaluations and study time makes him better but sometimes many of those tweeting do same. It was a silly comment on his part.

Just to go on the record since I’m posting positive info on the pick, I am not saying he is the next coming of Bruce Matthews...HOWEVER, NFL Draft analysts and media analysts are so out of touch with NFL warrooms and their “true” rating systems. Never assign a player a value based on made up numbers like 17th best tackle or 8th best corner or 177th Best Player Available.

The numbers that matter are measured at the combine and found in game logs for the positions that record stats. Each team weights these numerical values differently.

One team has Simmons as a top 5 pick. Others have him completely off their board because he got a two piece and a biscuit in on a girl on the ground after breaking up a fight. Titans take him at 19 and he may not play this year. Numbers are subjective and should be viewed in that light.

For sure, but remember one thing...one of those draft analysts is now a GM. Do we think Mayock’s methods suddenly underwent a massive transformation? Was he simply regurgitating before?

I ask that last in all honesty as most of the big draft gurus are pretty close in their evaluations year-in and year-out.

It’s what rubs me the wrong way about LZ’s Twitter response. If LZ though so damn highly of him, then why didn’t Tytus even make his personal top 5 OT list?

What I hope I just saw: BOB and Gaine aligned and seeing things in players that others don't that finally piece together the puzzle of the master planned offense we've been waiting to see.

Howard has the potential to be a good starting tackle, whether it's the right or left side. He is a prospect that needs to be taught good hand placement and technique. He also needs to build more strength in the weight room.
The thing about being a prospective starter is he needs to be taught.
Herein lies the problem. The one teaching him would be Mike Devlin. I don't trust Devlin at all with prospects. He could take an all pro future hall of fame best tackle in the league and turn him into some one who couldn't block grandma who uses a walker even if he had 10 minutes to hold her off.
I still wish Devlin would have been fired this off season. Don't understand at all why he's still with the team. He's a terrible line coach. Not even good enough to coach a peewee league.

I’m not a LZ fan or follower in all honesty so I won’t comment there. The posts you shared show he is high on his opinion, most of these guys are for “ratings and revenue.”

I’m going to hold my tongue on Chucky and his sidekick Mikey. Well maybe not...I don’t like the Ferrell pick at all, and he took a RB at 1.24 when his team has a lot of other needs and I don’t think Jacobs was that much better than other options available. I actually applauded the trades and moves they made to get the draft collateral, however I think they definitely did not maximize that collateral.

That's a damn good question ….

If Davenport is the other starter , Davenport almost has to play on the left side cause he stinks on the right …. its crazy how his footwork gets messed up and he takes false steps on the right but not on the left.

But …. can Davenport improve upon last year ?! That entire OL was abysmal. Maybe Davenport is relegated to the swing tackle spot & Kalil starts , he's been an LT and was a pretty solid player prior to injury.

No idea how this plays out , hell he might not start …. we could see Davenport & Kalil.

STRENGTHS

—Still shows the athletic ability and footwork of a tight end after moving from that position as a redshirt freshman.

—Could have potential at guard and right tackle while developing into a left tackle in the NFL. He has already shown the ability to get to the second level and move linebackers.

—Level-of-competition questions will come up, but Howard handled himself very well at the Senior Bowl and against Auburn.

—Excellent mover who shows natural athleticism when asked to slide, mirror or pull in both run and pass blocking situations.

—Feet never stop moving at the point of attack, which allows him to be an impactful drive blocker.

—Pad level and body control are very good.

WEAKNESSES

—Limited playing time and experience playing tackle. Howard did not start playing tackle until his sophomore year of college.

—A lack of upper-body strength shows up on his punch. A lack of lower-body strength shows up when he is asked to anchor. As a result, he is exposed by the bull rush.

—You can tell he has added a lot of bulk very quickly. Needs to convert bulk to strength.

—Hand use is developing but still needs a lot of work. Needs improvement on counters against chops.

OVERALL

Howard might get the developmental label because he's coming from a small school, but he's closer to ready for the NFL than you might think. If drafted by a team that places a premium on the tackle moving upfield and battling more speed than power rushers, he could be an instant starter. His upside is perhaps the highest of any tackle in the class.

It’s pretty easy actually. None of us can really evaluate his talent/potential and how that compares to other players. Some can have a better informed opinion than others, but there is a reason NFL talent evaluators are well payed and spend a lot of time on this. And none of us know, how the draft boards of other teams look like. Maybe every other team in the first round was cursing when we took him . Maybe every other team was laughing.

The thing is: you want to feel good about a pick. And you do feel good about a pick if at least one of two things happen:

1. It‘s a player you really like
2. It‘s a player most news sites liked and thought, this pick was a really good value pick.

Right now most draft grades for this pick are bad. Right now, most of us don‘t know this guy. That‘s why this sucks. Doesn‘T mean it was a bad pick though - and doesn‘T mean it was a reach. Still, I would have been thrilled, if we got Dillard, even if we gave up another 2nd for him. Now, I‘m bummed. Time will tell the real story.

Thanks for posting that …. I didn't feel like digging all that up.

Basically he's outside the top 50 on all but one source and outside the top 100 on several.
 
On the radio after the pick the 610am crew stated that Mike Devlin loved Tytus Howard and alluded that this was basically a pick for/by Mike Devlin, Gaine and O'Brien allowed Devlin to pick who he wanted. Remind me again of all the O-line talent that Devlin has developed since he got here?
 
Went with option #4 …. don't think he was value for the pick being outside the top 50 prospects on all but one draft site.

They had their pick of the litter at CB & WR - None off the board at that point.

If they really liked him that much , they could have moved up with a 2nd and X to get him and their choice at cb/wr.

I said it in an earlier post and I'll say it again.
I don't trust Devlin at all with prospects. He could take an all, pro future hall of fame, best tackle in the league and turn him into some one who couldn't block grandma who uses a walker, even if he had 10 minutes to hold her off.
I still wish Devlin would have been fired this off season. Don't understand at all why he's still with the team. He's a terrible line coach. He's not even good enough to coach a peewee league much less be allowed to evaluate and request talent on a pro level.
To answer your question, he hasn't developed anyone. He has had good draft picks and free agents to put in front of all of the Texans quarterbacks and he has yet to put together a decent O-line. I have thought all along that it wasn't the player's lack of talent, it's Devlin's serious lack of coaching ability. He turns good players and prospects into garbage.

It's really a shame I can only like your post once, it's exactly how I feel.
 
I'm going to go w/ what I originally thought would/should happen -- that if Dillard slipped to the 18-20 range that they would trade up. For all I know, they tried, so I'm not being overly critical here. I feel like Dillard would have been the starting LT from training camp on. I'm not even sure if Howard is LT or RT or if he starts at either position so to me, it's a pretty drastic difference between the 18-20 pick and our pick at 23. If they don't pull a Rankin on him and get him in the right position straight off and let him learn that position, then we should be fine. I just don't trust their game plan for players and for that reason, I wanted someone that was coach proof.
 
I'm going to give Gain and crew the benefit of the doubt, but it all depends on how round two shakes out. I like what little I have read on Howard and think he will be good to great pending coaching being able to get him up to NFL game speed. If all this other top talent continues to slide, it is still possible to slide up and grab one to further solidify our ranks.

I just have to remember fan sentiment when Brown and Watt where taken, bit my lip, temper my emotions and let it all play out.
 
I'm not happy or upset with the pick

Just watched some highlights on him and my first impression was that at least he looked better than Davenport to me coming out.

I was not wowed by him but I didn't think he sucked

I think he has potential to be a good player.

I'd like to see better pass protection skills but for the most part he stone walled the guys he was blocking in the senior bowl clips.

When I first saw Davenport I could tell he was going to have a lot of trouble with NFL defenders and would need tons of work if tons of work would even help

With this guy I didn't get that immediate impression. Not sure he's going to be really good, looks like he has potential to be...but at worst I think he's an NFL quality also ran.

....which in my book is a step up
 
I think Howard would be off the board by #54, but he is not good value at #23. If he was their 2nd or 3rd rated LT and there were no worthy trade back opportunities, then from the Texans view they had to take him. We shall see if it works.

I was not high on Dillard. He is an excellent finesse pass blocker with great feet and terrible hand placement. No punch...no nasty streak...blah run blocking. Still worthy to be picked early but I dont feel like we missed out.

Makes me think Greg Little has a flaw they didn't like.
Me personally, I take Murphy or Greedy right there but then I would be in another tight situation sweating on my tackle.
The way it stands now though is favourable for us as we can let the board fall to us with consecutive picks.

Just starting this thread but saw him mocked in the early 2nd range. Unless we traded down, he wasn't going to be there at 54. Zero chance.
