Black Monday: 2025 Head Coach Firings

Up first is Jerod Mayo (well technically not Monday)

I wonder if pulling a Lovie and not securing the #1 pick in the draft played a part in his firing.
Rumors are that Kraft already has Vrabel lined up for the job.

I love that Patriot fan has to deal with a little football reality

Once the savior of Duval County, Doug Pederson is now the latest head coach to go by the wayside in northeast Florida.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired Pederson, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Monday, following a 4-13 season that fell seismically short of owner Shad Khan's expectations.
Khan announced the news later Monday, adding that general manager Trent Baalke will be retained.

Wow. I really thought he was going to be the one make them respectable.

How does Baalke keep his job? He survived Urban Meyer and Pederson. I don't think any decent HC candidate will want to work with him.

Most head coaches were probably already let go before seasons end, so it may not be much action this offseason. Currently the Bears, Saints, Jets, Patriots and Jags are in the market for a HC. Mike McCathy's contract with the Cowboys expires on 14 January, so we'll see how that drama unfolds.

It's possible Lions OC Ben Johnson takes none of these jobs. In fact, we could be looking at an all retread hiring cycle. Vrabel, Carroll, and Gruden for starters. Kliff Kingsbury has been redeemed in Washington. Brian Flores should get a job, as well.

Bears - Carroll
Saints - Gruden
Jets - Kingsbury
Pats - Vrabel
Jags - Flores

It's possible but IF the Lions win the SB, I'd bet at least 1 if not both of their coordinators will hired as a HC.

People have tried to run McCarthy off for years lol

Aaron Gleen should be a candidate for the Saints job. Ben Johnson will be wanted everywhere. But Johnson has been picky, and I'm not sure he wants any of these jobs.

No need to hate on the Pats just because they were successful for 2 decades. Kraft got lucky with Belichick and Brady. Unfortunately Vrabel and Maye look pretty solid too.

Take comfort in knowing that the Jags will suck as long as a politician like Baalke is running the franchise. He's their version of RS.

Meanwhile Harbaugh and the Chargers are playing the Texans at NRG this Saturday.

I would never hire Flores if I was an owner after the crap he pulled in Miami. I wouldn't hire Kingsbury either as a HC. As an OC sure I would.

Joe Brady would be my choice for the Saints job.

Glenn to the Jets. Makes a lot of sense. I love Aaron. I worry he won’t be successful due to poor ownership.

As far as the Jags, I saw that David Culley just entered the chat room. If the Jags have to punt, they’re good.

And agreed with steel on Flores. I wouldn’t touch him with a 25 ft pole. DC yes. HC, not only no but hell no.

Here is something I think most potential coaches consider-

Who has a QB I can build around or a draft pick that I can use? What type of ownership circus am I walking into?

Patriots and Bears look like best prospects. Jets and Jags look the worst. Saints are bad just because I couldn’t see winning anything with Carr and Kamara. Have the Saints fixed their salary cap yet?

Top candidates like Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn should be comfortable not reaching for an opening.

Slowik should be desperate and take anything that comes his way.

What makes you say Vrabel is a solid coach? He didn’t accomplish much in Tennessee.
They did reach an AFCCG. I give him a break because of who he works for, it wasn't his idea to trade AJ Brown. Ran Cauthorn stabbed Vrabel in the back to gain power. After this yr there's a good chance Cauthorn could be on his way out.

When has any Texans HC accomplished this?

Not hating on the patriots, just the fans!
Yeah, most of them were nice when we went to Foxboro to see a game during Derrick's rookie yr. Some little drunk guy sitting below me started elbowing me in the stomach at the end of the close game. I told my brother who was with me that if he elbowed me again I was going to kick his butt. It wouldn't have taken much since the guy could barely standup. I'm not a fighter, so my brother switched seats with me and spilled a beer all over him. LOL

Yeah, who would want a coach that turned a bunch of absolute nobodies into one of the premier defenses in the league. Yuck.
Ask Miami what they think about Flores and what it's like to work with him.

Also as a HC what has Flores ever won? Not worth the headache IMHO.

What did he do in Miami?
Not much record wise.

Filed a lawsuit that said Ross, Greir offered to give him money to tank at the end of Flores last season in Miami. It was the smart thing to do, Flores won his lawsuit IRRC. He also filed suit against a number of teams including the Texans claiming racism was the reason he wasn't hired. Which was hilarious because Culley had just been fired and Lovie was hired. Remember all of the SAS BS?

Didn't Vrabel stabbed former GM, Jon Robinson in the back to gain personnel power and was not onboard with hiring a GM to replace Robinson? I'm not sure how Vrabel not being a team player or thinking he doesn't need a GM turns into getting stabbed in the back. Especially when you consider what he did to Robinson (who you liked as GM from the Belichick tree).

Robinson got fired for trading AJ Brown and then drafting Treylon Burks to replace him, then a bad season followed and Cauthorn was hired.

So, Carthon didn't backstab him. A bad roster, going 6-18 in his final 24 games and still wanting control of personnel is why he was fired. Here is Vrabel's reaction to the Brown trade and after that, he was done with Robinson.

The reason Robinson was let go was because he decided to trade AJ Brown over Vrabel's objections. (Followed by a bad season) If you want to winning a power play.

Vrabel got fired because he went to the Pats reunion and lost to the Texans while the inbreds were wearing Oiler unis. But yes, Carthon wanted Vrabel out and got his way. I'm glad this happened because the Inbreds are going to suck for awhile.

I fully agree with them sucking for a long time. I just don't get why you consider Vrabel got backstabbed when he wanted out of Tennessee, wasn't a team player with the new GM and did what you mentioned above. If anything, when he didn't get control of personnel, he plotted his way out.

The Bears have been trash forever. Don’t see it changing much

Probably when he knew that Carthon wasn't good at his job is when he knew the end was near. In my experience, people who aren't good at their jobs play political games to keep their jobs and if they have to get a few people fired to cover for their own inadequacies then so be it.

Jim Caldwell made it to the AFCCG. He says hello.

My opinion of Vrabel is he rode the success of Derrick Henry similar to Mike McCarthy rode Aaron Rodgers. I don’t see a genius trait that you would see out of a Shannhan, Reid, LaFluer, etc. More of a manager that needs retread OC and DC.

Nope.

I give bull pucky what the Dolphins owner thinks about Brian Flores. Your objection to Flores is lawsuit related, not football related. No coordinator did more with less than Flores this season. He would be a great choice for the Jags, taking over that underachieving defense. And he could give Lawrence the tough coaching he needs. As a Texans fan, I hope the Jags don't get a HC as good as Flores.

Vrabrel did a great job firing his team up. He's a good LB coach but sucked here as a DC. His thought was to blitz every play and disguise nothing. He'll fit in well in NE with rhe right hires around him. But Maye is no Brady

Nope.

I hope Flores stays out of the AFC... unless it's Cleveland :D
Even he couldn't fix Cleveland

Was he a good HC in Miami?

I see a guy who had Tannehill as his QB and made it.

His defenses are tough and he put together a really good coaching staff.

Pats will be good in a couple of yrs if they hire him.

If getting to the AFCCG is the benchmark, Doug Marrone made an AFCCG with Blake Bortles and Marrone has not gotten another HC job.

Exactly. I see a guy who had Derrick Henry rush for 2074 yards and 17 TDs with a QB who feasted off of play action for a career year. Vrabel is the only coach I ever heard fans and media claim he would be a better HC than DC.

You got it right. He is a guy who will set the culture of his team, hire a good staff and is a great manager. However, the smartest guy in the room complex and his micromanagement style wears thin. His style will play well with the Patriots.

You've got a have players to do well, yes Henry is a stud and Vrabel smartly rode him. Imagine Reid without Mahomes.

I'm trying to figure out in your words how a guy who you said in one breath is a great manager and in another breath say he's a micromanager, who has a smartest man in the room complex?

Aaron Glenn did more with less.. he's down to 2nd and 3rd stringers/FAs. It's amazing he's been able to keep that mash unit rolling.

That's fair. He's a great manager/leader of players, setting the tone, culture and identity. However, when it comes to his coaching staff, he can be a micro manager who is not open to feedback. In other words, think of him as a better coach than O'Brien with a better personality but with some of the same management style.

If you don't believe me. Take it from one of his players (Wesley Woodard). Dean Pees was a Super Bowl winning DC with the Ravens and one of the better defensive minds and Vrabel hired him as his first DC.

“I’ll tell you what, remember this date: January 11th, 2020 (the date of Tennessee’s Divisional Round game versus Baltimore). That was the last time the Titans had any kind of defensive identity…” Woodyard said. “After that game, coach Pees didn’t really call any of the plays in the AFC Championship Game. That’s why the identity on that defensive side of the ball has been lax. Everybody that fights and everybody that gives any kind of pushback to Mike (Vrabel) is not received with any open arms. It’s always fault, it’s always disciplinary, it’s always equal access to being cut or released.”
