2005 Draft

mid teens is where we will be picking.

QB-set
RB-set
OL-possible but you dont draft a guard/center this high
WR-set but a possible if we cant get a decent 3rd via free agency
TE-set

DT-set but depth needs help
DE-set but depth needs help
OLB-set
ILB-maybe not a big need
CB-set
S-set

Our starters are decent on O but on D we can use depth mainly no glaring needs ATM

I would think DL or secondary is what we need next. 2/3 of our dl and 2/4 of our secondary are hitting the 30 range.

This is of course baring injury and after last week

Agree with everything, BUT Safety set, did you watch the San Diego game, we have a journyman strong safety, and a converted corner at Free. Maybe Earl pans out as the strong of the future, but we could use a good free in the draft. Safety and DL are the two areas that I think really need to be addressed this next year. :twocents:

I would think we would go D-line next year. It is great when you have depth and quality there because that position wears down faster than any other on the team. The Patriots have spent 1st rounders on that position over the last few years and it has worked.

I don't know about the TE position, safety spots, and ILB positions being set. They may be set for now but they are upgradeable, which IMO relates to not being "set".

TE: Bruener is good, but he's getting older, and if Joppru ever recovers then we could be set. Note the if in relation to Joppru.

Safety: A young gun for depth and future replacement is needed. I love Eric Brown in run support, but as we saw Sunday, his coverage skills leaves a little to be desired. He will knock the snot out of you, and I absolutely love that about him.

ILB: Foreman is good, but he is upgradeable.

You dont use a first on a replacement because a guy is old unless you know he wont be with you.

S TE OG C (can argue RB and OLB to)are positions you dont spend mid first round picks on.

If we are that high in the draft than absolutley. A perfect replacement for an ageing Aaron Glenn. A year or two in the nickel back spot where he plays very well at to begin with and he will be ready to go a left corner.

Agreed, I also think that NT has got to be at least a first-day consideration given the question marks that remain about Seth Payne's health (isn't he also going to be a UFA?). Even if he does return to full strength, it would be nice to have a guy like Anttaj Hawthorne to develop behind him as the eventual replacement. I think NT might be the most critical position in 34, especially if you buy into the theory that games are won and lost in the trenches.

I have to say I really do like the team Casserly and crew are putting together, but I just can't see them not trying to get some young depth for the d-line, either through free agency or the draft. Just my :twocents:

I would think we would be looking for future secondary starters rather than D line depth. We have Smith, Walker, Payne front 3. We have Sears, DeLoach, and Ioane backing them up. We have Robinson and Glenn on the corners, and Coleman and Brown at safety spots. Walker and Smith just signed contracts and our backups on the D line got a lot of experience last year when the starters went down. Coleman is in his last year of his contract, Glenn is not getting any younger, and Brown is looking pretty bad.

... depending on what the draft holds...

1st round...

Offense, Depending on what happens with Joppru, a top flight Tight end could be used...someone that can both block and catch.

Defensive line. Gary Walker and Seth Payne are no spring chickens and both have had injury concerns... probably is priority number 1.

Linebackers are relatively young and mobile, if Wong can't provide a pass rush another rusher might be taken.

Defensive backs, Another Saftey would be a smart pick, Aaron Glenn isn't getting younger.

2nd Round....

Offensive line here, maybe wide reciever depending on if we keep bradford or replace him with a free agent.

If i had to name a name right now.. Antrelle Rolle... Miami..... Not only have we, and most of the NFL had luck with miami players, but he is brother of a pro-bowl corner Samari Rolle. He will be an impact corner for years. He can spend a year learning under Glenn and play on nickel packages. Then him and Dunta can shut everyone else down.

Second round i'd go with D-lineman Chris Canty from Virginia....

and O line with one of our 2 3rd round picks.

Saftey with our second 3rd rounder...

tight end with our 4th rounder

wide reciever with our 5th round pick...

its more the priority and availability than individual players i can target, and of course someone on our team might and will step up and come from no where like DD did last year (this time last year i was so concerned we would never be able to rush the ball) But at this point, (not really counting the Chargers game) this is what i would be looking towards next year...

I know people are gonna knock me for drafting 2 CBs with 2 consecutive 1st round picks, but what team wouldn't want 2 shut down corners?

Let's wait and see if he's not in prison by the next draft. Felony assault on a law enforcement officer is generally considered to be an easy way to get there.

You dont use a first on a replacement because a guy is old unless you know he wont be with you

What? I would think that at this time we don't have a glaring weakness other than depth at certain positions. You certainly can use a first round pick on someone that will be a starter for you in a year or two. I'm not talking about projects here. Jay Foreman could be replaced and in turn Foreman provides excellent depth. You telling me you don't use 1st round picks on eventual starters? Or are you sticking to the BPA theory even if the BPA happens to be a QB or RB? At this point we need neither, so IMO it would be useless to draft a QB or RB with our first. That's all I'm saying about the 2005 draft. That's putting the cart before the horse, and chances are by the end of this year we will all have a pretty good opinion of what we need with our first pick.

I think that CC and DC are will pay more attention to what athletes are available on the board when we are on the clock as opposed to focusing on a specific position. I say this looking in a crystal ball so to speak since we will really have to wait to see how the team preforms over the season during the different phases of the games.

I agree that a DL or DB might be in order, but I personally would like to see us take a top flight LB (inside or outside). If it's an ILB, ok, let him fight Foreman and Wong for playing time and learn the game from Sharper. If it's an OLB, ok, let him learn to rush the passer from a 3 point stance every now and then...that's got to be a heck of a lot easier than teaching a DE to cover the pass. Bottom line is take the best LB athlete on the board...guys that are going to be players will find a way to play, regardless of how stacked you think a position is barring maybe QB.

I also like the idea of a second stud WR playing opposite AJ. That would allow Gaffney to remain in the slot, where he seems better suited.

Having a good tight end for quick dump passes and run blocking will really improve the offensive production of any team. Dalllas found that out with Jason Witten and an average quarterback at best "Quincy Carter"...most of the passes made last year were quick dumps to the tight end because of QC's lack of accuracy. We still made it to the playoffs. However I dont really understand the Texans tight end situation but some of you seem to think it could be improved.

Im thinking Houston would be wise to look for some good defensive lineman. The line had a difficult time putting pressure on the quarterback in Sunday's game. Ofcourse one game doesnt really mean anything but it seems that drafting a couple defensive lineman would still be a wise choice.

Is that why Oak got Gallery?

Aaron Glenn will need to be replaced in 2-3 years. A new CB like Webster or Rolle would be perfect for us.

Geka not sure I agree with you about not using a first rounder to upgrade your depth. Most seem to agree on MB that QB, OL, RB & starting DL is set for 05. I think starting linebackers are set unless Babin or Peek fail. Receiver is set but a ? on Bradford for next year so a first could be used there if a player beckons. I suggested to 610 that we trade Bradford nowto perhaps KC for what would be a low round 1st but was told Bradford is only worth a third round if that. We should be set at corner.

That leaves two safeties. Remember many "experts" this years draft said only a Roy Williams type safety should be chosen in first. Is there one of those on the horizon? Too early to guess. So.. if we use a first, to me it will be 1. A wide receiver with burning speed & good hands 2. A safety of William's category or 3. Depth.

Any body else agree?

qb: set, but look for the texans to possibly take a shot at James Killian out of Tulsa, Jon Buetjer out of Illinois, or Danny Wimprine out of Memphis in the 5th round

rb: set again but underrated tb Dewhitt Betterson from Troy St. might catch their eye at the combine

fb: set, but texans might bring in texas fullback will matthews as an undrafted free agent

wr: this is where i think we'll go in the 1st round. lots of good receivers again with Michigan Braylon Edwards, Mike Williams, Miami (OH) Martin Nance, Cal's Geoff McArhtur and West Virginias Chris Henry. I feel that they'll go with Nance just because he is a big playmaker

te: nope

tackle: maybe, if they go 2nd round here, go Rob Pettiti at Pitt

guard: no

center: no

gotta go

Matt Jansen
NFLDraftBlitz.com

Well remember we have 1 first 1 second and 2 3rd round picks. Those are the slots where we can pick up an impact player...

As long as i werent passing up a stud, my priority would go....

1st round Defensive line... Walker and Payne are getting older, Payne is coming off a major injury, Walkers injury isn't as severe but he's older. Robaire Smith really helps out adding youth, We get a young stud, he can back up all 3 positions his first year, and move into a slot the following year. Or a big nose tackle like Wilfork this last year would be a great move, although 2 gap defenders can be found with success in later rounds, I think San Fran got a steal with Sopaoga in the 4th round.

2nd round....Saftey. Coleman will be a free agent this summer and might still want corner money or might get a chance to make more playing corner elsewhere. Brown, McCree, doesn't make me comfortable at the saftey position, and Glenn Earl is coming off an injury as a rookie still has to prove alot. mid secound round when we pick most safteys minus the Roy Williams, Ed Reed, Sean Taylor types.

3rd round... Offensive line... you can never have enough quality linemen and quarterbacks

3rd round .... Tight End, depending on if Joppru makes it back or not, if he is able to play and plays well, then maybe wide reciever or corner.

DEFENSE BaBY!!!! We need LINEBACKERS and D LINEMEN!!!! Also Safety. We got by in our first year because no one took us seriously. But we need to make changes. We have too many injuries on the D-LINE. We need to get people to come in to challenge those guys to eventually take their spots.

We have to see what Carr does if he sucks we draft a QB. I think we need a DT to be there if Payne goes down again and again because who ever hears DeLoach being called for a sack...ha ha!!!!! u don't. We do need LBs as well. Our RBs are straight, our

If Kris Brown keeps throwing his body around we may need to look for a kicker soon.

These are 4 guys I follow because I love UM and UT

Just get a guy from Miami and everything will turn out okay...
Rolle (D-Rob and Rolle???) or Everett (unless Jappru proves something this year)
Or get a University of Texas guy
Derrick Johnson (I dont want to be picking that high, though) or Rodrique Wright (he is 6-5, 315 pounds!!!!)...

QB - depends on what they do with Banks. Word has it they are concerned about Ragone, which is why they drafted Symons. Do not think Ragone is ready for 2nd string, but I would put my money on Symons. Super quick release, great reads and tough as nails. You cannot appreciate how good he is to you actually see him. And...he has no lack of confidence and is super smart. Watched him from Cy Creek all the way through college.
DL- need a marquee player or two here.
Secondary - still feel there are a few holes to fill
OL- late picks possible, but it looks like we are progressing
RB - you can never have too many good running backs
ST - I love JJ but he does not have the breakawy speed and does not contribute on the receiving side. Welker for SD was a steal as a FA. The guy can play and is a good receiver like Grebet for the Jets.

Just my opinion!

I suppose we could bundle up a few of our picks including a second round pick and trade up a few spots in the draft to select someone who we could have gotten anyway had we just waited until our pick in the second round. Oh wait, we did that already.

Why would we select a QB??? We spent a 3rd round pick on Ragone so he isnt going anywhere and BJ Symons will be back next year and will be the 3rd string QB if Banks leaves. And Banks wants a starting job, where is he going to get one??? San Fran is the only one I can think of. Miami maybe???

Why would the go with a WR. They have star in AJ. We spent a 2nd round pick on Gaff and he can make plays if they throw him the ball. And the coaching staff loves Armstrong. And dont forget that Palmer said that Starling has more untapped potential on the team, including AJ. And what if Bradford stays???

I dont see us going tackle so high. We just signed Wade to a big deal and the coaching staff is giving Wand the starting job to protect Carr's blindside so they much have a lot of faith in him...

I think this depends on when McKinney is going to be a FA. If he has only one more year after this year, they might take one high to groom for a year and not throw him into the fire. And then they dont have to worry about McKinney leaving after next year without a center ready to replace him...

Getting Rolle out of Miami would be great but I would have to say a Strong Saftey or a left guard. I also like Jackson Apple out of A&M because he is a warrior. But, a dominate saftey or lineman (meaning right guard) would be a great pick up in the draft. By the way, could Rolle play saftey, he definently has the size.

Glenn Earl is the Strong Saftey. He would have been of been a 2nd round pick if not for his injury so I dont see us taking a saftey early...

I dont see us taking a guard because Pitts has looked nice at LG and Weigert is our RG but I dont know how old he is...

If Coleman dissapoints or we don't re-sign him, I say we get Thomas Davis. If you don't know him he played linebacker his first year at UGA and now has converted to safety. He is big, a ball hawk, and blows people up.

right now i would have to say safety but it is way too early in the season, maybe aCB to groom as Glenns replacement in the 2nd.

I believe that we should focus again on the defensive side of the ball and should mainly focus on D line and inside linebacker. One person that I look forward to watching this year is Haloti Ngata out of Oregon. He is a DT that is 6'5'' 350 lbs that has run a 4.87! Was the top defensive line player coming out of high school a couple of years ago and decided on Oregon instead of BYU. Its been a tough two years for the kid as he lost his father in a car accident and then tore his ACL in the first game last year. He certainly would occupy two blockers as a NT and from a physical size standpoint reminds me of Ted Washington. Seems a little bit like Andre as he is quiet and lets his play do the talking. It will be interesting to see how he holds up this year, but with the Texans having no problem selecting people with ACL injuries, Im sure he will get some consideration if he declares.

Here are some links to some more info:

PS I wouldnt mind taking Rolle if he would fall to us though!

I posted this on hpf.com a few weeks ago...pre-season and the 1st game have done nothing to change my mind.

If the draft were today;

1) defensive line:

Walker is older
Payne, Sears, and DeLoach all UFA after thisyear.
Even if resigning need dynamic youth at position

2)Defensive back:

Coleman UFA, Glenn Older, and Always should be looking at CBs.

3)Tight End - Miller and Bruener not long term answer: joppru injuried.

4) ILB- Have not addressed through the draft, get one to develop for a year or two before contracts and age become issues.

5)WR- Bradford's contract plus a dynamic number 2 to #80 could make offense special

6)OL-seems stocked here, but the early reads are that OLmen maybe the strength of the draft..Also get ready to replace Zach and Steve in a year or two

7)RB- If DD nagging injuries and Hollings fumbling prove to be more than pre-season concerns this could shoot up the chart quickly. If not a mid-to late round pick for depth sake could still be in order.

IMO, 1-3 are the top priorities. 4-7 are all close where flipping them around doesn't matter.

I think the strategy is Best player available with restrictions.... we dont take a QB in the first round.

I think that we do have some positions that if you look a couple of years down the road, the time it takes a draft pick to really develop when they are not thrown into a starting job.... ( a sign we are growing as a franchise and have almost completely shed the expansion label.)

Defensive line jumps out at me the most. Walker is already on the wrong side of 30 and is coming off an injury. Payne is about to hit 30 and is coming of a much bigger injury. Robaire Smith is the real savior of this line with his energy and youth. Deloach and Ioane are good backups but neither will take over in a couple years or less when Payne and Walker are gone. Its definately something i would draft with one of our 4 first day picks.

Tight End We have 1 31 year old who so far is pretty good. 1 who has never seen the field, and might never. and another that is basically a bigger slower wide reciever. If we had the opportunity to get a top flight tight end like Heap, Shockey, Winslow with one of our earlier picks i dont see another position that could come in and provide an immediate impact. Bruenner is good, but he is again on the wrong side of 30.

Saftey Coleman will be a free agent and could get an offer to play corner elsewhere or more money, might not want to accept saftey money, and he is 30 years old. Eric Brown is 31 and isn't a star by any means. Glen Earl is supposed to be much better than his draft position but until he gets over the injury he still is a big question mark, and another saftey along side him could really help out.

Wide Reciever Bradford is a free agent and will either play himself out of our price range, play poorly and not get a contract, or resign or not.... he is a big question mark. Gaffney played well in week 1, but a number 2 reciever he is not. You can never have enough young wide outs, maybe we can get someone to challenge JJ for kick and punt returns...

I picked 4 slots.. cause we have 4 first day picks next year.... so as long as we target the best player available and still try to fill these slots we'd be doing alot better.

I say take another Corner - and after he develops into a shut-down type, move Glenn to free- safety. He could play another 4 - 5 years there if he wants to.

i think that we need to go defense, and you can make a case for any position on d. as of right now we don't have a defensive play maker

d-line: you can never have too many line men, as we found out last year. someone like orien harris out of miami if he declares or marcus spears would be a good pick. marcus is big, fast and can drop in coverage if you need him to.

inside lb: sharper is a pro bowl caliber player but i think he could upgrade on foreman. yeah he makes a lot of tackles but he never really makes the game turning play. michael boley out of southern miss is very good, if you saw the nebraska game he was all over the field. i was really high on lance mitchell before is injury (even better than derrick) and as look very good this year

outside lb: we have a lot of good but unproven young players here. babin is still learning so i will give him a pass but we might want to look at the other side. wong is solid but is just like foreman, he did make that sack sunday though. peek could be good, i would feel a lot better if we had someone like derrick johnson coming off the edge.

cb: we have solid starters for the next few years, but you guys said it, glenn is getting old. dunta is going to have some problems in his rookie season but will learn and should be great. cory webster is good but after watching him against arkansas state i think antrel is the better corner right now. two really good yound corners will set up our defense for years. also antrel is not the brother of samari, they're not related and on the felony charges, those were dropped before practice started, so he doesn't have any legal trouble.

safety: this might be our weak point on the defense. brown looks almost lost in coverage and coleman might be leaving after this year. earl was very good but who knows after his injury. the georgia guy beat me to it, thomas davis would give us that defensive playmaker at safty that sean taylor would have given us. he can is good coverage and can light some people up. brimmer would also be a good player to get.

I am shocked to even see the many responses in this section...It was only game FREAKING one. That said, it was a very disappointing game one. Undefeated the rest of the way baby :headbang:

Actually, it has as more to do with plenty of people being draftniks than people giving up on this season.

I hope the Texans trade their 1st round pick for (at least) a 3rd in 2005 and a 1st in 2006. They had extra picks in their first three drafts and have drafted thirteen players on the first day of the draft. I think they should look to upgrade their depth, not draft for rookie starters. In prior years, rookies were handed starting jobs. Now, rookies will have to compete for starting jobs with players with several years experience in the system.

The trade would still give them four first day picks and position them with two first round picks in 2006 when the players who they drafted in 2002 will generally have four accrued years of service and be free agents.

One guy that caught my eye watching a game last night (replay) was Mathias Kiwunika (6'7" 249 lbs). He's a DE for Boston College that I think could dominate as an OLB in our 3-4. He seems like a high motor player and also seems to have great character. He might be a little lanky though for a 3-4 LB because of his height.

Career statistics
2003: 83 tackles, 13 sacks, 16.5 tackles for loss, 24 quarterback hurries and five broken up passes.
2002: 44 tackles, five sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss, one interception, two quarterback hurries and two broken up passes

They had a short interview clip of him at some point in the game, his grandfather was elected the Prime Minister of Uganda in 1961 and assassinated in 1972. He seems like a smart guy that could really take over a D.

Like I said he may not fit in with us too well though because of the height/weight ratio he has (better suited to get heavier and play the 4-3), and he might go too high for us to take a chance on another conversion prospect.

Just found this: Here's HPF's analysis:
Mathias Kiwunika

Edit: I've seen him at both 249lbs and 261lbs, HPF lists him as 249 so I'll go with that.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this guy yet, but I think he'd be a great addition to our team as a DE. Marcus Spears of LSU. He's got the size ( 6'4" - 297 )to be a 3-4 DE already, and he could be a big pick up for us. Just a thought, but no telling how high he could go.

The only trades I've seen for a 1st round pick in your scenario is for a 2nd round pick that year and a 1st rounder the following year. A 3rd round pick is too low to make that deal.

And I’m not seeing your argument. Wouldn't you be asking a rookie to replace a vet in '06? Why not draft the guy in '05, and teach him the system for a year? Unless the Texans wind up with another top 10 pick (I can't believe I even said that), I would prefer rookies not to get a free ride to the starting lineup.

I sort of agree. That's why I said 'at least'. If our first rounder was late enough (unlikely) and the third early enough, a 3rd would be reasonable.

We have a lot of guys we are developing now and would add 4 2nd and 3rd rounders in 2005. When we start losing some 4 yr accured guys, or other starters, we could replace some with developed players off the depth chart and look for a top ten draft pick to be an immediate starter/impact player, by trading our two first round picks to move up.

If we want to be a franchise that wins game, the only way to have early first round picks is to have multiple first round picks to trade.

Just a thought. Obviously, it's way too early to know this makes sense, but I don't know that our team will need a late first rounder for each of several years (which will happen, if we win).

you must remember that both Haloti Ngata and Mathias Kiwi are juniors and unlikely to leave early.

Some great sleepers you will know next season for sure:

Quarterback:
Charlie Frye, Akron. If you dont watch college football, odds are you've never heard of this guy. Could end up being the 1st qb selected.

Runningback:
Earl Charles, Marshall. Originally commited to Miami, but due to grades couldnt make it. Reminds me a lot of Ricky Williams

Fullback:
Rich Demers, Massachusetts. One of the best offensive fullbacks I've ever seen play the game. A team will be blessed to have this guy on their team.

Wide Receiver:
Vincent Jackson, Northern Colorado. Unheard of by most in country, but I think he's one of the best. At 6'6 235 and a 4.49 40, he could be tough to stop.

Tight End:
Jimmy St. Louis, Murray State
Transfer from Auburn that reminds me a lot of Alge Crumpler. Great character as well.

Center:
Jelani Clement, Hampton
BY FAR the best 1-aa prospect this year. He is an all american and at 6'2 315, would be a great pickup by any team. HINT HINT, the Redskins are highly interested. So if we want this guy, pick him before they do in the 3rd.

Guard:
Cedrick Johnson, Clemson
at 6'4 325, one of the most dominant run blockers in the nation.

Tackle:
Nick Kazcur, Toledo
Will be a great blindside protector for an NFL team one day

Defensive End:
Walter Curry, Albany State
Could end up a 2nd round pick. Great pass rusher and can get to the qb

Defensive Tackle:
Lynn McGruder, Oklahoma
Very limited playing time, but with Dvorcek out of the picture, he will prove that he is worth a 2nd round selection.

Outside Linebacker:
Kevin Talley, Norfolk State
One of the best tacklers in the country

Middle Linebacker:
Boomer Grigsby, Illinois State
One of my favorite players in the country. Makes plays everywhere on the field. He held his own against Minnesota making some big stops on Marion Barber.

Cornerback:
Bryant McFadden, Florida State
Has the tools to be the next great corner in the NFL. The question is, will he use them?

Free Safety:
Oshiomogho Atogwe, Stanford
Not only is his name impressive, his play is as well. One of the best safeties in the country and gets no credit being on the west coast.

Strong Safety:
Trawick Boger, Tulane
Too aggressive at times, but gets the job done when its on the line.

these are needs as posted by NFL Blitz-

- Left Tackle (Seth Wand)
- Left Guard (Chester Pitts)
- Nose Tackle (Seth Payne)
- Inside Linebacker (Jay Foreman)
- Strong Safety (Eric Brown)

seems like the Texans could have traded down & still taken Wilfork last year & picked up the center drafted @ pick #45 by Oakland Jake Grove 6-3 300 Virgina Tech thus solidifying both lines. Hopefully Glen Earl will be the answear at SS. Dunta Robinson & Babin will both be good players if not great and this year (2005) the Texans will draft a stud DT with the first pick.

1. Rodrique Wright, Texas
2. Anttaj Hawthorne, Wisconsin
3. Orien Harris, Miami (FL)
4. Haloti Ngata, Oregon

dont listen to us at blitz, most of those guys have no clue

Haloti, Rodrique, and Orien are all juniors and will not come out

Antaaj isn't really physical enough to be a 3-4 NT, he will be a stud 4-3 dt however

McGruder of Oklahoma would not be a good fit with the Texans. He was kicked off the Tennessee Volunteers for selling marijuana. Anyone that can't play for Phil Fulmer has no chance of ever playing for Dom Capers.

For the same reason, there is no way the Texans will ever have anything to do with Rolle of Miami.
