NFL Random Thought of the Day

Just after they drafted Mike Green.
Just goes to show you the difference in positional importance.. You can be the best kicker in NFL history, but if you pull some sex predator ****, at the end of the day you're still a freaking kicker and easily replaced.. If you're a QB with perceived "great franchise QB potential", some jackass yokel will give you a fully guaranteed 230 million dollar contract.

That but also his production has been on a slow decline for 2-3 years now. Last year his numbers were very pedestrian at best. He was living on his rep.

Beyond Austin, Pittsburgh also returns Roman Wilson, Scotty Miller and Ben Skowronek and signed Robert Woods as a free agent.

Roman Wilson looked really promising Senior Bowl week but he didn't have any catches last year due to injuries

In other words, not much.you have one very good WR in Metcalf, and a cast of thousands. Teams will roll coverage toward DK. Oickens is a giant PITA but he does have real talent and would help draw coverage as a valid burner and dept threat. Austin is ok but nothing special. The others are JAG’s.

Um, it did state returning receiver...
Don't you think not mentioning the Metcalf trade in the article is either incompetent or misleading? It's the same Steelers WR room, but you've traded Pickens for Metcalf. That's an improvement, no matter how you look at it.

All you need to know is that the article was written by a reporter who covers the Cowboys.

NIH makes $15.3 million grant to help diagnose CTE in living patients
Published May 8, 2025 02:08 PM

As a time when the federal government is looking for more and more ways to make cuts, one agency will devote millions in search of an important breakthrough.

The National Institutes of Health announced on Thursday that it has awarded a $15.3 million grant to fund research for the diagnosis of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in the living.

The project, led by the Boston University CTE Center, will be known as “The DIAGNOSE CTE Research Project-II.” It will examine “new potential biomarkers using blood and brain imaging to help doctors accurately diagnose CTE in living patients,” and also assist in distinguishing CTE from similar conditions, like Alzheimer’s disease.

Former NFL quarterback Matthew Hasselbeck is among the first players to sign up for the project.

“As a former NFL player, I know I am at risk for CTE, but right now I am blessed to be feeling healthy,” Hasselbeck said. “As a former quarterback, I’m choosing to volunteer for DIAGNOSE CTE II to honor my teammates, especially those who blocked for me and took hits to the head, so I didn’t have to. I encourage former college and pro football players age-50 and over to join me in signing up for the study to help researchers learn how to diagnose and treat CTE.”

CTE currently can be diagnosed only through an autopsy. The current study will involve only male football players; the goal is to develop findings that will assist all groups at risk for CTE, including male and female participants in contact sports and military veterans.

Carolina RB Jonathon Brooks has been placed on the physically unable to perform list. He will therefore not play this season.
After recovering from a torn ACL suffered in his last year with Texas, Brooks came back in 2024 to play 3 games before re-tearing the same ACL in December. Tough luck for the youngster. Wishing him better health.

Ex-NFL player Kevin Ware Jr. sentenced to 30 years for murdering his girlfriend
By Charean Williams
Published May 8, 2025 08:50 PM

Former NFL player Kevin Ware Jr. was sentenced to 30 years in prison for murdering his girlfriend in 2021, KPRC reports.
Ware, 41, reached a deal with the prosecution in exchange for a guilty plea.

Taylor Pomaski disappeared under suspicious circumstances following a party in her Houston home on April 25, 2021. The remains of the 29-year-old Pomaski were found eight months later.

She had been cut with a knife, hit with a blunt object and strangled before her corpse was burned.
Ware was indicted for murder and for tampering with Pomaski’s corpse.

He was already in a Texas jail before this indictment on unrelated charges involving possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. His long criminal history dates back to his time as a player at the University of Washington, where he pled guilty to assault, and he has had other charges since his NFL career ended, including another assault, evading arrest and intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance.

Ware played tight end for two years in the NFL, spending a season with Washington in 2003 and with San Francisco in 2004.

The Browns report that there is no true detailed update [except that "he is progressing"] on LB Jeremiah Oswusu-Koramoah, who sustained a neck injury last Nov and has not played since. The Browns have never identified his exact injury, but I have ascertained that it was a cervical vertebral compression fracture, which occurred when he spear tackled Derrick Henry. The Browns are not giving any timeline for his return.

In the case of a stable cervical compression fracture that has completely healed according to radiological confirmation, players are allowed to return within approximately 6 months, providing they are asymptomatic, have regained full strength, range of motion and are psychologically prepared to return to play [criteria that Owusu-Koramoah has not met]. Currently, there is no experimental or clinical data to help physicians predict the stability of healed spinal fractures when they are placed under extreme degrees of mechanical stress like in football. There is increased mechanical stress above and below fused spinal segments, and repetitive microtrauma to a stiff spine exacerbates the stress. At present, there is no conclusive evidence that the injured cervical spine is made stronger than normal by fusion.

With the available information on his supposed "progress," I would not feel that a return to football would be a wise decision for this young man.

The outlook for Browns LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, and how 2nd-round LB Carson Schwesinger factors in: Mary Kay Cabot

BEREA, Ohio — The sight of Pro Bowl linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah walking into the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus in great spirits on April 22, the first day of the Browns offseason program, lifted the entire organization and provided hope for his return to the field.

But the Browns quickly pumped the brakes on expectations, with GM Andrew Berry reiterating during draft weekend that Owusu-Koramoah’s timeline is “nebulous” and making no promises he’ll be able to play this season after suffering the scary neck injury in a violent collision with bruising Ravens running back Derrick Henry on Oct. 27 at Huntington Bank Field.

The sobering truth is, the Browns have no idea if Owusu-Koramoah, their second-round pick in 2021 out of Notre Dame, will play this season, or at all. The neck was so compressed and the injury so severe that Owusu-Koramoah will likely have to weigh the pros and cons of playing again even if he gets the green light from the doctors.

Health is wealth...good for him
Florio says that this injury has come out of nowhere. Yet ever since Carr's 2023 A-C joint shoulder separation, I've been hearing that he has been getting injections in the A-C joint in order to play last season. I can't see how he avoids surgery to improve his problem............whether it's removing the end of the collar bone or having stabilizing surgery.

Uncorrected A-C joint dysfunction can cause the mechanics of the arm to over time create additional risk to shoulder structure damage Retirement couldn't have bee predicted, but surgery could have given him a chance for improvement possible avoidance of the labral and rotator damage. He and his doctors evidently didn't believe it would give him enough improvement to continue playing effectively.

I'm not sure Metcalf is an upgrade over Pickens based strictly on talent levels.

I'm sure if this injury occurred earlier in his career he would've elected for a procedure to get him back on the field, but even without the injury the end was near.. This just helped him reach his decision faster. He was never a top tier guy, but was very solid for awhile.. MUCH BETTER, than his big brother anyways. Good luck Derek, I'm sure I'll see you on TV soon, probably sitting next to his brother.

2025 International Games

Three games will be held in London. The Jacksonville Jaguars will play at Wembley Stadium and the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets will each host a game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. As road games against the Jets and Browns are not on the Jaguars’ schedule, Jacksonville is not expected to play two games in London as it has the past two years.

The Indianapolis Colts will host a game in Berlin, Germany.

The Miami Dolphins will host a game at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, Spain.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will host a game at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland.

The Los Angeles Chargers will host a game at Corinthians Arena in Sao Paolo, Brazil on Friday evening, September 5, with the Kansas City Chiefs reportedly the favorite team to face LA. The Week 1 Brazil game last season streamed exclusively on Peacock.

One additional international game is expected, possibly in Mexico City.

It is possible the Texans could play Colts in Berlin.

It's also possible the Texans play at Wembley (ENG) or at Corinthians (SP), or in CDMX.

I could see any of the 4 markets being equally probable. Either way, HTX will be well represented in ANY international market. People in Europe (esp Ireland/UK) LOVE Texas aka the land of the cowboy & Texas also has a lot of German influence/heritage...

I believe that these games can only be accessed via NFL Network or other pay venues. Of course, the NFL is fan-friendly!

wy kickoffs in Europe, Vikings will play in both Dublin and London
By Michael David Smith
Published May 13, 2025 09:14 AM

The NFL announced today which six games will be played in Europe in 2025 — including two in a row for the Vikings.
All six games will be played on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. ET, which means they will be afternoon games in Europe and early-mornings for American fans. In the U.S., all six games will air on NFL Network.

A new twist this year is that the Vikings will play in Dublin one week and then play in London a week later, which could function for the NFL as an experiment to see how travel within Europe goes. The league is exploring playing more games in Europe, and possibly even locating a team or multiple teams across the pond, and every new scheduling wrinkle is a step toward determining the logistics of that. The Vikings will be the first NFL team ever to play back-to-back-to-back games in three countries, going from the United States to Ireland to England.

The six games in Europe are:

September 28: Vikings at Steelers in Croke Park in Dublin.

October 5: Vikings at Browns at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

October 12: Broncos at Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

October 19: Rams at Jaguars at Wembley Stadium in London.

November 9: Falcons at Colts at Olympic Stadium in Berlin.

November 16: Commanders at Dolphins at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid.

The NFL has also scheduled a Chargers “home” game on Friday, September 5, at Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo. The Chargers’ opponent has not yet been announced.

So far, the Texans are nowhere to be found. Not exactly a team that will hold "leverage" in pursuit of a new stadium.

Roger Goodell, Jimmy Haslam meet with Ohio officials about proposed Browns stadium
By Myles Simmons
Published May 13, 2025 05:24 PM

The Browns want to build a new stadium adjacent to the Cleveland airport in Brook Park and want to use public money to get it done.

On Tuesday, the organization received some support at the Ohio state capital of Columbus from a powerful backer: Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Via Rich Exner of Cleveland.com, Goodell joined Browns owner Jimmy Haslam to meet with Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and other state leaders to help secure public money.

The Browns have two options currently on the table: renovate their current stadium on the Cleveland lakefront or build a new domed stadium in Brook Park. The Browns’ preference is to move to Brook Park, which is roughly 20 minutes away from the site where they’ve played throughout their history in two different facilities.

But government officials from Cleveland — including Mayor Justin Bibb and Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne — would like the state to reject the Browns’ proposal that calls for $600 million in state funds for the proposed $2.4 billion Brook Park stadium, arguing the move to the suburbs would hurt downtown Cleveland. The Browns are also seeking an additional $600 million from Cuyahoga County, paired with a $1.2 billion team contribution.

All of the conversations have been incredibly positive. Tremendous leadership by the governor and leadership by [the General] Assembly,” Goodell told Exner on Tuesday. “We think this is a benefit not just to Brook Park. This is a benefit to the entire area, including downtown. People coming here for events will be staying downtown. They will be eating downtown.”
According to Exner, Haslam, Goodell, and other team officials had separate meetings with DeWine, Ohio Speaker of the House Matt Huffman, and Ohio Senate President Rob McColley about funding the Brook Park stadium.

Goodell noted that the new facility “would clearly be Super Bowl material,” though it would have to be determined if the surrounding hotel capacity and other needs for the event were up to par.

Huntington Bank Field, as it’s now known, opened in 1999 when the Browns returned as an expansion franchise.

“I would tell you that [the existing stadium] doesn’t match the standards or the qualities that current stadiums are matching,” Goodell said. “More importantly, I think our projects are changing from pure stadiums, but to really significant developments and mixed-use, type of developments beyond the stadium that can generate significant economic impact to the local communities.”

The Ohio state budget for this year will be finalized by June 30, which led to the timing of Tuesday’s visit by Goodell and team officials.

“There’s very strong leadership on the state level and a focus, determination to get this done, which I think is extraordinary opportunity for the state, for the community of Brook Park, and I think the NFL and the Browns,” Goodell said.

Fans are going to turn on Hendrickson quick if that threat comes to fruition. athletes are wildly overpaid as it is. If a player is under contract and withholds his labor, that wont go well.

And in this specifc case i dont blame the Bengals. Same logic on getting rid of Tunsil. That defense stunk with him. So why throw money bags at him? They should trade him for what they can get and invest heavy on D in next draft. There D is terrible as is. I have them 3rd in that division, and that only because the offense should be excellent.

God'ell is whoring of the NFL one step at a time.

Fantasy Football has allowed him to not care about the fans.

The Bengals fans have lived with the knowledge that ownership is cheap. To be fair, they don't have the assets that other teams do. Paying Hendrickson after paying their offensive stars was never happening. Hendrickson is doing what's best for him in forcing a trade that should have happened during the draft.

This makes me sick!

Missouri renews efforts to keep Chiefs from moving to Kansas
Published May 14, 2025 10:06 AM

The voters rejected it. The elected officials aren’t taking no for an answer.

Via the Associated Press, Missouri legislators have crafted a new plan to try to keep the Chiefs (and the Royals) from moving across the border to Kansas.

New legislation would allow the state to issue bonds that would cover half the costs of a renovated Arrowhead Stadium and a new baseball stadium.

The effort from the Missouri House of Representatives is coming late in their annual session. A final plan would need to be passed by the House and the Senate before the work ends on Friday.

It won’t be easy. Although governor Mike Kehoe reportedly supports the move, one state Senator calls it “special interests for billionaires.” A long debate concluded on Tuesday night without a vote. A House representative complained that the legislation emerged so late in the session, calling it “fearmongering,” “unfair,” and “conniving.”
Meanwhile, Kansas is ready to welcome both teams.

The issue hit the front burner for Missouri last April, when Jackson County voters overwhelmingly rejected a ballot measure that would have paid for both projects by simply extending an existing sales tax. Even with the Chiefs riding the wave of two straight Super Bowl wins — and the direct involvement of coach Andy Reid, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and tight end Travis Kelce in influencing the vote — more than 58 percent of the electorate told the Chiefs and Royals to get bent.

Now, some elected officials are trying to bend the flow of taxpayer money back toward the two teams. If they can’t, both teams may eventually be proclaiming, “We’re not in Missouri anymore.”

I heard the Texans have as many as 4 prime time games.

How do you feel about that “leverage?”
