C J Stroud up next for $?

Nick Caserio is throwing money around like Larry Hagman in tv series Dallas. I have not seen any moves that I hate and even Danielle Hunter only made me go whoa. Howard's restructure gave me pause but I can at least understand Nick's thinking. So here's my question:
Will Caserio allow a few games to pass to evaluate how Stroud is doing behind a supposedly better offensive line then extend Stroud ? I am still thinking Nick will bring in a quality wide receiver and at least one guard and one tackle in draft. That could consist of a tackle that is also good at guard such as Banks. By game 5, he should know if we are seeing Stroud's 2023 or 2024 season.

I am very impressed by the way Derek Stingley's extension worked out. We all know that the quarterback salaries are going to continue to explode. While per annum costs for QB has increased, the percentage to cap hasn’t. The percentage of GTD $ has jumped.
Spotrac projects 2028 cap to increase by 80 m or 31%.
A Stroud projection from June 2024 (link above) for 3 years from now was $392 million and $291 m GTD with APY of 78.5 m.

Nick isn't afraid of high risk maneuvers. I think he could save quite a bit by extending Stroud during the 2025 season. As with Sting, Stroud's extension would not have large money into cap space until 2027.

Setting aside Dak Prescott stupid deal as you would DeShaun Watson when he signed, $55 million APY for the next four top quarterbacks recently signed. I think Nick could push that same type deal to 23 YOA Stroud.
It's all about how the $ is placed and the guarantee.

Leaving Will Anderson...?

Your thoughts?

NFL players on rookie deals can only be extended after their 3rd season. The soonest Stroud will be able to receive an extension is when the new league year begins in 2026.

Technically, Caserio will be able to see all of the Texans games in 2025 before offering an extension. But make no mistake. CJ is getting an extension. And it's not Nick's call.

I knew that but had forgotten! Thanks for the correction. I guess we can just go ahead and end this thread.

Remind me, how much cap space would you free up with designating Howard a June 1st cut compared to the $11M Caserio freed up while retaining the player?
IIRC, before restructure $14.m release and 16 m trade . The designated term changes nothing except it allows the player to search out another team. It is only allowed for releases. That's why there's only two allowed and one of those was Mason.

I did not understand why he was restructured unless he was going to be our left tackle or LG.

Nick should extend CJ and WAJ as soon as he's able to do so just like he did Sting. The numbers will seem enormous, but by the time the extensions kick in, they'll be manageable.

Teams like Dallas and Cincinnati who wait until the last minute to extend players end up paying a hefty price.

Yeah I believe we should lock up Stroud and Will Anderson as soon as possible. What I like about the contracts Nick has done with Collins and Stingley is he can adjust the money to meet the players needs as well as the team's.

This draft should reveal four starters at prime positions of the future that will help with the cap over the next 3-4 years.

CJ/WA cant be extended until after yr 3.

Indeed. And for 2 reasons. 1- They are going to be big cap numbers. With luck, Nick can work it so it is more bonus than salary or something like that. 2- IF we wait and let other rookies get expended first, like if Young plays well again you know the Panthers will be paying him. But, he isn't (wasn't) close to CJ his 1st year and just started playing decent last season. Meaning if he got say (numbers for an example of what can happen) 100mil over 4yrs, CJ should expect more, 115 over 4 (or 28.5 per year). If we extend CJ before a Young, we cab get him for the 100 over 4. Saving money in the long run. Same with WAJ.

Seeing after Sting was inked, you know that Sauce is Seeing 95+ mil dancing in his head as he tries to push the Jets to pay more for him than CJ got. And they probably will need to

$90 million for Stingley was not what got my attention rather that all but one was guaranteed. That was a statement by the Texans. Then the contract given to Hunter? Wow! You come to Houston and play full out, Texans will pay you. In my opinion, Hunter was brought here to get attention and to help the defense including Anderson get to another level. I did not expect him to be around after this season. Now it seems like Nick is saying help get us to the Super Bowl.

Jalen pitre is eligible. Would you extend ASAP or give him a chance to prove that he is healed and effective?
I'm thinking Pitre and Harris could end up being cap casualties. I'd love to keep both, but you can't pay everyone.

I’d let Pitre test free agency to gauge market value. If the markets fair re-sign him…if not, let him sign elsewhere.

Petrie is a Nickelback who cannot cover.

I'd call him an "in the box" SS/WLB. There is no doubt that Pitre brought a bunch of heat when he blitzed the QB and sniffed out a screen. I certainly think there's a place for him: he allows the defense to shift to a 4-2-5 on run/pass downs. I think next season it will be Harris or Pitre that allows the team to do that.

Agreed. Pitre’s greatest value is always finding his way near the football. He creates chaos and prevents teams from having a clean runway on plays. He’ll miss his fair share of tackles for sure… but he gums up the offense’s execution enough to allow his teammates to make the play for minimal gain.
