What kind of coaching changes should we make?

Grid

All Pro
I was gonna make this a poll where you can make multiple selections, but didnt know how, or if it was even possible :D.. so here are your choices.

Defensive Coordinator
Defensive Line Coach
Special Teams Coach
Linebackers Coach
Wide Receivers Coach
Secondary Coach

I did not include Quarterbacks coach or Offensive Coordinator cause those are Kubiak's job and we arent replacing him :D. I also didnt include Oline coach because if Sherman wants to stay, we are gonna keep him.. and if he doesnt want to stay, then it is a given that we will be replacing him.. so not much point on debating it here.

My selections for coaching changes are:

Wide Receivers Coach: I know that there is a bit of that "Good Old Boys Syndrome" going on here, but it is for that very reason that Capers is a defensive coordinator again, so I hope Kubes wont fall into that same trap. Just, move the kid somewhere else..make him an assistant, im sure you can find a job for him that will still put him to use and get a new WR coach. The reason I think it is important to replace him is because

A) Andre still catches with his body.
B) Jerome Mathis is hard headed.

Id like to see us bring in a real veteran WR coach that can break Andre of his habit and teach him to catch with his hands, and also get through to Mathis and make him a valuable part of our offense.

My next selection is the Defensive Line Coach. It was a toss up between this guy, and just replacing the Defensive Coordinator all-together. In the end I decided that Richard Smith has not been horrible, and I know he has an aggressive philosophy to defense, and I think he will bring that to the table here eventually.. but I didnt see much technical improvement from Mario Williams all season long.. and I didnt see Babin and Peek put to very good use either. Maybe there are other factors involved, but better safe than sorry in my opinion.. in my 5 years as a Texans fan, ive seen enough "coaches ruining promising prospects" to never want to see it again, ever. So lets make sure we have someone training Williams right. If Williams can became a hall of fame DE, it may help unruffle the feathers of the VY and Bush supporting branch of the Texans fanbase.

Finally, my last selection is the Defensive Backs coach. Now, I know we all like Hoke.. he did wonders with Robinson coming out of college, and we kept him for that reason. However, since then he has been responsible for 2 unexcusable mishaps.

A) The trade for Philip Buchanan
B) The steady deterioration of Robinson's cornerbacking abilities.

Again, I dont want to see a young prospect ruined.. and if the Philip Buchanan fiasco isnt reason enough to replace him, then just go back and look at the terrible angles our CBs have been taking on WRs all year long.

That is my list of Coaching changes we need to make in the offseason. What about you?

Wide Receivers Coach
Secondary Coach
D-Line Coach

WR-the coach doesnt have enough expierence, and we need a guy who is strick and can help AJ more

DB-everyone has loved john hoke, even i like him, but he just hasn't got it done

D-Line-well that part sucks bad, so replace him

I did not include Quarterbacks coach or Offensive Coordinator cause those are Kubiak's job and we arent replacing him :D.

I am all for Kubiak, but his boy Troy Calhoun does not get a pass. If Kubiak wants to run the offense or QBs then put his name there. Much like we did not get the Capers D with Fangio's name at DC I want accountability. We should learn from our own history and expect better when hiring Coordinators with accolades.

Change out Little Shanny. Bring in Jerry Gray for Smith, if he does not take the Texas DC job, replace Hoke (secondary), replace Harris (RB).

Talent is clearly the main issue with the Texans. If we get more talent in one segment of the game and still have issues, then we need to re-examine the situation. Keep them all for now.

no, not searching for sacrificial lambs.

Are you saying that you DONT think its a bad thing that our young WRs coach cant teach Andre to catch with his hands?

You DONT mind that our DBs take bad angles and that Drob has gotten worse every year?

You disagree that Mario Williams never improved technically throughout the season?

If I wanted a sacrificial lamb, id have been for replacing the DC, or giving someone besides Kubiak the reins of the offense.

Fact of the matter is we have some really "questionable" coaching choices.. guys that we are "giving a chance", and im not so sure that this franchise can afford to give people chances right now. We need to be very solid with our coaching choices.. and these 3 guys are the ones that I think arent being very solid for us.

If I could only replace one it would be Hoke, because he has a longer track record here for evaluation. Richard Smith would have been my fist choice earlier in the year, but the defense has improved.

I don't know about the offensive coaches - the O is so messed up I can't tell if it is the coordinator, the position coaches, or Kubiak.

This team shouldn't change anybody off the coaching staff. This team needs some consistancy(sp) as far as coaching staff and players and changing the coaching staff again after one year is just stupid.

People just need to call the heck down. If people would remember the crap we had to go threw last year compared to this year. People the Texans only won two games last year and looked horrible doing it. This defense is better than last year. People need to rememebr that the O-line this year has lost 3 of its original starters. The Texans lost their RB before the season even started and before everybody says well they should have taken a RB with the 1st pick, my question to them when was the last time a RB was taken #1?

David Carr is a better QB than he was last year. David will be the QB for this team next year. Kubiak believes in Carr and believes Carr is good enough to play in this league but needs to get Carr protection and a running game to slow down some of the blitzs.

As a PSL holder for 5 years now, I am more excited about this team in years. They have an offensive head coach that controls the offense and lets his defensive coorinator run his defense.

If someone would have asked you at the beginning of the year, would you take 5 or 6 wins from this team would you take it? I would have and they are almost there.

JMO, but I've really questioned Kubiak's choice as a WR Coordinator. This choice has never even been a position coach at any level (JH,HS,JC,COl,PROS), let alone a coordinator. I have to wonder about the 'respect' factor between this rookie coach and his players because of his lack of experience and the fact 'he has not been there and done that.'

However, though he's not going anywhere, my 'biggest' disappointment has been with Kubiak. The problem is compounded here because Gary got on his 'soap box' from the get go and made promises to us he was unable to keep. I never ever in my wildest imagination though that his results on the field would mirror--almost identical--those of Caper's last year. We have seen more 'promise' from the defense than the offense and--in no way--has Kubiak's results translated into an 'offensive guru.'

Where did the 'unravelling' of the offense start? Honestly, IMO, everywhere. We've made bad personnel desisions and-like Capers-Kubiak doesn't change starters unless they're hurt. Effective game planning/adjustments to that game plan--ala our first 4 yrs--are non-existent. Kubiak promised to 'coach' one game at a time but has 'reeled' out the same 'generic' plan week after week.

JMO, but Kubiak's 'coaching not to lose' philosophy has me in a state of numbness--too, as other posters have noted. are the 'weak' schemes on both sides of the ball, the poor techniques (angles,depths,tackling,etc.),etc.

We bring in TEs, a 2nd WR, a rec FB, a 3rd WR--all who have shown they can catch the ball, but we seldom use them--Moulds has 1 or 2 catches in the last 2 games? And, because he plays the offense 'so close to the vest.' small problems are magnified---

AJ and David. We saw Sunday from the Titans how much difference ball 'placement' and 'catching' with the hands can make. From the end zone, it was a thing of 'beauty' to see the ball thrown to where only the Titan could catch it without having to fend off defenders using just his extended hands. In contrast, AJ was facing Carr trying to catch his under thrown ball with his body and 3 defenders on him...

In closing, 2 things have to have 'absolutely' rocked Kubiak's world this season. First, this is not Denver--what worked there is a long way from working here. Second, coaching Carr has not been 'as easy' as he thought it would be. From the 'mental' problems to the weak technical skills to the same mistakes over and over again from Carr, this has not gone the way Gary thought it would and, IMO, that makes sense because-- I'm still 'shaking my head.' There is still so much work to do to try and 'right this ship.' Have we put into place any kind of foundation upon which to build? Remember, this is not an expansion team any more...we've got to raise our 'expectations' and start by not comparing this team to '05...instead, how about '04?

Obviously Hoke has to go. He can't even teach his DB's how to turn and look for the football. Their technique is horrible.

Sherman will be gone. We have to get a good OLine coach if this offense is ever going to work. And a good QB also, but that's for a different thread.

The only coach that should be safe is Marciano. Non one else really earned their money this past season.

Not to call you out but I disagree that the Titans offense was a thing of beauty, if that's what you are saying. I thought VY was baled out alot by receivers that made adjustments and went up and got the ball. AJ does not do that. He always lets the ball come to him. On long balls his hands are almost always at his waist or chest. He needs to be coached up. As far as coaching changes I think the WR have underperformed (all of them) and have always thought Hoke was overated for our secondary.

Why should we make any coaches changes if it's the Quarterbacks fault? Should we just change the QB and we head into the playoffs?

I like our defensive line coach. Given that we have a bunch of guys at DT who weren't at camp with us, he's done pretty well. He's taught a lot of guys who are great in the league and they give him props.

If I were to choose, these are the changes I would make:

1. Defensive backs coach.

2. Defensive coordinator but only if we could find one that is extremely well respected and players want to play for.

The Texans players are pretty good about keeping things in house. You can often tell who is good and bad by omission. You know, who players say amazing things about, and then who they don't talk about at all.

On offense, I wonder some about the marriage of Kubiak and Sherman and whether they are on the same page as to what they are trying to do. But that is pure speculation. I'm with Runner, there are so many issues on the offensive side of the ball it is hard to pinpoint what the issue is.

I do not have an issue with WR coach. I've heard him speak about the offense and seen him interacting with players sideline and on the field. I cannot think of anyone better to teach the players what they are supposed to do in the system.

Baled out? Did the WR bail out VY when the wide open long pass in the first quarter was plain ole dropped.

Up until the last couple of games, our WR stats were among the best in the league as far as drops go.

Yes, Bennet dropped a pass in the first series but receivers made alot of adjustments to the VY's passes while our secondary either ran into them or kept their back turned. I really don't think that you are saying that our receiving corps hasn't underachieved are you?

"I do not have an issue with WR coach. I've heard him speak about the offense and seen him interacting with players sideline and on the field. I cannot think of anyone better to teach the players what they are supposed to do in the system."

My concern in this area involves things like--

1) 3rd down and rec runs the route short of the 1st down marker
2) poor technique catching the ball--using the body instead of the hands
3) not coming back to the ball

Most of all, though, I'm puzzled by the lack of a verticle passing attack--not saying it's the WR Coaches fault--but it's well known in the NFL that we don't use the middle of the field. Our #2 avg 4 rec/game and our #3 avg 1.

Who has developed this passing system? Our wide outs have caught 6 tds--1 by #2 and 0 by #3...IMO, this production is 'anemic.' Bottom line, does the WR Coach have any input? Can we win in the future with so little from the WR group? If not, who makes the changes?

" thought VY was baled out alot by receivers that made adjustments and went up and got the ball."

That is not what I'm talking about--did you see the balls Bennet caught as he was going out of bounds? He did not 'go up' for these balls--he went horizontal.

However, he had an advantage in that the Titans use more than 1 wide out, so he wasn't covered by 3 defenders, but the ball was placed where only he could catch it.

The WRs don't throw the ball to themselves. It's also hard to score for a WR if you're doing a 5 yard slant at your own 20. There have been many times they've been open dowfield....I'll leave it at that.

Coaching changes I'd like to see would be: Secondary and possibly Oline coach. If Smith stays with the scheme as of late, I'd stay with him as DC. I'm not sure what he was doing the first few games of the season, but I definetly do not want to see that again.:twocents:

...exactly!...who is making the decisions to play this way? We've played this way since day one...

I don't want to sound like an arse, but the reason I'd said "I'll leave it at that" was due to the direction it would take the thread. :)

well I dont think they are doing the dump off passing for no reason.. and I seriously doubt they are doing it cause they think it is an effective way to run the offense.

Basicly.. im sure they have a motive, I just dont know what it is.

To the people who think we shouldnt change any coaches because we need to have some consistency.. I agree to a certain extent. That is why I wouldnt want to change any major coaches, but changing these position coaches does not constitute a major change. These guys are there to teach technique.. they wont be changing the way they play, or thier team philosophy. Bringing in guys that can teach better technique would be a positive move, and wouldnt shake things up..imo.

IMO, the coaches can only provide a scheme the personnel can handle. In other words, there needs to be some improvement throughout the Offense in order to open up the playbook a little more.:)
