Texans random thought of the day

Worst case for CJ IMO is close to Purdy. If he plays like his rookie season, he sets the market. An awful year or injury and he gets a 1yr deal.
? If Stroud is injured or has an awful year 2025, why extend him one more year? Why not just see how he does in his fourth season before any extension? If he is good in 2026, you can extend him in his 5th year 2027 or before end of year 4. That's what I wanted with Watson before sex offenses hit the news?

As usual, it's about the money. The earlier you extend him the cheaper the contract. I don't think an injury (that he can recover from) moves the line, but if he's absolutely miserable at the position (I can't really see that happening unless the Oline is an absolute disaster) that might do it.

A Mills trade has been discussed before but this one suggests Davis plus a round four for a Pittsburgh round three. I would do that deal.
I'm not criticizing you for posting this article. I just want to say this is not a "potential trade". Just a fig newton of this blogger's imaginenabisco. Porky tried this for awhile and he said they get like $10 an article. Nothing here is real.

Now, carry on with the Davis Mills trade negotiations.

Correct. Its click bait. When i did it for a relatively short stint, i wamted to do what i considered real journalism. They dont want that. They want clicks. Everything else is irrelevant. Advertisers pay by the click. Technically usually by the thousnd. The more clicks = more revenue. Nothing else matters. Whatever you can conjure up that has an edge, some controvery (real or imagined) possible make believe trade scenarios, and headlines meant to gain a click is what they want. This business model is all over youtube too. Texans make a MASSIVE move…so i click like an idiot amd find thst they pick up some FA that is a camp body. But i clicked. Thats all that counts.

Its everywhere…even leaking some into mainstream outlets with all their rank speculation, or trying to stir pots to gain ears or eyeballs. I dont see it changing. The only way it might change is if people refject this form of journalism…fat chance.

Because you don't want to upset him or his agent. IF you still feel he is legit going to be elite

In 2018, the Texans had 10 OTAs. and 2 mandatory minicamps..............

This year, only 6 OTAs and 2 mandatory minicamps................

The NFL just needs to go to 18 or whatever games as they talked about. Up roster size to say 63 (10 more than current), add 2 bye weeks, go back to either more mini camps or a little bit longer TC.

Can we get a 2nd for him? I'd do that. But not a 3rd or less. And if we do trade him, we'd better hope CJ stays healthy. I don't think any of those rookie QBs will amount to much.

Of course if CJ doesn't play, we don't stand much of a chance even if we had Mills.
No I don't think we can get a second for him and would be lucky to get a round three even giving up a draft pick. Interesting that you think Mills is competent but don't think we stand much of a chance with him. If meals cannot win five or six games, why is he on the roster?

And lose the inactive list. Even after it was explained to me, i still think its stupid. Let everyone that is healthy be available. Period. And 63 may be a bit much.increase to 55, let all 55 be available, and that should do it.

Mills isnt going anywhere in 2025. We have no other viable option. I do think they hope that the kid they drafted will use this redshirt year to hone his skills enough to be the #2 next year. I am not counting on it, but that would be ideal. If not, look for a vet FA to fill the role… or who knows…maybe they come to terms with Mills of he will accept his role here.

I agree... the inactive list is stupid

It's not stupid to the owners. Because there is an active game day roster bonus for a large chunk of NFL players. So, those listed inactive lose some income, i.e. it saves the owner money to not pay a player that can’t/wouldn’t play. At even $20,000 per player, it saves an owner over $2.5 million a season. In a 17-game season, a player with a $1.7 million per-game roster bonus for being on the gameday roster would earn $100,000 for each game he is active. The owner savings in this example are immense.

A drop in the bucket for the owners... and they will make even more on a 18 game season. Greed has no bounds

If I were Stroud or his agent I would refuse a one-year extension in those circumstances. And how would that work? The 5th year is usually an average of the top quarterbacks: would you offer the extended year as the 5th year plus say 10%? No, as a player I would not be interested in that kind of a deal. I would trust in myself and play as good as I could in 2026 hoping for that huge deal.

Most teams want a backup QB to be able to lead their teams to a 2-2 or 3-3 record if their starting QB goes down for a period of time. Mills can do this IMHO.

Oh I agree but do not want to be most teams. With this roster, our new College rookie should be able to lead us to the record you indicate.
Agree to disagree.

Have you watched Mertz play and if so what makes you think he's this good? I see Mertz as a avg talent who's injury prone. Smart guy though, I liked him better at Wisconsin than at Florida.

I am saying that an average Quarterback should be able to win 2 to 3 games. If Mertz is not an average Quarterback, he should not have been drafted.

You expect a non elite rookie QB to have a step down performance when transferring to the NFL. An average college QB is likely to have a problem becoming an average NFL QB. I would have a real problem counting on him to be an effective backup any time soon if at all.

They could just tag him. His agent is the very same David Mulugheta. Who happens to be a real $%× a famous client of his is Deshaun Watson. Let's try to keep him happy so we don't have an issue like Watson’s (minus the oil).

I am saying it's time to move on from Davis Mills but I expect him to be on the roster all year

You didn't answer my question? What have you seen that makes you think as a rookie Mertz is up to the job. Did you watch him play in college? I have and there's no way Mertz should see one snap of NFL football next year, unless disaster hits.

I'm for moving on from Mills after this season so they can see what Mertz, Slovis can do before deciding if they need to add a backup next off-season.

I am not debating Mertz, let Slovis be the backup. I just do not like Mills.

I’m sorry what???

Most 1st round QBs don’t become average nfl starters let alone 6th rounders. 6th and 7th rounders are essentially glorified cheaper UDFAs.

This has to be one of the more insane expectation takes I’ve seen.

Mertz is a classic shot in the dark pick that has something like a .001% chance of working out.

Probably my fault that I allowed Mertz to even become part of the conversation. I'm just saying that Mills is not the backup quarterback I want. I was hoping some fool would trade for him and we could get a better backup.

SMH, I'll trust Caserio/Ryans on this. They extended him for a reason last yr. They dont think of Mills like you do.

BTW, watch Mertz/Slovis and tell me that they're better than Mills.
SMH I trust Caserio also but realized he had more important positions to fill than backup quarterback.

Because I can see him not making the 53 Because of Metchie and Hutchinson to name 2. Add in Higgins and Noel and Nico that's 5 already
So they're going to trade the guy they just traded for before he plays a down because of the guys they already had here? Counting on rookies before they play a down?
