Texans Player Transaction DISCUSSION Thread

Danielle Hunter will make $32M this season — a $12.5M raise — and $55.1M ($54.1M fully guaranteed) over the next two seasons.
I wish Spotrac would catch up with all these moves 😁. Hunter went from $19.5 [ including half a mil roster bonus] this season to 32m. 55.1 m new money. 55- 19= ~ $36 m gtd next year. Another move by Nick that I did not expect.
No one can say that the mcnairs are cheap.

I like the fact that the signing bonuses are up front and there's a lot of guaranteed money.

If you want to play for the Texans, just ensure you have an extensive injury history. You'll be welcome here in Houston, Land of the Ambulances.

The funny part is that seems to be a tradition since 2002.

However - is it really possible to only acquire players with no injury history?

It’s been awhile since i’ve seen a player on this team take a pay cut to keep their roster spot. Guess that just shows how deep the DL is…

Rankins and Autry at same pay. In a positive scenario both account for around 600 snaps with a starter-level work load. 50-60% of snaps.

Rankins at DT and Autry at both DE/DT.

Both coming off disappointing seasons (injury, suspension related) that caused them to have to take lower contracts this season.

Always looks like a shell game to me. "Looks" like a paycut, but at the end of the day he's getting the same money.

What i don't get are the void years. Does that mean he will absolutely not be on the team when those void years come up? No chance of "renegotiating" them?

They don't usually take pay cuts. It's usually salary converted to signing bonuses that can be spread out over the lifetime of the contract. He got more guaranteed money.

Texans signed LB E.J. Speed, formerly of the Colts, to a one-year, $5 million contract.
The deal comes with a $1.75 million signing bonus, $1.5 million guaranteed, $1.5 million in playtime incentives, and a $500,000 Pro Bowl escalator. Speed set a career high in tackles in 2024 with 142, including seven tackles for loss and five pass break ups. He’ll bolster an aggressive Texans linebacking corps after spending the first six years of his NFL career with the Colts.

Speed has missed 31 tackles the past 2 years. That could be a problem.

I was about to post the same.......................he is one of the League leaders in missed tackles.................... He has actually had 45 missed tackles over the last two years [Most missed tackles in the NFL since 2023], including being second in the NFL with 26 this past season.

Also worrisome last season was his 103.6 passer rating allowed [allowed 49 catches on 62 targets for 454 yards and one score].

I think he’s a very similar player to Zach Cunningham although i’d say Speed is better in coverage than Cunningham was… by no means elite in coverage but Cunningham was consistently bad at that throughout his career.

The missed tackles I think are partially because he’s got such good length and he is instinctive so gets to the ball quickly. He gets in tackling position when some players wouldn’t even be able to be in a position to make the play (like Cunningham).

Can he improve? Absolutely. And I think this is as good a spot as any to do so with two of the best LB coaches in the league in Bill Davis and DeMeco Ryans. To’o To’o made significant improvement in this area last season for example.

Speed was much better in coverage in 2023. I hope the 2024 numbers were more a product of the entire Colts defense taking a step back and he’ll improve with a much better supporting cast in Houston.

I hope you are right.

Speed has played in 31 of a possible 34 games over the past 2 seasons.

Is 1 missed tackle per game really that bad for someone who gets as many opportunities as he does?

His missed tackle percentage last year was 10.7%, 130th highest. The year before, 12.1%, 95th highest. Compare that to Pitre who had a 17.1% missed tackle rate last year, which was 15th highest
