NFL Random Thought of the Day

Deshaun Watson: “No doubt” I’m still an elite QB, low expectations for Browns “fine with us”

By Josh Alper

Published September 4, 2024 03:27 PM

Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson’s long wait to get back into game action is set to end against the Cowboys on Sunday.

Watson spent the offseason recovering from the right shoulder injury that ended his 2023 season and listening to questions about whether he’ll ever get back to the kind of play that made the Browns guarantee him $230 million after trading for him in 2022. During a press conference on Wednesday, Watson said he has “no doubt” that he is still capable of that kind of production and said it’s no problem for him if others are overlooking what the Browns have going on this season.

“Fine with us,” Watson said. “Perfect. We’re just going to go under the radar and work. That’s all we can do.”

Watson didn’t play in the preseason and was limited in one training camp practice with arm soreness, but feels he doesn’t have any limitations in terms of throwing the ball ahead of what everyone with the Browns hopes will be a return to his past heights.

NFL makes minor tweaks to dynamic kickoff rules
By Charean Williams

No one knows what to expect from the new dynamic kickoff rule.

The NFL didn’t alter the touchback starting position, so a ball kicked into or out of the end zone will result in the offense taking over at its own 30-yard line. The Competition Committee originally proposed the 35.

On the eve of the season opener, the NFL did tweak minor aspects of the rule.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports the league sent a memo to clubs Wednesday with some clarifications of the rules, but no substantive changes are expected before or during the 2024 season.

Among the tweaks, the ball must be kicked off a tee except on a declared onside kick, and teams can elect to tack on penalty yardage for certain fouls to the end of the play rather than re-kicking. The league also clarified an alignment issue.

The first test of the dynamic kickoff comes Thursday night when the Chiefs host the Ravens.

Ronnie Stanley: They weren’t calling illegal formation both ways, they made an example of me

A call by replay officials on the final play of the game took a Ravens touchdown off the board, but calls by officials on the field earlier in the game drew a lot of attention from Baltimore as well.

Left tackle Ronnie Stanley was called for three illegal formation penalties and right tackle Patrick Mekari was called for it once, which wasn’t a huge shock given that officials told teams that the call would be a point of emphasis this season. The Chiefs were not flagged for the infraction at any point in their 27-20 win, however, and Stanley took issue with what he felt was a singular focus on how he was lining up.

Stanley said he plans to ask the league to review the calls because he knows “my helmet was breaking the center’s butt” and that he was “lining up more in front of what I used to do” because of the emphasis on the call.

“The way it was going through the game, I really feel like they were trying to make an example and chose me to be the one to do that,” Stanley said, via the team’s website. “As far as I saw, they weren’t doing it on both sides of the ball. I know that I was lined up in good position a majority of those calls they made.”

Two of the calls came on the Ravens’ opening drive. That possession ended with a touchdown, but Stanley said the calls “hindered” the offense and it will be interesting to see if other teams get hamstrung by a flurry of flags as the opening weekend plays out.

Yeah, that was bullshit!

With the new three-year, $72.3 million deal, Ramsey is guaranteed to earn $55.3 million starting this season, which ensures he will have the highest career earnings for a cornerback in league history.

Yeah, that was bullshit!

How? He was clearly not lined up correctly. In fact, they could have called him on it a dozen times. The rule is simple. Follow the rule and quit bitching when you get caught. And the Chiefs were lined up correctly when I paid attention at least. BTW, Tunsil does the same damn thing. Dude cheats by lining up incorrectly and leaving a tick early.

He was lined up with his head even or in front of the center's butt. What does he have to do?

This illegal formation crap is too much…
Give it a break already!
It’s garbage

Stanley was flagged three times for illegal formation. He was penalized on the second play of the game without any warning from the officials.
After the game, Ravens coach John Harbaugh said teams were informed that illegal formation was going to be a point of emphasis this season. But Baltimore made the point that Kansas City was not penalized once for illegal formation, while the Ravens were flagged five times.

He was lined up just fine, but since he was in pass pro, standing up, it looked like he was in the backfield. Garbage rule/call.
How about the early starts on the KC RT, two or three times, NOT called!

He was also called for it at least twice when he was in a 3 pt stance and lined up just fine

Hmm, I don't recall him getting flagged with his hand in the dirt. Standing up though he looked like he was in the backfield every time. Surprised he didn't get flagged more.

I didn’t watch the game.

Was it as bad as hearing how New Orleans recovered from Hurricane Katrina 5 years after the fact?

Not yet. Give it til about week 6.

And if I never heard the phrase "3-peat" it won't be soon enough.

Deshaun Watson's estranged father passed away yesterday. No other details. He and his father were in no way close...............Watson had only met his father on 5 occasions.

This is essentially what I posted when Jackson's weight loss was announced. I fear a short season for him. I see the same for Deshaun Watson.

Lamar Jackson’s aggressive running and lighter frame could spell trouble for Ravens
By Mike Florio

Reigning NFL MVP Lamar Jackson had a huge night in the regular-season opener, even though the Ravens fell short. The problem for Jackson and the Ravens is that, if he keeps playing the way he did, he’ll fall short of a full 17-game season.

Jackson, who looked noticeably thinner during pregame warmups, took too many hits. He delivered too many hits, too.

For a quarterback, one hit delivered is too many. The goal is to avoid contact. Because any hit can be the one hit that knocks a quarterback out, for the game or a week or a month or the season.

Yes, he rushed for 122 yards on 16 carries. It won’t be wise to keep that up for 16 more regular-season games. It definitely won’t be wise to lower a helmet and crash into a defender, as Jackson did at one point.

Six years ago, Jimmy Garoppolo did the same thing, in the same stadium. And he tore an ACL. In 2016, Robert Griffin III did the same thing, during a Week 1 game for the Browns against the Eagles. And he messed up his shoulder.

The courage is admirable. The risk is unreasonable. The Ravens have little chance to do much this year without one of the NFL’s best players. He doesn’t need to treat each game like the Super Bowl, and he doesn’t need to treat each play like it’s the last play of the fourth quarter.

Slide, get down, get out of bounds. An extra yard isn’t worth the risk of missed time.

This is why I was hoping Ravens would put an L in Chiefs record that could benefit Houston. Ravens lose Jackson early to mid season benefitting Houston.

Chiefs have a fairly soft division and are arguably better than they were last season. Unless Mahomes gets hurt they were going to be several wins ahead of the Texans regardless of that game.

Read suffered a left quad tendon rupture in 2020. He then tore his right quad tendon the beginning of Dec last season. Both old and more recent studies still cite only 50% of athletes return to play.........with even less chance for those with a high BMI. He met the odds once. Can he do it again? That would be a monumental accomplishment. Average expected return to play is ~8.5 months.

D.J. Reader is not expected to play for Lions
By Josh Alper
Published September 8, 2024 08:36 AM

It looks like defensive tackle D.J. Reader’s Lions debut will be on hold for at least another week.

Reader tore his quad while playing for the Bengals last year and he signed with the Lions as a free agent this offseason.

Reader has been practicing with the team for the last few weeks, but he was listed as questionable on Friday and Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports he will not play against the Rams on Sunday night.
