Raiders to take Russell first, according to sources

It appears the Oakland Raiders have made their choice, and it's JaMarcus Russell. According to two sources, one with the Raiders and one close to Russell, the team called Russell Friday to inform him he would be the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.

The team called Russell on Friday to inform him that he is their player, the sources said. Oakland quietly flew offensive coordinator Greg Knapp to New York on Thursday to meet with Russell and reassure him of his status as the team's preference over Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson and Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn.

Gosselin says the same:

1. OAKLAND RAIDERS

Selection: JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU
Needs: Quarterback, blockers, tacklers

Al Davis has never been a fan of dink-and-dunk football. He wants passers and receivers who can stretch the field. No one stretches it like Russell, who can throw the football 85 yards. The Raiders have started six different QBs in the last four seasons. This position needs to be stabilized.

snippet:
The San Francisco 49ers, one of the more aggressive teams this offseason in terms of acquisitions, enter this weekend's draft with a league-high eight picks in the first four rounds: one first-round selection, a second, two thirds and four fourths.

On the eve of the draft, the Niners already were poised to maximize the value of one of those fourth-round picks.

According to league sources, San Francisco and division rival Seattle are working toward a trade that would send Seahawks wide receiver Darrell Jackson to the Niners in exchange for one of their fourth-rounders, believed to be the Niners' third selection in the round, No. 124 overall. The New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans, whose new general manager Mike Reinfeldt came over from Seattle, are also believed to be talking with Seattle about Jackson.

Mike Mayock is saying that there are serious concerns about Peterson's injury based on his conversations this morning.

Patriots offered the Raiders a 2nd day pick for Randy Moss per Adam Schefter.

The Browns are trying to trade up to #1.

Mike Mayock is saying that there are serious concerns about Peterson's injury based on his conversations this morning.

Goose said yesterday that the injury should not affect Peterson's draft status. His point was that in today's NFL all you really wanted was a player to make it through the rookie contract. HE also said the Peterson is a special talent. All per the local ESPN affliate, Randy Galloway's show.

I do not want Leon Hall. Most mock drafts have us taking Hall. I think he is overated. I hope we pick either Okoye, Levi Brown or jamal Anderson. One of those will fall to us. But not Leon Hall.

Trent Green and the Dolphins are close to getting something done - NFL Network.

Briggs trade on hold per Chicago Sun Times.

I'm good to go. Of course I'm painting and caulking while watching.

Its Russell, followed by Calvin, whom TB will move up to get, followed by Quinn/Peterson..I'm torn.

Im going all out and say that if we stay at 10, we're taking D.Revis....unless AP or Landry fall to us....

Also just read that the Bucs and Lions are close to a deal for the No 2 pick.

10:30 a.m.: Ed Werder just checked in from the omelet station in Oakland. He's reporting via cellphone that the Raiders have been approached with two "serious offers." They've been talking to the Browns about trading down for multiple picks, but the Browns balked when Oakland asked for defensive end Kameron Wimbley. The teams have discussed several players, including Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards. Ed also informed this yet-to-be-named blog that the Raiders are aggressively trying to trade Randy Moss, but that folks from Moss' camp say it's probably not going to happen. Much, much more to come.

Schefter reporting that the Packers are still involved with Randy Moss. The Jets are hungry to move up in the draft for a CB.

Maybe the Raiders will shock everyone and draft someone like Alan Branch first. As dumb as Al Davis is, I wouldn't be completely shocked.

So many boards to choose from now, lol.

there is ..but I may just check in on the official site. I just don't like the lag that sometimes the screen refreshes and sometimes not, I can't imagine what it will be like when 400+ go on there (guests and members)
when our pick is getting close

The UK's here with you! I've got a live draft page open too, we can race each other for scoops!

Thought the first 'clock' started 1700 my time, 1200 yours???

I see 4 minute lag times.

Noon: Just talked to a source with the Raiders who confirmed that JaMarcus Russell will indeed be the No. 1 overall pick. And he doesn't think a trade will take place.

I also just got a call from former Baylor great Trey Wingo, who thinks the Raiders could be making a colossal mistake. Wingo rarely shares these hardcore opinions on ESPN's Wingo Live, but he'll do it on the blog.

Look for Wingo and his crew to show up this afternoon when things start to die down a little bit. The man continues to carry this network.

Someone should keep a tally of how many shots are taken at the Texans for last years draft. (so far I have seen at least 3 commercials).

New Zealand checking in.

Can someone suggest a more foreign fan friendly time for this thing. It is like 4am in the morning here already.... does that make me a little draft obsessed??

Any tips for the best draft tracker or a live radio feed??
