2009 Member Mock (Second) Rounds 4-7

With the 118th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, The Houston Texans select:

Kevin Barnes, CB, Maryland

It was between Barnes, Martin, and Munnerlyn for this pick. I also looked at Peerman and Ringer. I didn't like Peerman's fumblitis and I don't think Ringer fits the system, but is a good rb.

For me it was between Barnes and Martin. I didn't like Martin's move from FS. If anyone needs a FS, draft Martin, he is soaring right now and has some great measurables. I also like the fact that Barnes had a faster 10 yard time and a great broad jump.

Via Diehardchris PM with the 119th pick the Baltimore Ravens select… Derek Pegues, FS, Mississippi State.

The Patriots are on the clock.

The New England Patriots select Sherrod Martin, FS, Troy.

I have hit all the positions I wanted too. I have been hoping for the last 15 picks that he will be here, and I got lucky.

With the 121st pick the Atlanta Falcons select Chris Baker, DT, Hampton.

I have been targeting a DT since the first, but haven't had one I liked fall to me. I thought about taking Baker in the 3rd, but thought he would be a reach there. I like him here in the fourth a little more.

I could not believe you passed on him. To each his own I guess, I almost grabbed him in the 3rd but felt OG was a more pressing need. I never thought I would get him here.

From what I have seen, ne was a FS in college. I don't like the transition, and I think he and Barnes had some of the same measurables.

Good pick, bad character...

From CBS:
Baker struggled with off-field incidents at Penn State. He was suspended from the team at the end of the 2007 season and finally dismissed from the Nittany Lions in July 2008 after pleading guilty to two counts of misdemeanor assault and criminal trespass following two fights in 2007. He received two years of probation. Baker showed versatility playing at defensive end in a 3-4 after starting the year at nose tackle for Hampton. He earned first-team All-MEAC honors with 62 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. Baker and his family decided it was time to leave the Pirates after his redshirt junior season, but character concerns follow him into the NFL.

Who else would you guys have gone with at DT? It was before we signed Cody and DT was a huge need IMO. I had Taylor, Magee, Baker and Walker as the highest rated.

I think there were several DT's that are close enough talent wise that you should of waited on that position.

Vance Walker Georgia Tech DT43
Sammie Lee Hill Stillman DT43 DE34
Roy Miller Texas DT43 DT34
Alex Magee Purdue DT43 DE34
Chris Baker Hampton DT43 DT34

Of course that was before we signed Cody.

I have to say that I totally hate youre draft so far but please, PLEASE dont take that personally. You are in the hardest position in this mock. We are all Texans fans and all have our players we want for this team. When we dont get them we arent going to be happy. The only way the majority is going to be happy with our Texans mock is if we Poll our votes. Even then alot of us will think it sucks.

I would also like to say thank you for the time and effort you have put in for this draft while being under such a microscope. I dont think I would want to be in youre position.

How did he last this long? Once you get past the 2nd round safeties (Delmas, Chung, Johnson, etc.) he's my top/favorite safety. Nice grab to get him late in the 4th.

Thanks for that. It's been a little rough lately but this has been a good diversion.

My draft doesn't suck though!!!

I figure nobody cares once a buncha other picks have been made, you know?

Doesn't matter, though. Probably at this point people don't want to read explanations other than the Texans anyway.

I'm happy to see we had a pretty good handful of picks today. Sweet.

Yeah, it wasn't a pressing need for the Ravens, but how could they pass on the guy with Ed Reed aging and the fact that they're just SO defensive minded?

I think the guy is a PLAYER for sure.

Actually I would be interested to hear it if you wouldn't mind posting it. As I said above I really like Pegues and to be honest he seems to fit the Ravens defense perfectly.

If I had stayed in the draft I was gonna take Pegues with the Packers pick earlier.

I considered him for the Packers pick I took over, but I just thought Andre Brown was such a good value, and a slightly bigger need for GB.

FS Derek Pegues, Mississippi State
It's never too early to plan for the post-Ed Reed future. Reed will be 31 in September, and probably still has some very good years left, but as a defense-first team, the Ravens can't pass on what I think is a tremendous value here in Derek Pegues. Yes, Nakamura is a solid backup to Reed, but I think there's room for improvement there, and Nakamura is best suited to coming off the bench from what I read, so I'm not sure he would have been a lock to take over the starting spot once Reed is done. Pegues simply has more playmaking potential, and he's also a good punt returner who could cover for Chris Carr if he goes down or isn't effective.

You are wright youre draft doesnt suck. Sorry I didnt mean for it to sound that way. I just meant I hated it because none of my guys were in it.

IMO it would be alot better draft if it had all muy guys. :) No offence meant in any way.

The Miami Dolphins select Cornelius Lewis OT 6-4, 320 Tennessee State (OG)

A big strong guy who was agile enough to play LT but projects to Guard .

Colts picks so far...

1 Hakeem Nicks WR
2 Eric Wood C
3 Mitch King DE

I don't believe they've addressed their DT need in FA, so maybe that's the pick?

One key "weakness" I see with the Colts is on defense, especially at the DT position. They have undersized DTs (considering they run a Tampa 2, I guess its not all about size) but I still think they should get a BIG run-stuffer or someone that eats space. Here's who I suggest...my personal favorites are in bold and I have included other defensive players I would suggest

1.) Terrance Knighton - Temple - DT

2.) Khalif Mitchell - East Carolina - DT

3.) Kaluka Maiava - USC - OLB

4.) Diyral Briggs - Bowling Green - OLB

5.) Morgan Trent - Michigan - CB

6.) DeAngelo Willingham - Tenn. - CB

DT Vance Walker is a balanced player that has the quickness to shoot gaps without sacrificing strength. He is not great at anything, he is just solid.

In the last 2 years he racked up 78 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, and 4 FF from the DT position.

Played with some good players at GTech and received some good defensive coaching.

I disagree.

The Tampa 2 defense depends on four quick linemen that can get to the QB without help from a blitz, allowing seven guys to stay in coverage.

This leaves a weakness to the power running game, but a 4th round DT isn't going to solve that.

I would pick from Alex Magee, Vance Walker, Roy Miller, or Myron Pryor. These guys are all DT's who are stout against the run but not overpowering. Their real value lies in that they can win one on one match ups and rush the passer.

If you get a big run stuffer then you are essentially changing the style of the defense because you are going to have to blitz in passing situations or you think you can get to the QB with three guys.

A 4th round DT isn't going to make a big enough difference against the run to cancel out what he lacks in pass rush.

This is why I think the Colts pretty much have to get either Raji, Jerry, or Hood in the first two rounds.

I guess it's gonna' be Vance Walker, I vote for him to since most of you guys support him as a good fit for the Colts.
