Texans trade for WR Christian Kirk

Until Nick does something about it Kirk still cost $13M. Which is more than Diggs should have got last season.

Not my money, but it's got to work with our Roster, under the cap & I'm sure Nick is aiming at a Super Bowl.

Call getting to the conference championship just incremental improvement if you want but in my book that would make the 2025 season
a solid success.

Was chatting to a Ravens fan the other day who made a really good point about what is success in the NFL? Because they played great all season long, very few games they’d have liked back, before coming up short in a win or go home playoff game.

His point was looking at free agency where would they improve that team? Of course players get older and injuries change situations, there will always be roster churn, but really they could be as good as last season and win the Super Bowl.

The Diggs signing, they got unlucky because the OC they entrusted ran out of ideas and he got a bad injury. Couple that with the fact that despite coming off an ACL he’s still likely the top WR target in FA and the Texans are right to be taking on a player that most opinions I’ve read see as a better version of the same type of player right now, rather than overpaying to chase the loss.

Of course the aim is superbowl every season, but the league is setup a bit wonky in that regard with 31 unsuccessful teams every season and it being so hard to repeat the feat.

Kirk fills a big need and is one of (if not) the best options for WR out there. I know he's been injured that past couple seasons, but at least on paper he's a dream fit. He's a great shifty slot with tremendous vertical ability. Feels tailor made for CJ and even for Nico. I can just see a safety jumping to cover Kirk vertically with Nico darting in on a dig route underneath him - tough for a defense to cover.

Kirk also always struck me as the most talented player on offense that the Jags had whenever I watched them or we played against them.

The "injury prone" description (in general) seems a little farcical when you look at what the injuries actually were. He had a 'core muscle' injury in 2023 (that held up in 2024,) and he broke his collarbone in 2024. To me, that simply looks like bad luck. Heck Nico has a worse injury history than Kirk does.

Now I don't expect him to put up another 1000 yard season like 2022, but I think he'll fit in very well with the 'quick game' that I expect Caley to install.

The '23 injury was an "inguinal groin tear" on his right side, causing him to miss the last five games of the season. Previously, in September 2020, he "strained" the same groin, missing only one game.

He was healthy last season.

Whelp, according to Number19 the first core issue held out for 3 years (with a thousand yard season in the middle) before reoccurring. I'm feeling pretty good about him making it through his 1 nonguaranteed season. :tiphat:

I still think Houston should go after a Elite receiver whether thats bringing back Diggs for a one year deal or sign Kupp that is getting released tomorrow. Collins and Kirk I dont think is it
 
I think they will most likely draft a wide receiver in the first 2-3 rounds who fits their needs. I can't rule out another vet signing, but IMHO, the Kirk trade was the splash guy in terms of a vet. There's not much to work with in terms of the cap and considering the o-line needs...I think Kirk and the other low-level guys are it for vets. I could be wrong, though. Let's give it a week or two, and then we'll have a good idea where the WR position stands.

I think Diggs has been replaced with Kirk, but I would hope to see another #2 brought in. There's a chance that Hutchinson might emerge in his 3rd year (like Nico), but I wouldn't want to rely on that.

His clavicle fracture was no doubt "bad luck." But adductor tears and core tears are overuse injuries. He had been dealing with his adductor for a while before it tore off the bone. He also was dealing with his abdominal core tear for a couple of months before it extended, making him significantly compromised. Both injuries required surgeries.

What bothers me about the latter injuries is that the adductor off the bone injury occurred on the left..........and the core abdominal tear occurred on the right. This tells me that Kirk likely has structural soft tissue weaknesses, making future similar type of issues distinctly more possible.

Excited to see Kirk in this offense. Diggs was a life line for CJ last season and I expect Kirk to do the same (with the added deep shot element). When Diggs got injured CJ lost his safety net. Hopefully the Texans have remedied that problem with their overhaul at the skill positions this offseason.

In my estimation, this was the one play that got me most excited about Kirk. Sure, it's great to hit singles and doubles, but when a "Slot" receiver can be a home run hitter, it's a serious problem for defenses. On this play, the Jaguars put Kirk in a tight slot to the left and took off like a shot up the field. As he did, he essentially forced man coverage with the Texans free safety. Because he ran such great over routes, Calen Bullock camped a little tighter to the coverage, anticipating Kirk to turn and burn to the sideline. But, Kirk deked his move to the sideline, turned Bullock the wrong way and all in one motion sprinted directly up the field. I remembered this play distinctly as I had a GREAT view and I saw Kirk the whole way from my spot on the sideline. I didn't have very nice words because I thought it was a game-changing TD. Thankfully (at the time), Lawrence overthrew him. That was an easy six points as the overthrow was brutal. However, Kirk's speed is seen all over that route and the ability to go deep from the slot is HUGE. The Texans essentially had no deep shots the second half of the season, but Kirk can help bring some of those back from his interior receiving position.

They have those deep shots available now with Kirk or Noel in the slot and Collins/Higgins out side.

What really excites me is having Collins with Higgins in the slot in the RZ. That's uncoverable with Mixon in the backfield if they get even avg blocking from the TE position.
